Our Core ValuesGLORIFYING GOD

We seek to glorify God in all activities and relationships and in the use of the resources God has given us.

Our Christian faith in God is woven into the fabric of LCA, its classes, clubs and activities, rehearsals, performances, practices,

and games.

PARTNERSHIPWe view the education of children as a partnership

between parents and the Academy.LCA is a community where we work together and

encourage one another to achieve our individual and common goals. Open communication is central to this partnership.

TRUTHWe acknowledge absolute truth, as revealed in God’s Word and through His creation, and its relevance in our lives.LCA’s teachers and staff are committed to helping students discover the truth and think critically in the classroom, and in real life.

RESPECTEach person is created in God’s image and therefore will be treated with respect.Respect is at the foundation of all we do—respect for one another and for each other.

EXCELLENCEContinuous improvement and the pursuit of excellence will underlie all that we do.

It is our goal to help each student, faculty, and staff member achieve his or her very

best.

HONESTYOur relationships and academic performance are

based on honesty and fairness.LCA is a safe place. There is trust between the

students and faculty. We compete fairly and with integrity.

Lexington Christian Academy admits students of any race, color, religious affiliation, and national and ethnic origin to all the rights,

privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at our school. This school is authorized under Federal law to

enroll nonimmigrant students.

From: Head of School

Dear LCA Friend,

As we approach the holiday sea-son, we have much to be thankful for

at Lexington Christian Academy. The classroom, the athletic field, the stage, the

world – these are places our students, faculty, and alumni have had the opportunity to engage with

ideas, to think critically, to minister, to excel. We are blessed with the breadth of opportunities available through LCA: students compete in the MIT/NASA

space competition and take first place, an alumnus signs a professional soccer con-tract, faculty travel the globe, students connect with their faith through Veritas, a

missions team travels to New Orleans to help rebuild after Hurricane Katrina.

We are especially grateful for these opportunities because we know that so many of them are only possible through your generosity. At LCA, like other independent schools, tuition

only covers a portion of the actual cost to educate each student. This past spring we hosted Thanks4Giving, a celebration of generosity. Students had the opportunity to write thank

you notes to LCA donors. It is our hope that these events raise awareness of the vital role philanthropy plays in the day-to-day lives of our students, educating and inspiring students, families, and donors to live lives of generosity.

One student shared a particularly poignant word, writing: “I appreciate the investment you have made in my education and overall future. A stable environment to become a woman of God and to decide what my future is going to look like is such a huge gift.” We, too, want to say thank you.

Your commitment to LCA, through both your giving and your prayers, has helped shape LCA into the place it is today. LCA turns students into scholars – two seniors received National Merit scholarships, an alumnus is awarded a Fulbright and travels to Kuwait to study solar energy. LCA students learn what it means to be the hands and feet of

Christ – students engage their faith in the classroom, they reach out to students across the globe in Liberia. LCA Faculty exemplify joyful learning – they travel to South

Korea and England to continue their own education, strengthening their students’ experiences in the classroom. Opportunities abound here.

We thank you for the many ways you have contributed and supported LCA. You are an important part of the LCA community. We are so grateful

for your partnership as we seek to educate young men and women to be leaders, thinkers, and followers of Christ.

Sincerely,

This past March, 11 students traveled to New Orleans to serve those still affected by Hurricane Katrina. Students were able to do practical work for others. Through this, they encountered the poor and weak, and began to develop hearts to love and serve the least among us.

“They were able to get a taste of an amazing American city, while at the same time serving others as the hands and feet of Christ. – Jeremy Alexander, Chaplain and Bible Instructor

Gifts listed reflect the generous donations received during our fiscal year July 1, 2010—June 30, 2011 Faculty Grants 2010-2011The Edward and Jennie VanderBrug GrantThe Edward and Jennie VanderBrug Grant is given to promote the development of “outside the box” thinking. The grant provides funding for faculty members who dream of pursuing ideas that link to the classroom curriculum, or interface with the LCA mission, and for which there is not conventional funding.English teacher, Karen Elliott, was the recipient of the Edward and Jennie VanderBrug Grant for 2010-2011. The grant allowed Karen to travel to Seoul, South Korea last July. While there, she attended an AP College Board Conference to reinforce her knowledge of the curriculum for the AP course she teaches in Literature and Composition. Karen also had the opportunity to meet some of LCA’s international students and their families. This immersion experience helped her better understand the perspective of our international students who must learn to navigate a culture that is unfamiliar to them. Additionally, she was able to serve as an LCA ambassador, promoting the Academy to prospective students and connecting with alumni families in the Seoul area.

