Continental Mapping Consultants Opens Oregon OfficeContinental Mapping Consultants is pleased to announce the opening of a branch office in Portland, Oregon, run by veteran photogrammetrist Chris Aldridge. An ASPRS Certified Photogrammetrist, Mr. Aldridge brings to Continental Mapping a deep technical background gained from 24 years in the profession, with extensive experience in project management and all technical aspects of photogrammetry. His technical experience includes 12 years of service on the American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) board, as well as involvement with the Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon. Mr. Aldridge is also an Oregon Registered Professional Photogrammetrist.

“I am excited to join the Continental Mapping Team, whose strong

professionalism and great reputation reflect what a photogrammetric mapping company should be. The Northwest will benefit from the addition of Continental Mapping into the economy, and I look forward to providing all of my private and public clients with the high level of service that they deserve,” Mr. Aldridge stated.

Mr. Aldridge and his family have lived in Portland since 1992, when he joined Spencer B. Gross, Inc. (SBG). In 1994, he was tasked with developing the digital orthophotography department at SBG and was instrumental in the transition from optical analytical to softcopy stereo photogrammetry. In 1998, he took over as the operations manager of SBG and oversaw all aspects of photogrammetric production. In 2004, he was named Vice President and General Manager, and he remained in that role until the SBG unit was sold to i-TEN Associates in 2008.

Mr. Aldridge will play an important role for Continental Mapping’s new and existing clients from the Pacific Northwest. As Continental Mapping prepares to celebrate our 10th year

in business, this addition will offer a more personal level of service to our Northwestern clients, and it expands our capacity and ability to all our clients. Continental Mapping has earned a reputation as a strong technical mapping problem solver, and adding Mr. Aldridge to our ranks strengthens this standing.

Founded in 1999, Continental Mapping is based in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, near Madison, with an office in Plainfield, Indiana, near Indianapolis.

Very High Accuracy Mapping for Engineering Design Using Helicopter and Fixed Wing SolutionsTo support our engineering clients with very high accuracy mapping needs, Continental Mapping has developed specialized photogrammetric techniques utilizing imagery captured at low altitudes from helicopter and fixed wing platforms. These unique acquisition techniques, coupled with precision airborne GPS (ABGPS), provide solutions that yield vertical mapping accuracies of 0.1 feet or better.

Railroad CorridorPatrick Engineering, Inc. recently engaged Continental Mapping to perform aerial mapping along 13 miles of a busy railroad corridor in the south suburbs of Chicago, Illinois. Using stereo imagery captured by a low-flying fixed wing aircraft and ground control survey set by Patrick Engineering land surveyors, Continental Mapping’s photogrammetrists were able to map features along the corridor with vertical accuracies of +/- 0.1 feet on hard surfaces. Patrick Engineering Project Manager Scott Lutz stated that “the mapping requirements were to obtain surface terrain information that would near the accuracy of having a survey field crew perform the work themselves. However, due to the extents of the project

and the complications of accessibility, it was more cost effective to have this acquired with aerial mapping.”

Patrick Engineering saw several other benefits to Continental Mapping’s aerial mapping solution. The mapping limits were extended to 25 feet beyond the corridor’s boundaries to aid in the design process by letting Patrick Engineering see what was next to the project area. A 3-inch resolution orthophoto was delivered to assist the engineers in identifying the types

of signs, signals, and electric boxes along the corridor. Additionally, 3D graphical triangles representing the DTM model were delivered to Patrick and were then converted into a TIN model for use in GEOPAK software. The engineers used GEOPAK to create alignments of the rail as well as cross sections for design purposes.

Interstate CorridorContinental Mapping also recently provided very high accuracy mapping services in support of interstate design work. For an engineering firm specializing in transportation design, Continental Mapping had four line miles of existing interstate corridor flown by a helicopter equipped with a mapping camera. Using photogrammetric methods, mapping at a 1"=10' scale with a vertical accuracy of +/- 0.05' was delivered. In addition to aiding in design, the mapping is being used to calculate the volume of road surface materials that need to be removed and for estimating the amount of materials needed to replace the road surface, just one of the many novel applications to which such detailed mapping can be applied.

For yet another transportation engineering client, 55 line miles of a proposed interstate corridor were mapped using imagery taken from a fixed wing aircraft. In areas with hard surfaces, +/- 0.1' accuracies were

verifiably achieved. Compiled from more than 1,800 frames, planimetric mapping at a 1"=20' scale and 3" pixel resolution orthophotos were delivered to the client in addition the topographic DTM. This project was completed in less than three months.

The mapping for the rail corridor had a verified vertical accuracy of 0.1'.

This high resolution image, acquired by helicopter, is detailed enough to read street signs.

Welcome New Employee!James “Chip” CampbellJoining us in September as a photogrammetrist in our Indiana office, Mr. Campbell was formerly the lead photogrammetrist at the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Aerial Engineering Department. Before that, Mr. Campbell worked at Aerial Mapping Company of Arizona. He has more than 10 years of experience with stereocompilation, cartography, client management, and project scheduling, and is a specialist in aerial triangulation and orthophoto production. We are excited to add Mr. Campbell’s unique background to our experienced Indiana staff.

Continental Mapping Consultants Part of History-Making Border Mapping Team

Continental Mapping is pleased to be a part of a team led by 3001, Inc., a Northrup Grumman Company, to

provide aerial data over the U.S./Canada and U.S./Mexico borders for the NGA award to support the Department of Homeland Security. The official 3001 press release follows:

August 12, 2008 - Fairfax, VA - 3001, Inc. today announced an award by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) to support the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office of Customs and Border Protection (CPB) for the collection of aerial data over the U.S./Canada and Mexico borders. For the vast expanse of this project, 3001 as prime contractor has assembled a large team of aerial data collection companies. The 3001 Team will use their combined fleet of fifteen airborne sensors, including the Leica Airborne Digital Sensor and the Zeiss/Intergraph Digital Mapping Camera (DMC) for digital aerial data collection.

“We are pleased to be working with the best geospatial

firms in the industry,” offered Bart Bailey, 3001 CEO. “Not only is this the largest aerial data collection team in the history of the geospatial industry, many of these firms are our long-time partners and leaders in their particular field. Our combined resources and experience will enable us to provide high quality data in an efficient and timely manner to NGA.”

3001 will supplement their large fleet of aircraft, sensors, and processing capacity with support from teammates, BAE Systems, Bohannan-Huston Inc., Continental Mapping Consultants, Fugro EarthData, MJ Harden - A GeoEye Company, Intergraph Services Corporation (ISC), Photo Science, and Woolpert, Inc. “We are very proud NGA selected 3001 and our team for this project,” said Andy Dougherty, Vice President of Business Development for 3001.

3001 has experience bringing strong teams of geospatial firms together for large state and federal contracts. In addition to this new contract, 3001 is also one of six prime contractors providing geospatial services for the NGA’s Global Geospatial Intelligence (GGI) program. They are also a prime contractor to the U.S. Navy, Naval Facilities Engineering Command Atlantic Area (NAVFAC) and are currently under contract to six U. S. Army Corps of Engineers districts.
