WHO World Health Organisation
The WHO is the United Nations specialisedagency for health
It was established on 7 april 1948
WHO's objective, as set out in its constitution, isthe attainment by all peoples of the highestpossible level of health.
Health is defined in WHO's constitution as astate of complete physical, mental and socialwell-being and not merely the absence ofdisease or infirmity.

WHO is governed by 192 Member Statesthrough the World Health Assembly.
The Health Assembly is composed ofrepresentatives from WHO's Member States.

Functions The WHO aims to raise awareness of health problems
which are on a worldwide scale and address them E.g.Smoking.
Helps to provide aid to people around the world to dealwith diseases. e.g. HIV/AIDS
Carries out research into how to improve health on aglobal scale (to eradicate epidemic and other diseases)
Sets up campaigns to provide information on certain healthissues.
Supports developing countries with major health issuessuch as AIDS.
Raise awareness of health issues
To assess the health status of populations.

DHSSPS(NI) Department of Health, SocialServices & Public Saftey (Northern Ireland)
The DHSSPS was established by the the Departments(NI) in 1999
The DHSSPS is one of 11 NI departments created in1999 as part of the NI Executive by the NI Act 1998 &the departments (NI) order 1999.
It is the department's mission to improve the healthand social well-being of the people of NI
It endeavours to do so by - Leading a major programme of cross-government
action to improve the health & well-being of thepopulation & reduce health inequalities.

This includes interventions involving health promotionand education to encourage people to adopt activities,behaviours and attitudes which lead to better health
and well-being The aim is a popluation which is much more engaged
in ensuring its own health and well-being
Ensuring the provision of appropriate health and socialcare services, both in clinical settings such ashospitals and GP surgeries, and in the communitythrough nursing, social work and other professionalservices.
The department has 3 main business responsibilites:
Health and social care (HSC) which includes policyand legislation for hospitals, family practitionerservices and community health and personal socialservicess;

Public Health, which covers policy, legislationand administrative action to promote andprotect the health and well-being of thepopulation; and
Public Safety, which covers policy andlegislation for fire and rescue services.
