Four things toknow aboutpreventingMSD: Findings from PREMUS 2016

In June 400 researchers and other experts attended the 9th

International Research Conference on the Prevention of

Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders - aka PREMUS2016 in Toronto. Hosted by the Institute for Work & Health, theconference featured four keynote speakers who broughtimportant messages about the prevention of MSD at work:

1. To reduce the health and injury risks of prolongedsitting, workers should change posture often andaim to stand and sit for equal amounts of time overthe course of a workday. - Dr. Jack Callaghan,University of Waterloo

2. Workers who often use their hands in forcefulgripping and pinching motions face a higher risk ofdeveloping carpal tunnel syndrome than workersdoing low-force repetitive work with their hands (e.g.computer users). - Dr. Bradley Evanoff, WashingtonUniversity School of Medicine in St. Louis.

3. Women who do the same tasks as men often face ahigher risk of musculoskeletal disorders in theirneck and upper limbs, which may be due to bothbiological (sex) differences as well as differences insocial roles, activities and behaviours (gender). - Dr.Julie Côté, McGill University

4. Research shows that stretch-and-flex programs maynot directly reduce MSD, but they may have otherpositive effects on safety climate and other safetyoutcomes. Dr. Linda Goldenhar, CPWR-the Center forConstruction Research and Training
