THE URSULINE ACADEMY ILFORD
A Catholic Academy for Girls
Weekly News – Issue 33
12th June 2020
Dear Parents/Guardians
Headteacher’s Headlines… As you will have seen in the news, the government have asked schools to provide some face to face contact for
Year 10 and 12 students. I am pleased to report that we have been now been able to finalise our plans and we
have written to parents with the details. Please see attached letters on pages 21 – 24. I know that many girls
and parents are anxious about a return to school and I would assure you that we have extensively risk assessed
the provision and believe that all necessary measures are in place to ensure everyone’s safety. Our school
governors have approved our plans. We have given a lot of thought to the provision we will offer and, whilst
the time in school per student is limited, for Year 10 it will be in very small groups (maximum of 12 students in
classrooms) and an average group size of 6 students. For Year 12 there may be some larger groups in the Hall,
but this will still provide a good level of targeted support to students.
Some parents have enquired about face coverings; all the advice we have been given is that students and staff
do not need masks in school. They are now required on public transport, but this is because it is difficult to
maintain 2 metre social distancing on a bus or tube. In school we will be observing strict distancing. We have
removed some furniture from the classrooms we are using to provide more space and there is signage around
the building to remind the girls of the 2 metre rules. See the pictures below of the ‘new normal’ at Ursuline.
Online learning will continue as before, our offer is to supplement and reinforce this. No new material will be
covered so as not to disadvantage those girls unable to attend. The choice of whether to send the girls into
school or not remains, of course, with parents. Of course, we are hoping we will be able to welcome more
students back in September.
2
We have staff training on Monday 15th and Tuesday 16th (half each day) to prepare for the girls returning
next week I know many staff are eager to return. Of course, staff will be maintaining the remote learning
for the rest of the school and I would like to thank them for the efforts they have been making since
lockdown. Our staff are fantastic and always willing to go the extra mile. I know many of you have
extended thanks and good wishes to staff which I will pass on next week.
Our school uniform shop is currently operating with online orders but will soon be reopening its store on
Cranbrook road alongside the opening of other retail stores.
Please see letter on page 26. Also attached to this Newsletter (page 25) is a letter from Public Health
about immunisations which I invite you to read.
The newsletter is as usual packed with good news stories and ‘shout outs’
to those girls who are working hard, exercising well and completing the
challenges set for them. We really miss the girls and it is good to see what
they have been up to at home. We hope all our families are safe and well!
Our Yellow ribbon remains outside school as a symbol of hope that we will
all be together again soon! You are all in our thoughts and prayers!

As part of working towards a Child Friendly Redbridge (CFR), a Youth Panel has been set up which consists
of 4 young CFR Champions and 1 CFR Ambassador from each secondary school in Redbridge. Faiza Shakeel
was elected as the Ambassador for Ursuline. I have asked her to write a brief paragraph on what she has
been doing with the role…
‘Due to current circumstances Me and other CFR ambassadors from other schools have been in contact
using virtual meetings to discuss and debate about a range of different topics. We have been given badges
by UNICEF to use to improve schools and Redbridge in general e.g: health care, culture, education, mental
health etc. Recently we have been looking at the health care badge, we want to know how Covid-19 has
impacted the young people.
This is why we have made a survey so we can try to reach out to as many people and make your opinions
heard, the information you share in this survey will be viewed by Council Officers within the London
Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and Public Health. A report will be written
using only the replies to the questions. https://engagement.redbridge.gov.uk/childrens/covid-19-young-

