At a ceremony on 23 May Health Innovation Manchester and QIAGEN launched APIS AssayTechnologiesrsquo a new business dedicated to developing novel techniques (called biomarkers) fordiagnosing disease and pinpointing the treatments which are right for each individual patient

APIS based in Citylabs 10 located on the main Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust campushelp to realise the clinical and commercial potential of genomic medicine in diagnostic tests andpersonalisation of treatment and in the prediction and prevention of disease Using the transformationalpower of genomic medicine and big data APIS will overcome the hurdles that have so far hamperedthese amazing scientific breakthroughs being developed into clinically approved tests and companiondiagnostics which are in day to day use

Guy Lucchi joins Health Innovation Manchester to drive digitaltransformation forward

Guy Lucchi is joining Health Innovation Manchester as Digital Director this month to lead on theorganisationrsquos digital transformation programme across Greater Manchesterrsquos pound6bn devolved health andcare system

Guy is a digital leader with a proven track record in shaping and delivering large and complex digitalhealth strategies and transformation programmes He has spent much of his career as a ChiefTechnology Officer with global IT giant DXC Technology leading on digital healthcare and life sciencesinitiatives across the Group

Notably Guy was the CTO for DXCrsquos product portfolio that has led to significant digitisation ofadministration and electronic patient record systems across much of the NHS He was also instrumentalin developing DXCrsquos global healthcare cloud strategy

The city-region is working on plans to revolutionise digital technology across its health care and publicservices - from developing advanced data sharing technologies as part of NHS Englandrsquos Local Healthand Care Record programme (led by GMHSCP) to mobilising a digital innovation programme to unlockthe potential of health data to inform world leading research and transform care through Health InnovationManchester

Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnhamvisited the Health Innovation Manchester officeon Friday 17 May taking a tour of the new spacein Citylabs 10 and hearing about the innovativework that is currently taking place throughout theorganisation

A number of key projects were highlighted byHInM staff including Eliminating Hepatitis CSmart Hearts Co-op health stations and theCOPD programme including the Aardman COPDawareness animation

After taking a tour of the new office space andsome of the live projects the visit was roundedoff with a QampA session with staff and HealthInnovation Manchesters Chief ExecutiveProfessor Ben Bridgewater

More mums-to-be offeredtreatment to reduce cerebralpalsy in preterm babies

Mums-to-be in Greater Manchester are nowbeing offered a treatment to help reduce thechance of their preterm babies developingcerebral palsy as Health Innovation Manchesterworks to increase adoption and spread of thePReCePT programme in the city-region

PReCePT (Prevention of Cerebral Palsy inPreTerm Labour) sees eligible mothers inpreterm labour offered magnesium sulphatewhich has been proven to protect preterm babiesrsquobrains The project is one of seven NHS England-funded programmes selected for adoption andspread across the national AHSN Network

Latest figures show that since the PReCePTproject began in 2018 the proportion of eligiblemothers receiving the treatment has soared from58 to 88 in Greater Manchester

Debby Gould Maternity Clinical Lead at HealthInnovation Manchester and the GreaterManchester and Eastern Cheshire Patient SafetyCollaborative said ldquoWe are delighted that morewomen in Greater Manchester are now beingoffered this potentially life changing interventionand we are working with maternity units to ensureit is available for every eligible mother andpreterm babyrdquo

Sharing knowledge anddeveloping future plans forESCAPE-pain

Health Innovation Manchester hosted an eventon 15 May for providers of the ESCAPE-painprogramme at the National Cycling Centre inManchester

The event gathered providers local authoritymental health and leisure trusts from the GreaterManchester and Eastern Cheshire localities whodeliver the ESCAPE-pain programme to discussand share knowledge of the programme withpartner organisations and to look at how theprogramme can grow in active sites

Attendees also heard from people who hadcompleted the programme with their storiesexplaining how ESCAPE-pain can have apositive impact

Arjun Sikand Health Innovation Manchesters Associate Directorof Commercial Partnerships recently visited Rio de Janeiro for aworkshop aiming to bring engineers and clinicians together inorder to build teams share knowledge and create affordablehealth technologies across the globe

The workshop supported by Global Challenge Research Fundlooked to address access to essential medicines and healthtechnologies one of the cornerstones of the World HealthOrganisation (WHO)

