    Message from the President>>>

    FirstIwantedtosayahugethankyoutoallthestaff andvolunteerswhoworkedtirelesslyonourfundraisingGalainSeptember,weappreciatetheeffortsofallofyou.Forthoseofyouthatwereabletoattend,Iwanttothankyouforyoursupport!Forthoseofyouthatwerenotabletoattend,thethemeofthegalathisyearwasBlueprints:HousingSolutionsforPersonswithBrainInjury.OneofthemandatesofBCCistobeanadvocateforandpromotethedevelopmentofpolicies,supportsandservicesthatwilloptimizethequalityoflifeofindividualsandtheir

    familiesliving

    with

    the

    effects

    ofbrain

    injury.

    There

    are

    anumber

    persons

    with

    acquired

    brain

    injurywithinthehomelesspopulationandthislastyearhashighlightedtherolethatwecanandwillcontinuetoengageintohelpwithhousingsolutionsforourclients.Aswedonothavededicatedfundinginthisarea,weappreciateyourongoingsupport.

    WhenBrainCareCentrewasformedontheamalgamationofNABISandEBIRS,theBoardmettodevelopastrategicplanfortheneworganization.Thestrategicplanfocusedonthefirsttwoyearsoftheorganizatiandthetransitioningoftwoorganizationsintoone.WearenowreachingtheendofthattwoyearperiodandtheBoarexcitedtoseethetransformationthatBCChastaken,thewaythestaff haveembracedtheneworganizationandtrulytakentheideasandvisionthatwehadonpaperandmadeitareality.ItisnowtimefortheBoardandmanagementteatogettogetheragainandformulatethestrategyforBCCoverthenexttwotofivetotenyears.Weplantomeetinear2013todojustthatandensurethatBCCcontinuestogrowwiththemomentumthatithasgainedinthelastyearanda

    half.

    Finally,IwanttothanktheBoardmembersfortheircommitmenttotheorganizationandforthegiftoftheirtime.Specifically,IwanttothankTimSax,whosteppeddownfromtheBoardinOctober.TimhasservedontheBCCBoardatheNABISBoardprevioustothat.ThankyouTimforyourhelponthefundraisingcommitteeandparticipationwithBCwearegratefultohavehadyouapartofourorganization.

    leadbyAshleyandCarolyn.ThisprogramwassupportedbytheBlueGooseInternationalthrougha

    generousdonationof$27,000.00.Thisprogramprovideseducationtoparents,coaches,and

    athletesaboutrecognizingandsafelymanagingconcussionsinsport.Throughthisprogram,young

    hockeyplayersaretestedpreseasontoestablishabaselinescoreforcognitionandotherelements.

    Intheeventthattheathletesuffersaconcussionduringtheyear,heorshecanberetestedtodeterminetheimpactoftheconcus

    andwhenitissafetoreturntoplay.Thisyear,theprogramwasofferedto8MidgetandBantammaleandfemaleathletesaswella

    NAITCollegeMensandWomensHockeyTeams. ThankstoMs.LindaHenderson,AthleticDirectorof NAITAthletics,forarrangin

    useofcomputerlabspaceatNAITtoconductthetesting.Wehavealreadystartedtoplansfornextyearwhichwillintroduce tes

    forminorfootballassociationsalongwithourhockeyprogram.

    ThesearejustacoupleofthenewprogramsthatBCChasbeenworkingonthroughout2012.

    nternationalatourBrainInjuryAwarenessMonthBreakfastinordertosupportaconcussioneducationprogram,which

    ncludedbaselinetestingusingImPACT(ImmediatePostConcussionAssessmentandCognitiveTesting)forminor

    athletes. ImPACTisacomputerizedneurocognitiveassessmenttoolthatassistshealthcareprofessionalsindeterminin

    anathletesabilitytoreturntoplayafteraconcussion(impacttest.com).

    EdmontonMinorHockeyAssociationwaskeentobeinvolvedinthisprogramandBCCStaff deliveredconcussion

    educationandbaselineteststoeightteamsinthemonthofOctober. NAITAthleticsgenerouslydonatedcomputerlab

    spaceforthisprojectandwewerealsoabletoincludetheNAITMensandWomenshockeyteamsintheprogram.

    Afterasuccessfulpilot,BrainCareCentrehopestoexpandthisprogramtoincludeothersportsandcontinueeducating

    eamsaboutconcussionmanagement.

    ThisletterisnotaboutthefinaloutcomeofthegameratheraportionofthestoryconcerningDrewTate.TateraisedeyebrowswhenhetoldaTSNinterviewerathalftimethathedidntrememberthefirsthalfofplayafterhavinghisberungonahelmettohelmethitfromRidersdefensivelinemanTearriusGeorge. Tatewentontoperformwellintoththirdandfourthquarterinspiteofhavingaconcussion.ItismyunderstandingthataconcussionprotocolhasbeenadoptedbytheCFL. Ifthatistrue,howisitpossibleforDrewTatetoevenbeallowedtoparticipateinthethirdandfourthquarterwithsuchasignificantconcussionsymptom?Whatmessagedoesthissendtocollege,highschoolandbantamfootballcoaches,managersandplayers? Itsendsthewrongmessage.ItisthismachoattitudethatexposesathletestoexperienceprolongedsymptomsorinrarecasesseverebraininjurythroughSecondImpactSyndrome.

