HEAD TEACHER MESSAGE

Dear Parent/Carer

Many, many thanks for the continued support you give to our school.

We welcome the inspection of the school which will take place this week. We are pleased to have the opportunity to show all that is good about this school, including the support of parents, and to learn from advice that the Inspec-tion Team, will give to us in our quest to continue to improve.

Our results for last session were very positive with significant increase in performance at National 3, National 4 and National 5. In particular, the number of pupils gaining 5 or more National 5 awards has increased over 20% in the last 2 years. Our S5 results have maintained the improvements of the last few years with an increase in the *** of subjects we offer in school, partner schools and colleges. I would like to thank our parents for the support they have given to pupils in making this possible and to recognise the great efforts that staff make in supporting pupils.

We are delighted to be able to show you examples of the work our young people have done with the review of our values in Cardinal Newman High School. This work was driven by our Pupil Council who are to be commended for this work last year in 2015/16 with fellow pupils, parents and staff. Watch this space as a final consultation begins this term.

You will no doubt be aware that we have been working very hard with colleagues, pupils and the Parent Council to improve the fabric of the building and the facilities in school for pupils. It was recently announced that North Lan-arkshire Council will invest over £2 million in upgrading the school. I am delighted that preparations we have made are coming to fruition and we are very appreciative of the support from North Lanarkshire Council. The upgrade will begin with a new sports multipurpose (all weather facility) a full refurbishment of the Art and Design Department, and the installation of a dance studio and fitness suite. In addition, the school building will undergo a full electrical rewire.

The new traffic management system is now in place and I would like to thank all parents who have supported this change. Cardinal Newman High School is now a safer place for pupils, parents and staff. I would appeal to those parents who are still dropping off their son/daughter in the school car park to use the drop off area beside the play-ing surface of the Matt Busby Centre.

Please continue to use our school website and Twitter feed for more information on all activities in our school. Many thanks to our followers of Twitter which now exceeds 1500.

Yours sincerely

The Pupil Council have had an exceptionally busy and productive few months.

In the summer term, they undertook the exciting task of consulting the school community on our vision and values. They devised, administered and collated the responses to an extensive consultation of pu-pils, staff and parents. This included creating a homework task for our new S1 as part of their visit in May, as well as an impressive presentation to our Parent Council. These newly agreed values will be un-veiled next week, with the Pupil Council canvassing opinion on how our pupils would like to see them displayed throughout the school.

Last week, five Pupil Councillors were the voice of CNHS at a Young Scot event in Glasgow where they discussed environmental issues. The opinions and concerns they raised will be shared with the Scottish government to inform policy in this area.

At our most recent meeting, members nominated, voted and elected their peers to office for the coming session. The position of Chairperson will be held by Ethan Cheung with Vice Chair held by Jack Murphy. Secretaries will be Louisa McCearney and Joseph Staitis. Publicists will be Eve Patton, Roisin Finnon and Caitlin Donnelly. All are very much looking forward to working hard to ensure a strong pupil voice in the year ahead.

Wider Achievement - Mrs Fagan

This group focuses on the wider achievement opportunities available to all our young people. We meet every few weeks and would invite any parents with an interest in contributing to this important element of school life to join us.

Shotts Prison Visit On Wednesday 5 October 2016 a group of S4 pupils visited HMP Shotts Prison as part of their N5 Modern Studies Crime and the Law topic. The pupils gained a fabulous insight into prison life and the daily routines of a prisoner. After being processed through security the party were escorted to the board room where they were welcomed by the Governor.

After an informative presentation from two of the prison officers, Ian and Jane, the group had a unique opportunity to take part in a Q&A with a prisoner. The pupils enjoyed their visit and were all in agreement that it was a very memorable experience. A second group of pupils are due to visit the prison in December.

The Prison Officers were full of praise for the group and were most complimentary on the quality and number of questions the pupils asked. The 27 pupils represented the school perfectly, they were prepared engaged, confident and respectful.

Holocaust Survivors Visit On Monday 10 October, two Holocaust Survivors, Henry and Ingrid Wuga are coming to Cardinal Newman High School to share their experience of living in Nazi Germany. Senior pupils will get the chance to talk to them and view artefacts from Nazi Germany. This is a fantastic opportunity for the pupils and it will help them with their National 5 and Higher coursework.

Staff and pupils turned out on Sunday 18th September to run round Strathclyde Park in aid of St Andrew’s Hospice. The weather was perfect for those trying to beat their per-sonal bests in a 6K race. Well done to all who took part.

CNHS were delighted to hand over a cheque for £2,590 raised solely by the hard work of Jack Moxen of Kentigern House. Jack spent much of the summer selling home made cakes from outside his house although the weather certainly wasn’t always in his favour.

