Welcome to 2018 Welcome back to both returning families and staff and a special “warm” welcome to the new stu-dents and their families who have joined the All Souls St Gabriels community.

We begin the year with 429 students. Of these 125 (up from 116 this time last year) are in the Junior School and 17 in Pre Prep. In Senior School we have 287 students. Our boarding numbers are 175 making us one of the larger co-educational boarding schools in Australia. It is heartening to see the interest in the school across all the grades and we thank you for choosing All Souls St Gabriels School to educate your children.

Meet and Greet Function A big thank you to the catering team, Parents & Friends Association, student and parent helpers and staff who made the “Meet and Greet” welcome barbeque such a success. We have very few opportunities to come to-gether and socialise as a whole school community so it was pleasing to see the number of families in attendance.

Students The Class of 2017 received their re-sults over the break. For some, this was a formality as they had already picked up work and apprenticeships. For the OP eligible students, they then had to wait for tertiary offers. Results were evenly spread with 12% of stu-dents received an OP 1-5 and 82% an OP 1-15. Students were once again

successful in the Vocational Educa-tion sector. Our highest performing student, Meg Burge received the Morris prize of $1000, which she can put towards her further educa-tion.

It is always pleasing to hear the many good news stories from stu-dents who have been able to se-cure full time work and appren-ticeships. Of the students who ap-plied for a place at university, 61% received their first preference. Stu-dents were accepted into a range of courses, with health, science and engineering quite popular.

Thank you to the staff, parents and the wider community who as-sisted the students on their jour-ney by providing work experience, mock interviews, informal advice and engagement with students at functions such as the Futures Din-ner.

Welcome back Mack Horne (Long Service Leave) and Rossi Moore (Maternity Leave).

Burry Work Weekend Thanks to the staff, students, par-ents, past students and friends who assisted at the annual Burry week-end. The school was a hive of ac-tivity as the campus was prepared for the start of the new school year. Workers extended the front hedge down past the cricket nets, planted a new garden along the front of the Administration building and erected a carport at the Ramsay residence.

Over the Christmas break we also completed the following projects: Painted Feetham Dorm Installed a chlorination system to

upgrade the quality of recycled water used

Increased solar lighting around the grounds

Purchased over 500 plants Carpeted Page & Becket Common

rooms Extended the tiered seating out-

side the Information Teachnology block

Renovated some of the onsite residences including a new kitch-en for the old “sick bay”

Junior School Prep & Pre Prep shade structure completed

Upgraded the plumbing to Chad Dorm to improve the water pres-sure

Commenced the upgrade of staff and student desks

Established a new Year 6 class-room to cater for the extra class

General maintenance around the grounds

The Mattingley Centre (library) also received stage one of a makeover with new carpets, painting, and the relocation of fiction and non-fiction to create a lighter and brighter reading area. Some new furniture is on its way, with more planned. We extend our thanks to Beth Silver-wood, librarian, who packed up the whole collection and reinstalled it to enable the work to happen.

Inter-House Swimming On Monday 5 February, the Inter-House Swimming Carnival was held

at the town pool. As usual, it was an exciting night with lots of House spirit. Congratulations to all the swimmers who competed on the night and a huge thank you to Mrs Johnson for organising the event and for the staff that once again gave up their own personal time to make it a success. Please see the sports report for all the results.

Leadership Training Last year, Year 11 students spent time together planning for their fi-nal year. Their ideas were work-shopped and discussed. This year, they returned as 2018 Seniors, knowing that the year was going to fly by. With so much they wanted to achieve, there was no time to waste. They spent a day finalising their pledge to the school and fine tuning how to implement their plans. On Friday 2 February, they were presented with their Seniors badges by their Year 7 buddies at Headmaster’s Assembly. They then delivered their pledge to the school. On Friday evening they made their way up to the Head-master’s residence for a welcome BBQ. Mrs Fleming and myself really enjoyed hosting the event and it had that “family BBQ” feel to it with everyone helping out.

