Pupils

Sadly we said goodbye to our Year 11 pupils moving on to college

in September. They left at the end of June. We wish them

every success in the future.

We will also say goodbye to our 6th form students leaving to go

to college. We will miss you and wish you every success.

A new event was our leavers’ school prom- all those who were

involved had a great evening despite the heat. We remembered

Eclipse who passed away this half term. Her funeral was on the

day of the prom. The florist donated 2 balloons for Eclipse –

they were attached to the speakers throughout the prom and

danced the night away. My thanks to Miss Read and her team

who did an amazing job of creating the perfect event.

I am sure you all enjoyed Hair Spray. I was so proud of the way

our stars performed and behaved throughout the week with an

exhausting 3 performances!! Thanks to Chloe Flannagan and

Hannah McCarthy for leading the team and of course Zoe Kern

and Sarah Fraser for preforming with the pupils.

School development

We have had a very successful consultation period during this

term. Staff, pupils, parents and Governors have had their say

about the future of North Ridge. Please see our website for the

plan.

I would like to thank the staff for their hard work throughout

this year in educating your children. Pupils have worked hard

and achieved great results - particularly our Year 11s and 6th

form in their accredited courses.

Work with Lancasterian School

There have been significant changes in the leadership of

Lancasterian organisation over the last 12 months. A new Head

Teacher starts in September. The leadership team of North

Ridge have been working closely with the new leadership at

Lancasterian to build the capacity of the team. This work will

continue into the autumn term 2018. I am spending two days a

week at Lancasterian. In my absence Mrs Gill Foord continues to

lead the team at North Ridge.

I am very proud to be the Head Teacher of North Ridge and

work with fantastic pupils, staff parents and governors. Our

Ofsted judgement confirmed that we continue to be

outstanding in all areas of our work. We have been assessed by

the “UNICEF Rights Respecting School” team this week. We

look forward to hearing the outcome in September of whether

we have achieved the Gold award. Thank you to Chloe Flannagan

for leading us in preparing for the assessment. This year has

been very successful and I look forward to continuing our

journey in autumn 2018.

REMINDER OF SCHOOL PROCEDURES

We remind parents that parking on the school site at the start

or end of the school day is restricted. Please drive slowly when

approaching school and only park in designated areas. The

reason for this is to ensure that all pedestrians are safe and

reduce traffic during very busy times.

A MEMBER OF THE LEADERSHIP TEAM WILL BE PRESENT

AT THE START AND END OF THE DAY TO GUIDE

TRANSPORT PLEASE CO-OPERATE AT ALL TIMES.

Pupils are required to wear full school uniform. Please ensure

that your child is dressed appropriately when they come to

Class Bonington

This term, Class Bonington have been carrying out work experience

at the ‘Incredible Edible’ allotment project in Heaton Park, the

Heaton Park animal centre and the E-Act academy. Four students

also took part in the Digital Advantage project.

Three students have been helping out at the Heaton

Park animal centre. Their tasks include feeding the

animals, cleaning out the geese and chickens and

changing the dirty straw. They have really enjoyed

spending time in the fresh air and sunshine and

learning how to care for the animals.

Many members of the class have been helping out at the ‘Incredible Edible’

allotment project in Heaton Park. They have been growing fruits, herbs and

vegetables for the local community; learning how to plant seeds and water and

nurture the plants as they grow.

Two students from Class Bonington have

continued to make weekly visits to a

local primary school and run their

Sports Leaders sessions to groups of

nursery aged children. They have

worked hard to come up with games

which are suitable for younger children

and have engaged their creative thinking

as well as their teamwork skills.

Four students from Bonington, in addition to

other students from KS4 and Sixth Form,

recently took part in the Digital Advantage

project. They spent a week immersing themselves

into the world of digital marketing, successfully

developing new skills and collaborating as a team.

They came up the complete concept of a brand

new app starting from just a list of possible ideas.

