December’s Coffee & Commerce was all about growing Southeast Ohio by the addition of the MAGNAM Research Park.

Dr. Paul Brown and Pam Jira informed Chamber members about the proposed 2,500 acre business park in which world-class businesses, leading research universities, and knowledge workers will connect, innovate, and commercialize energy resources.

The park is a 20 year development project near I-70 & I-77, and has the potential for creating 10,000 high paying jobs and $2.6 billion annually.

Mike Chadsey from OOGA attended the meeting and offered assurance that the energy future for SE Ohio is solid and long term for this project.

ANNOUNCING THE BWC HEALTH AND WELLNESS PROGRAM AT NO FEE TO THE EMPLOYER OR EMPLOYEES!

BWC’S SCOTT ST. CLAIR The Bureau of Worker’s Compensation’s mission is to protect Ohio’s workers and employers through prevention,

care and management of work-place injuries and illnesses at fair rates. Having a healthy workforce gives employers the ability to focus on their businesses and manage their workers compensation and health-care costs.

While all Ohioans could benefit from this initiative, BWC will focus initially on a smaller participant group and based on feedback – expand the program. BWC will offer program funding on a first come, first serve basis to Ohio’s workforce and injured workers whose employers do not have such a program. The BWC is offering a Wellness program for employers with 50 employees or less in the following industries:

Agriculture; Automotive Repair and Service; Construction; Firefighters; Healthcare; Manufacturing; Police and Public Safety; Public Employers; Restaurant and Food Service; Transportation and Trucking; Trash Collection Wholesale and Retail.

The BWC will invite the injured worker to participate after consulting with their employer and managed care organization. Additional eligibility criteria could include co-morbid conditions; injury diagnosis, occupation and industry; time away from work.

Join us on February 1st and learn how this BWC funded Wellness program can help your business and your employees with health and wellness awareness, health risk assessments, personalized health coaching, nurse advice, lifestyle management programs, and disease management programs. A NEW YEAR – A NEW YOU!Wade Bistor, Safety Council

As we begin the 2018 calendar year we engage in the time honored tradition of New Year’s Resolutions. Whether we want to save money, exercise more, lose weight, or kick a smoking habit, we are able to relate all these things to health and safety. A healthy safe work environment allows our employees the opportunity to grow and flourish while saving the company money.

Safety can be your best friend or biggest enemy. Let’s assume a minor accident occurs and the employer is hit with a $2,000 bill. There are indirect costs involved that can quadruple that initial figure. Now you are looking at total costs of $10,000 for one very minor incident that happen to some companies on a regular basis. Some of these indirect costs can include having to train somebody new to work in an area, lost production from a key employee missing time, or overtime paid to catch up production lost. Now if you look at a company that makes 10 percent profit, they will need to sell $100,000 additional dollars of goods or services to recoup that money lost. Feel free to use these same figures and plug in some of the injuries your company has had recently. I assure you that the results will alarm you.

Now this injured employee from the previous example could be out for some period of time and will really have trouble exercising more and losing the weight they set out to accomplish. Beyond the obvious cost for a lack of safety like injuries and OSHA citations (which are growing), employees can easily relate the safety culture to the culture of a plant or business as a whole. When employers truly care about their employees often have strong safety programs. An employee that feels valued at their workplace typically carries less stress with them and may have an easier time kicking their smoking habit. Now that we have looked into everything we can to keep our employees on track to their personal goals, let’s start setting business goals geared toward safety.

My New Year’s Resolution is to Grow my company’s safety program through involvement by regular audits and to improve employee participation.

I challenge every safety professional to set themselves a safety resolution for the New Year and to stick with it longer than the 80% that fail by February. Make these goals SMART goals as we lead our employees to a safe 2018.

January 24th - Safety Council Topic will be “How to build and sustain a safety culture” This will be a panel discussion from members of the Safety Council

February 28th – Sitting: Hazardous for Your HealthMarch 28th – Awards Banquet LuncheonAnd this is Jo Sexton’s note – although not a Safety Council meeting,

the February 1st Coffee & Commerce meeting is worth attending! It will be about the new BWC Wellness program being offered at no cost to the employer or the employee! Read about it on page 5 of this newsletter!
