As prevalent as prescription med-ications are, all-natural remedies forcommon illnesses and conditions arestill a viable alternative to prescriptionmedications for many people. But are

these all-natural options safe?In 2011, Apple founder Steve Jobs

lost his battle with pancreatic cancer.Reports indicate that Jobs, a devoutBuddhist, delayed surgery and othertraditional treatments for almost a yearwhile he participated in holistic treat-ments for the cancer. Some of these in-cluded juice fasts, bowel cleansings, acupuncture, herbal supplements, andeven a vegan diet.Eventually,Jobs had

surgery, but some experts feel hewaited too long.

Although conventional care is oftenan effective means to treating illnessesand other conditions, there are many

doctors who agree that implementingnatural remedies at times can be safeand effective. Furthermore, not all nat-ural remedies are without merit, andsome traditional medicines are actuallyderived from natural, plant-based in-gredients themselves.

According to surgeon and author,Dr.Walter C. Thompson,Herbal med-icine is safe because its natural. Afterresearchingthe literature, one can truly

say that,at the very least, herbal medi-cine is safer than conventional drugs.

Those thinking about incorporatingnatural remedies into their health reg-imen can consider the following op-

tions. Nervousness and anxiety: Try let-

    tuce, chamomile, valerian, and rosepetals.

Pain relief:Use omega-3 fatty acids, green tea, ginger root, and tumeric.

Itchiness: Witch hazel, jewelweedand aloe vera are effective.

Feminine issues: Parsley, basil andgoldenseal can alleviate symptomsassociated with menstruation.

    Antibiotics: Oregano and garlic are

purported to have antibiotic quali-ties and can fend off harmful bacte-ria.

Infections: Honey has long beenused to heal and as an antibacterial

and antifungal remedy. Many natural foods are effective in

preventing and fighting cancer as well.Although natural remedies can be

effective, its important for pregnantwomen to avoid any herbs and plantsupplements until discussing therisks/benefits with their doctors. Also, some natural remedies can interactwith prescription drugs or increasetheir potency, so its importantto talk toa doctor about any plans.

Well-meaning parents or grandpar-ents often tell children not to do some-

thing with the warning that a serioushealth implication could result. Kidsoften take their eldersat their word.Butsome of these warnings bear moretruth than others. Heres the scoop onsome of the more common misconcep-tions.

    MYTH:Swallowed chewing gumstays in the

stomach for seven years. While chewing gum cannot be di-

gested and is meant to be chewed and

not swallowed, accidentally swallowinga piece here and there wont causemajor issues. Thats because the gumwill simply pass through the digestivesystem whole and come out with stool. If a large amount of gum is swallowedin a short period of time, then therecould be issues, including constipationand intestinal blockage in children.

MYTH:If you keep your eyes crossed too

long, they will get stuck that way.The muscles in the eye are just likeany muscles elsewhere in the body. Al-though they may tire and get sore, theyare relatively resilient and can take a lotof wear and tear. Crossing your eyesmay tax these muscles, but you wontdo any permanent harm. Rest assuredthat crossing the eyes will not leavethem stuck that way.

MYTH:Going outside with wet hair will

    make you sick.

Although you will feel colder step-ping outside with a part of your body

wet, it wont make you more suscepti-ble to catching a cold. Researchers atthe Common Cold Research Unit inEngland once tested a group of volun-teers who were given the cold virus. One half of the group stayed in a warmroom, while the others took a bath andstood wet in a hallway for a half hour. The wet group didnt catch more coldsthan the dry.

    MYTH:

Covering your head is most impor-tant because you lose 75 percent ofyour body heat through it.

This calculation is more for an infantwhose head makes up a greater per-centage of his or her body. In an adult, the figure is closer to 10 percent. Heatcan escape from any exposed area ofthe body. Therefore,it is helpful to bun-dle up all areas of the body whenspending time outdoors in the coldweather.

MYTH:Dont swim right after eating. The basis of this mantra is that when

digesting food, the digestive systempulls blood away from the muscles andthe ideais thatyoucould cramp upanddrown. While you mayhave less energyto swim vigorously, chances are youwont be so weak as to drown.

Although many health myths prevail, knowing the truth can help parents ed-ucate their children better about which

behaviors are safe and which are r isky.

(MS) Encouraging the use of cre-ative activities and games that chal-lenge your children to think outside thebox and build their problem solvingskills at an early age will help encour-age them to become independent

thinkers and problem solvers skillsthat will benefit themfor the restof theirlives.

