The Gawler Foundation is a not for profit organisation committed to an integrated approach to health, healing and wellbeing that includes body, mind and spirit.

Our mission is to improve the recovery outcomes and quality of life for people challenged by cancer or multiple sclerosis and to teach lifestyle practices which assist the prevention of illness.

I’m excited to present this guidebook showcasing our healing and wellbeing retreats at the Yarra Valley Living Centre.

For over 30 years The Gawler Foundation has lead the way in a field now termed ‘lifestyle medicine’. These are the day-to-day lifestyle changes you can put in place to optimise the healing potential of your body, mind, emotions and spirit.

We’re here because there is a great need for what we do. With over 124,000 people being diagnosed with cancer in Australia this year1 and over half of cancer patients in Australia integrating various forms of complementary medicine into their healing plan2, people living with cancer continue to knock on our door.

This lifestyle approach is also helpful for people with MS and those wishing to prevent serious illness and live well every day.

While cancer is unfortunately not an uncommon diagnosis, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. What matters are

the decisions you make consciously and intentionally for yourself.

We are here to help with that journey. At The Gawler Foundation you will get hands on experience and access to quality education from caring, qualified and experienced professionals. You will learn how to take charge of the things that you can control, and the difference they can make to your quality of life and healing outcomes.

Please take a look, engage with us on Facebook and feel free to get in touch at [email protected] or call 1300 651 211.

Know that healing is possible and that this is not a journey you need to take alone.

Sincerely Wayne Nicholls CEO

Regular Meditation

Regular meditation helps to bring the body back to its natural state of balance - the ideal condition for the body to make the most of its inherent capacity to heal itself.

Good nutrition

An organic wholefood, plant-based diet creates a cancer-unfriendly alkaline environment in the body and supports the body’s natural healing process.

Power of the mind

A re-evaluation of core beliefs and values and the practical application of positive thinking can stimulate both the conscious and unconscious mind to assist the body’s healing process.

Emotional healing

Releasing the past and resolving negative emotions frees up emotional and physical energy to boost immunity. Step into life with an open heart to experience positive emotions which support healing.

Quest for meaning

A personal search for the meaning and purpose in life can offset the fears and worries for our own mortality and help maintain a positive state of mind.

Moderate exercise

Regular exercise can help prevent illness, improve the survival rates for people with cancer, support pain management, increase vitality and boost immunity and mental health.

Effective support

Adequate social support is essential to help people cope with the challenges and uncertainties of serious illness and work through the range of healing options and strategies.

*Please note: the degree to which each retreat focusses on these elements depends on the length of the retreat and the purpose.

The Gawler Foundation’s Seven Essential Elements for Good HealthThe work of The Gawler Foundation is based on Seven Essential Elements, widely recognised for their health benefits.

Whether you are newly diagnosed, just completed treatment or wondering what you can do for yourself, come to a Life and Living retreat and explore the self-help options available to you. The lifestyle choices you make on a daily basis can have a profound impact on your overall wellbeing, and can support any medical treatment or complementary therapies you choose as part of your treatment plan.

Over 11 days you will be immersed in lifestyle practices based on our Seven Essential Elements (page 4) to promote healing, boost immunity, reduce stress and create clarity of mind at a time when it’s needed most. You have the opportunity to share your thoughts, feelings and experiences with others on a similar journey and make an active plan for today and the future.

Working from the roots up, you will explore your own emotional wellbeing, your deeper purpose and meaning in life, your support networks and your relationships with others.

This in-depth retreat provides ample time to develop a regular mindfulness meditation practice and enjoy a wide range of delicious and nutritious plant-based meals. You will also learn creative tips for sourcing and preparing healthy meals in your own home.

“Without The Gawler Foundation, I wouldn’t be alive today. It was the things that I learnt back then and the power that those programs gave me. They gave me the strength to carry on.” Scott, diagnosed with Melanoma 2000

This program is specifically designed for people with cancer (and their support people) who have attended a previous Gawler Foundation cancer program or equivalent. The program will be tailored to meet the group’s specific requirements as determined during pre-registration.

