How to stay healthy
in college
Why do college kids get sicker than they ever have?
• Lack of sleep• Exposure
• Diet • Stress • Substance abuse
1. Eat Right
• Chose healthy alternatives• Whole grains, protein, fruit and vegetables • Eat many smaller meals • Drink water• Why?• Boosts immune system
2. Exercise
• Walk to class• 30 minutes of cardio three to five times per
week.
3. Get Enough Sleep
• This is when the body recovers• 7-9 Hours• Avoid eating and drinking before bed• Avoid long naps during the day
4. Wash Your Hands
• Prevents illness• Before meals, when hands are in contact with
eyes or nose, and when in contact with people who are sick.
5. Don’t smoke
• Leaves you vulnerable to illness both short and long term
• Looking to quit? Contact the health center for help.
6. Get a flu shot
• More important now than before• Living in dorms• Available at the health center Tuesdays and
Thursday for a low price
7. Relax
• Stress and being run down leads to getting sick
• Have a routine• Give yourself breaks• Leave time for hanging out with friends and
doing your hobby.
8. Stay clean
• Wash everything regularly• Clothes• Sheets• Towels• Backpacks • Everything carries germs