Arjun said This multidisciplinary workshop was the first of its kindwith the attendees from Colombia and Brazil providing insight intothe demand opportunities and challenges in designing low costhealth technologies in resource restricted settings

lsquoShining a light on suicidecampaign launches in GreaterManchester

A new campaign has been launched toencourage people in Greater Manchester to talkabout suicide the biggest killer of men under 49and women aged between 20 to 34 in the region

More than 200 people a year take their own life inGreater Manchester and leaders across the cityregion have said ldquoenough is enoughrdquo and that ldquoitrsquostime to break the stigma of talking about suicidesuicidal thoughts and suicide bereavementrdquo

The shiningalightonsuicide campaign has beencreated to prevent suicides and aims to take thesubject out of the dark by encouragingeveryone to talk openly about suicide It follows

Identifying issues withtreatment and care throughdigital

The Performance Improvement Plan Generator(PINGR) project developed by a GP-led team atThe University of Manchester utilises digitalhealth records to improve treatment and care

PINGR is a population health management toolthat searches health records and comparespatient data to NICE clinical standards tohighlight patients potentially not receiving theright care or treatment PINGR also suggestsactions that could be taken for those patients ortheir wider care organisation including changesto medication or quality improvement ideas forGP practices

research among people who have consideredsuicide that talking honestly and openly aboutsuicide helped to save their lives

The campaign has been commissioned byGreater Manchester Health and Social CarePartnership and is supported by the Mayor ofGreater Manchester Andy Burnham and all thepartners including NHS councils police fireemergency services armed forcesrsquo veteransvoluntary and community groups

Currently live in over 20 practices in SalfordPINGR is focussed at present on chronicdiseases like CKD hypertension and COPD withan evaluation of its use in Salford suggesting thatpatients viewed in PINGR were 16 times morelikely to receive improvements in care comparedto those that were not

Further expansion of PINGR is being soughtacross other localities in Greater Manchester andin other areas of clinical need

Shortlist announced forGreater Manchesters Health ampCare Champion awards

After receiving almost 400 nominations theshortlist for this yearrsquos Greater ManchesterHealth amp Care Champion Awards has now beenannounced

30 individuals and teams working in the NHS aschool local authorities charities care homesand many other sectors have been shortlistedacross 10 different categories

A panel made up of representatives from acrossour public services plus patient representativesreviewed all the nominations and agreed the finalshortlist The winners themselves will beannounced at a ceremony in July

The Greater Manchester Health amp CareChampion Awards are the only awards thatcelebrate and recognise our employed andunwaged workforce who regularly go above andbeyond to improve the health and wellbeing ofthe people in our communities

Manchester patients invited totake part in research as part ofnew healthcare campaign

Patients carers and the public in GreaterManchester are invited to get involved in clinicalresearch as part of a new campaign Be Part ofResearch is the new nationwide initiative from theNational Institute for Health Research (NIHR)

New figures released by the NIHR in May showthat the number of people benefiting from clinicalresearch in England reached record highs thisyear - with 870250 participants involved instudies supported by the NIHRrsquos ClinicalResearch Network over the last 12 months

The number marks a significant step towards theNHS Long Term Planrsquos goal of one million peopletaking part in clinical research by 202324 - partof the Governmentrsquos strategy to improve caretreatment and NHS services in England

Crucial funding invested tounderstand link betweenhearing loss and dementia

People with hearing loss are up to five timesmore likely to be affected by dementia than thosewithout hearing loss To try to understand thislink national charities Action on Hearing Lossand Alzheimerrsquos Research UK have teamed up toinvest more than pound150000 into a researchproject conducted by Manchester researchers

The project supported by NIHR ManchesterBiomedical Research Centre will look to establishif dementia is directly caused by hearing loss ifdementia is an indirect consequence of socialisolation caused by hearing problems or ifhearing loss is a marker of biological factors thatincrease the risk of both hearing loss anddementia The Manchester team will alsoinvestigate whether hearing aids can help reducethe risk of dementia

Dr Piers Dawes who will be leading the studysaid ldquoThis is a global issue affecting 468 millionpeople worldwide and therefore there is anurgent need to find ways of preventing ordelaying dementia Several studies have reportedthat hearing loss in mid-life is associated with anincreased risk of dementia in later life

But they do not tell us whether hearing lossdirectly contributes to the risk or if treatinghearing loss like with hearing aids would helpprevent this condition

Worldrsquos first gene therapytreatment for geneticcondition in Manchester

A two-year-old patient at the Royal ManchesterChildrenrsquos Hospital (RMCH) is the first in theworld to receive a pioneering new ex vivo genetherapy treatment using lentiviral vector-modifiedautologous stem cells for the rare and life-limitinggenetic condition Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA(MPSIIIA)

