Publisher’s Corner The greatest gift you can offer is a healthy, whole youJournaling has always been a part of my life, as far as I remember. Most of whatis written stays in the journals, never to be seen again. Uncharacteristically, thismorning I read an entry written only 6 days ago. “...doing things is not what creates us into something. That we already are something is what allows us to create.” The simple profundity of that statement struck me deeply this morning, making me question why I hadn’t written a book proposal based on it. Not onlyhad I not written a proposal, or a short article, I hadn’t even remembered it.

That entry was still in my mind as I arrived at the barn. It was 15 degrees and thesun was starting to go down. Instead of interrupting the lesson taking place in theindoor, I went for a walk with Tom in his 5-acre paddock. I don’t use a halter onTom for these walks, nor do I ask him to join me. He has total freedom to comeor not. While at times Tom stops to do something of interest to him and I keepmoving, he consistently follows. It wasn’t always like this. In my early days, Iunderstood riding to be the primary way humans and horses interacted. In addition, it was the human who had to take control of the time together. While Iam good at presenting an outline, it goes against my nature to enforce an agenda, ask anyone that attends the meetings I facilitate. Regardless, I wanted to provemyself to the horse people around me, so I rejected my essence and requiredmyself to be the “boss” of the horses I rode. At the time, it didn’t occur to me thatthe best leaders are those who by being true to themselves, inspire us to do thesame. Not by “bossing” us around, but by giving us confidence in ourselves. When Tom entered my life, I knew in my heart I wanted to create a relationshipthat was different than the examples presented. My soul wanted to meet the horsesoul to soul. Through the years, it has ultimately been a letting go over and overof falseness and pretense.

Something that came up in my journal while I was going through this shift, was afear that Tom would not choose me if given a choice. Looking back, I understandthat in all my studying of others, I was searching for a foolproof way to avoidbeing deserted. Eventually, I stopped looking to human ‘trainers’ and began toobserve how the horses spent time when people weren’t around. I found that theydon’t do much more than simply stand near to one another, eating, playing, walking or grooming each other. While horses gravitate towards companionship through simply being together, people often try to create bondswith horses by asking them to do things. Most of our domesticated animals aregroup-orientated. Dogs run in packs. Horses move in herds. They understandbelonging in a primal way humans are currently lacking. It dawned on me, thathorses have a lot more to teach humans than to learn from them. With that, it feltimportant to reach Tom through a mutual affection while doing seemingly nothing together. At first, there were times when my fear was actualized and hewould wander away. I had read techniques to address this, yet again I chose tohandle it by examining what I was being while with him, rather than alter what Iwas doing. When the worry and sadness of not being chosen came up, I simplysat with the feelings—not trying to fix Tom’s response or myself. The experiencewas revealing and showed me where my beliefs and vulnerabilities collided, whichgave me an opportunity to heal on many levels. With time and the continuedfreedom to leave, Tom now chooses my company. For his own reasons, I will not

speculate what they are, I am the one with whom he feels asense of belonging. This puts my heart, soul and nature atease. My ribbons are won every day when Tom meets me atthe gate—literally and symbolically. Does that make me sentimental? Perhaps, and I’m at peace with that.

Thinking about the shift in how I interact with Tom, andhorses in general, I see it as a kind of hero’s journey. JosephCampbell, who wrote a lot about the “hero’s journey” suggested that we each follow our bliss. There is a tendencyto resist doing so, calling it selfish or waiting for better circumstances. It seems what we are truly avoiding is not thebliss, but the pure transformation our ego goes through whenwe follow our soul’s calling. For me, part of this journeyhappened through interacting with Tom. My enjoyment inhim made it worth going through the discomfort that cameup. In hindsight, it seems I was not only creating a friendship;I was also embracing a new way of being.

With social media, we hear things in sound bites. In theseoften inspiring snippets, things seem black and white, whilecertain feelings should be banished from life—fear, anger andhurt for instance. Yet, grey seems more often true and all feelings are valuable when we have healthy relationships tothem. My fear that I wouldn’t be Tom’s chosen one may seemfoolish, but it told me there was something I needed to heal.Had I instantly tried to fix myself or banish the feeling ratherthan just acknowledge its existence, I would not have movedthrough it. In addition, going deeper, I understood fear inhabited me in other areas as well, regardless of the fact thatI rarely felt scared. No emotion is bad, neither are they alwaysobvious. Fear for instance, also presents as stagnancy, avoidance, keeping up appearances, or adhering to techniques that goagainst one’s nature. Where fear is felt, are places it is closeto the surface, while it is in the hidden depths it affects behavior unknowingly. Although not infallible, writing in ajournal is my way of uncovering those disguised places.

Which brings me back to last week’s entry; “...doing things isnot what creates us into something. That we already are something is what allows us to create.” This can most fully beembraced once we are stripped down to our essence. Why?Because our lives become genuine and meaningful when theyare less about proving our worth and more about experiencingthe creative forcethat moves each ofus in our ownway. Our value isalready evidencedby the gift ofbreath. May thatbe enough for youto find, honor andbe true to yourpersonal nature.

