Election of Parent Governors: Nominations There are two vacancies for Parent Governors to serve on the Board of Governors of Ilkley Grammar School. We are very keen to encourage parents or people with parental responsibility of registered students to nominate themselves to fill these places. Details of what you will need to do to be nominated are provided below. Parent Governors are elected by other parents and are vital to our Board of Governors. They share equally with other Governors the responsibility for carrying out the Board’s wide range of responsibilities. Governors do not run the school day to day, as their role is at the strategic or policy-making level in the school.
You do not have to be an expert on education to be a school Governor and we value the experience that all Governors bring to the role. If you join our Board of Governors, you will serve for a four-year term and you can continue to the end of the four years even if your child/children leave the school. Being a Governor does take up time. There are a minimum of six Board of Governors meetings each year. For Governors who are part of the Resources committee, they also meet 4 times a year. You will need to set aside time to be able to be an effective Governor: time to prepare for meetings, for visiting the school to undertake link visits as well as undertaking and updating training.
If you are interested in standing, or would like to find out what being a Governor is like at this school, please contact our Clerk to the Governors either by telephoning the school or via e-mail [email protected]. The closing date for declaring an interest in becoming a Governor is 23rd October 2015. If it is necessary for there to be an election, I will contact you to let you know about the arrangements.
Mrs Lindsey Wharmby, Chair of Governors Ilkley Grammar School
Who can be a Parent Governor?
All those who have parental responsibility and are over the age of 18 are eligible to stand for election.
There are some circumstances that disqualify an individual from serving as a school Governor .If you wish to stand, you will be asked to complete a self-declaration of eligibility form to state that there are no reasons for being disqualified from serving as a Governor and provide evidence of identity and address if required.
There is also a restriction for Academies that individuals who have an association with a Local Authority (LA) cannot exceed 19.9% of the Board. A person is associated with a local authority if they are:-
A current member of a LA (elected councillor) A previous member (within the preceding 4 years) of the LA An employee of a company under the control of a LA
If you have an association with a ‘local authority’, please speak to our Clerk to Governors prior to making an application. Parents who receive remuneration from the school are disqualified from elections or appointment as a
Parent Governor.
Process for Nomination If you are interested in becoming a Governor, please contact our Clerk to the Governors. A meeting with another Governor will then be arranged to discuss the role and expectations of a Governor at Ilkley Grammar School. You will then complete a nomination form, which must be supported by a parent of a student currently at the school (not including anyone to whom you are closely related). If the number of parents standing for election is equal to or less than the number of places available, they will automatically become a Parent Governor. If there are more nominations than vacancies, an election will take place, statements of all candidates will be circulated to all parents and a ballot held.

Staffing Update This half term we have welcomed new members of staff to our team: Joe Edwards has joined the PE Department as their Technician. Joe joins us from the Wakefield School
Sports Network where he was a sports coach. Joanne Hilton-Mitchell joined us from Wetherby as our Learning Support Assistant with a Focus on
Technical (Vocational) Learning. She has previously worked as a Learning Support Practitioner. Raquel Madrid Lopez has joined the MFL team as their Foreign Language Assistant replacing Vero
Pallares Cuartielles. We wish Fiona Verity (English) good luck as she heads off on maternity leave at the start of half term
and we are delighted to welcome Ghaziyah Weller as our maternity cover in the English Team.
Considerate Parking If you are attending a parents’ meeting or other event at school could you please ensure you park considerately and that you respect local residents. We have received complaints from our neighbours following our recent events where visitors to IGS have blocked drives and pavements on our surrounding and neighbouring streets.
Tuesday 20th October B Hall, 6.30–8pm The evening will focus on eSafety, the safe use of iPads and understanding the Home School Agreement and is an opportunity for parents to increase awareness on eSafety issues and how we support students to be responsible users of the internet at IGS...everyone is welcome!

Good point made.
We have really high expectations of our student’s school work at IGS and our marking guide provides a framework to help them improve and do their Personal Best. We expect their written work to follow these basic rules:
· Always have an underlined title and the date. · Use a blue or black pen. · Pencil and ruler are used for tables, graphs and diagrams. · Questions are answered in full sentences unless the teacher specifically tells you not to do so. · Marking is read through and all corrections are made, using your green pen. · Spelling mistakes are corrected using your green pen and practised in the back of your book, or
by using a spelling app on your iPad. · Make sure that you carefully organise written work completed on the iPad and that you ensure
you respond to the next steps feedback given by your teacher. · Please note in your exercise book when work has been completed on the iPad e.g. see iPad for
my work on…
Do you understand what the marking abbreviations mean?

Well done to Sophie Dale (10LV) who has secured a place in the Northern England Hockey Squad.
In the half term holidays, Sophie will travel to a High Performance Assessment Camp (HiPAC), a residential three-day camp which forms part of the Junior Regional Performance Centre (JRPC) Tier 2 activity. The camps are held annually and are for players in the U15 and U17 age group who have been selected for squads from JRPC Tier 1 activity. These squads are called the Saxon Tigers, the Pennine Pumas, the Wessex Leopards and the Mercia Lynx.
The HiPAC aims to give players in the U15 and U17 age groups first-hand experience of an international training camp environment, in preparation for potential future involvement in a National Age Group Squad (NAGS). Sophie joins fellow squad member Nisha Cant (10JK) who will compete in the England Hockey Futures Cup (EHFC) representing the Pennine Pumas, with players from Manchester, Durham and Leeds. The EHFC is a competition which forms part of Junior Regional Performance Centre (JRPC) Tier 2 activity and is for players in the U16 and U18 age groups, who are selected for squads from JRPC Tier 1 activity.
Good luck girls!

Congratulations to climber Emma Powell (10JPC) whose winter competition season started well last week at the King Kong Climbing Centre in Keswick. Emma finished in first place in her category. This was a great result for Emma who is only just getting back to full climbing fitness. The next competition is in Glasgow on 24th October and is part of the Scottish tooling series .
From the left to right: Emma Whitaker-Pitts, Orla Waterton and Nell Barker far right.
Well done to Emma Whitaker-Pitts (8MH), Orla Waterton (8RRG), and Nell Barker (8LNR), all dancers with the WTA Dance Academy in Ilkley, who took part in the Ilkley Art Trail at the weekend. The girls worked with local artist Lucia Smith and choreographed their own dance interpretation of her work ‘Evening Choreography in Wharfedale’.
Well done to Eleanor Morris (11LO) who has won first prize in the Ilkley Literature Festival’s Young Peoples’ Poetry Competition in the Year 12/13 category. Although Eleanor is in Year 11 the maturity of her work meant that her poem was set alongside work from sixth form students and judged to be the winner by the Festival’s Poet in Residence.
Eleanor and her family have been invited to read her poem, Astrologer, and receive her prize at the Festival’s Special Words Club Night on Friday 16th October at the Otley Courthouse Arts Centre, where a number of young people will be reading their work.

Anti-Bullying Week is coordinated by the Anti-Bullying Alliance and this year runs from the 16th - 20th November. The theme is ‘Make a Noise about bullying’ #antibullyingweek. The key aim of the week is to empower children and young people to make a noise about bullying – whether it is happening to them or to someone else, face to face or online.
We are asking our students to show their support by wearing blue on Children in Need Day (13th November) and be part of the #wearitblue campaign.