Leos Club Our application to form a Leos club at the school has been ratified by Lions International and we will soon begin our service activities for the year. This promises to be an exciting project and I encourage secondary students to take ad-vantage of the opportunities pre-sented.

The school has a buzz about it at the start of the year with academic expectations, sporting trials, musi-cal rehearsals and a host of activi-ties all underway. I look forward to keeping you updated on the hap-penings at All Souls St Gabriels throughout 2018.

Once again, the beginning of the year has been rather hectic in the senior school.

Welcome to new staff It was great to start the school year with a full complement of secondary teachers. This even in-cludes a new teacher arriving in the next few days to gradually re-place Mrs Johnson as she prepares for maternity leave later this term.

The Senior School has welcomed a number of new teaching staff this year: Mr Tom Baldwin (Economics & Business, English, Study Skills, Design & Technology); Mr Matt Cuckson (Health, PE and Recrea-tion); Mr Richard Fogarty (Dean of Students – Design & Technology Teacher); Mrs Kylie Smythe (Maths and Literacy) and Miss Iso-bel Martin (Maths, Maths B and Chemistry).

Staff moving up from Junior School include Miss Pia Taylor (Science, Maths, Biology and CAD) and Mrs Tonya Peagham (Economics & Business, English, HASS, Literacy and Life Skills). Mrs Melita Dunn will be coming up from Junior School (Yr7 German & HASS). We also welcome back from leave Mrs Rossi Moore (HOD The Arts, Art and English Teacher) and Mr Mac Horne (Relief teacher).

School–Home Connection All teaching staff have been in-structed to make email or phone contact with all of the families of students in their care. By now you should have a connection to all of your children’s teachers for this semester. To further assist with the school–home connection, I have included in this edition of The Phoenix Rising a list of Aca-demic Heads of Department. If you have any specific subject questions it is always best to start

PAGE 3 ISSUE NO 1/2018 9 FEBRUARY 2018

with your child’s teacher before seeking advice from the Head of Department; however, you are more than welcome to include them in any correspondence. The roles of Year Co-ordinators (Acting Year 7 Mrs Carol Shadforth, Acting Years 9 & 10 Mrs Jordan Bense-mann and Years 10-12 Mrs Wendy Fleming) will also be a strong con-nection between school and home.

Academic Awards Final lists for the 2017 Semester 2 Academic Awards and Headmas-ters List awards are being checked as this publication goes to print. It is always great to see so many hard working students receive recognition for their academic ef-forts and achievements. The list of recipients and the award criteria will be listed in the next edition of The Phoenix Rising. I encourage all current students to read the cri-teria and aim to be on the lists for this semester.

Mid-semester Reporting Once again this year, a progress style of academic report will be provided to parents in both Terms One and Term Three. It includes detail on academic progress as well as information on effort and classroom behaviour. Tutor Group and Service & Extra-Curricular re-porting will be included on the End of Semester Report.

The progress report provides more information to parents and stu-dents in a timely fashion mid-semester and will form the basis of deeper conversations at Parent / Teacher Interviews in Terms Two and Four. The fact that a formal report is sent home mid-semester allows for intervention and support to be targeted before the start of the second half of a semester.

Senior Curriculum Updates In the next few editions of this newsletter, I will be outlining the transition plans we are working on for the move to the new Senior Schooling System. Our current Year 10 students will be the first

cohort to go through new system that includes External Examina-tions in Term 4 of Year 12. This will have an impact on planning, teaching and learning that will flow through to the junior second-ary classrooms. I will elaborate more on this in future newsletters.

Please feel free to speak with me regarding aspects of the new sen-ior system. I will do my best to answer your questions – and I certainly appreciate your ques-tions that may trigger more plan-ning necessary at a school level over the next three years of tran-sition.

Welcome 2018 has commenced with the usual flurry of excitement and it was great to see many old and new faces on campus for the Burry Work weekend, meet and greet, boarding orientations and Prefect installation. I have no doubt that this year will be just as enjoyable and successful as 2017 and I look forward to meeting new and reuniting with old faces as the year progresses.