In harmony,

“Ihave always been a baker, but I started baking for otherslast year,” Nancy Dunn, owner of Northern WoodsBakery, said. “When I turned 50 years old, three years

ago, I really started to pay more attention to the food I eat, theadditives and GMO issue. I wanted to offer people something dif-ferent than what many local bakeries are offering.”

Northern Woods Bakery uses local and organic ingredients as muchas possible, and always uses all natural. “The butter is organic, theeggs are from my own chickens at home. The cream is from localfarms, everything is from as close to the source as possible,” sheexplains. “The things I can’t get locally, like the flour, I get from rep-utable sources such as King Arthur up in Vermont.”

Nancy Dunn started on this quest when she spoke to a person whoworked in a local bakery. When ordering a cake, she had been toldthat this bakery baked from scratch, but an employee told her thatthey used “big box mixes that we put in the mixers.” When shecalled to ask, she was finally told that they do use mixes, and thatthey also use shortening with trans fat in their icings to keep themstable in hot weather. “I was stunned,” she said. “to find out theyuse box mixes for their cakes and use Crisco in their icings. It was

very upsetting. Box mixes have propylene glycol in them, an ingre-dient in antifreeze. The glycol is sweet and also keeps the starchfrom crystallizing, so box mix cakes have a good crumb. I get mygreat texture from reverse mixing, so the eggs are not overbeatenand the cake is light and fluffy. I never use Crisco in my butter-cream, although many other bakeries have openly told me that theydo. I make a Swiss Meringue buttercream, which is amazingly deli-cious, all natural, and very stable unless you are going to let yourwedding cake or party cake sit outside in the 90 degree sun for fivehours!! You don’t need shortening for a stable icing!”

“Many people assume they are getting a scratch cake from freshingredients when buying from a bakery.“ Many of these cakeslook lovely, but the ingredients and quality don’t match theappearance. My cakes taste great and look great, too!”

Northern Woods Bakery offers wedding cakes and cakes for allother occasions. She offers nut free cakes and is working ongluten-free choices as well. “I am testing some of the rice floursin my cakes. They are good for smaller cakes, but I still need totweak them for larger cakes. Stay tuned!”

“My most popular flavor is a yellow cake, vanilla flavor. I just dida three tier carrot cake with all natural cheesecream frosting. Thebride was over the top and the guests all raved that it was the firstwedding cake they actually ate! I get a lot of satisfaction out ofmaking something beautiful that has fresh, all natural ingredients init, baking the way my grandmother baked 50 years ago.”

Ghee is clarifiedbutter-the butteris heated and

milk solids (proteins)have been removed. Theprotein casein found indairy is difficult formany people to digest.Casein is a large foreignprotein that can passthrough the human guteasily, contributing towhat is known as“leaky” or permeablegut. When these pro-

teins pass through the gut, they can contribute to inflammatoryconditions in the body.

Many people think they cannot digest the lactose in dairy, butmay in fact actually be reacting to the protein casein. Because thecasein is removed from ghee, ghee is much easier for many todigest than butter. Ghee is a stable, healthy, saturated fat.Saturated fats are solid at room temperature. Contrary to whatyou’ve probably heard in the past, these are the very beneficialfats for our body! Saturated fats are fully saturated with hydro-gen bonds (NOT to be confused with hydrogenated oils).Saturated fats are stable, and do not easily oxidize when heated(break down) or go rancid. These can be heated to higher tem-peratures, unlike liquid vegetable oils that have been highlyprocessed.

Ghee is very beneficial to the body. The fatty acids insulatemyelin in the brain (memory, mood stability, alertness), strength-en the immune system and help to regulate hormones for normalhormone function. Ghee contains short-chain fatty acids as well.Short-chained fatty acids are easily metabolized by the body. What this means is that the body can digest and utilize these fattyacids efficiently, reaping benefits to the body.

Ghee contains omega 3 and omega 9 fatty acids, along withVitamins A, D, E, and K. Grass-fed or pastured ghee is a veryhigh source of CLA, aka conjugated linoleic acids. CLA is apotent cancer fighter. The digestive systems of grass-fed rumi-nants produce CLA. CLA is associated with superior hearthealth, suppression of tumors, reduced belly fat and overallincreased fat loss. Pasture raised (grass-fed) cows lead to dairy

CLA levels 3-5 times that of grain-fed cattle! Always look forgrass-fed butter if you are making your own ghee, or grass-fedghee if you are buying it. Ghee is excellent for nerve conductionand insulation of the brain. Ghee is great for skin, eyes, andjoints-it is rich with antioxidants and boosts the immune system.Ghee is high in butyric acid which has anti-viral properties andmay inhibit tumor growth.

How do you use ghee? Ghee is great for all your cooking andbaking needs. It adds amazing flavor to sauteed or roasted veg-gies! You can melt it and bake with it. You can serve it on top ofpotatoes just like butter. Grass-fed ghee is an all around healthysuper food that adds superior flavor and healthy benefits to allyour dishes!

12 Healing Springs I #78 February—March, 2015

by Wendy Ball

By now most of us have either forgotten or given up on most ofour New Year resolutions for 2015. It is a ritual we go through, knowing, even as we make that list, that we will succumb to

the habitual behaviors we say we want to change. We know that some-thing more is needed in order to make the changes we say we want tomake in our lives though what it is continues to confound us.

