At Barker we have a clear and distinct focus on ensuring that all students have what they need to thrive; to grow, to inspire, to serve, to think critically and to be a learner fully engaged with the world around them. It is at the core of what we do here.

We also believe that participation in team sports, healthy competition and skills development are essential elements in the development of well-balanced young people. A strong sense of sportsmanship and fair play is fostered among the whole School community.

In 2020, the School will open its new Rosewood Centre – a purpose-built sports and learning precinct that will provide us with a facility that takes us deep into the 21st century for generation upon generation.

The Rosewood Centre will be a gathering place where sport, community and learning can all come together.

This is an exciting time to be joining a dynamic and professional team of people at Barker College.

Sport at Barker

At Barker all students are involved in sport and Saturday sport is often the highlight of a student’s week at school, as it brings a healthy balance to their life. Our aim is to provide students with an enjoyable sporting experience, where excellence is pursued and individual potential realised. A strong sense of sportsmanship and fair play is fostered among the whole School community.

We have a fine tradition on the sporting field and Barker has produced many State and National champions, including Captains of National teams. Our school teams are renowned for their dedication and commitment and being selected in a School team is a matter of pride.

The School is blessed with five ovals, 7 tennis courts, an astro-turf playing field and a 25 metre indoor swimming pool.

Most sports offer several levels of interschool competition and students are carefully graded to a team that matches their individual level of skill. In addition students compete in House Competitions including Athletics, Swimming and Cross-Country.

Athletics, Netball, Rugby 7s, Swimming, Rugby, AFL, Football, Cricket, Surf Lifesaving, Fencing, Squash, Tennis, Cross-Country, Basketball, Hockey, Softball and Taekwondo are the main sports played against other schools, although there are many others offered.

Overview of Sport

• Junior School students compete in the IPSHA competition

• Secondary School boys compete in the CAS competition (Committee of the Associated Schools)

• Secondary School girls compete in the Independent Sports’ Association (ISA) Competition and in local district and community sporting competitions

• In 2018, Barker were named CAS Champions in the boys’ 1st Basketball, 1st XV Rugby, 1st XI Football, 1st Cricket Northern District Cup Joint Champions, 1st Squash Grand Finalists and in the Bungan Whale Challenge for Surf Lifesaving.

• Our girls enjoyed similar success with 1st Basketball winning the ISA Championship; 1st Softball won their 22nd Premiership title, Touch Football teams secured 5 Premierships, 2 Premiership titles for our Netball teams and ISA Swimming Senior Champions.

Coaching Program

Coaching at Barker across all of our sports is an area the School takes very seriously. Barker invests heavily in its coaching program with a strong blend of highly experienced and professional coaches, young emerging coaches, past students and of course our teaching staff.

Our coaches are tasked to foster a positive and respectful culture with their team environments whilst always maintaining an inspiring attitude towards their coaching responsibilities on and off the field, court, or pool. Student engagement is paramount and we therefore encourage all coaches to take the lead in enabling openness, building a culture of trust and getting to know each and every student within their own teams, to better understand the unique value and role that a student can play within that team. This will ensure our students are engaged, challenged, developed and hopefully inspired throughout their sporting experience at Barker.

Rosewood Centre – Opening 2020

Located in The Avenue, the Rosewood Centre will provide Barker’s students access to cutting edge recreation and learning spaces.

Incorporating a comprehensive fitness centre, five international standard indoor sports courts, 12 classrooms and learning spaces, the Rosewood Centre will be a place where all Barker students are able to maximise their gifts.