The Lawrence-Swallow GrantThe Lawrence-Swallow Grant is given to help a faculty member participate in a conference or other professional event that is related to his or her field and that will enhance his or her teaching. Lori Macdonald was accepted to participate in the East Asian Studies Center at Indiana University’s 12th Annual Teaching East Asian Literature in the High School Workshop. Through the Lawrence-Swallow Grant, Lori traveled to Bloomington, Indiana for the week-long workshop. Lori had the rare privilege of studying with scholars of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean literature and history. She returns with a wealth of knowledge on how to incorporate these topics into the high school classroom.

The Sam and June Schultz GrantThis Grant provides funding to enhance teaching by allowing a faculty member to

participate in a conference or other professional event. Priority is given to activities that will enhance faith and learning.

David Jackson participated in the Conference on Faith and History (CFH) at George Fox University last fall through the support of the Sam and June Schultz Grant. In addition to listening to scholarly papers by leading Christian Historians, David helped facilitate discussions on the involvement of secondary school history teachers in the activities of the CFH. This was a special opportunity to promote LCA, as the 2012 gathering is scheduled to take place at Gordon College. David has offered LCA’s support in the planning, marketing, and hosting of the 2012 conference. He will be working in coordination with the CFH and Gordon College historians.

The Dr. J. Barry and Rev. Delianne Koops Endowed Faculty ChairThe tradition of an endowed chair is a way of recognizing exceptional teaching. The Dr. J. Barry and Rev. Delianne Koops Faculty Chair is a term chair (3-5 years), which is passed on to a succession of recipients. This chair honors Dr. Koops’ legacy by recognizing an LCA faculty member who exemplifies mastery of the art and science of teaching.Henry “Jake” Hoffman recently completed his five-year term as the recipient of the Dr. J. Barry and Rev. Delianne Koops Endowed Faculty Chair. Jake was honored with this distinction for his mastery of the art and science of teaching,

his example of strong Christian faith, his passion for science, and his abiding interest in his students. Throughout his tenure, Jake had the opportunity to

attend numerous physics and chemistry conferences. These conferences covered topics including: integrating the use of computers in chemistry

education; emphasizing inquiry-based labs; more effective methods for teaching Advanced Placement chemistry; including essential

questions in chemistry education. These conferences provided Jake with innovative approaches to teaching chemistry and

physics, strengthening the science curriculum at LCA. If you would like to give a gift to the Dr. J. Barry and Rev.

Delianne Koops Faculty Chair, please address it to the Development Office, indicating Koops Chair.

From Round Worms to Immigrant StoriesFive seniors completed their Advanced Senior Research Projects, which require a year of research, study, and creative use of their intellect. Topics ranged from “Autistic Characters in Literature,” to “Studying the Pathway of Aging through C.Elegans,” to “Writing Short Fictional Stories of Immigrants,” to “Optimal Growth Conditions in Aribidopsis thaliana,” and “Ruborg.”

Hot, Hot SunDarcy E. Dwyer, class of 2007, is figuring out a way to harness the hot sun of Kuwait. She received a Fulbright Scholarship to study solar energy and its potential uses in preventing blackouts in Kuwait during hot summers.

“I’ve been a student at LCA for almost seven years now, so I can say that the teachers were a huge part of why I’ve been able to accomplish this. It’s not just doing well on a test that you’ve crammed for; you have to be able to think clearly and logically though different kinds of problems. That doesn’t come instantly: you have to be taught it.” – Tyler Kehne, ’11

No words that I could ever use would satisfactorily express the gratitude that my family and I feel, but I know this: in Proverbs 22:9, it is written, “A generous man will be

blessed, for he shares his food (treasures) with the poor.” – LCA student

It has been our daughter’s dream to come to LCA and she has been praying for this since she was in 3rd grade. As parents we knew it

was financially impossible to realize such a dream, and we told it to her. She listened to everything and said to us: “God is

the owner of everything, so I will pray.” And she prayed for this ever since, and we prayed along! Eventually, it

was time to apply for high school and once more she wanted to apply to LCA, so we decided to come

in faith counting on God alone, for if it was His will He would have to open the doors and provide what for us was impossible. Since He never fails, He has used all of you to bless us beyond imagination.