Many of us can also point to a time in our lives when we found thestrength to commit to something we wanted very much and the abil-ity to follow through. What does that teach us? Why are we able to tomanifest what we want sometimes and not others. What is the secret?

I believe that manifesting the things we want involves a combina-tion of things: 1. clear vision or intent, 2. timing, 3. structure, and4. one step at a time follow-through.

Clear Vision. The importance of vision is something most of us have beenexposed to one way and another, whether it has been through theNew Thought movement, New Age writing, coaching of variouskinds... We have made vision boards, collages, journaled, dialogued, programmed crystals and our dreams. There is no disputing thatclear vision is an essential ingredient of manifesting what we want.Elder care staff in England discovered that having residents create aclear vision of when and how they took their medication, seeingthemselves stop whatever they are doing at a certain time of day, going to where their medication is kept, getting a glass of water, etc.,walking themselves through the process and talking it out loud tosomeone, greatly increased their chances of remembering to taketheir medication. We need to ask the question: What do I want, orneed? What is important to me? We need to use whatever means willhelp us arrive at a clear answer whether it is through writing or talk-ing to someone, or whatever works to become clear. Fleshing out ourvision can involve a process of questioning, research, reflection, dia-logue, until we can write or state a clear intent or goal. Sometimes itcomes out of an exploration of what is missing or what is wrong withones current circumstances. Exploring what's wrong can be a valu-able step in defining what it is we want or need.

Timing. There are times when it is easier to accomplish things. We all havecycles, life cycles, annual cycles, monthly and daily cycles. Makeuse of energy and relative ease to focus when it is there and go easyon yourself when it is not there. Many of us know what is our besttime of day for certain kinds of activity. This is valuable self-knowledge. 2015 is the year of the goat in Chinese astrology. I lovewhat Teri Uktena, Akashic reader and teacher, has to say about this:"Goat is not only industrious but methodical. If you don't knowhow that works, look at one or two as they denude a landscape ofanything edible. It's why they are used as an ecofriendly way toremove blackberries and other stubborn plants from large areas. They will start in one place and in an ever widening circle get thejob done one mouthful at a time." This year we have goat energyon our side. It is a good year to manifest what you want..

Structure. Some of us love structure; some of us hate it. It took me manyyears to realize that structure is my friend. Structure is theboundary of a page of paper, or a deadline. Saying: “I want to putmy house on the market by....,” provides structure. One instant-ly begins to think about everything that needs to be done beforethis can happen. I like the way Julie Morgenstern talks aboutorganizing time: “A day is like a closet; there is only so muchyou can put in it.” She coaches people to manifest what is ofmost value to them by using an agenda and assigning a time toeverything beginning with what is most important to you.

One Step At A Time Folllow-Through.One of the things I appreciated most from my years as a domes-tic violence counselor was the guideline for treatment planningused at the agency I worked in. This structure helped people whohad come to feel completely helpless to create safe and produc-tive lives. It began with ‘Objective.’ This is like a mission state-ment, e.g.: I want to realize Peace in my life. Next was ‘Goals,’three of them, related to the overall mission statement. An exam-ple might be: I want to improve how I deal with conflict in my

marriage. Each goal had ‘steps.’ Examples might be: 1. I willread the book Difficult Conversations by Small et al within thenext 3 months. 2. I will practice noticing when I have been trig-gered into a reaction and take time out. 3. I will spend time atleast once per week with my partner doing something we bothenjoy. From overall intention to small steps. Steps are what wecan commit to easily and accomplish without feeling over-whelmed. Steps are what we can acknowledge ourselves for atthe end of the day and feel good in a measure of progress.

This is how a house is built. This is how a garden is planted andreaped. This is how our best life is realized. Of course, there arethe things that happen in life over which we have no control. Thesurrender and skills that are needed to gracefully weather thatover which we have no control is part of the overall picture of alife well lived, along with choosing where we can, changingwhat we can, and finding ways to do what we can.

Finally, to manifest your best life it helps to know that youdeserve it. It helps to know that no matter what you do or don'tmanifest you are valuable. You deserve unconditional love andacceptance because you exist and for no other reason.

If you cannot bring yourself to act on an intention, consider thepossibility that it is not the right intention for you. If it is some-thing that is indisputably needed, than seek assistance to exam-ine and move beyond the blocks. Performers in all areas of lifeuse expert assistance to meet their goals. You deserve nothingless.

A good manifestation practice: spend some small amount of timedoing something you love every day, and notice how you expe-rience yourself during the doing. It is a good warm-up.

As the term ‘holistic health’ implies, the health of everypart of our body is truly connected to every other part. Most people today have been exposed to this idea, and,

often as a result of personal experience or conviction, recognizeits truth both rationally and intuitively. Despite this logic andsense, though, and especially in our American medical system, there still tends to exist a disconnect between the health of thebody and the health of the mouth and jaw. Nonetheless, in anytruly holistic approach to the body’s health, the health of themouth and jaw must necessarily be considered to be affected byand to affect the whole body’s health. Indeed, the mouth andjaws are particularly important areas of the body, because theyaffect our health on both structural and physiological (includingnutritional) levels. Thus our dental health is intimately relatedto our overall health. The focus of this article is the structuralaspects of dental health.