DT New Thank you for your continued effort, engaging with your online lessons and also making
time try out activities from the Stemette’s website. We couldn’t help but share this lovely STEM project completed by Ayesha Khan, 8J with you this week.
Well done!
Ayesha’s summary about the project - This is my STEM project which is a garden filled with mechanical
props. My garden is all hand-crafted. I have added little details which brings my garden to life! In my work, I
have used many materials, some of which are recycled, which I found at home. Some of the materials are
tissue paper, felt, cardboard paper, rocks, paper and card. I have also used a range of colours for my garden
to make it stand out. I have added a tree house, a swing, the pool, some flowers and a bench which is all
mechanical (they all have moving parts). My project includes ideas which have been brought to life.
My garden has been made out of simple materials which were easy to interpret. In my work, I have tried to
include little details make the garden look more interesting. My garden initially has started off as nothing
but then, made its way to look this interesting with the contrast in colour from the different materials I used!
6
The fence (that I made to hold all the structure in place) was made out of cardboard as this was the strongest
material that I could find. Overall, my project was well planned and executed, and just how I wanted it to be.
Our Special mentions for exemplar work and effort for this week are as follows.
Year 7 – Amna Ali, Maryam Bint Imran, Fizza Rasool and Shizah Usman.
Year 8 – Ayesha Khan, Karen Mungo and Rosie Harwood

Matthew: 11. 28
The Ursuline Academy Ilford is working to raise awareness of Mental Health issues, particularly amongst
young people. Mental Health and Wellbeing being particular interests of mine, I will be regularly sharing in
our Newsletter articles or news reports which I think are particularly relevant to our school community,
students, parents and staff. I will address a different mental health-related topic every month.

June Theme: Wellbeing after Lockdown
As most UK schools have reopened their doors to more of their pupils, this month we will be looking at
how the pandemic has affected today’s children and how parents can best support them. This week we
have selected this article from the Mirror:

Six mental health flags parents should look out for as children go back to school
The UK's coronavirus lockdown has put increased pressure on families and the return to school may cause anxiety for some pupils after months away, says Dr Chitsabesan of NHS England
A top NHS doctor has issued a warning to parents whose children are returning to school as the coronavirus lockdown is eased from Monday. Dr Prathiba Chitsabesan has urged families to monitor pupils for any signs of anxiety, distress or low mood.
She said the Covid-19 lockdown put increased pressure on many families as they were told to keep their children away from their friends to curb the spread of the virus.
But the return to school may cause anxiety for some pupils after months away, warned Dr Chitsabesan, NHS England’s top doctor for children and young people’s mental health.
Those who would like to return but remain stuck at home could feel left out or isolated, she added.

13
Dr Chitsabesan said: “Children and young people may be experiencing a variety of feelings in response to the coronavirus pandemic, including anxiety, distress and low mood, and it is important to understand that these are normal responses to an abnormal situation. “The NHS offers a large amount of mental health support for children and young people, and if a child needs urgent mental health support or advice, check nhs.uk for services in your area, including 24/7 crisis support.” NHS England said parents can take simple steps to help their sons or daughters who might be struggling to deal with the loneliness and uncertainty of lockdown or fears about returning to school.
It has told parents what to look out for and what steps they can take to look after their child’s mental health.
The advice is from clinicians and also based on first-hand experience from patients and parents.
Signs that parents should look out for include: - You might find they are more upset or find it hard to manage their emotions
- They may appear anxious or distressed
- Increasing trouble with sleeping and eating
- Appearing low in mood, withdrawn or tearful
- Reporting worried or negative thoughts about themselves or their future
- For younger children, there may be more bed wettinge schools that are reopening
If a parent is worried about their child’s mental health, they can help by:
- Making time to talk to your child
- Allow your child to talk about their feelings
- Try to understand their problems and provide reassurance that you have heard them and are there to help
- Help your child do positive activities
- Try to keep a routine over the next few weeks
14
- Look after your own mental health
Parents should contact NHS 111 online or a GP immediately if they notice any physical injuries on a child, such as deep cuts or burns, said NHS England.
Parents drop off children at Queen's Hill Primary School, Costessey, Norfolk (Image: PA)
Pupils arrive at Beeston Primary School in Leeds, West Yorkshire (Image: Dan Rowlands / SWNS.com) They can also turn to Rise Above, a website created with young people, and MindEd, a free educational resource for parents and professionals working with children, for help.
Claire Murdoch, NHS England's national mental health director, said: “We know that children and young people’s lives have been disrupted during these uncertain times, and some may be suffering from anxiety as schools reopen.
“The NHS is open for business as usual and has adapted to the coronavirus crisis through offering flexible options including phone and video consultations and online support.
Tom Madders, campaigns director at YoungMinds, added: "School can provide routine, structure and a chance for children to connect and learn, which can all be positive for mental health - but for some children, returning will be a confusing and overwhelming experience, especially if the environment feels different to how it was before.
"Some children who aren't yet returning to school may also be struggling with social isolation or uncertainty about what the future holds."
Mental Health Minister Nadine Dorries said: “As many children start to return to school, it’s vital we continue to give them the support they need to maintain their mental health and wellbeing and deal with any feelings of uncertainty or worry they may be experiencing
15
“The NHS remains there for those who need it and our mental health services are adapting to best support families and children as we all get used to these changes in routine.
"We also recently provided over £9 million to leading mental health charities to help them expand and reach those most in need.
“I urge any families and children in need of guidance and advice, or crisis support to contact their GP or visit the NHS website.

