I’ve said before in a previous article, I actually have a journal where I write the “God winks” or “God sightings” that happened throughout my day. These help me remember where I saw God and to give thanks to God for it. Those of you who have experienced it know that there is truly nothing greater than seeing God at work, even on a crummy day. It really is unexplainable to witness God in these miraculous ways. Now this has got me thinking, if we are called to give thanks to God, much like the one leper in the scripture on Sunday did, wouldn’t we also be called to give thanks to one another? I believe the answer is yes . Saying “thank you” is something we all learn as children. But I think we often miss the “why” of saying thank you to someone. So, why do we say thank you? Well, we say thank you because we want the other person/people to know we value what they’ve done for us. That’s right, we say thank you because we truly value the other person, and that can go a really long way, just like valuing our faith does! Yet, there is a bit of a conundrum we face when it comes to giving thanks. The conundrum is that some of us feel like accepting help from others can feel like we are failing. But the idea of saying and giving thanks isn’t about our self or failure at all; it’s about the other and letting him/her know that you value them. But I think saying and giving thanks has lost its sense of value. What I mean, is that expressing our thanks is an everyday occurrence, which is good, but because of that, we tend to think nothing of it. Think of the last time someone said “Thank you” to you. How did you respond? I often find myself responding “No problem,” “It was nothing,” “I don’t need a thank you,” or blowing off the thank you as if it wasn’t a big deal. But it is a big deal! And all of my responses make it seem like I don’t appreciate or value the person saying thank you to me, when I do. It reminds me of a couple of months ago when I was with my girlfriend and her kids. The littlest one, who is four, did something for her mom, and when mom said, “Thank you,” she said, “I love you” in reply. We both kind of laughed at her response, but the more I’ve thought about that response, the more I really like it. Give Thanks

When you woke up this morning, did you give thanks to God? Or when you were outside or traveling and noticed the beautiful fall colors, did you give thanks to God? My point in asking these two questions is in

wondering, how often do we give thanks to God for the things that take place around us?I’ve said before in a previous article, I actually have a journal where I write the

“God winks” or “God sightings” that happened throughout my day. These help me remember where I saw God and to give thanks to God for it. Those of you who have experienced it know that there is truly nothing greater than seeing God at work, even on a crummy day. Meet the CandidatesOur Church Council Annual Meeting and Election is coming up soon … on Sunday, October 20. This year, we have more candidates than open positions, so your votes will make a real difference. YOU will decide who is elected to the Saint Stephens Church Council. So … here is a chance to get to know the people who will be on the ballot. We hope you will come to church next Sunday and be an active part of our Annual Meeting and Election. It’s pretty important stuff!

Christopher Stamm is seeking re-election to a second two-year term on Church Council. He was originally appointed to fill an opening on the Council in the middle of a term and has since been elected to continue. He and his wife Mary joined Saint Stephens in May 2016 and have been actively involved ever since.

Judy Heath is seeking re-election to a second two-year term on Church Council. She has been a member of Saint Stephen's since 1987. She is married to Greg and they have two sons. “In the two years I have been on council, much of that has been focused on the NOW! Campaign,” Judy says. “I feel it is a very important for St. Stephen's to continue to support the NOW! campaign in order to preserve the strength and beauty of the church.”

Kristine Smith is seeking re-election to a second two-year term on Church Council. She has been a member of Saint Stephens her entire life. “Being on church council the last two years has taught me how the church operates,” Kris says. “I am amazed at the large number of volunteers we have that keep our church running smoothly. I realize the importance of being frugal with the funds being donated by our members along with continuing to help others in need.”

Janet Schaefer is seeking re-election to a second two-year term on Church Council. Janet began attending Saint Stephens while she and her now husband, Bruce, were dating and then joined the church after they married. Janet says that initially her involvement with Council began when,

“I was asked to be on the Church Council by an outgoing member. I wasn’t sure, but said yes. It is very interesting. You get a behind the scenes of what it takes to make and keep our church running.” And Janet is hoping to help with that process for another two years.

Chris Stevenson is seeking election to a two-year term on Church Council for the first time. He was raised in Saint Stephens church from childhood on, leaving only when he was in the service. “I am now back with the church as I am working toward my ministry training through the Lay Academy,” Chris says. “I like to spend time with family and the grand kids and cheering on the Packers and Brewers and also the Badgers football. Along with that I do like to serve in

the church, fully participating in all that church has to offer. I have watched through the years as this church has gone through tough times and through good times and always loved how we come together when times are tough.”

Bonnie Koelsch is seeking election to a two-year term on Church Council. She is a past member of Church Council, having served two consecutive two-year terms several years ago, but now “would like to get more involved in the life of the church,” Bonnie says. Bonnie is a lifelong resident of Merrill and a lifelong member of Saint Stephens.

Paula McIntyre is seeking election to a two-year term on Church Council for the first time. She has been a member of Saint Stephens for about 13 years and was a member of a UCC church in southern Wisconsin when growing up. “I have made lasting and important friendships at Saint Stephens, because I have been involved in our congregational life,” Paula says. “I appreciate the opportunity to be a Council candidate. I am married to Bill and have 2 children—Wes, who is a freshman at UWEC, and Lydia, who is a sophomore at MHS.”

Cheryl Buck is seeking election to a two-year term on Church Council. She is a past member of Church Council, having last served in 2012. Cheryl has been an active member of Saint Stephens for many years and actively volunteers with the Scrip program and helps with the annual O’Tannenbaum event held each December at Saint Stephens. Her husband, David, is also actively involved as an usher at Saint Stephens.