Information overload In the next week students will receive a lot of information includ-ing key dates, unit overviews, homework setting schedule, uni-form requirements, class expectations and much much more. Much of this information will likely be internalised (not passed on) or forgotten until students require it. As parents and caregiv-ers I am sure that this can become frustrating and result in many morning arguments. The best advice I can give to parents who are unsure is to ask questions. At ASSG there are no stupid questions. If you require information we will be only too happy to assist. For those who have secondary students a list of their email addresses appears on this page.

School Photos Information relating to school photograph orders will be posted out in the coming week. You should also receive information via email and on the School’s Facebook page this week. The first of our two photo days will be held Wednesday 7 March. All stu-dents will be required to wear formal uniform on this day with senior students (Yr 11 and 12) requiring blazers. Fe-male senior students are required to wear court shoes for their photographs. Online orders are due by Wednesday 7 March, however, those wishing to return the envelope and payment to the school are asked to do so by Monday 26 Feb-ruary. Your co-operation in adhering to these dates is most ap-preciated.

Dean of Students - Richard Fogarty

This is the first of many contributions that I will make to the Phoenix Rising school newsletter. I thought I would firstly take the opportunity to introduce myself to the ASSG community.

I take up the position as Dean of Students having taught and managed for a number of years at a Boys boarding and day school in New Zealand. I move here with my wife Julie who is an Art teacher and our two children Harriet six and Ma-bel two. Having been welcomed with open arms into the All Souls St Gabriels community is a privilege and I hope my contribution will add to an already outstanding legacy.

I have the privilege this year of working with an experienced and expert team of educators and health professionals.

The school pastoral team provides a wraparound service for students as they navigate their way through their schooling and general lives. It is important to acknowledge that within ASSG we use the term “pastoral” to refer to the holistic well-being of each individual student, this includes aspects such as behaviour, emotional and social well-being. As part of the Anglican Schools network, we are fortunate enough to have the backing of experts in the field of child welfare and protection. This year there is a focus on the potential negative aspects of internet based media such as social media and online gaming. As we begin the new school year I would encourage all parents to have a conversation with their child regarding the use of social media.

Having now been involved in a number of school events I have been impressed by the openness and honesty of the students. I look forward to working with students and the ASSG community.

School Chaplain Bro Nathan-James Chapel Prefect 2018 Congratulations to Connor Rose (Bede Station, Aramac) on his ap-pointment as the 2018 Chapel Pre-fect. Since Year 8 Connor has demonstrated an interest in, and commitment to, the school Chapel and was a server for Page House. Connor has already stepped straight into his role and hopes to explore ways of increasing student participation in Chapel. I am look-ing forward to partnering with Con-nor this year.

Junior School Commencement Service Junior school students gathered this week for their beginning of year service. Students from Year 6 brought forward symbols of their time at school. Among those was the Junior School Chapel Candle. The candle is lit at the beginning of each service to remind as that Je-sus’ words and actions help guide us to make life fulfilling choices and help us reject choices detri-mental to a good life.

The Eucharist The Eucharist is a central part of our Senior School services at All Souls St Gabriels School. I ask that parents discuss their child’s partaking of the elements of Com-munion during our Friday ser-vices. The following may assist in your discussions.

The Eucharist, or Holy Commun-ion, (sometimes also referred to as The Lord’s Supper) is a Rite in the Christian tradition that recalls Jesus’ commandment “to do this in remembrance of me.” The word Eucharist is taken from the begin-ning of the Thanksgiving Prayer in Greek (eucharistia) meaning thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving Prayer recalls Jesus’ words and actions at the Last Supper. He took two ordinary elements from the table, bread and wine, and he blessed and shared them with his friends. Jesus said that the bread was his body which would be bro-ken, and the wine was his blood which would be shed, for the re-demption of the world. He asked his friends to do this in remem-brance (anamnesis) of him. The Greek word anamnesis is more than just recollection of an event. It means to actively recall and participate in the paschal mystery or saving work of God fulfilled in the passion, death and resurrec-tion of Jesus. By partaking of the bread and wine which are the body and blood of Christ we fulfil Jesus’ commandment to partici-pate in this Holy Communion and receive God’s grace of redemp-tion.