Internally, we are connectedfrom head-to-toe through thefascia covering our organsand muscles. Imagine yourbody as a marionette withstrings through your arms, legs, and torso, connecting toyour head. A strain or distor-tion of the skull during birth, associated with strains of theconnective tissue that envelopthe body, can cause self-per-

petuating imbalances that continue throughout life. As a childdevelops, these imbalances can manifest as distortions of thejaw, with crowding or misalignment of the teeth, and can be seenin the posture of the child, as well as in the asymmetry of thechild’s face. In an adult, these strains can express themselves indifferent ways, often causing pain and seemingly unrelatedsymptoms. Other factors that can contribute to structural distor-tions are genetics and malnutrition (as demonstrated by Dr.Weston Price).

Potential health effects of cranial distortions include:headaches, chronic neck or back pain (including chiropracticadjustments that “don’t hold”), visual problems, scoliosis, diges-tive problems, TMJ dysfunction, and sinus/airway/breathingproblems. Of course, we also need only imagine how any phys-ical distortion and its concurrent discomfort can lead to behav-ioral changes or affect emotions or moods, whether in infants,

children, or adults. In the case of the chronic pain patient, whomay have had a history of trauma, we recognize that the body canmaintain for years patterns of strain that occurred at the time ofinjury. When the patient has involvement of the jaws, it is impor-tant for the bite to be corrected, along with those distortions with-in the body to be released through manual medicine, such asosteopathy, cranial-sacral therapy, myo-fascial release or special-ized forms of chiropractic care.

Beginning around three decades ago, pioneering dentists interest-ed in extending to orthodontics the then-newly evolving holistichealth paradigm affecting general dentistry, studied with osteo-pathic physicians and learned how to evaluate the distortions ofthe skull from a whole-body perspective. They then correlateddifferent orthodontic problems with specific cranial distortions, and developed orthodontic techniques and appliances that use theteeth as ‘handles’ to correct those distortions. This confluence ofscientific knowledge can produce orthodontic corrections that willbe in harmony with the surrounding musculoskeletal system andthat can help create a body that is in structural balance, for a life-time of good health and good feeling.

We do indeed have one body that is inter-connected, and for opti-mal health, we are best served by viewing the mouth and jaws asintegral parts of the whole, and as having a powerful influence onthe state of overall health and well-being.

In our Functional Medicine Pharmacy practice, we see manypatients who are seeking to regain optimal health. Often we’reasked about the benefits of doing a detox, so I thought this

would be a good opportunity to give a quick overview about theprogram that we use and recommend.

As I mentioned, there is a lot of talk about detoxes wherever youlook, and for good reason. Today, we are all exposed to chemicalsin the foods we eat, the air we breathe, and the water we drink. Many common complaints to practitioners, such as mental andphysical fatigue, may be signs of environmental overload.Supporting the body’s natural metabolic detoxification processmay be beneficial.

It’s important to remember that not all detoxification programs arescience-based, and some may deplete the body of vital nutrientsand energy to support the natural elimination process. The DetoxProgram that we recommend and use is designed around helpingthe liver – your body’s main detoxification organ – eliminate tox-ins efficiently and effectively. This requires important vitamins, minerals, and amino acids from protein in order to work properly.

Some people are more “toxic” than others, whether it’s from envi-ronmental toxins or from toxins that have built up based on thefood that they’ve been consuming. In either case, we typicallylike to have patients fill out a Metabolic Detox questionnaire, which will help determine whether a shorter 10-Day or a longer28-Day Detox is recommended.

The Detox Program we use follows a Simple 3 – Step Protocolthat involves eating real food from day one, and you’re able to eatas much as you want. Pretty much all fruits and vegetables, nuts, chicken, turkey, lamb, fish, spices, healthy fats and legumes areon the list. There are no caloric restrictions, so you should neverbe hungry.

Step 1is the Initial Clearing Phase. You’ll start to eliminate certain foodsfrom your diet that may be potential

toxins while gradually increasing the nutritional supplementation.

Step 2is the Metabolic Detoxification

Phase. On these days, you’ll only beeating from a select variety of low

allergy-potential foods but will be increasing your intake of thenutritional supplementation provided with the program.

Step 3is the Reintroduction Phase. Inthis stage you’ll slowly reintroducefoods back into your diet, paying

attention to any reactions you may have as you reintroduce foods.

As you go through the program, you’re encouraged you to drinkplenty of water, and eat plenty of food. Remember, this isn’t aweight loss program, and you shouldn’t be hungry, so eat as muchof the allowed foods as you like!

That being said, doing an effective metabolic detoxification doesrequire a fairly high level of commitment. I tell patients that theyneed to be mentally, spiritually, and physically ready beforebeginning. Starting and stopping before completion is not onlycostly financially, it also defeats the purpose of the program, which is to allow your body time to get “caught up” with pro-cessing and eliminating toxins from your body.

Remember, your body wants to be healthy. Oftentimes individu-als block their body’s ability to be healthy by putting up barriersthrough the food and lifestyles choices they make. When youremove those barriers, your body will reward you with optimalhealth!