They created a video explaining how their app

would work, constructed a website and promoted

their idea on several forms of social media. They

will be attending a competition soon with many

other schools so fingers crossed!

In English we have been learning how to write shopping lists. We have been

identifying the different ingredients in various recipes and wrote them down on our

shopping lists .We have then taken these out with us during our weekly shopping trip

to Tesco so we know what to buy.

In maths we have been developing our understanding of money and of

the different coins. We have then been out to visit a variety of shops to

practise purchasing items and using money.

In Class Tenzing this term we have been exploring many

fun and interesting things in our lessons.

In Science we have been learning about mini

beasts and their habitats. We went on a mini

beast hunt and found many creatures living

under rocks and even on the trees!

In Class Tenzing for P.E we have been going cycling.

We love cycling and going around on the tracks on

different bikes. But this time we have been oiling

the wheels, organising the helmets & helping put

the bikes away. This was lots of fun because we all

had different jobs and we helped one another when

we got stuck!

In Grow it we have been planting many different herbs

and vegetables. We planted the seeds in plant pots

containing lots of soil and water. We have been

watering our plants and the tomato plant has grown

huge, touching the ceiling in Class Tenzing! We also

planted potatoes in the allotment. These have also been

growing. We can’t wait to bake them and have them as

jacket potatoes!

The Gallery Café, Pharmacy,G4S and Theatre Stores

Fathiya is working in G4s and has been learning the importance of making sure the

Pharmacy department is cleaned to the correct standard. Fathiya is enjoying working

with her team and learning different cleaning techniques such as high dusting,

changing bin bags and mopping.

Mostafa is currently working in Pharmacy. Mostafa has been learning how to input

returned stock into the robot. Mostafa has various tasks to complete within his

working day and can independently identify which labels need to be on which

medication.

Class Nightingale are enjoying their work experience at North Manchester

General Hospital. This opportunity has given our students an amazing

insight to what it is like working in a busy environment. The student’s in

class Nightingale enjoy a variety of roles working in different departments

across the hospital. These include;

Bailey is working hard in the Theatre stores. Bailey has a variety of duties including making

sure all stock is stored in the correct area. Bailey will move stock using a cage to transport

the stock and he will make sure the equipment is stored correctly and efficiently.

Jordan has been enjoying her work experience in the Gallery Café. Jordan has a range of

duties including making sure all the tables and chairs are cleaned to a good standard, filling up

the cutlery, making sure the coffee cups are replenished and restocking the crisp shelves.

All Class Nightingale students have been working incredibly hard and are valued members of

the North Manchester General Hospital team.

I would like to say a big thank you to Class Nightingale for all their hard work and dedication.

I would also like to take this opportunity to say good bye and good luck to Bailey, Mostafa,

Our topic over the summer term in

English has been ‘Detectives’.

We came across a suspicious crime

scene in NRHS and have since been

very busy gathering evidence, planning

and writing incident reports.

This term on our vocational day we have

been cooking. We have learnt how to

make healthy snacks and meals.

So far we have made banana bread,

quorn chilli, vegetable curry and

vegetable pizza.

We have really enjoyed learning new

skills and recipes.

We hope you all have a lovely summer holiday and look forward to seeing you

again in the new school year!

In June pupils from class Ross, Mallory, Tenzing and Baker went for a sensory Tudor

morning at Ordsall Hall in Salford. We made Tudor soap balls and scent bags, explored the

Tudor herb garden and ground some spices in the kitchen. We also tried on lots of Tudor

clothing and some of us had our picture taken in the stocks! It was a fantastic morning; all

the pupils engaged in the activities and had a fantastic time. Staff were very proud of all

the pupils. Thank you to parents who came to support.

This term students from all of our 6th form

classes have been working at North

Manchester general hospital. The have been

visiting wards with the snack trolley and

handing out newspapers to patients.

The students continue to grow and master

new skills while doing work experience. They

have all been working very hard and

providing a very much appreciated service

to the staff and patients at the hospital.