It is important that the partaking of the elements of Communion is done with utmost respect. Indeed St Paul said that those who par-take of the body and blood of Christ in an unworthy manner are guilty of sinning against God. Es-

sentially what Paul meant was that those who take Communion should be aware that it represents Jesus’ saving work, that they should ex-amine their motives and do so after having examined their conscience and asked for forgiveness where they have done wrong.

Finally, as to who may take Com-munion at our weekly services. As a Christian Rite it is expected that recipients are Christians, for the most part this is acknowledged through Baptism. Some traditions hold that a person must have been Confirmed or Admitted to Commun-ion. A general rule is that if it is a person’s practice to take Commun-ion in their own Church then they are welcome to do so at our ser-vices. Anyone who has not at least been Baptised and is taking Com-munion or who wishes to take Communion are encouraged to see

Br Nathan–James to discuss this. Parents are welcome to discuss this further.

In our thoughts & prayers; We pray for the repose of the

soul of Shirley Sanger [nee.

O’Malley]. We pray for her

family and friends who mourn

her loss, that they may find

support in one another.

We pray for all new staff and

especially pray for new

to life at school will be made

easy.

We give thanks for the recent

Year 12 Leadership Day Wendy Fleming Senior Secondary Co-ordinator PCYC was the scene for the latest leadership activities for Year 12 students. The day commenced with Mr Fleming shar-ing his vision – work together, support each other, don’t be mean either in person or via social media. Mr Fogarty imme-diately followed with strong expectations from all of the 2018 Seniors to set the tone for the year; getting the little things right like uniform and punctuality which will set the standard for the bigger things to come. After sitting still, it was time to move and there was plenty of noise and activity as the Sen-iors had to find groups of different sizes. The final challenge was to make a group with one person from each House - quite challenging when we consider that there are not even numbers across the Houses with Year 12 students. Mrs Flem-ing then reminded the students of the goals they set at the end of 2017; to be remembered for something and to work more closely with the younger students. School Captains, Breanne and Tim, then addressed the Year 12 group, speak-ing strongly and gaining an enthusiastic response from their peers. Mr Dietrich concluded the first session with the theme of “Day One”; this is the first day of the rest of your life. After morning tea Mrs Storey addressed the group about the need to be prepared and organised, identifying useful strategies as well as talking about some of the potential pitfalls of Year 12. Mr D followed up with some stress management strategies – useful tools to get through Year 12. The students then broke into groups to plan specific details of the activities to be organised by the Seniors throughout this year – watch out for further details! Heads of House joined the group for lunch and then stayed to catch up with students from their House, using this time to set the tone and organise House activities. The final presentation from Mr Fogarty was centred around the ongoing issue of cyber bullying and cyber safety, finishing with a question and answer session. The culmination of the first week was a gathering at the Headmaster’s Residence for a BBQ including the 2018 Seniors and staff who worked with them throughout the leadership activities this week. This day would not have happened without the input from Breanne and Tim, Mr Fogarty, Mr Dietrich, Mrs Sto-rey, Mrs Fleming, Ms Walker, Mrs Peace, Mrs Salisbury, Miss Taylor, Mrs Johnson, Mr Papas, Mr Thomson, Mr Riddle, Reggie and, of course, all the Year 12 cohort who were engaged throughout.

