Starting Your Own Business—An Alternative To The Job Search

While being laid off or “downsized” can be a traumatic time for anyone, especially in a tight job market, it

could also be an opportunity to change your career direction. One popular alternative is to start your own business. After all, how many of us dream of “being our own boss” and controlling our own destiny? But is starting your own business right for you? There are four key questions you will need to ask yourself before making the transition from worker to entrepreneur: • What sets you apart? According to CNN, there are nearly 6 million small businesses in the U.S. What skills are you able to perform, or what products are you able to produce that will set you apart and make you better than the rest? It is vital that you do your research to see how saturated this particular segment of the market is. • What skills are you lacking? When you start your own business, you become responsible for every aspect. Do you know how to write a business plan, analyze profi t margins and set prices? Do you know the regulations governing your industry? What tax implications do you need to understand? Does your industry require particular certifi cations? You may need to consider additional education, whether it be a certifi cate or a full academic degree. Speak with other small-business owners; ask them if there is education they wish they had pursued before

starting out. • How are you going to pay for this? Consider all your expenses. Will you operate your business out of your home or will you need a physical offi ce space? Will you be a sole proprietor or hiring contractors and employees? What types of insurance and precautionary measures are necessary? It is crucial to keep in mind the amount of time it takes to build a customer base; it is likely that you will be operating at a loss for the fi rst couple years. Do you plan on taking out a loan or seeking investors? Also, consider the amount of risk involved-is there another steady income in your household or is this business the sole income? • Where can you seek help? Many small businesses thrive by helping each other out. If you are not willing to get out there and talk up your business, entrepreneurship is probably not for you. Work with your local chamber of commerce and small-business administration; they provide resources for promoting your business and networking and serve as excellent resources for the inevitable bevy of questions you will have along the way. Most communities have entrepreneur groups that assist with strategic planning, securing funding and promotion. Many colleges and universities also offer similar opportunities. “Our Center for Entrepreneurship and Market Capitalism works with business owners for the good of the entire business community,” said Dr.

Boil Water Advisory: Think Before You Drink

The power goes out. There is construction in your neighborhood. A fl ood strikes. A water main cracks. Each of these can cause a disruption in the fl ow of water to your home. This disruption can

affect the quality of your water for drinking, cooking and household chores. In these instances, Boil Water Advisories are issued to ensure consumers take proper precautions to make sure water is safe to drink. Boil Water Advisories do not mean that water is contaminated, but rather that it could be tainted. The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention work to ensure consumers only use water that has been properly disinfected for drinking, cooking, cleaning dishes or for personal hygiene during a Boil Water Advisory. Follow these safety tips until the Boil Water Advisory has been lifted: • Drink bottled water. Drink water from a source you know wasn’t affected by a water main, such as water from a bottled water cooler or single-use bottled water. You may want to contact a local bottled water delivery service to quickly get access to three- or fi ve-gallon jugs of water. • Boil water to disinfect. This is the best method for ensuring drinking water is disinfected. Boil water for one minute, let it cool and store it in clean, covered containers. Boiling will kill any disease-causing organisms and provide you with clean, potable water. • Use household products. If you cannot boil your water, an alternative is to use unscented liquid household chlorine bleach to sanitize the water. Simply add ⅛ teaspoon (or eight drops) of unscented liquid household chlorine bleach for each gallon of water. Stir well and let it stand for 30 minutes before use. • Filter cloudy or murky water. Look at the appearance of your water in a clear glass. If it looks discolored or murky, you may want to fi lter it and disinfect it. You can create a very basic fi lter using a clean cloth, a coffee fi lter or a paper towel. However, it will still need to be disinfected.

According to the Centers for Dis-ease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 22 million school

days are lost annually due to the common cold—but a little care can help you pro-tect your family. Most parents have faced this diffi cult scenario at some point: Your child comes home from school with a cold or, worse, the fl u. Soon enough, you have it, too. Flash forward two weeks and some form of a cold or the fl u has made it through the ranks of your entire family. While there’s no surefi re way to com-pletely prevent these viruses, there are simple solutions to help keep your family healthy during cold and fl u season. Here, Kevin Ronneberg, M.D., associate medi-cal director, Target, offers his fl u-proof tips: Get vaccinated. Protect yourself and your family by getting vaccinated. Pre-vention is the key to staying healthy dur-ing cold and fl u season. Disinfect your home. Keep your house clean and germ-free by regularly wiping down surfaces and high hand-traffi c areas with a gentle yet effective cleaning solu-tion that’s nontoxic and safe for pets and young children. Clean up after playtime. Avoid spread-ing the germs your kids may have picked

up while sharing toys by washing their hands immediately following playtime. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Stay hydrated. Dehydration doesn’t just occur during hot weather. Cold weather and hot and dry buildings promote dehy-dration, too. Dehydration can leave your body more susceptible to common colds and the fl u, so drink up. Get up and go. During moderate exer-cise, immune cells circulate more quickly through the body and increase their ability to kill bacteria and viruses. Exercising on a daily basis also builds your immunity over time. Think twice before you share. Avoid sharing food, drinks, utensils or lip gloss. Germs can easily carry from one person to the other. Even if you feel well, fl u symp-toms can take one to three days to appear following exposure—you may be spread-ing illness and not even know it. Cover up that cough. Help prevent the spread of viruses by teaching your kids to cough or sneeze into the crook of their arm, sleeve or inside of their jacket or sweater. If you think the fl u is something to sneeze at, think again. The fl u causes more than 200,000 hospitalizations annually, with more than 20,000 of those being chil-

Protect Your Family During Cold And Flu Season

• Call your Culligan Man. If your neighborhood or community is under a Boil Water Advisory, make sure to follow sanitizing procedures for water softeners and drinking water systems installed in your home. You can fi nd these procedures outlined in your Culligan product owner’s manuals. It is also important to call your local Culligan Dealer. Your local Culligan Man can answer any questions about the quality and safety of your water, availability of bottled water services and what steps to take to address your home’s water treatment system.