We also have students volunteering with

Macmillan Cancer support each week and

help with preparing their information packs

and event/advertising materials. The

students have enjoyed going and are pleased

that it is helping people that may be unwell.

Students continue to contribute to

the community with work experience

at Blackley Cemetery. Students have

been attending each week to paint

benches and do litter picking to help

make it a pleasant place to visit for

all.

What a busy summer we have had! Business is booming, and our students have worked so

hard to keep up with the demands of the shop.

We have been working on various projects throughout the school year:

This year the students’ trialled making gifts for Eid and these proved to be very

popular with our customers.

All of our Easter Bonnet kits sold out in record time. Students loved putting

together these kits and seeing the finished products entered into the annual

competition.

Our students have already started to design and produce our range of Christmas

products due to last year’s overwhelming demand.

We will be offering a prom dress and suit rental service starting next year. Our

students are already sourcing suitable evening wear for next year’s leavers.

Our biggest achievement, as always, is giving our students the opportunity to develop their

confidence and self-esteem whilst working in a real life retail environment.

A valuable part of working in the shop involves the use of functional maths skills whilst

serving the customers on the till.

Our students provide a very valuable service to the local community and we are very proud of

what they have achieved.

We wish you all a wonderful summer full of sunshine and fun and we hope you visit us at the

shop very soon!

Very best wishes from all the students and staff at 2nd Hand Made.

Thanks to the efforts of our Café students, the

last year has been very successful. We are

continuing to develop the café and ensure that we

remain an essential community hub.

A special thanks go to our café students who leave

this year to start on their chosen pathways,

including Bridge College and Class Nightingale. You

will be missed greatly.

This year we were invited to cater for the first annual

North Ridge Prom! Students produced a selection of

sandwiches and light bites as well as an assortment of

cakes. All of the guests were thoroughly impressed and

it’s safe to say that everyone is now hooked on the Cup

and Cake brownies!

All of our students have gained a thorough

understanding of working in a real life working

environment. Students have developed a range of

Life Skills, including literacy, numeracy,

communication and health & safety/ food safety.

As students have settled into the café

environment their confidence has been at an all-

time high.

It has been a privilege to watch our students improve their skills and also to

see their self-confidence and esteem improve so much.

This term in Class Fiennes we have been

learning about Indian Art in our Art

lessons. We have looked at different types

of Indian Art and particularly explored

the Indian Elephant festival. Students in

Class Fiennes made their own elephants

which they covered with lots of different

patterns, colours and material before

participating in their own elephant parade

where we voted for their favourite. We

have also looked at different Mehndi

patterns that we have tried to recreate

before using these patterns to create

printing blocks. All of Class Fiennes’ work

has recently been featured in our school

art exhibition.

Class Fiennes wish everyone a happy and safe summer holidays.

Indian Art

In art, Class Flinders have been working on Indian style

patterns. We used repeating circle and symmetrical

patterns to design and paint our back grounds. We

carved intricate designs into potatoes and used them to

stamp detailed patterns onto our backgrounds.

Dulce et Decorum Est

I saw the soldiers with blood-shod feet,

Blood-shod, dark red and dripping.

I can hear loud gas shells,

Dropping softly.

I smell the sludge,

Dirty and disgusting.

I feel fatigue, I didn't have chance to rest,

My eyes feel heavy.

I can taste smoke, I can’t breathe,

It’s burning my tongue.

- Written by a student

Class Flinders have been

working very hard in

English to create poems

based on life during the

First World War. We

used our senses to help us

describe what life in the

trenches was like.

getting to know the dogs

and enjoyed getting out

and about!

We have learned how to write diaries in English and have written all about

our weekends and what we enjoy doing. We have also worked on writing our

own rhyming poems. We have had lots of creative ideas!

Head Teacher Bernice Kostick / Deputy Head Teacher Gill Foord

25

During MFL, we have learned all

about French café. As well as

asking for different types of

food and drink, we have worked

on our money skills.