MPSIIIA also known as Sanfilippo syndrome isa rare inherited disease caused by a geneticmutation and deficiency in the SGSH genemeaning that the bodyrsquos enzyme Sulfamidasecannot break down complex sugar moleculesproperly These molecules build up in cells withinthe brain and nervous system and have adevastating and progressive impact on a childrsquosdevelopment

Children born with the disease develop normallyat first but as the disease progresses it delaystheir development of speech learning andwalking and causes severe behaviouralproblems such as hyperactivity anxiety anddifficulty sleeping Eventually children lose theirspeech and mobility and will die early

Until now there was no cure for MPSIIIAhowever there may be new hope for thesechildren after the two-year-old was the first toreceive a new ex vivo bone marrow stem cellgene therapy treatment

National News

New world-leading technological innovations beingintroduced for patients across the NHS

3D heart modelling to rapidly diagnose coronary disease and an advanced blood test which can cutthe time it takes to rule-out a heart attack by 75 are among a raft of technological innovationsbeing introduced for patients across the NHS

The new treatments and tests announced on 5 June by NHS England Chief Executive SimonStevens are being delivered as part of the NHSrsquo Innovation and Technology Payment programmewhich is fast-tracking the roll-out of latest technology across the country

Other innovations include pregnant women getting a new pre-eclampsia test and cluster headachesufferers getting access to a handheld gadget which uses low-levels of electric current to reducepain

This is the third year of the drive to identify and fast track specific innovations into the NHS whichhas already benefitted over 300000 patients across the NHS The 15 Academic Health ScienceNetworks across England including Health Innovation Manchester will take direct responsibility foraccelerating uptake locally

Extra pound9 million for NHS totreat people at high risk ofstroke

NHS England has announced they are to investpound9 million to help find and treat people with anirregular heart rhythm that puts them at high riskof stroke

Experts estimate that more than 147000 peoplein England with an irregular heart rhythm are notreceiving appropriate treatment Making surepeople with this condition are given optimaltreatment ndash usually blood-thinning medication toprevent clots ndash can more than halve their risk ofhaving a stroke

The pound9 million investment will fund specialists towork with GPs and advise them on the besttreatment for people identified as having irregularheart rhythms (known as atrial fibrillation)

The programme will run across 23 areas of thecountry with the highest rates of the conditionreceiving funding for specialist clinicalpharmacists and nurses to help identify peoplewho could benefit from medication

This new approach is being supported by the 15NHS and care innovation bodies the AcademicHealth Science Networks

Chair of the AHSN Networksteps down to lead NorthernHealth Science Alliance

The AHSN Network has announced that itsnational Chair Dr Seacuteamus OrsquoNeill will bestepping down from post at the end of August2019

Seacuteamus will be leaving his role as CEO of theAcademic Health Science Network North Eastand North Cumbria (AHSN NENC) to take up theposition of CEO of the Northern Health ScienceAlliance (NHSA)

The NHSA is an alliance of the leading researchuniversities NHS teaching trusts and the AHSNsacross the North of England It is a driver forinvestment into the sector brings togetherresearch collaborations and is an advocate forthe Northrsquos health system in Government

Survey reveals local NHSresearch and innovationpriorities

The findings from a survey to identify local NHSinnovation and research needs have beenpublished

The views of local health stakeholders includingclinical leaders managers and directors withineach AHSN region were collected throughqualitative interviews and a questionnaire

The report outlines the national findings from thesurvey and includes a detailed analysis of theinnovation and research needs at local levelacross all AHSNs

Whilst there were some differences in regionalpriorities common themes emerged whichreflected wider challenges facing the NHS andalign with the priorities of the NHS Long TermPlan including addressing workforce challengesand delivery of mental health services

Why we are targeting a better way todiagnose and treat asthma

Following World Asthma Day Dr Stephen Fowler NIHRManchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) AsthmaProgramme Associate Lead reflects on the current routes toasthma diagnosis the implications of misdiagnosis and how hehopes our current research will lead to improvements in care bygetting each patient on the right treatment at the right time

Dr Fowler said Getting an accurate diagnosis of asthma is reallyimportant ndash it is often a lifelong condition and receiving the wrongdiagnosis and treatment can have life-changing consequences InManchester we are conducting a study to try and help work outthe best way of diagnosing asthma in order to ensure patients getthe treatment they need as early as possible

