Friday 31st March 2017 The Newsletter of King Henry VIII Preparatory School Academic Year 2016-2017 Issue 24
HEAD’S MESSAGE Weeks are never dull at King Henry’s Prep but this week seems to have been packed with variety! There are fluffy chicks in Year 1 and on Monday there were lambs on the field at Swallows for the first time since Mr Phipps was the Headmaster! Year 3 set off on their ex-pedition to Hadrian’s Wall whilst Year 5 trekked around the Memorial park as part of their Health focused activ-ity week. Year 1’s portrayal of the changes in the sea-sons, which caused much merriment with all members of the audience, has mirrored our actual weather this week. In between all of these events we have success-fully recruited inspirational new teachers for next aca-demic year – more information on this will follow short-ly. In the final four days of this term we will be squeezing in a Tea time Soloists and Small Ensembles Concert at Hales; Parents Association sponsored Discos at Swallows and Hales (please see the associated notice in Sagitta for more information); a coffee morning at Swallows; and an Easter activities day. As you take time this weekend to think about the aca-demic progress your children have made during the Spring term, the hustle and bustle of school life serves as a reminder that it is happy, engaged, enthusiastic children who learn most successfully. This is the reason why teachers strive to make their lessons relevant through the introduction of first hand experiences into the curriculum; it is why we passionately protect the full breadth of subjects where tragically, other schools are being forced to lose focus on the Arts and Sports. We are proud and blessed, as an Independent School to be able to make these choices for our pupils today and into the future. Staff news Following a period of ill health, Mrs Jane Coles will be leaving King Henry VIII Preparatory School. If possible, she hopes to attend Prize Giving in July. Mrs Coles has been a Senior Manager and teacher at King Henry VIII since 1979 and the school and Governors of the Coven-try School Foundation would like to thank her for her immense contribution and years of service. Should any parents or children wish to send a message to Mrs Coles, this can be done through the Hales Office. School will ensure that these get safely to her. Parents of children in Year 4 will be receiving a sepa-rate letter outlining the arrangements school will make to ensure the continued academic and pastoral well-being of all children in the year group.

EASTER EGG HUNT
Nursery children, Reception and Year One
will be having their annual Easter Egg hunt
around school next week. There are clues
to solve and laminated eggs to find in exchange for
the real thing! Very eggs-citing!!
NURSERY NEWS The children have begun to look at Spring and Easter
this week, together with the lovely story of ‘Handa’s Hen’. They have made spe-cial eggs for their Easter cards which they cut them-selves using fantastic physi-cal skills while using the scissors. They also used a range of media and tools to
decorate their eggs with paint, glitter, glue and other materials. We have had some fantastic patterns and amazing creative designs! The children have been investigating eggs, chicks and straw in the outdoor area. They have initiated and extended their own learning in this area and have enjoyed hiding the eggs in the straw with the chicks inside. They have also matched the variety of col-oured eggs and fitting them together, collecting eggs and chicks in the baskets and counting them to see how many they had collected. This activity has been thoroughly enjoyed by all. The next plan is to take the children to visit some real chicks which are in school!!
The new addition of tad-poles in Nursery have also been a hit with the chil-dren, they have been amazed watching them and anticipating what will happen next. This has in-spired us to talk about their life cycle and is also
a fantastic experience for the children to watch their transformation over time. Hopefully we will have frogs at some point! The children have been revisiting the letter sounds which they have learnt this term. They worked fantastically with the magnetic letters and enjoyed putting them together and thinking of special words they can make with them. Next week is our final week of term. Please remem-ber to send in the children’s creations for the Easter Bonnet Parade on the last day, which is Thursday 6th April and please can all Bonnets be named. May we reiterate that parents do not need to go to any ex-pense with this, you may find some fantastic arts and craft resources around the house and it will be a fun activity for parents to join in with. We can’t wait to see them!
During the Summer Term, Nursery children will require their full white PE kit in school on PE days. This is to help them prepare for transition to Reception in Sep-tember and begin to get changed into their full kit. Thank you. Forthcoming Date for your Diary We have a Nursery trip planned for Tuesday 23rd May. More details will follow with a letter sent home next week. RECEPTION NEWS The Rainbow Fish Our Topic book this week has been The Rainbow Fish. The Rainbow Fish is an excellent book because it asks the question if the consideration of the happiness of all is reasonable at the cost of one’s own happiness. The children have agreed that having friends is valuable to them, so they would give up something they cherished. They also stated that the Rainbow Fish shouldn’t have had to share his scales and still be accepted by the oth-er fish, because it seems unfair to be shunned by a com-munity just because you were born with something nice. This book poses the moral that being selfish and unkind will leave you lonely, but it also leaves the door open for discussion on the topic of how much should you give in order make friends? Where do you draw the lines? Sharing is a topic that remains on many children's minds, so this book is a good way to introducing them to the finer points of the topic. There are many Rainbow Fish books and we hope to share more stories.
Tadpoles We’ve had some very exciting little friends join us in Reception this week. Our children are lucky enough to be observing tadpoles growing and changing. Raising tadpoles is a fun and educational for the children where you can gain fascinating insight into a frogs life cycle right before their eyes. We are learning that tadpoles need a lot of care to develop into frogs and this links nicely with our areas of discussion this week; ‘asking questions’ and ‘looking after living things’.
Uniform We would like to remind parents that all uniform worn should be full school uniform. For example, socks should be grey and shoes black. Items are listed in de-tail in the Uniform & Sports Kit booklet. Thank you for your continued support.
WHAT A FABULOUS WEEK IN YEAR 5! We have tried a range of healthy fruit, vegetables and homemade snacks, enjoyed a Yoga session, were given ad-vice on posture and exercise from a physiotherapist, learned about eating a rainbow with a PHD student from Coventry University and enjoyed a sensory walk in the Memorial Park among other activities!
Everyone has been earning stickers for making healthy food choices at break and lunch time. It has been lovely to have so many parents joining us to share their expertise and to support the children. Thank you to everyone in-volved – the children have had a truly wonderful (and healthy) week.
NETBALL FIXTURE RESULTS
Wednesday 29th March
We had a lovely season finale with all the Year 6 girls playing netball matches at Warwick Prep. Due to a number of injuries and illnesses we ended up with 3 teams playing their final matches of the year and for the Prep school. All the matches were very close with some outstanding defence, fast attacking play and su-per shooting. Results: KHPS U11 A team v Warwick Prep A 15 – 12 WON KHPS U11 B team v Warwick Prep B 7 – 11 LOST KHPS U11 C team v Warwick Prep C 1 - 4 LOST and 1 - 1 DREW
U11 KHPS Netball tournament - WINNERS! What a fantastic morning we had on Saturday 25th March hosting our annual netball tournament here at KHPS. This was the 5th tournament of the term for the U11 ‘A’ squad! All the teams we regularly play throughout the netball season entered, making it a very tough, nail biting tournament and anyone’s to play for! The tournament was run as a ‘round robin’ event meaning every school played each other. Our results were as follows: KHPS v Warwick Prep – WON 8 -7 KHPS v Bablake – DREW 8 - 8 KHPS v Eversfield – WON 22 -2 KHPS v The Croft – WON KHPS v Fairfield – WON 12 – 7
This placed us 1st
at the end of the

ment for the girls
