OUR LADY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCHFirst Sunday of Advent

He Shall Be PeaceThe news each day is not a source of comfort and peace. Our phones, tablets and screens confront us with pictures and videos of hurricane and fire de-struction, violence and deaths in multiple mass shootings, growing homelessness in our local community, suffering of refugees fleeing drug wars, ac-counts of abuse by famous enter-tainers, and worse – by Catholic priests and bishops. It seems that we simply move each day from tragedy to tragedy – numbed by overwhelming statistics. Where can we find peace?

Today we begin the season of Advent. In this liturgical time of waiting for the Lord, we search for peace in our hearts and in our lives. In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus cautions the disciples to, “Beware that your hearts become drowsy… with the anxieties of daily life!” Jesus, the Living Word, is speaking directly to us now in 2018. How will we open our hearts during this Advent season to allow Jesus to BE OUR PEACE? In Christ alone, we live and move and have our being. He Shall Be Peace.

Pray Peace.

The season of Advent invites us to take time as individu-als and as a parish to go deeper in prayer to experience God’s abiding presence and peace. Taking time for prayer means making time for prayer! That is not easy as we juggle busy lives, family and work responsibilities, and in-vitations to Christmas gatherings with family and friends.

No, really. How will you make time to pray peace this Ad-

vent? Here are three practical suggestions that can help you invite peace:

ONE: Come to Mass – Early.

Seriously. Make the decision that you will be in church at least 10 minutes

early on the four weekends of Ad-vent and spend the time in per-sonal reflection and prayer. You will be surprised at how that ex-tra time to focus opens your ears and heart to hear the scriptures and experience the prayer of the

liturgy. Once again this year, we will dim the lights for the Entrance

procession as the candles of the Advent wreath lead the ministers into the Church

and we sing a simple refrain with that week’s Entrance antiphon. We will sing the Penitential Act

(Lord, have mercy) and begin using the Belmont Mass, an English chant setting, for our responses during Mass.

TWO: Commit to Daily Prayer

It’s easier than you think. You can easily spend ten min-utes waiting in line for a latte at Starbucks! If you have a ready-to-go prayer app next to that Starbucks app, you can flip over to read a daily Advent reflection from FORMED.org instead of reading the latest news bul-letin or checking your social media. Prayer – time with the Lord – takes commitment. So, make the new liturgi-cal year resolution to pray each day. Sign up is easy and FREE as a subscription from OLL. Liturgy, Music and Prayer

Wine & Cheese Fellowship Saturday Evening, December 8If you attend the Saturday Evening Mass at 5:00 PM at Our Lady of the Lake, please join your fellow parishioners for a friendly gathering right after Mass in the Parish Hall. This month we get together Saturday, December 8 at about 6:00 PM. We will enjoy some wine, cheese and other light fare. This is a great opportunity to meet and spend time with some great people in a relaxed atmosphere. Feel free to bring a snack to share. All are welcome.

Advent Liturgy and Prayer During Advent, our Entrance rite at weekend Masses will include singing an Entrance chant, Come Be Our Peace, which incorporates the Entrance antiphon for that Sunday as the Advent candle for that week is processed and placed on the Advent wreath. We dim the lights to increase our focus on the coming of Christ renewed in our hearts and lives. As we continue with the Penitential Act, the chant of the Lord, Have Mercy accompanies our prayer and preparation. Finally, the lights return to full as we listen to the Advent scriptures which emphasize the prophecies that foretold the Messiah.

A New Mass Setting for AdventDuring Advent, we will once again sing the Belmont Mass – a very simple chant melody for the Alleluia, Holy-Holy, Mystery of Faith, Amen, and Lamb of God responses and acclamations we sing during the Mass. It has a prayerful, easy-to-learn style that particularly suites the Advent season. You will find it on our Order of Worship and also in Breaking Bread #843-850.

New Breaking Bread 2019 HymnalsThis week, the OLL 7th Graders helped exchange the Breaking Bread hymnals to their 2019 edition. The green and gold cover im-age is a stunning reflection of the cross through the “lens” of the Holy Eucharist. Truly, breaking bread! Some people have asked why we change hymnals each year. Good question! Each year, OCP – the publisher of these resources – includes a number of recently-composed hymns and songs written by current composers, giving us new repertoire to incorporate into our Masses alongside favorite hymns and songs from the recent and ancient past. The Holy Spirit continues to inspire song-writers to reflect the signs of our times and give us new melodies to accompany and refresh our prayer.