An online, fully funded Summer School for students in Year 12 keen to learn more about careers in
property and network with some of the key employers in the industry.
Every day we are influenced by the built environment around us – shops, offices, industrial buildings,
houses and the surrounding countryside all have an impact on the way we live. Did you ever wonder how
these properties are developed, whether the buildings going up in our cities are sustainable or how much
they are worth? The Pathways to Property Online Summer School allows students the chance to explore
the property industry in more depth. With such a huge variety of roles, from a building surveyor or town
planner to a sustainability consultant or financial analyst, there is a role to suit any skillset or personality.

Some words from our CEO & Co-Founder, Head
Stemette Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE:
Black Lives Matter. The tragic & unnecessary deaths of George
Floyd and Breonna Taylor are closely linked with the mission and
ambition of Stemettes. Sadly, the deaths weren't an anomaly to
us.
The necessary work we do to open up the technical world to the
underrepresented includes connecting the technical fields to Black
girls and Black families. We are about creating real opportunities &
real change to the status quo, on our terms.
We have always been proud of our intersectional approach and
know that the young people we work with get to see that people
'like them' are not only working in STEM but also thriving. We
create spaces where their perspectives are valued and
celebrated.
Building an anti-racist society will take actions on all fronts. You will
have seen many lists of actions, resources, books, movies and TV
shows across social media in the last week or so. Let us add to

Lucilla Schoolwear values each and every one of the schools we supply uniform for and are
committed to try and make the purchasing of uniform as safe as we possibly can and have your
students attend school in the official school uniform.
We plan to re-open on 15th June (subject to government guidelines) and we are currently open for
online delivery and click and collect orders only.
We will be following government guidelines and therefore are making changes to our premises and
adding further options in the following way:
o Creating a safe system for customers to move around the store
o The option for parents and student at the entrance to use hand sanitiser
o The creation of serving bays to allow social distancing
o The restriction of allowing 1 parent, 1 student to enter the premises. (if there is an obvious reason
for more than 1 parent or student then this will be catered for)
o As numbers will be restricted entering our premises at any one time there will have to be a queuing
system at peak times outside our shop
o To provide a click and collect service where customer buys online & collects (We will have a separate
queue for this)
o It will be essential to encourage existing parents to use the click and collect service to reduce
numbers that will attend our premises especially the nearer we get to back to school in September
o We are in the process of improving our size guides on the website
o We have a new appointment system which can be booked through our website, please encourage
your parents to book an appointment as early as possible
o We will be extending our opening hours as we progress towards the back to school season
o There will be no opportunity to use any of our fitting rooms
o Items that are returned to us will be quarantined or steam cleaned until they are considered safe to
be re sold
Where we would like your help is in advising your parents of the proposed changes by E mail. Our website
continually be updated with the current situation.
As previously mentioned, we are committed to try and serve the school and your parents in a safe and sensible way
and will do everything we can to make this happen and provide the uniform of the school. We will also keep you
informed of any changes that may have to happen if matters change.
We would be so grateful if you could help us regarding the matter of advising parents/carers. If you have any further
queries, please do not hesitate to call.
Many thanks to you all.