    TheBrainCareCentre(BCC)receivesmultiplecallsweeklyformparents,athletesandvictimsoftraumawhostruggle

    withongoingconcussionsymptoms. TheBCCservestopreventheadinjurythrougheducationandprovisionofaccurinformation.TheBrainCareCentreanditsmanagementfeelthatthisscenarioandhowitwasmanagedcontradictsthreturntoplayguidelinesthatweendorse.

    event.

    Forthoseofyouwhoarenotfamiliarwiththebraininjuryservicedeliveryparadigminthe

    province,theAlbertaBrainInjuryInitiativesupportsadultswithacquiredbraininjuryto

    reintegrateintotheircommunities. ABIIisanetworkofprovinciallyfundedService

    CoordinationorganizationsacrossAlbertathatassistsurvivorsandtheircaregiverstoaccesssupportsfromvarious

    programsandcommunityresources.

    Theannualforumaffordscoordinatorstheopportunitytonetworkanddiscussrelevantserviceprovisionissuesfroma

    regionalperspective. Additionally,speakersfromawiderangeofdisciplinesprovideeducationalcontentthatis

    applicable

    to

    brain

    injury

    service

    delivery.

    At

    this

    forum,

    coordinators

    received

    education

    sessions

    on

    a

    diverse

    array

    oftopics,includingthefollowing: TimeManagement,ProactiveApproachestoRiskAssessment,ConcurrentDisorders

    (AddictionMentalHealthandBrainInjury)andSmartGoals.

    AtthisyearsforumourServiceCoordinatorswereveryinterestedinthecontentfromthesessionentitled:Doesthe

    BrainReGrowafterInjury? ThespeakerforthissessionwasDr.RobSutherlandfromtheCanadianCentrefor

    BehaviouralNeuroscienceattheUniversityofLethbridge. Dr.Sutherlandspokeabouttheresearchfocusonbrain

    plasticityandcurrentapplicationsofstudiesonrats,suchasstemcelltherapyandgrowthfactors. Moreover,hestate

    thatanimalmodels(e.g..rats)needdevelopmentandareveryrelevantinensuinghumantreatments.Amongthekey

    piecesofinformationthatcamefromhispresentationwasthatbraincapacityismalleableandthatmedicalsedatives

    mayimpedebraininjuryrecovery. OthernotablefindingsincludetheobservationinratsthatNicotinehelpsimprove

    braintreatmentbutcantbeprescribedtopeopleduetothenegativecardiovascularsideeffects. Alsoofnote,studie

    showthattherearesubstantialdifferencesinthestructureofbraincellsbetweenmenandwomen,whichhas

    implicationsforthedevelopmentofindividualizedtreatmentplans.

    Ofrelevancetopersonswhohavesufferedrepeatedconcussions,Dr.Sutherlandmentionedthatunusualproteins

    (AmyloidalandTauprotein),whichareinvolvedinMadCowdiseaseforceneighboringbraincellstochangeand

    crystallize,resultinginpathology.

    Dr.SutherlandmentionedthatrepairtreatmentsinratstudiesincludeadministrationofNicotineandcaffeine,aswella

    olfactoryandtactilestimulation,exerciseandcomplexsocialhousing.

    Withregardtonewdirectionsofresearchandtreatment,DrSutherlandemphasizedtraininginexecutivefunctioning

    andthattraininginavarietyofways,asopposedtohavingasingularfocus,mayimproveissuesrelatedtoexecutive

    dysfunction.

    1. TellmehowyoufirstgotinvolvedwithBrainCareCentre.

    OneofmycolleagueswasontheBoardofoneofBCC's

    predecessororganizations,EBIRS,andtherewasaneedforsomeonewithafinancialbackground.AsaCharteredAccountantIhadthetechnicalknowledgetofillthevacantposition,butIalsohaveastrongbeliefthatitisimportantforprofessionalstogivebacktotheircommunities.AlotofnotforprofitorganizationsdonthavethefundingtohireprofessionalsandthereforerelyontheexpertiseoftheBoardMembers.AsaCA,thisisaverypracticalwayformetogivebacktothecommunity.

    2. Whathassurprisedyoumostaboutworkingwith

    BrainCareCentre?

    Thismaysoundlikeastrangeanswer,butIwouldhavetosaytherelevanceoftheorganizationtothecommunity.AsImentionedabove,IjoinedtheBoardtofillamoretechnicalpositionanddidnothaveasignificantbackgroundinbraininjury.However,itdidnttakemelongtoseetheimportanceofthisorganizationtothecommunityandhowmanypeopleareaffectedbybraininjury.

