Takeover Challenge Day was a fun, hugely successful and exciting student engagement project where we opened our doors to students to take over adult roles.

The day saw 27 students in decision-making positions, giving them an insight into the world of work. Congratulations and well done to all the students who took part, in the words of Lord Sugar...they were hired!

Review Day Monday 30th November is our annual Review Day. Students will only be in school for their appointment and no school buses will run that day - students need to make their own way to and from school. All students must attend their appointment, unless they are ill and not fit for school. They must also attend in school uniform at a time allocated by their tutors and the process will take approximately half an hour. Each year group has received specific instructions from their Year Leader about producing a presentation for their tutor. Last year, many parents/carers viewed the presentation ahead of Review Day so as to assist their children with their learning, and we would encourage you to please do this again this year. Click here to see more information on ‘My Learning’ (Year 7-9) and ‘My Next Steps’ (Year 10-11) We would be grateful if you could then sign their planner once you have seen the final presentation. Students are expected to undertake independent learning during the rest of the day. Examples of independent learning are available here on the school website, by Curriculum area, if you have any further questions please contact the Key Stage Hubs. All Year 12 and selected Year 13 Students must attend their allocated appointments with their tutor. The process will take approximately 45 mins. Year 13 students who have not completed their UCAS application or CV will be expected to meet with their tutor and complete their form/CV in school. It is expected that all Post 16 students undertake independent learning at home or in the study facilities in school during the day. However, some Year 12 and 13 students would benefit from time to catch up with outstanding work and they will be expected to complete their work in the Post 16 Centre. These students will be notified by their tutor. Some students may wish to take the opportunities of further support which will be available at times during the day. The study facilities are available to all students all day.

Congratulations to Alex Mallinson (7AWD) who took part in the ‘Thought Bubble Competition’ organised by the Leeds Comic Art Festival. The Festival ran between 9-15 November. Entrants submitted an A3, portrait aspect page, telling a single story using a minimum of 6 panels. Alex’s comic strip ‘Summer? Not Yeti’ won first prize in the under 18 category with entries from all over the country! Alex will see her comic published in 2016s ‘Thought Bubble Anthology’ worldwide by Image Comics, and is enjoying the spoils of her labour…£200 worth of comics and graphic novels from Travelling Man and Diamond Comics.

Congratulations to Emily Ackroyd (8PO) who recently took her Level 5 ISTD (Imperial Society for Teachers of Dancing) Ballet and character exam at All Saints Primary School. Emily attends the Wright Theatre Arts and Dance Academy. For the exam, Emily performed some set exercises at the bar and she achieved a distinction.

Well done to our senior A and B netball teams who played Bradford Grammar School on Monday. The senior A team were victorious 16-6 and the senior B team drew 12-12.

Well done to our U13 boys’ cricket team who travelled to Holmfirth for the West Yorkshire U13 boys’ Indoor cricket finals. Their task was to finish the day as league winners in order to progress to the county finals at Headingley in March. The obstacles in their way came in the form of Holmfirth High School and two representatives from Wakefield with the four schools competing in a round-robin tournament.

Ilkley’s players began in determined manner as they built a very respectable 116 for 6 against Wakefield A in their first 8 over innings. Their opponents’ 71 for 5 fell well short of the target and captain, Max Rogers, quickly turned his attention to Wakefield B. As anticipated, Ilkley’s players were far too strong for their second string opponents and could not have demonstrated their prowess more emphatically as they produced a record score of 153 for 0 before going on to dismiss the Wakefield reserve side for 44.

A top quality clash against arch-rivals Holmfirth High proved once again to be the match of the day as the visitors won the all important toss and invited their hosts to bat first and set a total. Arthur Turner, James Patchett and Max Rogers, bowled with such accuracy and speed as to put a stranglehold on Holmfirth’s batters. This, together with exceptional fielding all over the pitch, resulted in Holmfirth being restricted to an under-par 78 for 5. Despite an early scare, Ilkley’s middle order guided the team home with plenty of balls to spare to round off an outstanding day’s work. The players are now looking forward to the challenge of emulating the current IGS Year 10 squad who finished the 2013-14 season as indoor and outdoor county champions.

The team, managed capably by Sports’ Leaders’ Oliver Burton (10JDA) and Matthew Spencer (10JPC) was: Max Rogers Capt. (8ASH); Josh Hall (8MEH); James Patchett (8MEH); Will Hughes (8MEH); Tom Hills (8MEH); Issac Luffman (8MEH); Arthur Turner (8MH); Harry Strachan (8LNR) and Rhys Samuels (8LNR).

Well done to our Post 16 Mathematicians on their recent UKMT Senior Maths Challenge success. 79 students gained either a gold, silver or bronze award with 4 of them being in the top 3000 students nationally and qualifying for the Senior Kangaroo. Best in school this year was Dan Hayes (13PC), with Tommy Matthews (13LR), Rebecca Hall (12PPB) and Nathan Spiller (12RN) also qualifying for the next round. We wish them luck for the 27th November.