Mums-to-be in Greater Manchester are nowbeing offered a treatment to help reduce thechance of their preterm babies developingcerebral palsy as Health Innovation Manchesterworks to increase adoption and spread of thePReCePT programme in the city-region

PReCePT (Prevention of Cerebral Palsy inPreTerm Labour) sees eligible mothers inpreterm labour offered magnesium sulphatewhich has been proven to protect preterm babiesrsquobrains The project is one of seven NHS England-funded programmes selected for adoption andspread across the national AHSN Network

Latest figures show that since the PReCePTproject began in 2018 the proportion of eligiblemothers receiving the treatment has soared from58 to 88 in Greater Manchester

The event gathered providers local authoritymental health and leisure trusts from the GreaterManchester and Eastern Cheshire localities whodeliver the ESCAPE-pain programme to discussand share knowledge of the programme withpartner organisations and to look at how theprogramme can grow in active sites

A new campaign has been launched toencourage people in Greater Manchester to talkabout suicide the biggest killer of men under 49and women aged between 20 to 34 in the region

More than 200 people a year take their own life inGreater Manchester and leaders across the cityregion have said ldquoenough is enoughrdquo and that ldquoitrsquostime to break the stigma of talking about suicidesuicidal thoughts and suicide bereavementrdquo

The shiningalightonsuicide campaign has beencreated to prevent suicides and aims to take thesubject out of the dark by encouragingeveryone to talk openly about suicide It follows

Identifying issues withtreatment and care throughdigital

The Performance Improvement Plan Generator(PINGR) project developed by a GP-led team atThe University of Manchester utilises digitalhealth records to improve treatment and care

PINGR is a population health management toolthat searches health records and comparespatient data to NICE clinical standards tohighlight patients potentially not receiving theright care or treatment PINGR also suggestsactions that could be taken for those patients ortheir wider care organisation including changesto medication or quality improvement ideas forGP practices

research among people who have consideredsuicide that talking honestly and openly aboutsuicide helped to save their lives

The campaign has been commissioned byGreater Manchester Health and Social CarePartnership and is supported by the Mayor ofGreater Manchester Andy Burnham and all thepartners including NHS councils police fireemergency services armed forcesrsquo veteransvoluntary and community groups

Currently live in over 20 practices in SalfordPINGR is focussed at present on chronicdiseases like CKD hypertension and COPD withan evaluation of its use in Salford suggesting thatpatients viewed in PINGR were 16 times morelikely to receive improvements in care comparedto those that were not

Further expansion of PINGR is being soughtacross other localities in Greater Manchester andin other areas of clinical need

Crucial funding invested tounderstand link betweenhearing loss and dementia

People with hearing loss are up to five timesmore likely to be affected by dementia than thosewithout hearing loss To try to understand thislink national charities Action on Hearing Lossand Alzheimerrsquos Research UK have teamed up toinvest more than pound150000 into a researchproject conducted by Manchester researchers

The project supported by NIHR ManchesterBiomedical Research Centre will look to establishif dementia is directly caused by hearing loss ifdementia is an indirect consequence of socialisolation caused by hearing problems or ifhearing loss is a marker of biological factors thatincrease the risk of both hearing loss anddementia The Manchester team will alsoinvestigate whether hearing aids can help reducethe risk of dementia

Dr Piers Dawes who will be leading the studysaid ldquoThis is a global issue affecting 468 millionpeople worldwide and therefore there is anurgent need to find ways of preventing ordelaying dementia Several studies have reportedthat hearing loss in mid-life is associated with anincreased risk of dementia in later life

But they do not tell us whether hearing lossdirectly contributes to the risk or if treatinghearing loss like with hearing aids would helpprevent this condition

Worldrsquos first gene therapytreatment for geneticcondition in Manchester

A two-year-old patient at the Royal ManchesterChildrenrsquos Hospital (RMCH) is the first in theworld to receive a pioneering new ex vivo genetherapy treatment using lentiviral vector-modifiedautologous stem cells for the rare and life-limitinggenetic condition Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA(MPSIIIA)

MPSIIIA also known as Sanfilippo syndrome isa rare inherited disease caused by a geneticmutation and deficiency in the SGSH genemeaning that the bodyrsquos enzyme Sulfamidasecannot break down complex sugar moleculesproperly These molecules build up in cells withinthe brain and nervous system and have adevastating and progressive impact on a childrsquosdevelopment

