Head of Sport and Activities—Mr Dave Capra
We had a fantastic start to the sporting year on Saturday with 18 games of cricket played against Gregory Terrace. It was won-
derful to see continuing and new boys coming together to enjoy playing competitive cricket. I would like to thank the many fam-
ilies who came along to support their sons at the games and contributed to the wonderful community atmosphere that Saturday
morning sport creates.
I would like to congratulate our boys for the positive sportsmanlike way in which they conducted themselves on the field over
the weekend. We are looking forward to a great season ahead.
Term 1 Sport
Sport at ATC will really begin to ramp up over the coming week with all training beginning as per the timetable included in this
newsletter. Information regarding each of the sports that boys signed on for has either been emailed directly to parents or is
included in this newsletter edition.
The sport and activities timetable that we have developed for 2016 is the culmination of a significant amount of planning with
music, sport and activities staff to ensure that boys are able to purse a variety of co-curricular activities whilst ensuring they
maintain a strong focus on academics. You will notice that there are multiple training sessions in the mornings for sports; boys
are to choose which of these they attend so as not to clash with their music commitments. The afternoon team training sessions
are compulsory as coaches will work directly with their teams on whole team skills and strategies. At ATC, music and sport in
particular are dedicated to collaboration, not competition and coaches, coordinators and tutors will work to support boys in both
areas.
Queensland Combined Independent Schools
At the end of 2015 we announced the formation of our new sport association (QCIS) with the foundation schools being ATC,
Brigidine College, Scots PGC, Downlands College and Toowoomba Anglican College and Preparatory School. Over the holidays
we have had a number of Brisbane schools express interest in this association and over the coming weeks and months we will be
meeting with these schools to investigate the sporting opportunities that will come from this group of schools.
The fundamental purpose of the QCIS is to bring schools together for healthy, structured and competitive sporting opportunities.
In 2016 we will participate in the inaugural QCIS Swimming, Cross Country and Track and Field Championships as well asfixtures
and carnival days in team sports. The focus in our Championship events will be to provide to a large number of divisions and
events to ensure that the most number of students possible are able to compete. As the association grows in strength and num-
bers, we are looking forward to the competitive opportunities that it will offer the ATC boys to compliment the other fixtures and
competitions which we are a part of.
Team Sport Draws
Initially, the QCIS will offer team sporting fixtures across some sports (as we saw against these schools in Rugby, Football and
Cricket in 2015) for some teams. At ATC we are blessed with having a community that values participation in sport and we are
committed to providing meaningful competitive opportunities for all boys and all teams. To provide these opportunities we will
continue to work with a variety of schools across a number of competitions to organise fixtures in team sports. As such we can-
not always provide a long term draw for all teams; we will however ensure that draws are communicated to parents in as timely
and efficient manner as possible. Thanks for your support in this area.

ATC Cross Country Welcome to our second year of ATC Cross Country. We are all excited to get started and pick up from

putting the following sessions in place as of next week (Starting Tuesday 2 February).
Cross Country Pre-Season – Years 4 to Year 9 Students Welcome
In our 2016 Sport Timetable we have advertised training times for Cross Country as Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday and Friday from 6.45am. However, next week we will run with the following pre-season training
sessions.

come). We will meet outside the College’s Edmund Rice Building (Grassed area near flag poles) at
6.30am and will run the Fig Tree Pocket Trail. This trail run will cater for all students from Year 4 to
Year 9 and all ability levels.