LISTENING TO OUR WORSHIP ON THE RADIO?Tune your dial to 96.3 FM WJMT at 9:00 AM each Sunday for the best reception. It’s the same broadcast as on the AM station, but much better sound quality!

Corey Dornbrack is seeking election to a two-year term on Church Council. He has served on Council the majority of 2019 but was appointed to fill a vacancy and now needs your official vote to continue acting as a member of the Church Council. Corey is a lifelong member of Saint Stephens and is actively involved serving at church, along with his wife, Cathy, and his two children, Carl and Rose. Corey is a veteran and enjoys off roading with his Jeep.

Jerry Burnett is seeking election to a two-year term on Church Council for the first time. He has been married to Shelly Burnett for 31 years. Together, they have 4 children—3 daughters and 1 son—and 7 grandsons. He grew up in Marshfield but moved to Merrill in 1989 and joined Saint Stephens, and is a veteran of the US Army.

SPECIAL GIFTS

UNDER THE BRIDGEThere are 10-15 men and women living under the bridges in Wausau. Do you have sleeping bags you no longer use? Foam pads/cushions? Wool blankets? Warm jackets hanging unused in your closet?

We are asking for donations of these gently used

items, as well as warm clothing. Socks, sweaters and sweatshirts, flannel shirts, long underwear, jackets, rain gear for both men and women would also be appreciated.

Imagine how miserable it would be to live outside in the weather conditions we’ve been having, and as the evening temperatures drop and we head into winter, it’s only going to get worse for the homeless in our area.

The homeless community would appreciate your donations. Please donate items that are only gently used and still have some life left in them. And please, nothing that smells mildewy or has been stored too long where it is damp.

Donations may be brought to the church office so that Dave Raddenbach can distribute them to the homeless community on Wednesdays along with sandwiches.

You’d be NUTS not to use Scrip! It’s Free Money for the Church!

Give it a Try ... Stop by the Scrip Table after church ... or stop in the Church Office ... and we’ll explain how it works!

SECURITY STUFFAs a congregation, we are better prepared to handle a crisis situation when everyone is on the same page, so to speak. Did you know there hasn’t a single death from fire in school since 1958 ... and that’s in large part due to the fact that fire drills are now a regular part of school

“routines.” People, including children, don’t go into all out panic mode when a fire alarm goes off these days. They know just where to go and what to do ... and that’s saved lives.

We’ll be exploring ways that we can put systems and safety procedures in place to ensure adults, children, and visitors are safe and welcome here at Saint Stephens, too. Your cooperation can help make Saint Stephens a safe place to be ... a safe place where All are Still Welcome here!

Here’s “A Great Green Idea”Always recycle Glass.

Un-recycled glass can take up to a million years to

decompose.

THANK YOUThe Green Team wants to thank everyone who has sent articles or other feedback to the team since our Mission Moment. The team will be reviewing this information at our October meeting.

Thanks again and keep it coming!”

OFFICE CHANGES & MAIL SLOTS MOVEDWe’ve been playing musical offices, but everyone is settled now. Office doors are clearly labeled so you can find us! The main office door will remain closed and locked on Sundays, so Mail Slots have been moved into the copy room across the hall in case you need to drop things off for any of the office staff.

LAUSITZ BRASS CONCERTThe German church (Evangelical Church of Berlin, Brandenburg and Silesian Upper Lusatia, whom the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC has had a partnership with since 1981) has fronted the money for tickets for the Lausitz Brass group from Germany to come to America.

They are touring our Conference and will be performing in Concert here at Saint Stephens. Free will donations (cash only) will be accepted. The goal is for the group’s performances to recoup the money for transportation so they can pay it back to the German church. The total cost to transport the group to the U.S. was $6,000.

Lausitz Brass is comprised of nine performers from Germany: Steffen Peschel (leader), Katja Meyer, Sebastian von Eitzen, Anna-Sophia Koehn, Christoph Hartmann, Johannes Soldan, Albert Sturz, Leonie Steuer, and Julia Haase. They are hoping to experience real life in the U.S. and some of our varied culture here, in addition to sharing their music with us.

We are planning to take them out to the Sawmill Brewing Company after the concert. Plan to join us!

FEED YOUR SPIRIT . . .Trinity

Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the parent loves the child. … This is the one who came by water and blood, Jesus Christ, not with the water only but with the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one that testifies, for the Spirit is the truth. - 1 John 5:1, 6-7 (NRSV)

I’ve heard it said that Christians can be divided into different camps when it comes to the Trinity—often formulated as Father, Son, Holy Spirit.

Some, they’ll claim, lean more to the Father, with all of his patriarchal authority. This is the God who hovers over us as protector. Father-leaning Christians, as you might imagine, love to pray: “Father God...” calling on this listening ear, repeating the words of Jesus himself. The word I prefer for this person of the Trinity is Source.

Others, they say, lean more on Jesus. Word Made Flesh, light from light, true God from true God … who for us and for our salvation walked the earth and served the people. Jesus Christians appreciate the tangibility of Christ. He is the most relatable because we know humans.

And finally, they say, there are the Holy Spirit Christians—the ones who appreciate the immanence, the constant presence, the surprise, the infusing power,

the unpredictability of Spirit.

The thing about the Trinity, though, is that it incorporates aspects of the divine life that are not easily explained. There’s no need to be in any particular camp, because they all work in concert. I don’t know about you, but there are times I need to call on a source … while evoking a concrete image … whilst drawing on a strength of spirit.

In other words: I’m not prepared to choose.

This is the beauty of the Holy Trinity. It provides in ways that push past definition.

May we receive beyond definition, too.

Prayer

God of many names: bless us in order to bless others in the shape they can receive. Amen.
