Strict Parenting Linked To Higher Obesity Risk In Kids
Huffington Post
According to a recent study, children whose parents are controlling
and do not have proper communication have a higher risk for obesity. The
study used data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Children and
Youth that examined the BMIs of kids in Canada from 1994 through 2008.
Those whose parents were affectionate and were open about behavior
discussions with their children had their risk for obesity decreased by around
30 percent. Researchers found this fact to be true for children from ages 2 to
11. In addition, low-income level households also negatively impacted
obesity risk. Regardless, a larger stress was put on proper parenting to
control the problem. Authoritarian style parents have the greater risk of
obesity for their children. They often do not explain to their kids the reason
behind a punishment. Parents like these also have more control and rules
over their child, but they fail to explain the cause for these actions. This
makes it hard for the child to regulate his own behavior, such as eating
choices. On the other hand, authoritative parents have enforced rules but
they also make sure to spend time with the child and show affection towards
him. They make sure the child understands the problem and explains how to
prevent it. Overall, establishing boundaries is important, but it is also
imperative to make sure the child accepts and values these customs as well.
This article was unique to me because obesity is a dangerous
condition for young children and it is becoming more and more prevalent
these days. My mother is an avid health researcher in her spare time, and she
makes sure to remind me how important it is to maintain proper health,
mentally and physically. It has grown on me, and I hope one day that I can
spread these important practices to others who may not be as knowledgeable
as I am. For knowledge is power, and if we can create more awareness of the
dangerous risks of being overweight and the many ways we can prevent it,
the future of the forthcoming generation will be a bright one. One should not
be prevented from doing big things and living his life due to preventable
health problems. Even though the study was conducted in Canada, I am sure
the same conclusions apply in the U.S. I am glad I took the time to learn
about this new study, as my aunt gave birth to a baby boy some time ago. I
hope to share this new piece of information with her, as I hope that the
baby’s childhood is filled with the proper care and support that all children
deserve.