Finally, remember to check with your health care practitionerbefore starting any detox program to make sure it’s safe for you.

Alittle knowledge can be counter-productive. Popular buzzabout concepts like attraction that are absorbed but not fullyunderstood can stand in the way of bringing true joy into

your life. Before you give up on manifesting your goals, considerwhy you are not attracting what you thought you wanted.

Before you can harness the energy of various laws of attraction afew basic concepts must be understood. One is synchronicity. Thisis a way of expressing that in any given moment you are deliveredexactly what you need for whatever purpose you need it. It is uni-versal and always correct. That time the snack machine ate my lastdollar and refused to spit out the junk food I was hoping for was noaccident. It was a direct response to my previous rumination overunhealthy food choices. If we stop wasting time fighting againstmomentary disruptions and instead awaken to opportunities to rec-ognize that each moment is giving precisely what we ask for, lifeflows more like a stream and less like a hurricane enraged sea.Synchronicity often occurs through personal interactions. Recentlywhile finishing a psychic reading event at Café NOLA inSchenectady, I was in a conversation with one of the owners. As wediscussed upcoming workshops and events, a woman at a nearbytable asked if I was the psychic reader, and when I affirmed that Iwas she said “I wanted to schedule to meet with you!” It turns outshe was unable to schedule electronically and this seeminglychance encounter solved that. To add further irony, one of the sub-jects the owner of the restaurant and I had been discussing was syn-chronicity in planning and marketing these events! To the unen-lightened these are mere “coincidences” but to use this term robsthe phenomenon of what it truly is- a gift from the universe.

Another overlooked key is intention. This is where many peoplestray in their practices of visualization or attraction. If on a surfacelevel I want to be in a happy, harmonious relationship, but on adeeper level my intention is to always be in control and not have tocompromise with others, I am sacrificing my conscious desire- therelationship- for my subconscious intention. I can’t have both.Similarly if I desire success but fear the ensuing responsibility suchsuccess would bring, my intention on a deep emotional level is notmatching what I am stating my cognitive “intention” to be.Therefore I am not really working out of my deepest intention, I ammerely making a wish with no emotional backing. Fear does a lotto sabotage this process. Fear of success, fear of failure, fear of notdeserving a goal and so on. In order to effectively use the processof intention, it is important to hold a desired goal in a way thatbecomes multidimensional (you can see, touch, taste, smell, hearwhen you imagine it) and in addition it is important that this desiredoutcome far outweigh any fears or hang ups that would stand in theway of you reaching out and grabbing any opportunities that wouldlink you with your desired outcome. What happens if you have amental intention without working on surpassing the emotional hangups that stand in the way? You will repeatedly be given opportuni-ties to reach out and claim your goal, but will not see them. If youdo see them, you will judge them, back peddling and talking yourway out of taking the necessary risks required to make your inten-tion a reality. Intention is key and must come from an emotionally

charged source, otherwise fear, doubt and insecurity are liable tosabotage attainment of your goal.

In order to successfully manifest what you desire, it is essential thatyou face and come to terms with any remaining ambivalence.Ambivalence is the neutral territory that keeps one foot in the futureand another stuck in the past. In Tarot it is portrayed through thearchetype of the Chariot. Like being unclear in your intention, being ambivalent casts a shadow over progress. When we areambivalent we have no commitment to moving forward and takingrisk. To some extent present circumstances, however painful, arealso deemed useful on some subconscious level. This occurs fre-quently when exploring relationships. We identify feeling unhappyor stuck, but it is often easier to blame the other person or circum-stances rather than owning what aspects of ourselves are allowingus to remain captive in a process. In order to overcome ambiva-lence, another important principle of manifestation must be under-stood; faith. In order to truly accept and welcome change on anylevel, we must first have a complete, deeply-rooted belief thatchange can and will occur for our best interest. While it is difficultto have faith in the unseen, and change involves transformation intothat which can not be presently seen, faith is a necessary ingredient.Through faith, we are allowing a future-in-progress which is cur-rently manifesting to work out better than could have been expect-ed. Most of us, become accustomed to not expecting anything morethan our last experience proved possible. This may be a safe way togo, as it shields us from disappointment, yet it is extremely limit-ing. After all, how can I strive for something if I really don’t havefaith in anything better than what life has already shown me?

In addition, to successfully manifest it is important to draw on inter-nal reserves of personal power. Consider how much more success-ful you will be when you harness your natural gifts and use thesestrengths to materialize your heart’s desire. For women, all toooften their inner strength is confined or shut down altogether bycultural messages that invalidate the source of women’s power andwisdom. There are distinct and separate ways such powerful per-sonal energies express themselves. When we try too hard to mani-fest from a place outside of our natural seat of power the results areseldom lasting.

If you are truly ready to attract great relationships, career, family, orany personal passion, align yourself with the Universe’s time (syn-chronicity). Be open to random encounters that bring big opportuni-ties, sometimes in disguise. Also, be clear in your intent. Yes thatmeans you can no longer hide behind the excuse-making wall ofambivalence and half steps. Finally, be willing to emphasize yourpower, your strengths and gifts.