This retreat is highly regenerative, offering a combination of relaxation and meditation, educational sessions, fresh juices, therapeutic nutrition and great conversations.

Over the years, Drs Ruth and Ian Gawler have helped many people to overcome the challenges of cancer. They will lead the bulk of this program, with some assistance from The Gawler Foundation staff.

Dr Ian Gawler OAM, BVSc MCounsHS Founder of The Gawler Foundation, Ian has played a major role in pioneering and popularising meditation and other mind-body techniques in the Western world. A powerful advocate of a healthy lifestyle, Ian co-founded the world’s first lifestyle-based cancer and multiple sclerosis self-help groups, authored six bestselling books and is known for his clarity and good humour.

Dr Ruth Gawler, MBBS, MGPPsych, FASPM is a GP with a special interest in mind-body medicine, yoga and meditation. Ruth has a long-term interest in how the mind determines the choices we make, the reactions we have, and the ways in which we process information and energy. She is passionately interested in helping people.

These five day mid-week Cancer Fundamentals retreats focus on the key lifestyle principles of the 11 day Life and Living retreat (page 7) to help manage and overcome the challenges of cancer. There is an emphasis on the importance of reducing stress and removing physical, emotional and mental blocks so that the body can heal itself.

What you think and do at the best of times is important for overall health, but when you are faced with cancer your day-to-day lifestyle choices and the quality of your thoughts become critical. Be inspired to play an active part in shaping your future health and wellbeing.

The things you learn at the retreat can safely support any medical treatment or complementary therapies you choose as part of your treatment plan.

OVERCOMING MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS by Professor George Jelinek

Professor Jelinek’s experience with his mother’s death from MS, and his own diagnosis in 1999, lend an urgency and compassion to this meticulous work. Professor Jelinek’s recommendations will change the lives of thousands of people with MS.*

Can I come to a retreat if I am undergoing medical treatment?

Yes of course, provided that you are well enough to participate and that administered treatments do not overlap with program dates as we discourage people from leaving the retreat during their stay. Each individual responds differently to treatment so we recommend that you consider the timing of the program in relation to the type of treatment you are undergoing.

Does Ian Gawler still run the retreats?

Ian retired from The Gawler Foundation in 2009. However, he does return to run a few guest facilitator retreats each year. Please see retreat descriptions for further details.

Is The Gawler Foundation a charity?

Yes, we have been a registered charity since our establishment in 1983. The foundation receives no government funding.

Does The Gawler Foundation provide treatment advice?

We do not provide treatment advice to participants. Our area of expertise is Lifestyle Medicine, the things you can do on a day-to-day basis to help yourself. If treatment choices are a source of great stress for you, meditation and a calm mind can assist with the decision making process.

Does The Gawler Foundation follow a particular spiritual tradition or religion?

No, we are a non-denominational organisation. Although we believe in faith and spirituality, we do not follow any particular religion, leader or school of thought. All faiths are welcome and respected.

If I come to a healing retreat will I be cured?

There is no magic bullet cure for cancer, however there are realistic ways to promote healing, creating a cancer unfriendly environment within the body to help improve recovery outcomes and quality of life.

Is The Gawler Foundation a medical facility?

No, we do not provide any medical treatment or nursing staff. Our programs are based on a self-help lifestyle approach and can complement any chosen medical treatments or complementary therapies.

Can I get financial assistance to attend a retreat?

If you wish to attend a cancer retreat at our Yarra Valley Living Centre but are experiencing financial hardship we invite you to apply for a part bursary for the program. Each application will be considered on an individual basis.

How you can helpPerhaps you’ve experienced cancer or multiple sclerosis yourself, or your loved one is in the thick of it. Maybe you want to be part of bringing hope and empowerment to people living with such a life-changing illness today.

The Gawler Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that receives no government funding. We rely on the support of members of the community, corporates and philanthropic trusts and foundations to continue to thrive and grow so that we can support and empower people living with cancer and MS.