Christmas by Candlelight Concert – December 9The highly-talented UNISTUS Chamber Choir will present their “Christmas by Candlelight” concert on Sunday, December 9 at 1:30 PM in the Church. This year the program features a variety of in-spired arrangements of Advent and Christmas favorites along with an array of wonderful new compositions. Guest artist, Kathrina Leavitt, violinist, will perform on several pieces. Don’t miss this ex-hilarating performance of choral music that proclaims peace, love and joy. Tickets are available at the door.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Next Saturday, December 8, we celebrate our blessed Mother’s Immaculate Conception – a holy day of obligation. Because this holy day this year falls on a Saturday, we will only have two op-portunities for Mass:

y Friday, December 7 at 7:00 PM (Vigil Mass)

y Saturday, December 8 at 8:15 AM

The 5 PM evening Mass on December 8 will be the vigil for the Second Sunday of Advent. Join us that evening for our monthly wine and cheese fellowship after Mass.

Subscribe to Dynamic Catholic’s “Best Advent Ever” Daily Advent Reflection (Best Advent Ever) that are also available on your phone or tablet. Make it easy to stay faithful to the ritual of daily prayer by embedding prayer into your daily routine.

THREE: Go to Confession

Take time in the season of Advent to experience God’s mercy and grace in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. We will have two parish Reconciliation Services: the first is on Saturday December 8 at 10 AM, and second on Tues-day, December 11 at 7 PM. Individual confession is also available each Saturday afternoon from 3:00 – 4:30 PM. This year, Fr. Kerns or Fr. Marshall will be available for individual confession on the four Sundays of Advent mornings from 10:20-11:20 (between the Masses) in the confessional.

This Advent - take advantage of these additional oppor-tunities to “pray peace.”

OLL Spanish Students Celebrate Dia de los Muertos

In Our Lady of the Lake Catholic School, students learned that Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. The two annual events differ greatly in traditions and

tone. Whereas Halloween is a dark night of terror, mischief and candy, Day of the Dead festivities include two days of color and life-affirming joy.

OLL students got into a com-petition to see which grade could build the best Dia de los Muertos altar, the cen-terpiece of the celebration. Altars or Ofrendas aren’t for worshipping; rather, they’re meant to welcome spirits back to the realm of the living. As such, they’re loaded with offerings—water to quench thirst after the long journey, food, family photos, and a candle for each dead relative.

Marigolds are the main flowers used to decorate the altar. Scat-tered from altar to gravesite, marigold petals guide wandering souls back to their place of rest. The smoke from copal incense, made from tree resin, transmits praise and prayers and purifies

the area around the altar. This year, fifth grade won the con-test for the best altar honoring no other than the greatest Dr. Seuss! Students in this grade got a party with special treats for them. What a great opportunity to learn about other cultures and have fun at the same time.

Food insecurity impairs academic development of young school-age chil-dren. A recent study revealed that the reading and mathematical skills of food insecure children entering kindergarten developed significantly more slowly than other children.

School teachers are tasked with support-ing children who do not get enough to eat at home far beyond their average, well-fed students. This need is even greater after a holiday break.

So excited for all of the middle school students each week where we are studying the Kingdom of God and reflecting on Jesus leading us with love and humility, and how He differs from earthly kings. We enjoy playing outside on the field and building community!

Sunday, 12/2 at 6:15 PM | Parish Hall

This Sunday, Confirmation meets off-site at host homes to share faith, food, and fellowship. We are

so blessed by our 6 host homes and hosts!

Life Teen is in the Parish Hall where our 9 amazing volunteers and 9 fantastic youth ambassadors will continue helping us focus on the Person of Jesus

and prayer.

Learn Hands–Only CPR and Be Ready to Save a Life

Did you know that every minute CPR is delayed, a victim’s chance of survival decreases by 10%? There is one gift you can give your loved one that they may never see. But, if you have it ready to give, you just may help them stay alive.

Make the 45-minute commitment and learn how to save a life. Lake Oswego Fire and Police will be here on at 10:20 AM on December 9 in the Parish Hall Carpeted area to teach us the skill of Hands-Only CPR. This method of CPR is recognized by the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association and recommended for those people who may not want to get involved or, are reluctant about putting their mouth on someone else’s. Assistant Fire Chief David Morris and Police Chief Dale Jorgensen and other police de-partment members explain this form of immediate CPR.

Mercy Team volunteers have joined together to provide over 430 individual parishioner “touches of love” so far this year.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving 25 Mercy Teams volun-teers came together to serve a hot breakfast to 60 to 70 home-less. We had an amazing amount of donated clothing to hand out as well. Mercy Teams needs blankets, winter caps, winter gloves. If you can help, please bring these to the parish hall.
