More than 50 years ago...

In 1958, a group of local businesswomen recognized the need for a supportive center for girls. That year, the first girls club in Northern California opened its doors.

Today

Why Girls?A girl’s future participation in the workforce is

directly related to their K-12 academic success. At least 80% of our students (100% of 2009 – 2010 Seniors) enroll in two- or four-year colleges—many of whom are the first in their families to attend an institute of higher learning; 50% of their peers won’t even graduate from high school.“A nation’s competitiveness depends significantly on whether and how it educates and utilizes its female talent,” according to Dr. Laura D. Tyson, professor of business administration and economics at UC Berkeley and co-author of the 2009 World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Report.

Unique Challenges

As the leading expert on girls, we’re acutely aware of their unique challenges

and pressures.

• 2/3+ are from households earning less than $40K/year• 40% are from single-parent families, headed by women• Communities face high crime, teen pregnancy, STD, domestic violence, child abuse and school drop-out rates.

Strong Girl“In 1st grade, learning to read was really important; by 4th grade we were excited to learn about human anatomy. In junior high, we focused on technology. Now I’m in high school and am preparing for college and learning about careers that interest me!”Katarina is one of the first to benefit from the full continuum of services, which evolve with girls’ developmental needs.

Page 14: Header

Smart Family

Our family “read nights” engage parents and kids in a shared activity and mutual-learning. The importance of reading is reinforced and many non-English speaking families are able to practice both languages together.

“When we went home after the read night, my child asked to read another book together!”

Page 15: Header

Bold Community

“Girls Inc. provides a lens to think about why this is

happening. It challenges them to ask questions about

their environment."

“Whenever you engage a young person in a positive task there is value you can calculate because they are not on welfare – that’s money saved; they are not taking the remedial class at a Community College –money saved; and they are not incarcerated. They will be employed and adding value to society. Theywill do community work and adding something.”