Imagine a world where you see your knee pain for what it is:a signal to do a quick, effective exercise to reduce or elimi-nate it, in just a few minutes. Where back, shoulder, neck

pain… all succumb to this powerful weapon against prematureaging that you can use on the spot. And even better, weaknessand stiffness disappear. You’ve entered the Ki-Hara ResistanceStretching zone.

Most muscle and joint pain are the result of muscle imbalances, caused by repetitive movements, inactivity or poor posture.Your knee pain, for example, may well be caused by excessivesitting. Holding the knee bent conditions tension into the lowerhamstring, which is opposed by the quad. The quad, whose jobis to straighten the knee, is being trained to remain stretched. Now when you get up, the quad tries to shorten, but you’ve com-

promised it. And that weakness becomes PAIN! Even worse, the quad/ hamstring imbalance is tugging on the knee joint ,twisting it. Now you have joint wear, too.

I know all about this, because this is how I discovered Ki-HaraResistance Stretching. My chronic pain led me to this all-in-onefitness and functionality tool, and now I’m pain and drug free.In Ki-Hara, you tense a muscle group and then use other musclesto stretch it while it resists. You can dismantle tension andaccomplish myofascial release through the full range of motion.By adding resistance to your stretching routine, you increase itssafety and effectiveness while turning it into an all-in-one fitnesssystem that combines flexibility, cardio and strength trainingwhile maximizing the return on your time and effort, and keep-ing the demand appropriate to your fitness level.

The resistance stabilizes the joints and protects the muscles fromoverstretching or tearing, all while safely working the musclegroup at a high level, even higher (if you choose) than normalstrength training. And that’s another benefit: you choose howhard and in what range you work.

Because one muscle group works against the other, your core getstronger as it stabilizes you (its primary purpose). And youstrength train the muscles doing the stretching, and even improvestrength in the stretched muscles, along with range of motion. The cardio happens when you move from one exercise to thenext, like circuit training. Ki-Hara uses 16 different stretches totarget your whole body, allowing you to find out where yourimbalances are; and as we’ve seen, imbalances are issues wait-ing to happen.

Plus, you stop wasting energy generating tension you don’t want. With Ki-Hara, you become friends with your body, giving itwhat it desperately needs. And your body will return the favor!

According to the Statistic Brain website’s New Year’sResolution Statistics page,(1) 45% of Americans make anew year’s resolution, with weight loss being in the num-

ber one position. Sadly, the overall success rate of achieving theend goal is only 8%.

Perhaps this is due to the fact that most people are focusing onthe final result rather than a commitment to a process whichincorporates a lifestyle change. In other words, diets don’t work, but changing dietary patterns can. For example, when it comes toweight loss, too many people are focused on calorie deprivationrather than feeding their body the nutrients it needs for fuel andto burn fat. An optimal weight is not achieved through caloriecounting alone. A calorie is not just a calorie. Food is informa-tion and your body’s blood sugar and inflammatory response iscompletely different for a jellybean verses a piece of broccoli.

Therefore, I want to help you focus on how to stay healthy thisupcoming spring. It may be too late for New Year’s, but you canstart a change anytime of year!

Tip One: Eat Real FoodEating whole, organic foods can positively affect your overallnutrient absorption and decrease the amount of inflammatorychemicals, pesticides, and GMOs in your body.

Tip Two: Move Your BodyExercise in a way that you enjoy. Most studies are now pointingto high-intensity training to burn fat, (9) but keep in mind somecaveats. Some may need more yoga or calming movement tomitigate high levels of inflammation and chronic stress.

Tip Three: SleepSleep effects inflammation, immune and brain health, and yes, appetite and satiety signaling. Lack of sleep could also affect your gutbugs, which also have an impact on all of the above mentioned aboutsleep. This means you may want to make it a habit to get to bed ear-lier. (If you need tips for better sleep, I have some on my website:http://dr-lobisco.com/goldilocks-the-three-bears-and-the-just-right-sleep-hacks/)

Tip Four: Stress LessStress can trump hormones and blood sugar regulation. Studiesshow that stress is linked to weight gain as well. (15) So, findsome time to do something you love and zone out from the stressevery day, even if just for a little while.

Tip Five: Find Out Who Your Friends AreMake friends with others who share your lifestyle changes.Positive social connections that support your goals can have aninfluence on your behavior and outcomes.

These are just five general suggestions. A good naturopathic or func-tional medicine doctor can also guide those who are “weight lossresistant” in other areas such as cleansing, food sensitivities, geneticinfluences, hormonal imbalances, and hidden causes of inflammation.

A Final Note: Sadly, this will be my last article for The HealingSprings Journal. I have recently taken a position out of state thatwill lead me away from this beautiful area. I will miss all my read-ers and clients; however, I feel it will further benefit my educationand allow me an opportunity to make a broader impact with clini-cians and clients alike. I wish you all a wonderful 2015 and thankyou for all you do in supporting integrative wellness in this region.

Warmest Regards, Dr. Sarah

The journal Molecular Nutrition and Food Research report-ed1 that sulforaphane, one of the primary phytochemicalsin broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables that helps

them prevent cancer, has been shown for the first time to selec-tively target and kill cancer cells while leaving normal prostatecells healthy and unaffected.