The Monumentals 14 S3 pupils have accompanied Mr Crawford and Ms Gallagher of the Social Studies Faculty on a mini-tour of Scotland to document some of the country's most famous war monuments. In collaboration with schools in France, Holland and Germany, the pupils are helping to create an online e-Magazine that will showcase First and Second World War memorials in each of these countries and, all being well, we will meet up with these schools at some point at the end of the school year. So far the pupils have given up their precious Saturdays to visit Glasgow, Stirling, Perth and Edinburgh with visits to Aberdeen and Inverness still to come.

On Monday September 19 at Motherwell Cathedral, twenty of our S6 pupils joined their peers from across the Diocese to participate in the Caritas Award Commissioning Mass. Bishop Toal lead the celebrations and blessed the Caritas Award badges before they were presented to the candidates. The Caritas Community gathered thereafter for refreshments in St Brides Hall. Three of our pupils had roles in the liturgy, with wonderful singing and reading from Lucy, Anne Clare and Niamh.

Repeatedly, the Scriptures remind us that even the

strongest faith is of no use without works of love. In

Lk. 6:38, the scripture says, “The measure we use for

others is the measure God will use for us,” and He will

indeed “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those

who trespass against us”,

Matt. 6:12-14.

We have had a variety of activities throughout August to October, 2016. As Pope Francis has declared this

year as “The Year of Mercy”, Holy Mass was organised in Motherwell Diocese for all the Catholic Schools on

26th August, 2016 at Our Lady of Lourdes, Carfin Grotto. Cardinal Newman High School was represented by

one of the Deputy Head Teachers, staff, pupils and the school chaplains. The chief celebrant was Bishop

Joseph Toal, who gave a beautiful homily focusing on the love and the mercy of God. He encouraged the

young people to imitate Jesus Christ to forgive their brothers and sisters, so as to receive forgiveness from

God and to be engaged with the works of love. The Holy Mass was concelebrated by some of the priests in

the Diocese, and about four thousand school pupils were in attendance.

On Monday 5th September, 2016, the school chaplain, Fr. Thomas, assisted by Deacon Mario celebrated a

welcome Mass in the theatre for the First Year Pupils, their family members and friends at 7:00pm. The

Mass began with a Candle Lit Procession. On reaching the Altar, the pupils all made a commitment by pray-

ing the prayer Our Lord Jesus Christ taught us, “the Our Father”. After that Fr. Thomas prayed over them

and blessed them with Holy Water. Deacon Mario gave a beautiful homily encouraging the young people to

persevere and to be committed to their social, spiritual and academic work. The school choir sang beauti-

fully throughout the mass—thank you.

On Thursday 6th October, 2016, Bishop Joseph Toal, assisted by four priests and Deacon Mario celebrated

Holy Mass for the Feast of Cardinal Newman and the Silver Jubilee of Fr. Thomas K. Wilberforce CSSp. There

was a Religious Profession in the Sports Hall at 2:30pm with about three quarters of the school population

in attendance. The singing was superbly led by the outstanding school choir. At the end of the Mass, the

Head Teacher, Mr. Kenny Ross gave a beautiful speech thanking the Bishop, the Jubilarian and the entire

school for their hard work and commitment. One of the pupils also gave an inspiring speech about Fr.

Thomas, the Jubilarian, and presented the Bishop and Fr. Thomas with the gifts made by Caritas Ambassa-

dors of the school. The Patronal Mass ended with light refreshment.

S2: County sports Silver medallist—

what an achievement—well done for

Twelve of our talented pupils were swimming in a competition in Sheffield at the weekend. The CNHS contingency won a total of 30 medals – well done. The pupils also had the opportunity to swim with, and get advice from, Olympic medalist Ross Murdoch.

Well done to Michael McGraw in our S5 who won 2 medals at the recent Scottish Championship Tai Kwon Do competi-tion in Ravenscraig Regional Sports facility. The Gold was for winning 5 out of 5 solo fights and the Silver as part of a tag team winning 4 out of 5. Excellent achievement.

Senior team S4-S6.

This week sees our senior girls start their defence of their North Lanarkshire Schools title. Each round of this competition will take place at St. Andrew's High School, culminating in the final at Broadwood Stadium. Good luck girls.

This year our girls team is also entered in to the Scottish Shield. Our first game is a home fixture against Cumbernauld Academy on Thursday 27th October. All parents and friends are welcome to attend and support the girls at the start of hopefully a long run in the competition.

This year we have a new squad of girls playing football, S1-S3. Such is the popularity and success of

our senior team last year the enthusiasm and motivation from these younger pupils is great to see.

Good luck this year girls.

Cardinal Newman High School

As an enhanced comprehen-sive school, we use the theme of enterprise to raise achieve-ment, build the self-confidence of pupils and en-hance teaching and learning in all areas. We use our status as an NLC enhanced comprehen-sive to improve facilities, wid-en pupil choice and introduce vocational courses, buy addi-tional equipment and fund additional staff. These reports highlight the ways in which our work as a school commu-nity of teachers, pupils and parents impact on the achievements of all pupils, all departments and our partner agencies. Both reports com-ment:
