CONCUSSIONSProblem: Your child suffers a blow to the head during a game or prac-

tice, resulting in concussion, a type of traumatic brain injury. No one seems to notice, so your child keeps playing, which can dramatically prolong recovery, says Hossam AbdelSalam, MD, FAAP, ABHS medical director of the Center for Pediatric Brain.

Solutions: “Parents need to be aware of concussion and get it treated immediately so kids can recover promptly and be able to resume their normal life,” says Dr. AbdelSalam. Before the season starts, make sure your child gets a baseline impact test, an assessment of balance and brain function that can be consulted later if necessary. Know the signs of concussion and teach your child to speak up if he or she experiences any of them. For more info, visit www.AlexianBrothersHealth.org/Concussion.

Experts at the ABHS Pediatric Concussion Clinic perform compre-hensive evaluations and can develop a plan for safe return to school and sports. For more info about concussion services at ABHS, including baseline testing, call 847-490-4222.

WHAT’S ON YOUR RADAR?As your kids head back to school, ABHS experts weigh in on some leading health problems to look out for, plus how to solve them

SUBSTANCE ABUSEProblem: “With the legalization of marijuana in some

parts of the country, both parents and kids are not taking it as seriously as they need to,” says Cecelia Horan, PsyD, clinical psychologist and director of child and adolescent services at Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital (ABBHH). Research shows using marijuana can negatively impact brain development, thinking, memory and even IQ. You should also be aware of the risks of other frequently abused substances, including alcohol and prescription drugs, says Linda Lewaniak, MSW, CAADC, director of the Center for Addiction Medicine and director of outpa-tient services at ABBHH.

Solutions: Educate yourself about adolescent substance abuse; to learn more, visit www.abbhh.org and www.drugabuse.gov. Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital offers a range of substance abuse treat-ment programs for adolescents, including inpatient, partial hospitalization and after-school outpatient programs. For a professional evaluation, call 855-383-2224.

IMMUNIZATIONSProblem: School has started but your child hasn’t re-

ceived all required immunizations. To avoid being excluded from school, children in elementary school and middle/junior high school must show proof of a physical exam and the required immunizations by October 31. (Note: High school students must show proof of a physical exam and immunizations before school starts.)

Solutions: “Call the school or your local health depart-ment and see what vaccines your child needs and at what age,” says Jane Sloger, RN, community health nurse for Elk Grove Village. Through a community partnership, ABHS nurses help staff monthly, low-cost immunization clinics in the Village of Hoffman Estates for children who are unin-sured or enrolled in All Kids. For more info about Hoffman Estates’ baby and children’s clinics, call 847-781-4850.

The fall clinics will also offer flu shots. “According to the CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], the best way to avoid the flu is to get vaccinated,” says Cathy Da-gian, RN, nursing supervisor at Village of Hoffman Estates.

Sign Up for Fit KidsIn 2013, 61 percent of participants reduced their body mass index (BMI)

This fall, head back into the classroom with your child: Sign up for Fit Kids, our free healthy lifestyles program for children ages 6 to 12 and their parents. The next session, which takes place September 18 through October 23 at St. Alexius Medical Center, features Zumba, healthy cooking demos, grocery store tours and more. To enroll in Fit Kids, which is presented in English and Spanish, call 1-855-FOR-KIDZ.

CYBERBULLYINGProblem: Your children’s online choices, such as cy-

berbullying and sexting (sending a nude or seminude photo of oneself via text message or the Internet), can have seri-ous consequences.

Solutions: Madelyn Burbank, LSW, therapist and S.A.V.E2 navigator for Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health, advises engaging with children about their use of technology, early and often. “The younger you start getting kids used to having limits and parental involve-ment in their phones and other technology, the easier it will be to hold on to those limits in adolescence, when your children are starting to become more independent,” adds Burbank.

Alexian Brothers Parish Services offers R U e-ware?, a presentation that covers age-appropriate technology use, beginning at the preschool level. For dates and times, call 847-230-3744. Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital can help children struggling with “offline” bully-ing. For a professional evaluation, call 855-383-2224.

SLEEPProblem: Your child has an irregular sleep schedule,

which can negatively impact his or her ability to fall and remain asleep.