What was so amazing about this discovery is that it showed thatprostate tumor growth was slowed by a diet containing sul-foraphane and that “sulforaphane can target cancer cells throughmultiple chemopreventive mechanisms.” This study showed forthe first time that “sulforaphane selectively targets benign hyper-plasia cells and cancerous prostate cells while leaving the normalprostate cells unaffected." What this points to is the innate intel-ligence in plant compounds; no pharmaceutical or isolated neu-traceutical can do that.

In a similar study, brassica vegetables (Brussels sprouts, cab-bage, cauliflower and broccoli) were associated with decreasedrisk of colon cancers.

The researchers at Oregon State University found that sul-foraphane, which is found at fairly high levels in broccoli, cauli-flower and other cruciferous vegetables, is an inhibitor of an

enzyme that plays a role in whether certain genes are expressedor not, such as tumor suppressor genes.

This exciting news comes on the heels of other news about the cru-ciferous vegetables that show they are proven cancer-fighting foods.

One study found teaming up fresh broccoli with a spicy food thatcontains the enzyme myrosinase significantly enhances eachfood’s individual cancer-fighting power and ensures that absorp-tion takes place in the upper part of the digestive system whereyou'll get the maximum health benefit.

What are those foods? Radishes, cabbage, arugula, watercress, and Brussels sprouts all boost the benefits found in broccoli. Thestudy noted that you only receive these benefits if the vegetablesare eaten raw or lightly steamed. The more broccoli is cooked themore these fragile phytonutrients are damaged. If the broccoli ismush it’s useless nutritionally.

Do supplements that are made of isolated neutraceuticals havethe same effect in the body as whole foods? In another study thatlooked at supplements that just containing sulphoraphane with-out the other parts of the broccoli plant they discovered that itwas not well absorbed and, of course, not well utilized.

This points to the enormous value of eating whole foods, andwhen necessary, use only whole food supplements -- where careis taken to grow plants organically and preserve and use theentire plant in the supplement. When choosing a cruciferousproduct keep these things in mind.

The potential real whole foods and whole food supplements haveto nourish our bodies should now be readily apparent. They turn onour genes and amplify our ability to fight cancer. Maybe, as Dr.Servan-Schreiber, described in his book Anti-Cancer5 we don’thave cancer genes, but “fast food intolerant genes.” We build ananti-cancer biology with the food we eat three times a day.

Could you recommend 5 steps that wecould take toward bettering our healthand well being in the coming year?

Chiropractor; Lynn Allison1No smoking - causes systemic inflammation which seems the

cause of almost everything

2Feed your Microbiome - for every human cell, a healthy personhas 9 microorganisms living and supporting them, in their diges-

tive tract, on their skin, in their mouth- gained from vaginal birth, breastfeeding and contact with family initially, it is altered with eachround of antibiotics, overcleanliness, non exposure to animals anddirt, not enough plant fiber consumed, eating "dead" processed food.At least take a probiotic daily on an empty stomach, find naturallyfermented foods and eat 1 Tablespoon a day minimum. Healthymicrobiome improves immune response (less colds and flu),improve depression and anxiety, improve digestion and gut issues, decrease "Leaky Gut" syndrome and food sensitivities.

3Be Happy - we chose what to focus on in our life and how wewant to react to it- be a “glass half full” person

4Learn to cook - preparing most of your meals makes onemore aware of where their foods comes from, it is lower in

chemicals, unhealthy fats and salt and we tend to do less mind-less eating and a develop a sense of accomplishment and control

5Walk outside -connect with nature, breathe in clean air, stim-ulate your mind with noticing the little things, get sun on your

Homeopathy; Jerome Pindell1What comes to mind first is to stop, each and every day for at

least 5 minutes and consciously breath. Let your attention go toeach of your senses in any order, and note what each one is experi-encing. This will lead to awareness. Awareness is not being justattentive, but is more than that. It embraces the knowing beyond thelimitations of thoughts, the automatic responses to everyday stim-uli, and will transform your life to living fully in every experience.

2Give back. Each of us is blessed with an abundance of some-thing that someone else may be able to use. Whether it is a

smile, a dollar to a charitable organization, picking up a discard-ed scrap that belongs in a garbage pail 50 feet away, or saying'thank you'.

3Reflect on your day for a moment before going to sleep atnight. Be grateful for all of it.

4Listen. Listen to your heart, the part that knows what path isright, what action is correct, even what to eat. Do you visit an

alternative practitioner or a traditional one? They will offeradvice, but that is an educated opinion. Does your inner knowingresonate with what they are saying, or do you have doubts?Allow for uncertainty in your life, what do you have to lose byasking questions and listening carefully with discernment?Follow the heart’s knowing.

5Lastly, recognize that there is always choice, even when youcan’t imagine it or feel it. Opportunities are boundless to per-

ceive a slightly different response to every different situation thatpresents itself and is the difference between feeling good withyour decision, and not. Free will is a great gift that is too oftensquandered by giving your power away to a white coat, a collar,or a uniform. Respecting that any interaction with life has conse-quences, sometimes even illness, and acting accordingly withrespect is actually very liberating, and healthy.

Do these suggestions seem to answer the question? Only you canknow, and that knowing is your health and well being.

