President Vernon E. Inge Jr. passed the gavel to Douglas D. Callaway at the Bar’s Law Day Luncheon on May 1st. The Honorable Stephen R. McCullough, Supreme Court of Virginia, delivered the keynote address and administered the oath to new officers. In ad-dition, the John Marshall Foundation presented its annual awards to Virginia government and civics teachers.

2017-2018 luncheon dates announced
Douglas D. Callaway became the Richmond Bar Association’s 133rd President when he took office on June 1, 2017. In addition to serving two terms on the Association’s Board of Directors, Doug has served on the Executive Committee, the Pro Bono Committee, the Personnel Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Programs Committee, among others. He had previously served as Chairman of the Corporate Counsel Section.
Doug is Senior Vice President and Deputy General Counsel for Union Bank & Trust where he practices in the area of commercial litigation, bankruptcy and lending matters. Prior to joining Union Bank & Trust, Doug was General Counsel of StellarOne Bank from 2009 to 2014. Doug served as senior litigation counsel for

Samuel T. Towell has been appointed Deputy Attorney General for Civil Litigation in the Office of Attorney General Mark R. Herring. The Civil Litigation Division is composed of the Trial, Consumer Protection, and Health Profession Sections, the Divisions of Human Rights and Debt Collection, and the Insurance and Utilities Regulatory Section.

Call for Attorney Volunteers to Serve on Medical Malpractice Review Panels
The Supreme Court of Virginia has asked the Virginia State Bar to provide an updated list of attorneys willing to serve on Medical Malpractice Review Panels (MMRP). Attor-neys who are interested in serving should submit a letter of interest and a resume to Karen A. Gould, Executive Director, Virginia State Bar at [email protected] on or before June 7, 2017. To be qualified to serve, the attorney must be (1) impartial, (2) an active in-good-standing member of the Virginia State Bar, and (3) actively practicing. Sixty members will be appointed, but the terms will be staggered with one-third of the members to be rotated off each year. Further information on the MMRP process can be found at Va. Code § 8.01-581.3. The Medical Malpractice Rules of Practice can be found in Volume 11 of the Code and online at http://www.vacourts.gov/courts/scv/medmalrules.pdf. Doug Callaway becomes Association’s 133rd President
Wachovia/Wells Fargo Corporation and predecessors for 24 years. While at Wa-chovia Securities, he served as arbitration counsel. He was appointed an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange and the National Association of Securities Dealers now FINRA (Financial Industry Regula-tory Authority) and he has held the Series 7, 9, 10, 14, 24, 63, and 65 securities licenses. He still serves as an arbitrator for FINRA.
Doug graduated magna cum laude from the University of Richmond in 1977, where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, and received his law degree, also from the University of Richmond in 1980.
Doug has been actively involved in bar matters throughout his career, and has also served as the Chair of the Virginia Bankers Association’s Legal Affairs Committee. He has served as Chair of the Corporate

The Honorable Bob Brewbaker is a former trial lawyer who for twenty-seven
years represented both plaintiffs and defendants in disputes including personal
injury and medical malpractice. Following his tenure as a trial lawyer, Judge
Brewbaker served as a Juvenile & Domestic Relations Judge for a decade, during