Pastoral Care Team Welcome back for 2018. For those families new to our school the role of the Pastoral Care Team is to support the wellbeing of students at ASSG. This year we welcome several new members including Richard Fogarty (Dean of Students), and Carol Shadforth and Jordan Bensemann who are sharing the Junior Coordinator role. A full list of members is at the bottom of this page. The Pastoral Care Team is guided by MindMatters, a mental health initiative for secondary schools that aims to im-prove the mental health and wellbeing of young people. MindMatters provides a 'framework', upon which we build our mental health strategy. As part of MindMatters we seek twice-yearly feedback from students, staff and parents about aspects of wellbeing and mental health, enabling us to target areas that are important to different parts of our school community. Following the feedback received from those surveyed last year, one area of focus we will be building on this year is meeting parents’ information needs. Watch this space for more information on how we will be doing this, and other targets for improvement across the year. Tips for dealing with homesickness As with the start of every year we see many students who are away from home for the first time, or may be hav-ing some difficulties settling back in after the long break. Some students may be homesick on their first night away, but others may not experience homesickness until after the initial excitement with starting, or being back at school wears off. It is important to remember that whilst lots of students do get homesick, lots also go away to school successfully. The following are tips that many students have found helpful in managing their homesickness: 1. Homesickness is normal and it usually goes away. Remind your child to give themselves time to get used to

school. 2. Get involved! Encourage your child to get involved with other students, classes, and activities in school and

boarding. The sooner they get used to school, the less strong the feelings of homesickness will become. 3. Call, write, or email home. Phone calls can sometimes make the feelings worse in the first couple of weeks,

so be careful. Writing letters or emails can be more helpful. Talk to your child’s Senior Resident for specific feedback about how to support them.

4. Talk! Encourage your child to talk about their feelings with a friend, senior resident, or teacher. Just getting their feelings off their chest can give your child a new perspective and make them feel better.

5. Keep active. Encouraging your child to join a sporting team or getting involved in activities helps them to fit in, and takes their mind off missing home for a while. Exercising is also a great way to get rid of negative feelings.

6. Make a list of things that your child enjoys doing. When they are feeling down, encourage your child to pull out their list and pick something that will cheer them up.

7. Visiting family and friends outside of school can be great, but it is important for your child to get to know oth-er students, so talk with your child’s Senior Resident about how often this might be helpful, or if it might be getting in the way of your child building relationships with their peers.

Most importantly there are many staff at ASSG to help your child manage. If your child’s homesickness doesn’t go away, or gets worse they may need some extra help to deal with it. Remember to let their teacher, Senior Resi-dent or anyone from the Pastoral Care Team know so we can help.

Denis Riddle Award Leader Information for parents of Year 9 students This year we are inviting Year 9 students to enrol in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award with a chance to complete their Bronze level of the Award. Students who enrol will need to demonstrate a high level of commitment in three areas; sport (or recreation), skill (a learning activity) and service (helping others). All three areas can be completed with our school-based activities, such as regular team sport and training, after hours learning activities and helping in the dormitory, chapel or in clubs. In addition, there is an expedition component which involves a camp, planned for Term 3, as an outdoor activity. Since 2000, the School has seen over 300 students complete the Bronze, Silver or Gold level of the Award. These achieve-ments are internationally recognized and highly regarded by employers. If you would like your Year 9 student to enrol, then encourage them to fill in the enrolment form available from Denis Riddle, Award Leader, [email protected] Enrolments must be completed by the end of February.

As with every school, there is al-ways much to be done at the start of the year to get the build-ings and grounds all ‘spruced up’ ready for the start of the school year. The Junior School took on a wonderful transformation during the Burry Weekend, with the pruning, mowing, weeding, gur-neying, blowing, painting, gar-dening etc. etc. We are very grateful to everyone who gave their time over the weekend. Thank you.

My thanks are also extended to the JS staff who have worked so industriously to make sure they were well prepared for the stu-dents’ return. The classrooms look amazing! They are organ-ised, colourful and welcoming. It has been a pleasure to visit clas-ses and see the enthusiastic stu-dents with beaming smiles and demonstrating a great attitude towards their learning. Meet the JS Class Teachers The JS Meet the Teacher night will be held on Monday 12 Febru-ary, from 5.15—6.45 pm. This will be an opportunity for class teachers to outline their learning programs and expectations and put parent faces to names.

