Creative, forward-thinking and bold, UWE Bristol is an ambitious university at the heart of one of the UK’s most vibrant cities. From our creative industries to robotics, we are recognized for our innovative teaching, our connections to industry, and our influential and high-impact research.
With strong global and local connections, we offer an inspiring, diverse work environment where students can develop their skills and experience so they are ready for their future.
WELCOME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF THE WEST OF ENGLAND, BRISTOL
I am delighted you are considering joining our senior leadership team within the Faculty of Arts, Creative and Education (ACE).
This has been a year of great achievement for the University. We opened our ACE facility at our Bower Ashton Campus as well as our new Bristol Business School and Bristol Law School building, established one of only four University Enterprise Zones in the country, and bucked the national trend in student recruitment admissions growth.
The Centre for Fine Print (CFPR) within ACE is going from strength to strength. We are honoured to be recipients of a £7.7m grant from Research England’s Expanding Excellence fund to grow the CFPR’s outstanding and innovative research. This fund will now allow the Centre to work ever more closely with partners to tackle big challenges around printing.
We saw fantastic results in the annual National Student Survey, with student satisfaction rising for the third consecutive year to 88% - making us top of all the universities in the South West.
With the sixth largest student intake of any university within the University Alliance Mission Group, we are proud that our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Our graduates go on to have successful careers, making a real impact on the world. This year’s employment statistics demonstrate a strong performance, with over 95% of our graduates in employment or further study within six months.
In the second year of the Teaching Excellence Framework – introduced by the Government to reward excellent learning and teaching in Higher Education – we were delighted to be awarded gold.
We owe our success to our dedicated staff and students, and a strong commitment to our Strategy 2030 goals. Well on the way to achieving these goals, we are now looking towards 2030. We want to continue to be bold and innovative, ensuring we differentiate ourselves by focusing on our key strengths – our outstanding learning, our ready and able graduates, our research with impact, and our strategic partnerships.
Yours sincerely, Professor Steve West CBE, DLVice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Officer
OUR STRATEGY 2030Our Strategy 2030 maps out the journey we are taking as a university to ensure our graduates are well positioned for the future and puts research with impact at the heart of what we do. The outstanding learning experience we provide at UWE Bristol supports the development of innovative, creative and courageous graduates who are passionate about their subjects and curious to learn more. But equipping our students to play their part in a changing, fast-moving global economy requires that we keep developing, keep enhancing and keep investing in what we do.
With this in mind, we have identified the areas that we see as being critical for us to focus on as we grow and develop as a University between now and 2030, in line with the core purpose and values that underpin and guide the way we work.
We’ve spent more than £300m on new and improved facilities across our campuses that will enable our students, research and enterprise to flourish. A real highlight has been the opening of the new Bristol Business School and Business Law School, which provides an inspiring business culture experience for our students. Work has also been completed on a new £9m building at Bower Ashton on our City Campus. The new building delivers an integrated learning environment where students work on pioneering projects alongside our industry partners.
In a challenging national climate for universities, including a backdrop of a 2% reduction in the number of students applying to university, UWE Bristol has actually seen an overall increase in our number of applications.
We’re extremely proud of what we’ve achieved and optimistic about where we are headed.

INTRODUCTION FROM THE DEAN OF ACEACE is a creative, ambitious and inclusive Faculty, and I am immensely proud of our staff, students, and facilities. In recent months, we have invested in two new state-of-the-art buildings at Bower Ashton Campus. Providing industry standard Film Studios, and a multi-disciplinary Fabrication Centre. These give our students and staff outstanding opportunities and experiences.
As a practice-based Faculty, partnership lies at the heart of the high quality student experience we provide. Our new partnership with the iconic Arnolfini Art Gallery and Arts Council England, will help us to develop a new vision for Visual Arts in the Bristol region, and we will continue to grow our strategic partnership portfolio to provide our students with industry-relevant skills.
We are thrilled with the recent funding awarded to our Centre for Fine Print Research to expand their excellent research. This achievement is going to enable growth and development for the Centre, and for the School of Art and Design, unlocking the potential of new recruits, new industry partners and a new research focus for the team across the department. Last year, the centre was shortlisted as one of 3 nominations highly commended by the Times Higher Awards for its work with Burleigh Pottery to help the iconic company continue printing its traditional print patterns on pottery.
