Health Science and Medical Technology Syllabus HOUSTON HIGH Fall & Spring 2018-2019 TO: Parents & Guardians, Your child has enrolled in one or more of the Medical Health Science courses. I am excited about the new school year! The Health Science Education Program is taught by medical professional Danita Mullings- Medical Technologist -BS. This program is designed to introduce the students to the vast array of health careers available today. The students will obtain hands-on training and learn what is required to become a health care professional. Over the course of this program the students will learn how to conduct themselves in a professional manner and to work independently. This goal can only be accomplished if the student abides by classroom policies. Please review this plan with your child, sign in the appropriate space, and return by Friday, August 10, 2018. Your child will be given a syllabus to the course and the competencies that we will be covering throughout the school year. We would like for you to read through all of the information and sign corresponding forms. I look forward to working closely with you and your child this school year. PROCEDURE/ POLICES FOR LAPTOP USE 1. There should be no use of the computers without permission. 2. There should be no checking of E-mails in class unless using school provided E-mail

and permission has been granted. 3. There should be no inappropriate use of the laptops, including watching videos,

messaging, or preparing work for another class. 4. Laptops will be used in class to support instruction, students should refrain from off-

task behavior that may impede learning or a successful classroom environment. 5. Students who choose not to follow the above polices will be referral to the office for

insubordination

PROCEDURE FOR CHECKING OUT CLASSROOM MATERIALS 1. Document name, date, type of material, and identifying number of the material on the

appropriate form. 2. Sign the material back in on the form the next day.

*Please be careful and responsible with the materials that you take from the classroom

PROCEDURE for Medical Terminology Notebook 1. Students must have a small Composition book to use as a Medical terminology

notebook. 2. The assigned Medical terminology vocabulary words should be defined and kept

neatly in this notebook in an organized manner. 3. The Medical terminology notebook should be used as a reference material and as a

study guide for tests. 4. The notebook will be checked at the end of each week and counted as part of the

class participation grade.

GENERAL CLASSROOM PROCEDURES 1. Be on Time and prepared with all books and material to school each day 2. Check the board for the daily journal assignment (to be completed within 10

minutes of start of class). Turn in all assignments by placing them in the appropriate tray.

3. Turn in all assignments by the due date and time for full credit. (1 day late = 10 points deducted from the assignment; 2 days late = 20 points deducted from the assignment; no credit given after day 3.)

4. Turn in all homework assignments upon entering class. 5. Pick up any missed assignments from the appropriate tray.

Any missed assignment is the responsibility of the student. (An absence is only excused if a note from the parents, teacher, or home school office is received.) Turn in all make-up assignments within (*)days after the absence to receive full credit. *- 1 day absence = 1day make up, 2 day absence = 2 day make up ……

6. PLEASE CHECK ABSENT FOLDERS, IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO GET MAKE UP ASSIGNMENTS.

7. Act respectfully and responsibly in the classroom discussions by taking turns when speaking and quietly listening as others talk.

8. Quietly finish the daily assignment and/or work on any other existing assignments after turning in tests or other assignments. Give respect to those that have not finished.

9. The hall pass must be used whenever the students are out of the classroom. 10. Follow the appropriate procedures when using the medical equipment and

materials. The directions will be given before each lab is performed. 11. When using the Laptop/ class computers, follow the posted computer

procedure. 12. Follow the appropriate safety precautions when working with any lab

equipment. The precautions for each individual lab will be explained before the lab is performed.

13. The vocabulary/ medical terms notebooks should be kept updated, neat, and organized.

14. Thoroughly clean your work area everyday before the end of class. 15. Remain quietly seated and wait for any instructions before dismissal. (No

student should wait by the door for the bell to ring.) 16. Absolutely, NO Cell Phones during class! Students may possess

personal communication devices on school property as long as the devices are turned off and stored in backpacks or personal carry-alls during class time. Cell phones/ apple watches will be taken up and place in a cell phone wall pocket before a test or quiz. Any Students who choose not to follow the cell phone class policy will be referral to the office for insubordination.

If a student chooses to break a rule, the following corrective actions will be implemented: First time Warning Second time Action plan and conference with teacher Third time Parental contact and referral to office Fourth time Referral to office

MedicalTherapeuticsisanappliedcoursedesignedtopreparestudentstopursuecareersintherapeuticandnursingservices.Uponcompletionofthiscourse,aproficientstudentwillbeabletoidentifycareersintherapeuticsservices;assess,monitor,evaluate,andreportpatient/clienthealthstatus;andidentifythepurposeandcomponentsoftreatments.

Criteria for Grading Conduct Grading Scale: E = Excellent A = 93-100 (Excellent) S = Satisfactory B = 85-92 (Good) N = Needs Improvement C = 75-84 (Satisfactory) U = Unsatisfactory D = 70-74 (Poor but passing interventions required) F = 0-69 (Failure = Failure to meet expectations – interventions required) Grade Components: Criteria for Grading The assessment of student academic achievement to determine a grade must be documented. The grading criteria shall include documentation of all of the following:

• 10% Homework • 20% Class Participation (does not refer to student conduct) • 20% Class work/Daily work (refers to a formative demonstration of the student’s ability

and includes projects, reports, presentations) • 15% Labs • 35% Assessments (refers to a student’s culminating, independent demonstration of

mastery of one or more competencies) Assessments can include: - Test scores - Quizzes - Exhibitions - Portfolios of student work - Demonstrations - Projects - Online assessments - Performances - Competency assessments related to Career and Technical Education * Cheating of any kind will result in a zero. CLASSROOM POLICIES 1. ATTENDANCE- It is important that the student has regular class attendance. A class sign-

in sheet will be provided for the student to sign-in every day. (This is done to simulate the procedure used when working in an actual healthcare field.) Each student is required to report immediately class. In case of absence, it is the student’s responsibility to obtain all lecture material and assignments. If the student is absent on the day of an exam, he/she needs to arrange a time with the instructor to make up that exam. Make up work will be given for excused absences only.

2. ATTIRE- These classes are designed to introduce you into all aspects of the field of health care, including professional dress. The student must wear shoes with closed heels and toes on the days that labs will be performed. All students will be required to purchase a lab jacket and scrubs. The Scrubs and lab jacket is to be worn and scored once a week ( day TBA).

3. ATMOSPHERE- All students are required to respect authority figures, the equipment, themselves, and others. No student will operate any of the equipment without the permission of the instructor. There will be no eating or drinking in the classroom. Daily cleaning of your work area is required. General housekeeping will be done on Friday. Due to the nature of our work, safety is everyone’s responsibility. Horseplay, excessive talking, or other distracting behavior will not be tolerated. Students are on the honor system; violations, such as cheating, will result in disciplinary action.