Homeopathy; Claudia Ascione1Begin each day with a sense of reverence and respect for your-

self. Appreciate your body, mind and soul as divine expres-sions. Affirm that this is so even if your thoughts and feelings dis-agree. Reinforce this deeper truth by embodying a calm spacious-ness throughout the day. Release emotional reactions as they ariseand replace them with this attitude. This will serve to enrich andexpand your divine core and will inspire others to tap into theirown compassionate nature.

2Make stillness a daily habit. Begin the day with 10 minutes ofsilent reflection. This simple practice can clear your mind and

set a good tone to help you meet the day's challenges. Over time, using stillness daily can powerfully transform the nature of yourmind/emotions so that serenity and clarity become natural, readi-ly accessible responses to life's opportunities.

3Accept whatever presents as challenges or perceived obstacleswithout judgment. Suspend negative reactions long enough to

allow their deeper purpose to be revealed. In this way, you'll beliving in the divine flow of life and appreciate the inherent valuein all experiences.

4Become mindful about what radiates from you. All thoughts, emotions and actions communicate a vibratory frequency that

affects everyone. Take ownership of your thoughts, feelings andactions. Experiment with transforming negative states through visu-alizations, affirmations, prayers or mantras. This will refresh andlighten your energetic field so that you become a blessing to many.

5End the day with gratitude. Before sleep give thanks for thebounty and grace in your life.

We are grateful for this opportunity to communicate withyou today. Communication is a telepathic experience. This does not mean you need special powers to com-

municate optimally, it means that you already have telepathic andextra sensory abilities that you have become so accustomed to, thatyou no longer believe them to be unique or extra-ordinary. Whensomeone speaks to you, or you speak to someone else, they arecommunicating with you through an energetic language. You seethat energy expressed through body language, and then spokenwords, and lastly through action. As communication leaves theenergetic bodies within you, it becomes a less and less refinedmode of expression. At its core, the highest truth is actually com-municated in its most subtle energetic state of personal feeling andthought. It is it’s most refined in this state, because it is a pure rep-resentation of your personal truth in that moment, even if it is abelief that is not in alignment with your highest good. As that ener-gy is communicated outwards through the various levels of expres-sion, there is increasing opportunity to alter your truth and manip-ulate the communication to create a specific outcome. To thedegree that that outcome is based on egoic expectations, is thedegree to which you will alter your truth as it rises through the lev-els of communication. When you can allow and accept your truth, the need to alter it will lessen. Most people can pick up on what isreally being said or expressed telepathically, or energetically, evenif they are not aware that that’s what is happening. It’s just as easyto accept words or actions from someone else at face value, espe-cially if those words and actions play into your egoic expectations.

You are a highly intuitive and energetically sensitive being, bynature. Many are awakening to an even deeper awareness andunderstanding of this subtle energetic language. This is due to themass awakening that is occurring on the planet. You will begin tobe able to sense things from other people and situations that arebeneath the surface of what is actually being said or acted upon. You will begin to be able to sense the authenticity, the intention, and perhaps even the motive behind why people are acting in a cer-tain way- even if it is being expressed very differently. This morerefined form of detection first becomes apparent to you throughsubtle feelings within you. Where you just know that what some-one is saying or doing does not quite line up with what they areactually feeling. People use words and action all of the time tocover up what they are actually experiencing in order to keep theirinnermost truth safe, because it feels to vulnerable to reveal.

It is not for you to use this keener understanding of energetic lan-guage to point out to another what you think their truth is, or thatthere is even a disconnect occurring. It is not a pedestal to form more

judgment from. This is a space for you to practice learning how youare sensing the world; to move into a place of observation about howthe world is communicating, and to refine how authentically you areexpressing your truth. Assume at this point that every person thatcrosses your path, in some way is an opportunity for you to establisha deeper understanding of yourself. Use your interactions with oth-ers as a way to observe your own authentic communicative skills. And be aware of how you alter your own truth as it is expressedthrough the levels of communication. Do not expect others toexpress themselves in the same way you are working on. They arewhere they are- honor their personal process. Simply do your best tobe your highest expression of communication while holding thoseyou communicate with in a state of gratitude and appreciation. Bybeing an example of your truest self, you will open up the space forothers to communicate with you in the most honest and loving way.

The subtleties that you are beginning to sense are an opening toways in which you can connect with and enhance your personaltruth and connection with your Higher Self. These subtleties arean energetic language that is unique to you. It is how Source, oryour Higher Self communicates with you. It is an intuitive lan-guage that keys you into your own higher knowing. The intuitivelanguage you develop within yourself, inspired by your connec-tion to your Higher Self, will allow you the space to open up toyour own deepest desires. It will shed light on the fears that keepyou stuck in your life, and it will gently guide you through thosefears with enlightened perspective and positive insight. The fearsare creations of the lower self, developed at points in your lifewhen survival was threatened. Now, with your growing intuitiveperspective, you will be able to look at beliefs and patterns fromthe perspective of Higher Self, where every situation and experi-ence has the potential of being lived with increasing grace andease. The choice is yours. Intuition and connection to Higher Selfwill open up doorways to empowering choices where transforma-tion is easily accessible. Are you ready to listen to that HigherPerspective and that subtler form of communication?