Children born with the disease develop normallyat first but as the disease progresses it delaystheir development of speech learning andwalking and causes severe behaviouralproblems such as hyperactivity anxiety anddifficulty sleeping Eventually children lose theirspeech and mobility and will die early

Until now there was no cure for MPSIIIAhowever there may be new hope for thesechildren after the two-year-old was the first toreceive a new ex vivo bone marrow stem cellgene therapy treatment

New world-leading technological innovations beingintroduced for patients across the NHS

3D heart modelling to rapidly diagnose coronary disease and an advanced blood test which can cutthe time it takes to rule-out a heart attack by 75 are among a raft of technological innovationsbeing introduced for patients across the NHS

The new treatments and tests announced on 5 June by NHS England Chief Executive SimonStevens are being delivered as part of the NHSrsquo Innovation and Technology Payment programmewhich is fast-tracking the roll-out of latest technology across the country

Other innovations include pregnant women getting a new pre-eclampsia test and cluster headachesufferers getting access to a handheld gadget which uses low-levels of electric current to reducepain

This is the third year of the drive to identify and fast track specific innovations into the NHS whichhas already benefitted over 300000 patients across the NHS The 15 Academic Health ScienceNetworks across England including Health Innovation Manchester will take direct responsibility foraccelerating uptake locally

Extra pound9 million for NHS totreat people at high risk ofstroke

NHS England has announced they are to investpound9 million to help find and treat people with anirregular heart rhythm that puts them at high riskof stroke

Experts estimate that more than 147000 peoplein England with an irregular heart rhythm are notreceiving appropriate treatment Making surepeople with this condition are given optimaltreatment ndash usually blood-thinning medication toprevent clots ndash can more than halve their risk ofhaving a stroke

The pound9 million investment will fund specialists towork with GPs and advise them on the besttreatment for people identified as having irregularheart rhythms (known as atrial fibrillation)

The programme will run across 23 areas of thecountry with the highest rates of the conditionreceiving funding for specialist clinicalpharmacists and nurses to help identify peoplewho could benefit from medication

This new approach is being supported by the 15NHS and care innovation bodies the AcademicHealth Science Networks

Guy Lucchi is joining Health Innovation Manchester as Digital Director this month to lead on theorganisationrsquos digital transformation programme across Greater Manchesterrsquos pound6bn devolved health andcare system

Guy is a digital leader with a proven track record in shaping and delivering large and complex digitalhealth strategies and transformation programmes He has spent much of his career as a ChiefTechnology Officer with global IT giant DXC Technology leading on digital healthcare and life sciencesinitiatives across the Group

Notably Guy was the CTO for DXCrsquos product portfolio that has led to significant digitisation ofadministration and electronic patient record systems across much of the NHS He was also instrumentalin developing DXCrsquos global healthcare cloud strategy

Mums-to-be in Greater Manchester are nowbeing offered a treatment to help reduce thechance of their preterm babies developingcerebral palsy as Health Innovation Manchesterworks to increase adoption and spread of thePReCePT programme in the city-region

PReCePT (Prevention of Cerebral Palsy inPreTerm Labour) sees eligible mothers inpreterm labour offered magnesium sulphatewhich has been proven to protect preterm babiesrsquobrains The project is one of seven NHS England-funded programmes selected for adoption andspread across the national AHSN Network

Latest figures show that since the PReCePTproject began in 2018 the proportion of eligiblemothers receiving the treatment has soared from58 to 88 in Greater Manchester

Sharing knowledge anddeveloping future plans forESCAPE-pain

Health Innovation Manchester hosted an eventon 15 May for providers of the ESCAPE-painprogramme at the National Cycling Centre inManchester

The event gathered providers local authoritymental health and leisure trusts from the GreaterManchester and Eastern Cheshire localities whodeliver the ESCAPE-pain programme to discussand share knowledge of the programme withpartner organisations and to look at how theprogramme can grow in active sites

Attendees also heard from people who hadcompleted the programme with their storiesexplaining how ESCAPE-pain can have apositive impact

A new campaign has been launched toencourage people in Greater Manchester to talkabout suicide the biggest killer of men under 49and women aged between 20 to 34 in the region

More than 200 people a year take their own life inGreater Manchester and leaders across the cityregion have said ldquoenough is enoughrdquo and that ldquoitrsquostime to break the stigma of talking about suicidesuicidal thoughts and suicide bereavementrdquo