Our reputation for research excellence in the creative Industries continues to grow as we lead a succession of multi-million pound AHRC Creative collaborative projects. The major projects highlight some of the most important aspects of our way of working – sector-leading research; co-creativity with extensive industry partners; and an unrivalled student experience.
We are a Faculty open to learners from all backgrounds and with a range of ambitions. As we move forward we will look to expand the range of opportunities open to our students, staff, and partners both nationally and internationally. We have achieved fantastic results for all our stakeholders and we will now build on this success to prepare for the next generation of creators, educators and leaders.

E3 AWARD WIN The Centre for Fine Print Research (CFPR), a world-renowned research centre, sits within the ACE Faculty. In June 2019, it was announced that the centre had been awarded a £7.7 million award from Research England’s Expanding Excellence call (E3) to undertake a range of research projects over the next 3 years. This is the largest, single bid ever awarded to a UWE Bristol research centre. A huge feat for CFPR and an incredible source of pride for the Faculty.
There are already a number of key, high-profile partners attached to the CFPR and the E3 project, such as Burleigh Potteries, Pangolin, National Trust, Crafts Council, Toshiba, and many others. These key links will enable CFPR and colleagues across the Faculty to continue to increase both UWE and Bristol’s reputation in the University Enterprise Zone, with the development of significant collaborations across engineering, robotics and healthcare.
The E3 award recognises that CFPR can and will make significant changes and contribute to the future of printing technologies. It will present an opportunity for the CFPR to undertake strategic expansion and enable investment in the people and talent required to develop research excellence in a sustainable way. 19 new appointments will be recruited into the centre, an incredible scale-up and a clear display of the benefits that this huge investment offers. The centre’s core research themes will guide the CFPR as it makes new appointments, continues to establish long-term industry relationships, and as it develops and delivers work that is impactful. In particular, the team will be looking at: transformative technologies, reconstructing historic methods and 3D-printing.
STUDENT SUCCESS
UWE Bristol’s graduates are going on to have successful careers, with over 95% of our graduates in employment or further study within six months.Source: DLHE (Destination of Leavers from Higher Education) Survey 2017.
STUDENT SUCCESSOur students are known for their drive to achieve, securing high-profile internships and being involved in gallery events from early on in their programmes. These involvements allow the students to develop practice-based research and create networks, often International, in the ever-expanding art world.
Early this year, three of our Fashion students, Beatrice Stoneham, Ben Lord and Fiona Baker, were awarded prestigious bursaries from the historic City of London Livery Company. Beatrice, Ben and Fiona had stood out to the judges with their proposals, creating a rare instance where all three bursaries up for grans went to UWE students. Their works were inspired by and themed around the role of shadows and negative spaces in Japanese architecture and sustainable practises, such as utilising zero-waste approaches.
This Summer, two of our Fine Art students, Kelly Hohmann and Isobel Manley, are going to be taking part in Fellowships in the Venice Biennale. These were awarded by the British Council, who will offer Kelly and Isobel professional training as they work in the British Pavilion.
We understand that links to the industry and real-world experience such as these are key to our students and their success. We are proud of the motivation and passion to thrive are students have from day one.
THIS IS YOUR BRISTOL
Bristol was named the Most Artistic City in the UK, 2019 and, in 2017, the Best City to live in. Happiest City. Kindest city. Most beautiful city.Source: 2019 Premier Inn Study, 2017 Sunday Times best places to live guide.
Bristol is a vibrant, welcoming, creative, smart and diverse city, open to the new, open for business, open to everyone.
We’re biased, of course, but it’s hard to think of a better UK city to study and work in. Music, tech, culture, clubs, shopping, sports, art, festivals, fashion and food. Not to mention Wallace and Gromit, and the artist we know and love as Banksy. Bristol has it all.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Bristol is thriving. From the creative industries to engineering, high-tech to healthcare, from established blue-chips to fast-emerging start-ups, businesses and employers alike realise what a great place this is.
That’s brilliant news for you and your future career. You really couldn’t be better placed.