Solutions: To help your child get plenty of shut-eye, encourage the following bedtime habits, advises Anna Ivanenko, MD, PhD, ABHS director of pediatric sleep medicine. Turn in and wake up at the same time each day; spend 30 to 45 minutes before bed doing a quiet, sooth-ing activity such as reading or playing a board game; keep the bedroom quiet, cool and dark (dim nightlights are OK); use the bed for sleep only; keep TVs, cellphones and other electronics out of the bedroom; avoid caffeine and sugar before bedtime; and discourage co-sleeping with parents and pets.

The Sleep Health Center at Alexian Brothers Medical Center offers comprehensive sleep services to treat the full spectrum of pediatric sleep disorders. If you have concerns about your child’s sleep, call 847-981-3660 to schedule a consultation at the ABHS sleep clinic.

Snack Attack This fall, satisfy your child’s team with simple, tasty and healthy postgame snacks

Try these simple recipes and smart snacking tips from Kathy Stanislawski, RD, CDE, LDN, ABHS outpatient dietitian, and Laura Leciejewski, MS, RD, LDN, ABHS director of clinical nutrition:

Quick and Simple Trail Mix 1 part each of the ingredients below for a total of 2 to 4 ounces of trail mix per child• Whole nuts (unsalted is preferred)• Dried fruit (no sugar added)• Grain (such as low-sugar cereal or pretzels)“Put the ingredients in a large bag, mix it all together, and bring little scoops,” says Leciejewski. For a touch of team spirit, serve the mixture in muffin cups deco-rated with team colors. Paper cups and snack baggies also do the trick.

“I surveyed my children, and trail mix was one of my son’s favorite postgame snacks,” says Stanislawski, who advises polling the team ahead of time for any allergies, such as dairy, nut or gluten. For nut-free trail mix, substitute air-popped popcorn.

Rainbow Fruit KabobsServe fresh fruit kabobs featuring a variety of colorful fruits such as watermelon, other types of melon, frozen grapes, pineapple chunks and berries. “You can even throw chunks of cheese on there, too, for protein,” says Stanislawski. Note: Be sure to pack plenty of napkins!

A Closer Look

ARE YOU SMART ABOUT CANCER?SORT FACT FROM FICTION WHEN YOU TAKE THIS QUICK QUIZ

These days, information about cancer is easy to find. But there are plenty of myths floating amid the facts. Take this true/false quiz to test your

knowledge.

1. T/F? A bruise or other injury of the breast can be-come cancerous.False. This belief likely arose because women with breast pain tend to visit their doctor, sometimes leading the doctor to detect a tumor that’s been there all along.

2. T/F? Men diagnosed with prostate cancer can benefit from a brisk walk.True. Research shows that a man with prostate cancer can improve his outcome by walking briskly for three hours a week.

3. T/F? Everyone has the same risk of developing lung cancer, regardless of gender or ethnicity.False. Men develop lung cancer more often than women, and African-Americans of both sexes are more likely to develop it than Caucasians, even though their exposure to cigarette smoke is lower.

4. T/F? Only women who are at high risk of developing breast cancer can reduce their risk.False. All women can reduce their risk of breast cancer by maintaining a healthy weight, getting vigorous exer-

cise (45 to 60 minutes on most days) and drinking no more than one serving of alcohol per day.

5. T/F? Taking vitamin E and the mineral selenium can help reduce a man’s risk of developing prostate cancer.False. Research shows that these supplements do not decrease the risk of prostate cancer.

6. T/F? If you have cancer, consuming sugar will feed the disease, making it worse.False. While cancer cells do gobble up more sugar than normal body cells, research has not shown that eating sugar will worsen your cancer. Still, eating excessive sweets can cause weight gain, which can raise your risk of getting several types of cancer.

DON’T SWEAT ITHAVING A HARD TIME FITTING EXERCISE INTO YOUR HECTIC SCHEDULE? HERE’S HOW.

To get in more workouts during your regular routine and battle the bulge, consider this advice from Leigh Ferstein, Elk Grove Park District’s fitness and wellness coordinator.• Ready, set, go. The first step, Ferstein emphasizes, is to be prepared with the

right workout gear on hand—in your car, backpack, desk drawer. “Sometimes that’s enough to get you to remember your plans and get something going,” she says.