The shiningalightonsuicide campaign has beencreated to prevent suicides and aims to take thesubject out of the dark by encouragingeveryone to talk openly about suicide It follows

Identifying issues withtreatment and care throughdigital

The Performance Improvement Plan Generator(PINGR) project developed by a GP-led team atThe University of Manchester utilises digitalhealth records to improve treatment and care

PINGR is a population health management toolthat searches health records and comparespatient data to NICE clinical standards tohighlight patients potentially not receiving theright care or treatment PINGR also suggestsactions that could be taken for those patients ortheir wider care organisation including changesto medication or quality improvement ideas forGP practices

research among people who have consideredsuicide that talking honestly and openly aboutsuicide helped to save their lives

The campaign has been commissioned byGreater Manchester Health and Social CarePartnership and is supported by the Mayor ofGreater Manchester Andy Burnham and all thepartners including NHS councils police fireemergency services armed forcesrsquo veteransvoluntary and community groups

Currently live in over 20 practices in SalfordPINGR is focussed at present on chronicdiseases like CKD hypertension and COPD withan evaluation of its use in Salford suggesting thatpatients viewed in PINGR were 16 times morelikely to receive improvements in care comparedto those that were not

Further expansion of PINGR is being soughtacross other localities in Greater Manchester andin other areas of clinical need

After receiving almost 400 nominations theshortlist for this yearrsquos Greater ManchesterHealth amp Care Champion Awards has now beenannounced

30 individuals and teams working in the NHS aschool local authorities charities care homesand many other sectors have been shortlistedacross 10 different categories

Crucial funding invested tounderstand link betweenhearing loss and dementia

People with hearing loss are up to five timesmore likely to be affected by dementia than thosewithout hearing loss To try to understand thislink national charities Action on Hearing Lossand Alzheimerrsquos Research UK have teamed up toinvest more than pound150000 into a researchproject conducted by Manchester researchers

The project supported by NIHR ManchesterBiomedical Research Centre will look to establishif dementia is directly caused by hearing loss ifdementia is an indirect consequence of socialisolation caused by hearing problems or ifhearing loss is a marker of biological factors thatincrease the risk of both hearing loss anddementia The Manchester team will alsoinvestigate whether hearing aids can help reducethe risk of dementia

Dr Piers Dawes who will be leading the studysaid ldquoThis is a global issue affecting 468 millionpeople worldwide and therefore there is anurgent need to find ways of preventing ordelaying dementia Several studies have reportedthat hearing loss in mid-life is associated with anincreased risk of dementia in later life

But they do not tell us whether hearing lossdirectly contributes to the risk or if treatinghearing loss like with hearing aids would helpprevent this condition

Worldrsquos first gene therapytreatment for geneticcondition in Manchester

A two-year-old patient at the Royal ManchesterChildrenrsquos Hospital (RMCH) is the first in theworld to receive a pioneering new ex vivo genetherapy treatment using lentiviral vector-modifiedautologous stem cells for the rare and life-limitinggenetic condition Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA(MPSIIIA)

MPSIIIA also known as Sanfilippo syndrome isa rare inherited disease caused by a geneticmutation and deficiency in the SGSH genemeaning that the bodyrsquos enzyme Sulfamidasecannot break down complex sugar moleculesproperly These molecules build up in cells withinthe brain and nervous system and have adevastating and progressive impact on a childrsquosdevelopment

Children born with the disease develop normallyat first but as the disease progresses it delaystheir development of speech learning andwalking and causes severe behaviouralproblems such as hyperactivity anxiety anddifficulty sleeping Eventually children lose theirspeech and mobility and will die early

Until now there was no cure for MPSIIIAhowever there may be new hope for thesechildren after the two-year-old was the first toreceive a new ex vivo bone marrow stem cellgene therapy treatment

New world-leading technological innovations beingintroduced for patients across the NHS

3D heart modelling to rapidly diagnose coronary disease and an advanced blood test which can cutthe time it takes to rule-out a heart attack by 75 are among a raft of technological innovationsbeing introduced for patients across the NHS

The new treatments and tests announced on 5 June by NHS England Chief Executive SimonStevens are being delivered as part of the NHSrsquo Innovation and Technology Payment programmewhich is fast-tracking the roll-out of latest technology across the country

Other innovations include pregnant women getting a new pre-eclampsia test and cluster headachesufferers getting access to a handheld gadget which uses low-levels of electric current to reducepain