Giving your child simple games suchas buildingblocks that require identify-ing different shapes is a great way tostartbuilding problemsolving skills. Forolder children, more challenging gamesmay be required to build their problemsolving abilities and their confidence intaking on greater challenges. One new

game that has caught the attention ofeducators and parents alike is the newPerplexus 3D game maze by PlasmartInc.This is a 3-dimensional maze gamewhere players manoeuvre a small mar-ble around challenging barriers inside

a large-sized transparent sphere.Unliketraditional flat-surface mazes that arecomposed of one path, Perplexus chal-lenges players problem solving abili-ties withnumerous paths to choose fromand hundreds of barriers to overcome.Playerscan race each other or theclock. In addition to being an entertaininggame, its a valuable tool for cognitivedevelopment, encouraging children toexercise their problem-solving, motor

and dexterity skills, as well as improv-ing their hand-eye coordination. Ex-perts say thegameis just as challenging

foradultsas it isfor childrenand will es-pecially keep parent solving skillssharp as well.

    For five years now, Happy

Muscles has been in the busi-

ness of helping their clients live

happier and healthier lives. It is

    quite an accomplishment in this

economy to not only be stable

enough for a new business to

survive five years, but to do it

debt free is nothing short of

    miraculous. However, after

    speaking with owner and li-

    censed therapist, Connie Feith,

its easy to see why, she cares

about people and puts herclients needs before her own.

When asked what she wanted to

say most about her business, her

reply was, I want everyone to

know that we are a cohesive

group of women who believe in

    making people feel better. Our

goal is to promote wellness in

the community. It is clear to see

that she is succeeding.Happy Muscles offers a mul-

titude of services that are geared

more to the clinical and thera-

    peutic side of massage and

    medicine that their facility is

cold or clinical. To the contrary,

    their rooms have been person-

(MS) Allison Moore, founder of theHereditaryNeuropathy Foundation (HNF),has made it her lifes mission to educate

people about a neurological conditionknown as CMT after experiencing sud-den-onset CMT in 1997. The disease wastriggered from a chemotherapy drug inhercancer treatment.A newfederal grantissuedby theCenters for Disease Controland Prevention will now enable Mooreand her HNF associates to push theboundaries on awareness and researchsurrounding CMT through several initia-tives.

CMT is a progressive disease that de-teriorates the nerves in the hands, feet, legs, and arms. Patients may developmuscle deformitiesthat impair movementandcan necessitatethe useof everythingfrom leg braces to wheelchairs.Until nowthere has been little discussion of CMTand doctors have been laxin diagnosingthe disease early particularly becausetheyhave been in thedark.

Manypeople dont know how to dealwith CMT because they know nothingabout it, says Moore.

The new grant has paved the way forthe creation of The National CMT Re-source Center (Help4CMT.com) among

other programs. This comprehensive on-line resource fills the gap in CMTadvo-cacy and information dispersement by

being the first forumto connect individu-als, doctors, researchers, and the generalpublic in a unique way. The site offers a

selection of resources, information andeducational/training materials on Char-cot-Marie-Tooth Disease and the latestoptions for symptom management. It canalsoserve asa way forthosewiththecon-dition to connect to offer supportand en-couragement, or be put in touch withthose whomay offer assistance.

From LivingWith CMTto a page forkids,The National CMTResource Centertargets often underserved groups in dis-seminating information about a relativelyunknown disease outside of its base ofpeople affected. Although estimates saythat around 2.6 millionpeopleworldwidehaveCMT and that it is the most commoninheritedneuropathy, knowledge of CMTon a global, even national, scale is limited.

Despite its similarity to the better-known multiple sclerosis, CMThas yet tohave the same level of media chatter assome other more widely recognizedcauses. Apart from actress Julie Newmar(theoriginal Catwoman) there have beenfew high-profile people to become thefaces of the disease something thattends towake up the public. Thanks to

the CDC grant, The National CMTRe-source Center is set to change all that spreading the wordacross theglobe. The

added bonus is that all of these resourcesare provided for free.

    Another offeringmadepossibleby the

grant is the CMTand Disability SchoolOutreach Program. This enables educa-torsand childrento learnabout CMT andbe mindful of individualswith thediseaseor other disabilities.Youth-geared infor-mationteach lessons on empathy.Plus thebook, Arlene on the Scene serves toopen the lines of communication aboutCMT or disabilityas part of inclusion ed-ucation.

    Through our School Outreach Pro-

gram we offer educational materials anda live author presentation aimed at in-creasing understanding of disability in a

fun, interactive way, says Carol Liu, amember of HNF.Our classrooms todayare filledwith a wide variety of strengthsand needs, abilities and challenges. Thiscalls for an increased understanding ofdisability and difference on the part ofstudents.

The grant is likely to open even moredoors to help catapult CMTawareness allaround the globe. More information canbe found at Help4CMT.