Communication There are many ways to receive information about what is happen-ing at ASSG. As we live in the age of smart phones and social media, most of our communication to par-ents and the wider School commu-nity is via email, School Website: www.allsouls.qld.edu.au and School Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/AllSoulsStGabrielsSchool Please advise the School if your email address has changed so that we can update our records. Addi-tionally, if you are not receiving in-formation from the School, please let us know ASAP so that we can remedy the situation Year 6 We are very excited to have two Year 6 classes this year. All Year 6 students will play an important leadership role in the Junior School. To help the students build their capacity as student leaders, they will be traveling to Magnetic Island on Tuesday 20 February to enjoy a day of educational leader-ship activities. The day will focus on developing and applying the 5 Cs of team work (communication, co-operation, commitment, care and concern). A highlight for the Year 6 students will undoubtedly be the trip to Canberra. This trip will enable the students to consolidate their learn-ing of Civics and Citizenship in a very practical and meaningful way.

Junior Playground Our thanks are extended to the Cancer Council for providing fund-ing for the shade structure over the junior playground. Thanks also to the Maintenance Crew for get-ting the shade up and ready for the start of 2018.

As a growing School, it is great to see our Prep, Year 1 and Year 2 students enjoying having another area to play and have fun during lunch playtimes.

Technology in the JS Classrooms Junior School students have ac-cess to a range of technologies to enhance the teaching and learn-ing experiences. Technologies in-cluding iPads, laptops, the “Cubetto” Robot (Early Years cod-ing resource) and now three in-teractive flat panel displays (Year 2, 3 and 6P), are being used by JS staff to create a learning envi-ronment that is dynamic, engag-ing, collaborative and informed.

In readiness for the new school year, Mr Judd Murray and Mr Robert Millican (IT Department) have assembled 3 new ActivPan-els, upgraded the laptops, reimaged the iPads and down-loaded software etc. We thank them for their time and exper-tise.

Personal best We expect that 2018 will be an-other productive and successful year of learning for us all. We will do our professional best to provide a safe, caring and re-sponsive learning environment in which your children are given every opportunity to achieve suc-cess. Together we plan to build upon the excellent reputation All Souls holds within the wider community. The involvement of our parents and wider School community remains vital to the success of all our students. With your continued support we are confident our students will con-tinue to grow and achieve their personal best.

The Junior School staff and I feel privileged to be part of this School community. It’s going to be a great year and we are excited about what is ahead!

Instrumental Music Leslie Croker Instrumental Music Co-ordinator Welcome back to another year of music at ASSG! The year started with three of our students accompa-nying the hymns during the prefect induction on day one, and playing the national anthem on assembly on day four. Permission forms for in-strumental music lessons are rolling in and lessons have started.

Year 7 students will all be learning a band instrument in classroom music this semester. The band room has been a hive of activity as they have been testing out all the instruments!

Students should be encouraged to set themselves a good practice rou-tine right from the start of the year. Home practice helps students re-member the material they’ve cov-ered in their lessons and also devel-ops and strengthens the muscles required to play their instrument. Parents can help with this by re-minding students to practise regu-larly and making sure they are prac-tising all the material set by their in-strumental tutor – not just playing over the easy pieces they’ve already learnt well.

2018 promises to be a busy year with lots of performance opportuni-ties for our students.

Europe Tour 2019

Denis Riddle - Tour Leader

At this stage we have about 20 students, parents and staff who have registered their interest in the School’s Europe Tour over the Easter break in 2019. We have vacancies for a dozen or so more students and a few parents. This really is a trip of a lifetime, but time is running out. We need to know numbers by the end of term so definite bookings can be made.

The Tour is open to students currently in Years 10 and 11.

