Goals of the Lesson:
Cognitive: The students will be able to describe infectious organisms and the responses common to diseases. They will also be able to analyze and define the manifestations of diseases, and use terminology pertaining to diseases.Motor: The student will be able to recognize word parts that are specific to disease.Affective: The student will recognize that even though there are different organ systems, the word elements are similar and used in multiple systems; they will be able to understand the meaning of many disease processes.

1. Prepare flash cards listing various diseases and disorders so that each category has approximately 5-6 diseases or disorders. Divide the class into small groups and randomly distribute the flash cards, instructing each group to determine which category each belongs. Draw 7 columns on the board and ask for a volunteer from each group to place their terms in the correct category. Allow the students to use a dictionary to verify their answers.MaterialsApproximately 35-42 flash cards with various diseases and disorders listed separately; Stedman’s Medical Dictionary for the Health Professions and Nursing, Illustrated, 6th ed. (2008), one per small group.
2. Divide the class into 7 groups. Assign each group a different category to research and share with the rest of the class, their findings.
