Q: Where did your interest in healthcare come from?

A: I’ve always had an interest in helping people. I’m alsointerested in math and science and how it can be used practically to help others.

Q: What do you enjoy most about family practice?

A: I enjoy the breadth of care we provide for our patients. We get to see people of both extremes in life, see them over time, see how their issues develop, and figure out what we can do to help them find a better course.

Q: What is your favorite part about being a healthcare provider at SEMC?

A. We’ve (my family) lived in the area for 26 years and have en-joyed the warmth of the people. I feel like the patients here take an

active role in their care. They’re responsible and thoughtful.

Q: Do you have a special interest in any area(s) of medicine?

A: An area that has been quite fulfilling for me is helping patients overcome infertility with the use of NaProTECHNOLOGY.

Q: What is your philosophy of practice?

A: Do for the good of the patient, intend no harm, and advise and help the patient in their decisions about health care.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: I enjoy taking advantage of the 10,000 lakes for kayaking, canoing and sailing, and my family likes to camp. I also just joined the Sleepy Eye Concertina Club.

At SEMC, we believe exceptional care is in the details. When it comes to the birth of your child, our obstetrical physicians and nurses make it a priority to provide you with the answers, resources, support and compassionate care you deserve from the moment you sit down for your first prenatal visit to the day you take your little one home.

Amanda Gartner of Springfield began prenatal care at SEMC after discovering her and her husband, Chris, were expecting their third child.

“I delivered our other two in Springfield, but they don’t deliver anymore. I had heard great things about Dr. Karlyn (Armbruster), so we decided to come here. We absolutely love her.”

The Gartners said they appreciated the resources SEMC provided in the months preceding the birth of their baby.

“I wasn’t quite sure if I was going to breastfeed or not because I hadn’t with the first two, but Dr. Karlyn was really helpful and supportive about everything. She gave me the resources I needed,” Amanda said.

“I also saw the Lactation Counselor, and she was really helpful.”

WELCOME TO THE WORLD, HUDSONOn January 17, Amanda was admitted to SEMC.

“They were ready for us when we walked through the doors. Polina (SEMC RN) was already getting things ready for us in the room when we got here. People knew who we were and brought us down to our room,” Amanda said.

In the moments leading up to the delivery, Dr. Karlyn refreshed the Gartners on the delivery process.

“She was good about talking through the details. I loved how before she did anything, like my epidural, she explained everything thoroughly to make sure we understood,” Amanda commented.

The Gartners didn’t find out the sex of their first two babies before they were born and decided not to with their third child either. Dr. Karlyn knew this and

arranged for Chris to announce the sex of their baby.

“Right before he was born, she told the staff not to say anything. I got to announce the sex of our baby. It was pretty neat,” Chris said.

At 2:13 p.m., Chris announced the newest member of the Gartner family; a baby boy. Hudson Scott came into the world weighing 7 pounds, 3 ounces and measuring 21 inches long.

The Gartners said another special part of their birth experience was having their friend, Shari Baumann, present. Shari is a nurse at SEMC.

“She wasn’t working at the time but had offered (to come in), so the nurses called her and she came in. It was a blessing to have her there; it was really special,” Amanda said.

Amanda also commented on the care they received from other SEMC nurses.

“Polina was amazing. From the minute we got here, she was taking care of us. She actually cared for us throughout our entire stay. And Britney, our night nurse, was good too.”

“It seemed like staff was always around,” Chris added.

“And you never felt like you were doing it alone,” Amanda said.