If you require a registration of interest form, contact Denis Riddle, Tour Leader, [email protected]

Davin Marshall Senior Resident I extend a warm welcome to all boarders and boarding parents for 2018. The intent we have set in the dorm this year is for excellence in all things, involvement and re-spect for each other. We have some new boarders this year and we wish to welcome them into our boarding communi-ty. In Year 6 we have Archie Stew-art who will be in Junior School this year, and his brother Jimmy who is in Year 8 and has already spent a year as a boarder in Rock-hampton. Their family has recently moved back into the district from Biloela. In Year 7 we have Locky Goodwin from Alpha and Jaspah Callaghan from Ilfracombe in the Central West. We also have a new boarder in Year 11. Jayme Oakley has joined us from High School and we wish him the best this year. The start of the year is always a busy time and this year is no dif-ferent. The Year 7s have their camp this week and the Inter-House Swimming carnival also took place on Monday this week. The Seniors have made their pledge to the school and received their badges and Darby and Con-nor were inducted as Prefects in a ceremony on Tuesday. We have a good group of seniors in Page this year and I can already feel the presence they bring to the dormitory. We will have a great year in Page this year and I am looking forward to being a part of this wonderful community we strive to create. Please feel welcome to Page Dor-mitory as a parent and contact me if you have any concerns about your son in boarding.

Feetham

Dormitory

Jake Diery Senior Resident

Welcome back to our returning families and a special welcome to those new families that have just arrived to start their journey with us in Feetham dorm. I hope every-one enjoyed a break over Christ-mas. The boys in Feetham all seem to be settling in, it’s great to see them all catching up and hav-ing a laugh together and talking about last year and what they did on the holidays.

Our leaders for 2018 were induct-ed on the first day of school and I would like to congratulate them all and wish them luck on their jour-neys this year. A few of the Year 12 boys can’t believe that they have actually made it to Year 12, I reminded them that the job is not done yet. We welcome 7 new boys, Mac Sharp-Callaghan in Year 6, and the following Year 7’s; Bailey Cowan, Bryce Cowan, Kadyn Flanagan, Kye Smollett, Mitchell Fox and Ryan Grant into Feetham this year. Matthew Muston has also joined us as a boarder this year after be-ing a day student for the last few years. The Year 7 boys will all ship off to camp this Tuesday which I have no doubt they will enjoy.

We also have our Inter-House Swimming Carnival this week and I would like to wish the Feetham boys best of luck. Term one is starting to get busy, so there will be a few tired boys over the next few weeks so homesickness may creep in. If you get that phone call with lots of tears or they just sound down, please give me a call so I can try to help. Also, just a reminder if your son is going out on leave, please just send me an email saying who he is going with and when he will leave and come back. Ramsay

Dormitory

Rhett Butler Senior Resident

Welcome to 2018. My name is Rhett Butler and I have taken over as Ramsay House Sen-ior Resident this year. I look for-ward to becoming an even bigger part of the All Souls and St Gabri-els community and am grateful for the opportunity to work with your children. Being a relief supervisor last year was a great experience and gave me a chance to get to know the boys and I am really ex-cited about this next step.

I have lived in the Charters Towers area for the past 12 years running my own business and raising my young family with my wife Jo. As a past student of All Souls and St Gabriels School I hope to help the boys feel the same sense of pride and belonging that I experienced during my time, both here in Ram-say House and the school but to really enjoy their boarding life.

PAGE 14 ISSUE NO 1/2018 9 FEBRUARY 2018

I hope everyone enjoyed a well-deserved break over the Christmas Holidays. The boys have arrived back in good spirits and have set-tled into their routines quite nicely. Our older boys have done a great job showing the new guys the ropes and making them feel wel-come.

Ramsay House dived straight into a busy schedule starting with House Swimming trials on Saturday morn-ing, to be followed up with the In-ter-House Carnival on Monday and Year 7 camp from Tuesday morn-ing.

We have also had a lot of interest from the boys wanting to sign up and play club sport, which is terrif-ic.

Please feel free to call me if you have any concerns or questions.

