New 4-H Member Day

New 4-H Member Day was held at the Carson Community Center on Sunday, December 3rd

from 2:00—3:00pm for all new 4-H members and their parents. While the parents spent the

afternoon learning the basics about 4-H, about our specialty 4-H clubs and the different

events have happen yearly in East Pottawattamie County, youth were led in hands on activi-

ties by the County Youth Council learning about the opportunities in 4-H!

Market Beef Weigh In Winter market beef weigh in was held on Wednesday, December 27th from 9:00am—

10:30am at the Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds in Avoca. All market beef showing at

county fair, Iowa State Fair and Aksarben were required to weigh in. Those showing out of

county were required to be identified and retinal imaged. 22 head of beef for East Potta-

wattamie were weighed in. A big thank you to FFA advisor Jennifer Sellner, Fair board mem-

bers Dakota Feigenbutz & Nick Bates, County Youth Council member Sidney Nelsen & all the

others that stuck around and braved the cold to help out at beef weigh in!

Don’t forget to verify your market beef in 4-H Online by February 1st! Log into your 4-H

Online account, select “edit” next the exhibitor, select “Livestock/Animals” tab in the upper

left hand corner, a list of all market beef will be shown—select each individual animal and

“verify” that all information is correct under each animal. DO NOT verify if information is not

correct! Please call Hallie 712.482.6449 or email [email protected] to have corrections

made BEFORE verifying. After February 1st, all entries will be final!

4-H Builds Resilience Volunteer Training Each year County 4-H volunteers are required to attend one county wide volunteer training.

This year volunteer training will be held at the Carson Community Center on Wednesday, Jan-

uary 17th at 6:30pm, a light meal will be provided. If you received a post card in the mail, this

is required for you! Mark your calendar today! RSVP is required to Hallie at

[email protected] by January 15th!

Natural Connections On February 26th 4:00pm—6:00pm the Pottawattamie County Soil Conservation will be hosting Natural Connections at Botna Bend in Hancock. The Pottawattamie County Soil Con-servation is looking for help running a clothing drive for the event & help with picking up after the meal. They are also open to a 4-H club setting up a display to share what 4-H is! Contact Hallie if you or your club is interested in more details on this event!

FairEntry

A new county fair entry system, FairEntry is in the works! As technology continues to grow &

change, our way of programming does as well! FairEntry is a program that is connected to 4-

H Online that is designed for 4-H & FFA families to submit all fair entries online with infor-

mation directly from your 4-H Online entries and information. You can be expecting to see

new information and step by step directions as fair and entry time comes closer!

Pottawattamie County Fair Book

The 2017-2018 Pottawattamie County Fair book has had a face lift! It is now available to view on 4-H Online and ISU Extension website! Please read through this thoroughly, as changes have been made throughout the entire book. Printed books will be available for 4-H families & leaders in the spring.

Fair Requirement

REQUIREMENT: All 4-H members are required to attend 4 club meetings throughout the 4-H year, in order to participate at county fair. 4 meetings must be attended from September 2017—June 2018.

Citizenship Washington Focus

The Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF) is a 4-H leadership program for high school youth. Every summer, teens from across the country gather at the National 4-H Conference Center near Washington D.C., to learn what it means to be a strong leader in their community, coun-try and world. 4-H Scholarships

Are you an Iowa 4-H’er planning to attend college? The Iowa 4-H Foundation knows it’s not easy to finance a college education, and we know that many Iowa 4-H’ers can use help achiev-ing their education goals. Consider applying for an Iowa 4-H Scholarship, funded by donors through the Iowa 4-H Foundation.

This is designed to encourage Iowa 4-H members to continue their education beyond high school, the current scholarship program offers over 90 scholarships worth more than $100,000. Scholarships ranging in value from $500 to $10,000.

FSQA

In today’s world, food safety is one of animal producers’ biggest responsibilities. With over 15,000 Iowa 4-

H’ers enrolled in livestock projects, about 17 million pounds of meat is produced each year. The goal of FSQA

is to help youth and their parents better understand what they can do to produce the safest food possible.

All youth showing livestock must be FSQA certified prior to registering for the county fair.

4-6th graders—must attend a training each year to be certified

7-9 graders— may either test out of their age group or may attend annual training

10-12 graders— may either test out of their age group or may attend annual training

East Pottawattamie will offer 1 more day of FSQA testing & training. Advance RSVP is required!

Wednesday, March 7th 5:30pm FSQA Testing; 6:30pm FSQA Training @ Oakland Community Center. RSVP by

March 1st.

If you cannot attend the testing or training on March 7th, please contact Hallie for a list of neighboring county

trainings in the area.

Family Fun Day The East Pottawattamie County Youth Council is hosting “Family Fun Day” for all East Potta-

wattamie County Clover Kids, 4-H members & their families. The County Youth Council is in-

viting 4-H Clubs to have a booth at Family Fun Day on Sunday, March 11th from 2:00—4:00pm

at the Oakland Community Center. Booths should provide fun hands on activities for our

youth that may be anything from a STEM activity to a carnival game such as making a boat

that floats, putt putt golf or bean bag toss. Clubs may provide small prizes or a take home

item for the youth, but is not required. Family Fun Day will be a free and fun afternoon for all

East Pottawattamie County 4-H youth to come together for a day of fun! If you would like to

have a booth, please email Hallie at [email protected] with your club activity and the amount

of space you will need by March 1st!