This is the third year of the drive to identify and fast track specific innovations into the NHS whichhas already benefitted over 300000 patients across the NHS The 15 Academic Health ScienceNetworks across England including Health Innovation Manchester will take direct responsibility foraccelerating uptake locally

Extra pound9 million for NHS totreat people at high risk ofstroke

NHS England has announced they are to investpound9 million to help find and treat people with anirregular heart rhythm that puts them at high riskof stroke

Experts estimate that more than 147000 peoplein England with an irregular heart rhythm are notreceiving appropriate treatment Making surepeople with this condition are given optimaltreatment ndash usually blood-thinning medication toprevent clots ndash can more than halve their risk ofhaving a stroke

The pound9 million investment will fund specialists towork with GPs and advise them on the besttreatment for people identified as having irregularheart rhythms (known as atrial fibrillation)

The programme will run across 23 areas of thecountry with the highest rates of the conditionreceiving funding for specialist clinicalpharmacists and nurses to help identify peoplewho could benefit from medication

Crucial funding invested tounderstand link betweenhearing loss and dementia

People with hearing loss are up to five timesmore likely to be affected by dementia than thosewithout hearing loss To try to understand thislink national charities Action on Hearing Lossand Alzheimerrsquos Research UK have teamed up toinvest more than pound150000 into a researchproject conducted by Manchester researchers

The project supported by NIHR ManchesterBiomedical Research Centre will look to establishif dementia is directly caused by hearing loss ifdementia is an indirect consequence of socialisolation caused by hearing problems or ifhearing loss is a marker of biological factors thatincrease the risk of both hearing loss anddementia The Manchester team will alsoinvestigate whether hearing aids can help reducethe risk of dementia

Dr Piers Dawes who will be leading the studysaid ldquoThis is a global issue affecting 468 millionpeople worldwide and therefore there is anurgent need to find ways of preventing ordelaying dementia Several studies have reportedthat hearing loss in mid-life is associated with anincreased risk of dementia in later life

Worldrsquos first gene therapytreatment for geneticcondition in Manchester

A two-year-old patient at the Royal ManchesterChildrenrsquos Hospital (RMCH) is the first in theworld to receive a pioneering new ex vivo genetherapy treatment using lentiviral vector-modifiedautologous stem cells for the rare and life-limitinggenetic condition Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA(MPSIIIA)

MPSIIIA also known as Sanfilippo syndrome isa rare inherited disease caused by a geneticmutation and deficiency in the SGSH genemeaning that the bodyrsquos enzyme Sulfamidasecannot break down complex sugar moleculesproperly These molecules build up in cells withinthe brain and nervous system and have adevastating and progressive impact on a childrsquosdevelopment

Children born with the disease develop normallyat first but as the disease progresses it delaystheir development of speech learning andwalking and causes severe behaviouralproblems such as hyperactivity anxiety anddifficulty sleeping Eventually children lose theirspeech and mobility and will die early

3D heart modelling to rapidly diagnose coronary disease and an advanced blood test which can cutthe time it takes to rule-out a heart attack by 75 are among a raft of technological innovationsbeing introduced for patients across the NHS

The new treatments and tests announced on 5 June by NHS England Chief Executive SimonStevens are being delivered as part of the NHSrsquo Innovation and Technology Payment programmewhich is fast-tracking the roll-out of latest technology across the country

Other innovations include pregnant women getting a new pre-eclampsia test and cluster headachesufferers getting access to a handheld gadget which uses low-levels of electric current to reducepain

This is the third year of the drive to identify and fast track specific innovations into the NHS whichhas already benefitted over 300000 patients across the NHS The 15 Academic Health ScienceNetworks across England including Health Innovation Manchester will take direct responsibility foraccelerating uptake locally

Extra pound9 million for NHS totreat people at high risk ofstroke

NHS England has announced they are to investpound9 million to help find and treat people with anirregular heart rhythm that puts them at high riskof stroke

Experts estimate that more than 147000 peoplein England with an irregular heart rhythm are notreceiving appropriate treatment Making surepeople with this condition are given optimaltreatment ndash usually blood-thinning medication toprevent clots ndash can more than halve their risk ofhaving a stroke

The pound9 million investment will fund specialists towork with GPs and advise them on the besttreatment for people identified as having irregularheart rhythms (known as atrial fibrillation)

The programme will run across 23 areas of thecountry with the highest rates of the conditionreceiving funding for specialist clinicalpharmacists and nurses to help identify peoplewho could benefit from medication