We have done some impressive art work

this term when learning about landscapes.

We have recreated Claude Monet’s

‘Bridge over the Lily Pond’ and ‘Magpie’

and also painted seascapes inspired by

his work.

As part of key stage 3’s

healthy eating project we

enjoyed cooking with our

parents. Our quorn spaghetti

bolognese and fruit kebabs

were delicious!

Thank you to those parents

who attended and made it a

huge success.

writing.

We have been cycling on Wednesday afternoons at Boggart Hole Clough. Pupils have

really enjoyed this experience. They have worked on developing their independence

skills and have all been able to choose different bikes and cycle around the track.

Behaviour was excellent and staff in class are very proud of the pupils.

Pupils in Class Ross have had a fantastic year and staff

are very proud of them!

On behalf of all the students and staff in Class Ross, we

This term students from

class Bell have been helping

to raise money by cleaning

cars and selling cakes at

break time to students.

As part of their ASDAN

accreditation students had

to choose their own

activities to participate in

and complete 10 hours of

volunteering.

Students worked really hard

to make their cakes and made

the cars sparkle in the

amazing Manchester summer!

Head Teacher Bernice Kostick / Deputy Head Teacher Gill Foord

29

This term, we have been using our French

vocabulary to order a drink and fruit in a cafe

scene. We really enjoyed role playing this!

Mr Jones even brought in slugs for us!

In science we have been

learning about mini-

beasts. We have been

digging in the soil to find

lots of wiggly worms. We

found this very funny.

We have all had a fantastic year in

MacArthur. We wish everyone a great

summer term break!

This term in maths we have been learning about how to budget. They

tasted similar food items from a supermarket’s value range and the

similar branded item. They compared the quality, smell and taste to

decide which was the more expensive branded item.

They tasted orange juice, crisps, chocolate and biscuits. Class Peake

then calculated how much money they could save on their shopping bill

by swapping branded items for the value range.

This term in Grow it, Class Peake made a refreshing drink of mint tea.

They picked the mint leaves and washed them. Our teacher helped us to

pour the hot water into the jug. We then stirred the tea to release the

minty flavour. We added honey to make it taste sweeter.

31

Class Baker have had a

lovely term! We have

worked very hard in all

subjects but our

favourites have been

Cooking, History and

Geography.

For History this term

we learnt about the

Tudors and visited

Ordsall Hall with the

rest of the department.

For Geography we have been learning all about tourism. We dressed up in summer clothes

and recreated a beach in class, we separated photographs identifying tourist places and

everyday normal places for us and finally we went on a class trip to Heaton Park and

pretended to be tourists. Using an iPad to document our day we created a photobook!

In Cooking we have been making healthy meals, our

favourite was pastry free quiche so we worked on this

the most. We enjoyed trying our food after we had

cooked it!

Class Baker have had an excellent year! We hope you

enjoy your summer!

Sun

This term, in English, we have been learning all about detectives. We have learnt about

what a detective is and what they do. We came across our very own crime scene in

which we had to decode clues so that we could find the culprit! We have had to give

witness statements and write up newspaper articles about the crime incident.

In Science, we have been looking at Acids and Alkalis. We have taken part in lots of

different experiments to explore and identify items that are acids/alkalis. We also put

our science skills to the test to find out what things were polluting our water samples.

Did you know …

Attendance percentage Number of absences

within the academic year

100% attendance 0 days absence

99% attendance 1 days absence

98% attendance 3 days absence

97% attendance 1 week absence

95% attendance 2 weeks absence

92% attendance 3 weeks absence

90% attendance 3.5 weeks absence

Arriving to school late will also affect overall attendance.

Top Tips …

Help your child pack their school bag the night before.

Help your child put out their school uniform the night before.

Put your child to bed at a reasonable time to help them have a good

night’s sleep.

Set your child’s alarm early enough to allow enough time for them to

get ready.

Give your child a time-scale to get ready in. This could be done as a

fun game. A visual timer would be useful for this.
