Dear Health Disparities Clinical Summer Research Fellowship Program Participants,

It is a pleasure to welcome you to the Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative (Aetna HPPI) sponsored by the Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs at UConn Health. The Aetna HPPI is a formal consortium offering a comprehensive program of educational enrichment and support activities for students of diverse backgrounds. This initiative, comprised of a pipeline of academic and research programs, continues to be instrumental in increasing the numbers of students from diverse backgrounds applying to and matriculating to medical or dental school, or graduate programs in the biomedical sciences. We appreciate the continued support of faculty and staff at UConn Health and at Central Connecticut State University who help to make these programs successful each year.

This handbook is designed to better acquaint you with the curriculum of the Health Disparities Clinical Summer Research Fellowship Program and the rules, expectations, and policies of the program, the Department of Health Career Opportunity Programs, and Central Connecticut State University. Aetna Health Professions Partnership Initiative

Health Disparities Clinical Summer Research Fellowship Program

General Description

This program provides an introduction to health disparities, cross cultural issues, principles of clinical medicine and skills for public health research and interventions. An overview of approaches to cultural definitions, public health issues and discussion of specific techniques for working with diverse populations in community settings is offered. Teaching methods consist of didactic sessions, experiential learning and student presentations. Included in the orientation is a tour of Hartford and introduction to clinical skills. For the tour, students explore Hartford neighborhoods to learn more about the history of Hartford, health issues facing Hartford residents and resources available. For the clinical skills portion, students receive background literature to prepare for a class on this subject followed by a practice session where students attempt to elicit a history from trained patient instructors. Both the patient instructors and faculty debrief and offer students feedback following the exercise.

For the remainder of the program, students divide their week between shadowing a community physician and spending time in a community organization. Both experiences are designed to help the students learn more about health disparities and strategies for addressing these issues. While at the community organization, the students learn about the clients served, health matters facing the community and services provided. Students also conduct a research project on a topic designed in collaboration with the community organization. During the program, students are required to prepare an abstract of their research project. At the end of the program, students present their research at a poster session held at UConn Health. Students, faculty and community members are invited to the poster presentation.

Learning Objectives

• To become familiar with the demographic influences on health care quality and effectiveness in the diagnosis and treatment of disease at an individual and community level.

• To be able to define the terms frequently used in cultural competency. • To become familiar with major areas of disparities that result in increased mortality and morbidity. • To become familiar with research methods and implement them in a project.