Becket

Dormitory

Jenny Cantle Senior Resident

Welcome to all new and old board-ers and their parents. Having sur-vived my first year as a Senior Resident I have lined up for a sec-ond year and am really looking forward to it. We welcome a cou-ple of sisters in Becket this year, Erin and Reese Wilkinson have joined their big sister Olivia and have settled in well.

We have a small but enthusiastic group of Year 12’s this year, with Katie, Lissabelle, Angela and Na-talie stepping up into that senior role and with their support I am anticipating a great year in all as-pects of boarding life.

It has been a busy start to the year as always with trials for the Inter-School Swimming Carnival held on Saturday morning and the carnival to be held on Monday Night. Angela Jones, Becket House Captain, along with a group of fel-low team mates have been busy making up badges for all the beck-et girls so they know what events they are in. “GO BECKET”

The Year 7’s are busy packing this weekend for their camp at Fair-bairn Dam in Emerald which left on Tuesday morning, and I have no doubt they will have a great time. The girls also have netball and touch trials later this week which will keep them busy. It has been a great first week and girls have slotted back into the rou-tine of boarding life extremely well and we look forward to what this term holds for us.

Until next edition please take care and contact me should you need to discuss anything concerning your child.

Alban

Dormitory Vanessa Herring Senior Resident Hello! I’m Vanessa Herring, the new Senior Resident of Alban House. I am not really new to the school, I’ve been part of the Souls team for almost 3 years now but this will be my first year as a resi-dent dormy. I look forward to get-ting to know everyone better and introducing you all to my family as well. It’s been a whirlwind first week of term with so much happening but everyone’s settling into boarding life nicely. It can be a difficult tran-sition for our new girls but they’re handling it with maturity beyond their years. We are off to a flying start, with excitement brewing as we geared-up for the Inter-House Swimming Carnival last Monday night – our first chance this year to exercise the Alban House war cry! Then we farewelled our Year 7 girls as they headed off to Emerald for camp. I’d like to welcome back all the fa-miliar faces of last year and intro-duce our new Alban girls: Wynita Deem, Year 6 Wynita hails from Cambeela Sta-tion, Hughenden. Charlette Deem, Year 7 Charlette is Wynita’s big sister. Hannah Jenkins, Year 7 Hannah joins us from Georgetown. Carley Shephard, Year 7 Carley comes from Lilyvale Station near Coen. Olivia Haines, Year 7 Olivia is Abbey’s younger sister and she joins us from Tennant Creek. Nakisha Willshire, Year 7 Nakisha and her family live at Pentland.

Erin Blennerhassett, Year 7 Erin originates from Goshen Sta-tion, Mt. Garnet. Sienna Johnson, Year 8 Sienna comes all the way from the Burudu Homelands. Tosha Pearson, Year 9 Tosha joins us from Palm Island. I’d like to say a special thanks to the Alban House seniors, who’ve been a wonderful support for me, in the hectic week that was! Sarah Frohloff, Tayah Hopkins, Tahlia Bellamy and Tayla Mittelstadt – You really stepped into your role as seniors and the guidance, care and support you’ve shown the girls of Alban House is to be com-mended. Thank you.

Dormitory

Yvonne Schaefer Senior Resident

It's great to have all the girls back and so enthusiastic to get back in-to it. Our first week has been real-ly good and all the old heads are being very supportive of our new kids and helping them settle in.

We had swimming trials on Satur-day morning and it was great to see everyone there and enjoying being part of Chad House. Our seniors did a great job helping or-ganize the trials and they have al-so had a couple of engagements, with a dinner at Mr and Mrs Flem-ing’s house and leadership days with our staff. They have been positive role models and a great help to me as well. We really ap-preciate their support.

We have a new Year 12 who has moved into our dorm this year. She has already made lots of friends and is a favourite amongst the girls with her friendly outgoing nature.

Leave Just a reminder, if your daughter is going out on weekend or day leave, could you please let us know who they are going on leave with, their hosts' phone number, and the expected time of depar-ture and return.

As always we are always at the end of the phone if you need us. Welcome to 2018