    3. Whatdoyouwishotherpeopleknewaboutacquiredbraininjury?

    Iwishpeoplerealizedthesignificantchangesthatcanresultfromanacquiredbraininjuryandthatitisoftennotsomethingthatwilljustgoawayorgetbetteronitsown.Thedifficultywithacquiredbraininjuryisthattheremaynotbeanyvisiblesignsoftheinjuryorvisiblechangesasaresultoftheinjuryandthereforeassumptionsaremadeapersonisabletofunctioninthesamewaytheydidbeforetheinjury.Asthepersonwhoacquiredtheinjury,thisapproachcanleadtofrustrationandadownwardspiral

    4. Tellmeaboutsomeofthepeopleyou'vemetwhileworkingontheBrainCareCentreGala?

    Ihadalotoffunatthegalathisyearandmetsomegreat

    people.ButIwassurprisedthatevenpeopleattendingthegalahadverylimitedornoknowledgeofwhatBCCdoes.Thisisaremindertomethatalthoughwehavemadesignificantstridesinourfirstyearandahalf,westilhavealotofworktodo.

    5. What'syourpersonalphilosophyonwhatshouldbedoneaboutconcussions?

    Thatisaverybroadquestion...concussionscanresultfrommanydifferentsituations.Ithinkwhatmostpeoplethinkofwhentheythinkofconcussionsaresportrelatedconcussions,somaybethatiswhereIwillfocusmyanswer.IamexcitedabouttheImPactlicensesthatBCChasgiventominorsportsteamsinthecitytohelpmeasuretheimpactofconcussionssustainedduringtheisportsseasons.Ithinkwhenitcometoconcussions,knowledgeispowerfulandifwecancontinuetoeducatepeopleaboutconcussions,aswellaseducateourselves,wecanbetterlearnhowtopreventconcussionsaswellatreatthosewhohavesustainedconcussions.Onethingthatisscaryisthepressurekidsareundertoperformasyoungathletesandtherefore,thereisalotofpressureto

    ignorethesignsofaconcussionortonotgettheappropriatetreatmentwhenaconcussionhasbeensustained.SomuchvalueisplacedonsucceedingasathletesandIwonderifakidwouldhaveenoughstrengttowalkawayfromasportifthatisthediagnosistheyweregiven.Athleticcareersaregenerallyshortlived,braininjurieswillcontinuelongafter.Atthesametime,Ithinkweneedtomaintainsomeformofpracticality;preventionisnotjustaboutstickingahelmetoneverykidassoonastheygetupinthemorningbecausetheymayfallandhittheirhead.Again,Ithinkknowledgeand

    As aBoard,wehavebeenthroughalotinthelastcoupleofyearswiththeamalgamationofNABISandEBIRS,andallthechallengesthatgoalongwiththat,andtherehavebeentimeswhenIhavethoughtthatthisiswaytoomuchworkforavolunteerposition.ButthenIwillattendaBCC

    eventandhearatestimonialofaclientandknowthattheworkthatBCCdoesissoimportantandthereispurposefortheworkthatwedoontheBoard.IamalwayssoimpressedwiththeBCCstaff andthecaretheygivetotheclients.Toseestaff thataresoengagedintheirjobsandpassionateaboutwhattheyaredoing,itisverymotivatingforme.

    7. Whenyourfriends/familyfindoutthatyouvolunteerasPresidentontheBoardofDirectorswhatdotheysayorask?

    Ithinkmostofthemaresurprisedinitially.BeingaBoardmemberiscommoninmyprofession,butgenerallyalittlelateroninapersonscareer.Atthesametime,peoplethatknowmewellknowthatIlikechallengesandbelieveitisimportanttogivebacktothecommunityandsomaybealittlelesssurprisingtothem.IthinkthenumberonequestionIgetaskedishowIgotinvolvedwithBCC,andmyansweristhesameastheresponseIprovidedabove.

    8. WhatmightBCCmembersbesurprisedtoknowaboutyou?

    IdontknowiftheBCCmembersactuallyknowwhatIdoasacareer.ImentionedabovethatIamaCharteredAccountantbuttherearemanydifferentcareersthata

    personcantakewithintheprofession.IworkasaSeniorManagerintheTaxDepartmentatPricewaterhouseCoopersLLP.Iworkprimarilywithprivatebusinessownersontaxplanningandtaxcompliance.

    9. WhatdoyouthinkwillchangeaboutBrainCareCentreoverthenextfiveyears?

    IthasbeenamazingtoseethechangesinBCCinthelastyearandahalf,toseeBCCconnectwithsomanystakeholdersanddifferentorganizationsinthecommunityandreallystarttogetrecognized.ButthepotentialforBCCissomuchmore.TherearestillsomanypeopleisthecommunitythatdonotknowwhatBCCisorthatitexists,andunfortunately,untilyouneedtheservicesorknowsomeonewhodoes,BCCisoftenoverlooked.AsImentionedinthePresidentsmessage,theBoardandthemanagementteamwillbegetting

    together

    to

    formalize

    a

    strategic

    plan

    for

    the

    nextfi

    ve

    years,butsomeareasthathavegrowninthelastyearanIhopethattheycontinuetogrowisourfocusonbraininjurypreventioninthecommunityaswellasBCCsinvolvementinresearchprojects.