Thank you and well done to all of you who donated a Christmas Shoebox as part of Operation Christmas Child. We were able to donate 28 boxes to the charity.

Good luck to Maxim Dale (11JLF), Holly Ramsey (11JI) and Charlotte Whittaker-Pitts (11JI), who will compete in the local heats of the National Rotary Young Chef Competition on Thursday 26th November. Each student has worked hard to prepare two courses to a very high standard. They will be competing against students from other local schools for a place in the regional final which will be held in the new year.

Congratulations to George Dey (10MWC) who competed in the Leeds Junior Abbey Dash and came 3rd out of 179 runners in a time of 6.04 mins. The young athletes braved the pouring rain and wind to take part in the 2K road race in aid of 'Age UK'. The organisers were hoping to raise over £300,000.

Can We Have Some More? Rehearsals are well under way for our forthcoming production of Oliver. The story begins as Oliver leaves the hardship of the workhouse and is sold into an apprenticeship by Mr. Bumble. Bumble, played by Harri Pitches (13AH), adds terrific comedic effect with his impressive sense of his own dignity and continually mangling the King's English!

Escaping from life with the undertakers, the Sowerberrys, Oliver’s adventure really starts as he travels to London where he meets the Artful Dodger a member of a gang of juvenile pickpockets, led by the elderly criminal Fagin, Lucy Carter (13JI). There are some fantastic character parts: the innocent foundling Oliver, Jamie Rimmington (8ELC); the mischievous Artful Dodger, Matthew Hodson (9DSF); the good woman, Nancy, Leona McLoughlin (11JLF) who falls for the archetypal Victorian bad boy, Bill Sykes, Ethan Thompson (12AJK). The Victorian Drama is played out to some of the best known songs from a musical including the crowd pleasing ‘Food, Glorious, Food’ and the jovial ‘Consider Yourself’ to the emotional solo ‘Where is Love?’, which guarantees not a dry eye in the house.

Students from all years are included in the production and the backstage crew. Oliver takes place on 2nd, 3rd and 4th of December, 7pm, tickets priced £8/4 (concession) are available from Reception and the KS Hubs. Good luck to our production company who head off to Ingleborough on their drama residential on Thursday!

Say Hello, Wave Goodbye! We say goodbye to Dave Burrowes, Media, who leaves IGS on Friday 27th November. Dave s is going to

pastures new in Luxembourg. We welcome Alex Van Zomerplaag who joins us on Monday 30th November as your new media teacher.

Hannah McKenzie joins the Science Department at IGS as Head of Science on Monday 4th January from Benton Park where she is currently the Director of Science.

Sign Language Course We had a fantastic response to our sign language course and the successful students and staff who made it on to the limited number sessions had their first taste of sign language last week.

Staff and students all thoroughly enjoyed themselves and started to develop their new skill very quickly. It was really interesting - no books, no worksheets, no iPads, no PowerPoint, no voice! Just the sign language teacher and a black marker pen, yet everyone learnt so much and they are all looking forward to next week.

Dear Sirs, I am a Relief Duty Manager at Transdev Keighley. Yesterday (10/11/15) I was tasked with driving service I12 today due to the unavailability of the regular driver. Oh no thought I (or words to that effect) not another school run! However, having now operated this service I am writing to say how wrong I was in my initial reaction. Your pupils were so polite and well behaved, it was a pleasure for me to be driving the bus! I did thank the young people before they started to alight, and told them I thought they were a credit to both themselves and to your school, such was the good impression they made. Assuming all your pupils behave in this manner, the next time I am tasked with driving a school bus, I will ask if it is an Ilkley Grammar one, if the answer is affirmative, I will look forward to doing so.

Kind regards, Edward Walters

PB at its Best! You know we are very keen on ensuring our students

behaviour on the school buses is the same standard as their behaviour at school...always their Personal Best.

We were delighted to hear some fantastic feedback from a Relief Duty Manager at Transdev Keighley who recently covered the I12. Our students were polite and well behaved, a credit to the school!

Primary Maths Quiz The 7th annual Primary Maths Quiz took place on Tuesday 17th November. We had teams of Year 6 students from All Saints, Ashlands, Ben Rhydding, Burley Woodhead, Menston and Sacred Heart all battling it out for the top spot. The tasks were challenging but some great team work, reasoning and mathematical knowledge from all teams produced some excellent scores.

After the first round it was incredibly close with three of the teams tied in second place! The lead kept changing hands throughout the event with the final placings being ... in third place was Burley Woodhead, in second we had All Saints and our overall winners were Menston. A very big well done to all who took part and a big thank you to the Year 9 students who came along to help the event run smoothly.

Thank You! Thank you and goodbye to Caroline Whitaker (Chairperson) and Julie Brett (Treasurer) who have both stepped down form the PTA. They attended their final meeting, the PTA AGM this week and we took the opportunity to thank them both for all their hard work with the PTA by presenting them with flowers. If you are interested in helping out with the PTA then please email [email protected].