Crucial funding invested tounderstand link betweenhearing loss and dementia

People with hearing loss are up to five timesmore likely to be affected by dementia than thosewithout hearing loss To try to understand thislink national charities Action on Hearing Lossand Alzheimerrsquos Research UK have teamed up toinvest more than pound150000 into a researchproject conducted by Manchester researchers

The project supported by NIHR ManchesterBiomedical Research Centre will look to establishif dementia is directly caused by hearing loss ifdementia is an indirect consequence of socialisolation caused by hearing problems or ifhearing loss is a marker of biological factors thatincrease the risk of both hearing loss anddementia The Manchester team will alsoinvestigate whether hearing aids can help reducethe risk of dementia

Dr Piers Dawes who will be leading the studysaid ldquoThis is a global issue affecting 468 millionpeople worldwide and therefore there is anurgent need to find ways of preventing ordelaying dementia Several studies have reportedthat hearing loss in mid-life is associated with anincreased risk of dementia in later life

But they do not tell us whether hearing lossdirectly contributes to the risk or if treatinghearing loss like with hearing aids would helpprevent this condition

Worldrsquos first gene therapytreatment for geneticcondition in Manchester

A two-year-old patient at the Royal ManchesterChildrenrsquos Hospital (RMCH) is the first in theworld to receive a pioneering new ex vivo genetherapy treatment using lentiviral vector-modifiedautologous stem cells for the rare and life-limitinggenetic condition Mucopolysaccharidosis IIIA(MPSIIIA)

MPSIIIA also known as Sanfilippo syndrome isa rare inherited disease caused by a geneticmutation and deficiency in the SGSH genemeaning that the bodyrsquos enzyme Sulfamidasecannot break down complex sugar moleculesproperly These molecules build up in cells withinthe brain and nervous system and have adevastating and progressive impact on a childrsquosdevelopment

Children born with the disease develop normallyat first but as the disease progresses it delaystheir development of speech learning andwalking and causes severe behaviouralproblems such as hyperactivity anxiety anddifficulty sleeping Eventually children lose theirspeech and mobility and will die early

Until now there was no cure for MPSIIIAhowever there may be new hope for thesechildren after the two-year-old was the first toreceive a new ex vivo bone marrow stem cellgene therapy treatment

New world-leading technological innovations beingintroduced for patients across the NHS

3D heart modelling to rapidly diagnose coronary disease and an advanced blood test which can cutthe time it takes to rule-out a heart attack by 75 are among a raft of technological innovationsbeing introduced for patients across the NHS

The new treatments and tests announced on 5 June by NHS England Chief Executive SimonStevens are being delivered as part of the NHSrsquo Innovation and Technology Payment programmewhich is fast-tracking the roll-out of latest technology across the country

Other innovations include pregnant women getting a new pre-eclampsia test and cluster headachesufferers getting access to a handheld gadget which uses low-levels of electric current to reducepain

This is the third year of the drive to identify and fast track specific innovations into the NHS whichhas already benefitted over 300000 patients across the NHS The 15 Academic Health ScienceNetworks across England including Health Innovation Manchester will take direct responsibility foraccelerating uptake locally

Extra pound9 million for NHS totreat people at high risk ofstroke

NHS England has announced they are to investpound9 million to help find and treat people with anirregular heart rhythm that puts them at high riskof stroke

Experts estimate that more than 147000 peoplein England with an irregular heart rhythm are notreceiving appropriate treatment Making surepeople with this condition are given optimaltreatment ndash usually blood-thinning medication toprevent clots ndash can more than halve their risk ofhaving a stroke

The pound9 million investment will fund specialists towork with GPs and advise them on the besttreatment for people identified as having irregularheart rhythms (known as atrial fibrillation)

The programme will run across 23 areas of thecountry with the highest rates of the conditionreceiving funding for specialist clinicalpharmacists and nurses to help identify peoplewho could benefit from medication

Survey reveals local NHSresearch and innovationpriorities

The findings from a survey to identify local NHSinnovation and research needs have beenpublished

The views of local health stakeholders includingclinical leaders managers and directors withineach AHSN region were collected throughqualitative interviews and a questionnaire

The report outlines the national findings from thesurvey and includes a detailed analysis of theinnovation and research needs at local levelacross all AHSNs

Whilst there were some differences in regionalpriorities common themes emerged whichreflected wider challenges facing the NHS andalign with the priorities of the NHS Long TermPlan including addressing workforce challengesand delivery of mental health services