– LCA parents

Thank you so much for the generous gift you have given me. LCA is like a sec-ond home to me, and I am so glad that I have the privilege of attending this school again next year. I am so grateful! – LCA student

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for granting us the opportunity to give our son a world-class education in an environment where he will grow spiritually.

We are incredibly grateful! We can’t wait to be a part of and contribute to the LCA

family, and we thank you for your generosity.– LCA parents

A day barely passes without our daughter com-menting about the wonders of her day or the things

she has learned. She has never been as happy a learner as when she entered LCA. This school not

only positively affects its children; it tenderly reaches par-ents as well.

– LCA parents

Thank you for helping me afford a great LCA education. LCA continues to help me grow academically and spiritually. This gives me

a bright future as I will be able to attend college, which LCA is preparing me for. LCA is a pleasure to attend now, and will be a great part of my future

even after I leave LCA. Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to develop relationships and have memories here at LCA.

– LCA student

A celebration of generosity!Students wrote thank you notes to the donors who generously support LCA.

Thanks4Giving! DayOn April 19th, 2011 the LCA community hosted

Thanks4Giving Day, a celebration of generosity. As part of the festivities, students dined on a delicious, Thanksgiving-

inspired meal, including homemade pies. Later, in keeping with the spirit of Thanksgiving, students had the opportunity to write notes of

gratitude to our donors. Students wrote about the areas where they were involved at LCA, and the ways in which donors were making a real differ-

ence in their lives.

We chose April 19th to celebrate Thanks4Giving Day because this marks the approximate point in the school year when tuition dollars stop covering the costs to

operate the Academy. The remaining costs are covered by gifts from donors and other revenue sources. As so many of the students wrote in their notes (a sampling of which

are included throughout this publication), donor support is integral in allowing us to provide such a broad range of opportunities to students at LCA.

LCA is grateful for our active and loyal donors. For that reason we have set apart this special day to raise awareness of the vital role that donors play in the everyday life of stu-dents. We are blessed by our donors who are making a Christian college preparatory educa-tion accessible to as many students as possible. We hope that days like this foster a sense of stewardship and philanthropy among the LCA community.

“Water can mean life, death, grief, joy, danger, healing, fragility, power.”– Andy Macdonald, LCA Theatre Director

A 12-foot-wide pool surrounded by a semicircular deck functioned as the stage for LCA’s production of “Metamorphoses.” With 10 actors playing over 70 characters, the number of costume changes required hours of careful planning and rehearsal! Water provided a powerful and compelling medium for telling the story.

Students Supporting StudentsHelping Our World (HOW) Club partnered with the Art department for an Empty Bowls Fundraising Dinner. Guests received a handmade ceramic bowl glazed by LCA students and a cup of homemade soup. The funds raised were donated to Christian development organization, Rebuild Africa, to support students of the Monrovia School in Liberia.

Spiritual Emphasis Week 2011, funded through the Kenneth A. McCowan Christian Emphasis Endowment Fund, featured guest speaker Nate Parks, Camp Berea’s director of programs and operations. The week allowed students, faculty, and staff a break to focus on God’s work in their hearts, minds, and lives.

Serving their CommunityLCA students have a heart for service. Each year many visit the community nursing home, rake leaves, clean up the woods, and participate in mission trips.

Carina is a competitive swimmer, training six days a week for a total of almost 20 hours. All her hard work paid off when she qualified for the National Club Swimming Association Junior Nationals this past season.

“I love touching the wall in each race and looking up to see the scoreboard.” – Carina Zhang ’12.

“It feels great to share your faith in such a wonderful environment.” – LCA student

“We are continuing the process of helping students find answers that are true and that can form a strong foundation of faith in Christ.”

– James Talkington

LCA’s Veritas Forum provides the space for students to ask hard questions. Keynote speakers Gabe Lyons and Christopher Greco discussed topics ranging from “The Next Christians,” to the “Prodigal God,” to the link between artistic endeavors and the sharing of faith in a variety of mediums.
