The 2006 Winter Olympics left a major legacy in Torino and throughout Piemonte: new and effi cient transport infrastructures, sports facilities amongst the most modern and high-tech in the world and new hospitality facilities.

Torino hosted the XXIII Architects’ World Congress and is the host city of the “3rd Bio-Ethanol Conference”, of ESOF 2010 (EuroScience Open Forum) and of many other important international events.

Torino was the fi rst city worldwide to be nominated “World Design Capital” by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design, in recognition of the crucial role it plays on an international level. Design is perhaps the feature that most characterizes the made in Italy, from the automotive industry to con-sumer products and fashion, and it is deeply rooted in Piemonte.

An innovative, international outlookThe economy is characterized by its strong propensity for innovation and internationalisation. Not only because of its geographical position, but for a number of historical and cultural factors and the long tradition of its manufacturing industry, Piemonte has been able to establish and maintain close commercial and trade links with neighbouring countries and with others further away. It continues to be one of the Italian regions with the highest rate of internationalisation of its economy, with exports accounting for about 28% of the regional GDP. Piemonte’s international reach does not only concern exports, however, but also services, capital, people and knowledge. As confirmation of the region’s international competitiveness, over 650 foreign companies have chosen to invest in Piemonte, which ranks second in Italy in terms of direct investments by foreign companies.

DIVERSIFIED, DYNAMIC ECONOMY: TRADITION IN INNOVATION

THE REGION HAS BEEN A HUB FOR MAJOR TECHNICAL INNOVATIONS FROM THE ELECTRIC ENGINE IN THE 19TH CENTURY, TO THE MP3 FILE FORMAT, AND THE COMMON RAIL FOR DIESEL ENGINES.

With over 4 million inhabitants, a per capita income that is 14% above the European average and a solid economic structure, Piemonte is one of Europe’s driving forces. It is an extremely welcoming and promising region, dynamic in industry as in services, with a very effi cient and reliable public administration.

“We chose to establish our Italian commercial branch in Turin, not only for the importance of the local automotive cluster, which represents a strong market potential for us, but also for the highly professional workforce.” K. Kohno, Managing Director of Sumitomo Electric

Piemonte, with its capital Torino, has a great innovation heritage. It can be said that it exists “from when Italy exists”, and, in fact, the country’s unification process started in Piemonte, with Torino Italy’s first capital. Science and research form part of Piemonte’s DNA: from Erasmus to Norberto Bobbio, from Lagrange to Nietzsche and the Nobel Prize Rita Levi Montalcini, over the cen-turies many renowned thinkers, scien-tists, writers and artists believed Piemonte the ideal place for reflection and scientific elaboration.

In recent decades, Piemonte, tradition-ally the Italian centre of the automotive industry, has diversified its own eco-nomic structure, directing itself more and more toward sectors tied to the knowledge economy. It focuses on R&D activities and invests in strategic sectors such as renewable energy, sustainable mobility, ICT, life sciences, pharmaceu-tics and healthcare, logistics.

In research as in education and training, there are centres and competencies of international standing that underpin the consolidation of an increasingly knowl-edge-based economy and society. 20% of the entire R&D expenditure of Italian companies is concentrated in Piemonte, fuelling innovation and enabling the commercial system to leave its mark on the world market of cutting-edge prod-ucts.

As the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) noted in its Review of Regional Innovation - Piedmont Italy (2009), Piemonte devel-ops “unitary and coherent planning for research and innovation policies” that aim at providing incentives for research seen as a factor of development, innova-tion and internationalisation, and pro-moting collaboration between the various bodies and facilities. Innovation is a theme that runs through major threads: biotechnologies, nanotechnologies, infor-mation and communication technologies, underpinned by the development of new energy techniques and new production systems. The many R&D centres special-ized in automotive and information and communication technology, as well as in many innovative sectors such as bio and nanotechnologies, offer a network of top quality skills and facilities. Among them are: CNR-National Research Council with 11 labs (www.cnr.it), CRF - Centro Ricerche Fiat (www.crf.it), CRIT - Technological Innovation and Research Centre of the national broadcasting com-pany (www.crit.rai.it), GM Powertrain Europe (www.gm.com) research centre, INRIM-Istituto Nazionale di Ricerca Metrologica (www.inrim.it), ISMB-Istituto Superiore Mario Boella (www.ismb.it), Microsoft Innovation Centre (www.mic-torino.it), Proplast (www.proplast.it), RTM Laser Technologies (www.rtm.it), Telecom Italia R&D centre (www.tele-comitalia.com).

The Innovation Hubs Piemonte Region supports with dedi-cated financial measures the Innovation Hubs, made up of groups of companies and research bodies that operate in a specific technological sector, co-ordinat-ed by a management body. Their creation aims to stimulate the development of business research and innovation ac-tivities, enhancing the potential already present, fostering internationalisation processes and increasing the attractive-ness of business investments in Piemonte.

Technology sectors and reference areas

Food and agriculture, bio and biomedical technologies, sustainable chemicals, mechatronics, advanced production systems, digital creativity and multime-dia, renewable energy, energy saving and sustainability, ICT and textiles are the priority sectors and technological frame-works identified by the Region together with the areas of reference, related to all the provinces.

– Investments for more than € 30 billion to further improve the region’s infrastruc-tures.

A synergic logistics system The region’s road and rail networks are the nation’s most close-knit and provide Alpine routes to both the north and west. All the Region’s initiatives in this field are aimed at strengthening the whole logistics system, thus also responding to new business requirements. The key points for action include the strengthen-ing and specialization of the intermodal centres and platforms that constitute the backbone of the north-west’s logistics system. The long-term objective of Piemonte is a global synergy of the logistics system that will enable the region to expand and strengthen the already rich industrial panorama of the Italian north-west.

High capacity logistics platformsThe increasing importance of the port of Genova is fuelling the growth of capacity for outbound logistics from Piemonte to Europe. Substantial public investments are being made to exploit north-west Italy’s strategic position as a destination port.

S.I.TO (www.sitospa.it) is the freight village of Torino. It is located in a geo-graphically strategic position both for national and international connections and provides a railway yard with a shuttle service to France.

C.I.M. Centro Interportuale Merci Novara (www.cimspa.it) is one of the main refer-ence points of the intermodal network in Italy. Situated on the border between the key regions of the Italian economy, Piemonte and Lombardia, at the cross-roads of two important international routes, it is a gateway towards the most important destinations in northern France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Great Britain.

Interporto Rivalta Scrivia (www.interportors.it) is a multipurpose logistics hub, located in the centre of an important industrial and commercial area in the north-west of Italy. It was estab-lished to act as the back port of Genova and as an additional wharf further inland.