• Put on your walking shoes. Try to include walking in your day. Take the stairs and park farther away. At work, Ferstein recommends scheduling walking meetings if sitting down or taking notes is not required. If lunch is an hour, spend half an hour eating and the other walking.

• Be flexible. “You can always do yoga poses,” says Ferstein. She suggests choosing moves that can be done with the clothes you’re wearing, such as downward dog. Select up to six simple moves and repeat each four times.

• Rock out with the band. “Invest in a really good resistance band and take it anywhere,” says Ferstein. “Don’t walk around with a bag full of gym weights. A resistance band can offer a good workout with just three to four different exercises.”

Calcium ScoreIf you are between 50 and 65 years of age and have a family history of heart disease or coro-nary artery disease and have not had a calcium score done, you may wish to consider having one performed. A calcium score is a CT scan to quantify the amount of calcified plaque in the heart arteries. This amount, or “score,” has been shown to predict the long-term risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack. This is a 10-minute test; no contrast. Ask your primary care doctor for a referral.

For more information, please call 847-981-3680.Fee: $99

Vascular ScreenMore than 12 million people suffer from peripheral arterial disease (PAD) and are four times more likely to die of a heart at-tack. PAD may be present if you feel pain, numbing, aching, tin-gling or cramping in your limbs or buttocks, especially while walk-ing. Consider having a screening if you have a family history of PAD or if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. This is a simple, three-part, noninvasive ultrasound test and takes about 30 minutes to complete. For more info, call 847-981-3680.Fee: $99

WHEN TO BUY ORGANIC?KIM MACK, MS, RD, LDN, CNSC, ABHS CLINICAL DIETITIAN, OFFERS SMART SHOPPING TIPS

What’s the significance of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s certified organic label? If a food product has that label, that means that the originating process, such as the plant or the farm, is not using certain substances, including pesticides, GMOs [genetically modified organisms], antibiotics or hormones, on their crops or in feed for their animals. How do you advise budget-conscious shoppers on buying organic products? You don’t have to buy everything organic—this isn’t an all-or-nothing thing—it’s just a matter of decreasing the amount of certain substances in our overall food supply and having a little bit more control as consumers. I usually suggest prioritizing shopping for organic products as follows: dairy first, then fruits and vegetables, and then the meats. For help deciding when to buy organic or con-ventional produce, I recommend consulting the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen™ and Clean Fifteen™, which are available as an app and online at www.ewg.org/foodnews. These lists rank conventionally grown fruits and veg-etables by pesticide levels, based on results of sample tests by the USDA and U.S. Food and Drug Administration.Any other tips?Eating in season is a great way to stay on a budget. This fall, look for root veg-etables (potatoes, carrots), which are important to buy organic, and apples.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY HOLIDAY FLIGHTSAir travel nowadays—especially over the holidays or during cold and flu sea-son—can feel like navigating a minefield, as airports and planes are often filled with people who are sick. And now, news about Middle East respiratory syn-drome (MERS) might make some travelers especially worried. To arrive at your destination in good health, put these tips on your to-do list:

• Protect yourself against germs. Despite widespread fears that cabin air is chock-full of germs, most airlines use filters that remove 97 to 99 percent of viruses and bacteria. To safeguard against germs from sick fellow passengers, wash your hands before eating and avoid touching your mouth, nose and eyes during your flight. (Note: If you are concerned about MERS, talk to your doc-tor. For the latest MERS-related info and advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, visit the CDC’s MERS Web page at www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/mers/index.html.)

• Avoid the flu. If you plan to travel during flu season, get a flu shot at least two weeks before your flight.

• Stay hydrated. The air in plane cabins can be dry, so drink plenty of water and other nonalcoholic beverages.

• Stabilize your internal clock. To help avoid jet lag, get lots of sleep before your trip, avoid alcohol, and eat well-balanced meals. When you arrive at your destina-tion, adjust your eating/sleeping schedule to the current time zone right away.

• Get moving. During a long flight, get up and walk for several minutes every hour or so, to prevent circulatory problems in your legs.