Please meet outside the College’s Edmund Rice Building (Grassed area near flag poles) at 6.45am.
Training will be conducted around the College.
Please Note: Further morning ‘pre-season’ and fitness training sessions will be included and
available to students as we progress through the term.
ATC Cricket Coordinator—Mr Brett Henschell
ATC CRICKET The school cricket season made an early start last week due to a short Term 1 this year. The ATC First X1, Second X1 and Third X1, assembled from boys chosen in 9A, 8A and 7A, played matches against WestMAC and The Armidale School on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, as did 6A on Friday. A total of ten matches were played and ATC was suc-cessful in all ten. Well done boys! A great start to the season.
The remainder of the cohort, plus 6A, played Gregory Terrace on Saturday. ATC performed well against a noted cricketing school and was successful in terms of wins in many matches. A number of narrow losses could have been narrow wins except for some wayward bowling and fielding at crucial times that gifted runs to the opposition. Team training over the next couple of weeks will aim to address this. ATC has the chance to overturn these results come 20 February 2016.
Notable performances were Cam Hunt (67 runs not out and 4 wickets for 15 runs for the First X1 v TAS on Satur-day), Rory Wells (64 runs from 20 deliveries for 6D Blue v GT), Patrick Keyser (32 runs not out for 5A v GT) and Nicho-las Charlton (49 runs from 30 deliveries for 7 Green v GT).
Teams will be named on a weekly basis and distributed by the Year Level Coordinators. Team coaches from each Year level will meet before and after team practice to discuss the previous Saturday’s performance and make changes as deemed necessary. It is our aim to put the best performing X1 on the field week on week and strong performanc-es will be rewarded.
All school cricket fixtures are One Day matches. Many school cricket matches are played in the T20 format or 25 or 30 overs per side. The shorter version matches often make it difficult for every boy to bat and bowl on the day. Team coaches will endeavour to have each boy visit the crease a similar number of times and bowl a similar number of overs during the course of the season. Don’t be concerned if you don’t get to bat one week. You are more than likely to be called upon to bat up the order the following week.
Parents are requested to provide coaches and Year Level Coordinators with as much notice as possible in regard to absences. Obviously, this is not possible with Saturday morning illness but boys can be shifted between teams to ensure maximum participation on match day if absences are known in advance.
Morning skills training commences from Week 2. Team training is compulsory for all boys. A great deal of effort has gone into planning the schedule to minimize/eliminate clashes with other extracurricular activities. Skills training will be conducted 6:45am-8:00am on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. These trainings are optional and open to boys of all Year levels. Boys can choose to attend none, one, two or all three morning skills trainings. No reg-istration is required nor a permanent commitment. A boy can attend one Tuesday morning and not the next or one Wednesday morning and then Thursday morning the following week. Just make sure you attend on the appropriate day eg. don’t come Wednesday morning and ask for keeper skills training.
ATC Cricket Coordinator—Mr Brett Henschell
ATC CRICKET cont.. The Cricket Intensives program, led by Mr Gary Jones, will be conducted 3:15pm-4:45pm Monday afternoons at Jack Bowers Oval. This is an opportunity for boys of all Year groups and standards to gain a little extra cricket coaching during the week. No registration is required nor commitment to attend every Monday. A boy may feel he needs help with his bowling action or forward defence or catching etc. He would be able to go down to the nets on a Monday afternoon and receive some tuition from a qualified HCA coach from 3:15pm. He may be there for 30 minutes, an hour, or the entire period. It does not matter but it is a user pays system and the cost is $20.00. Coach-ing could be in the form of one on one, small group or large group, depending on the number of boys attending and the aspect of their game requiring attention.
Whilst the College will provide ample cricket gear for boys to use at team training and matches, it is strongly rec-ommended that boys have their own batting gloves and protector for hygiene reasons. These items can be pur-chased from any sports or cricket store and I will have stock available for purchase at team training sessions over the next couple of weeks.
Date savers. Whilst the Term 1 cricket draw for boys in Years 5-9 is a fluid document and subject to change, please be advised that Year 6 teams are scheduled to play TSS at Southport on Saturday, 27 February 2016 and Year 5 teams are scheduled to play TSS at Southport on Saturday, 12 March 2016. Confirmation will be given with as much notice as possible.
Good luck to luck to all this Saturday. Have fun!

SWIMMING - camp
27 swimmers returned home from Tallebudgera Recreational Camp where they participated in ATC’s inaugural swim
camp. After swimming 20 kms in 3 days not including the 2 hours of surf swimming and strength training, it was
lucky that the quality of the food at the camp as well as a visit to Sizzler was able to provide the energy required to
keep them going the distance. There was also some time for serious classroom work on the psychology of racing and
goal setting. Everyone had a great time, the swimmers represented our school well and their families should be
proud of the children they have raised. It should be a great start to the swim season for these advanced swimmers.
Last weekend a few of our team competed at the Chandler Sprint Meet with 5 of our swimmers bringing home med-
als and the other 15 competitors finishing within the top 10 of their preferred events. There were 650 competitors
and these results give a great indication of what we can expect in the upcoming Brisbane and Queensland sprint
championships. Best of luck to all involved in these meets. Nominations for Queensland Sprint Championships will
close on Monday 8th February.
CLUB NIGHTS—Our first Club night will be held on Thursday 4th February. Starting at 6.00 pm and open to all ATC students and swimming club members. We look forward to seeing many of you at our first night for this term.
BROTHER MILLER SHIELD - 5th February at Nudgee College—ATC looks forward to an afternoon of compe-tition against a number of GPS schools.
WEST TAYLOR BRIDGE DISTRICT TRIALS - Monday 8th February at St Peter’s College, Indooroopilly. This event is for 10 – 12 year olds. Notice of selection in this team will be sent home next week.
VOLLEYBALL Mr Tim Walker Coordinator Our volleyball program begins on Tuesday 2 February with trials on the ATC courts from 3.00-4.30pm.
In 2016 our program will have two levels. A group of boys will be selected to train and compete in teams in friendly matches against other schools on Thursday afternoons. Boys who are not selected in the competi-tive program will participate in a development program which will involve training on Tuesday afternoons and internal games and skills coaching on Thursday afternoons.
Both the competitive and the development or recreational programs will prepare boys for participation in the Gap High School competition in Term 2 and 4 as well as QLD Volleyball Schools Cup 14-16 October, 2016.
Boys are to change into their HPE uniform and head straight down to the courts after school on Tuesday.
Please contact Mr Tim Walker if you have any queries regarding volleyball.
ATC Aquatics Coordinator—Mr Paul Jones
QUEENSLAND STATE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS
On the first week of the Christmas holidays 14 individual swimmers as well as 14 relay teams competed at
these championships. Queensland is known as the strongest swimming state and these championships
showed that this is indeed the case.
The quality of competition was of an extremely high standard with a number of age group teams visiting
from Asia also competing.
The success of our swimmers was outstanding with a 93 percent success rate in achieving personal best
times.
Special congratulations must go to Daniel Woodrow who won silver in the 100m Freestyle and bronze in
the 200m freestyle finals. These results also qualified Daniel for National titles in Adelaide later this year.
Other congratulations go to Tom Kearney who qualified for the 100 m Breaststroke final where he placed
8th.
