Keeping You Safe ...At City College Plymouth our first aid, health and safety, and manual handling courses aim to provide employees with the skills and knowledge in order to work effectively and with confidence.

Courses are regularly updated to reflect the changing needs of the health and care sectors and lead to qualifications that are nationally recognised and valued by employers. Many of our courses are accessible and flexible for full-time employees, and many can be tailored to a specific subject area, or to an organisation.

An approved centre for the Health and Safety Executive and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health, City College Plymouth offers industry recognised qualifications, delivered by tutors with a wealth of workplace experience.

This guide will give you all the information about the courses and training you need in order for your business to meet legislative requirements, whilst also protecting your customers and your workforce.

Bespoke Short CoursesIf you can’t find the course you want in this guide, and have a particular requirement regarding course content or structure, then our team of experienced, professional trainers can work with you to develop a course that suits your needs.

Delivered at a time and place to suit you!It isn’t always convenient to release people from the workplace on consecutive days in one working week. With this in mind, we aim to run our courses over a period of time that suits you and your organisation - even if it’s during the evening or at weekends.

One of the main advantages of sending staff for College-based training is the lack of disruption to workplace operations and whilst we have superb facilities available to you at the College, we can also customise practical skills training for delivery at your premises should this be preferable to you.

Call our team on 01752 305026 to discuss how we can tailor our courses to suit your needs.

First Aid Courses Please note: the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) will no longer be responsible for the approval or monitoring of first aid training providers from 6 April 2013. From that date City College Plymouth will continue to deliver first aid courses to the high standards set by the HSE, however these courses will be certificated by the College. The HSE has been working with Ofqual, SQA and ‘Skills for Life’ (the relevant sector skills council) to develop the educational standard needed to ensure that the syllabus for the new Awarding Body Qualification is in line with that currently in use. The College will also be able to offer these accredited qualifications.

Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

Federation of First Aid Training Organisations (FOFATO)

The majority of our first aid courses are approved by the HSE - the national independent watchdog for work-related health, safety and illness. The HSE does not approve automatic external defibrillator training or paediatric first aid, however these courses are delivered by HSE approved trainers who work to the UK Resus Council guidelines. City College Plymouth is on the approved trainers’ register for paediatric training - the Federation of First Aid Training Organisations (FOFATO). City College Plymouth is a Plymouth City Council approved paediatric first aid training organisation.

Curious Kittens Nursery approached the College to deliver a specialist course in paediatric first aid which could be tailored to their needs of caring for the health, safety and wellbeing of children from birth to five years.

The objectives of the training were to fulfil the statutory requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage for nursery practitioners, and to give a thorough overview of the basic and important elements of first aid.

In order to accommodate 24 members of staff and ensure that the day-to-day running of the nursery was not affected, Nursery Manager, Julie Griffiths, requested that training took place on consecutive Saturdays with a Saturday ‘off’ in between, run over two separate sessions.

“The course really exceeded my expectations”, said Julie. “It was booked to our particular specifications in terms of date and venue, and my team really enjoyed the training, finding it to be comprehensive and pitched at an appropriate level. They are now confident that they could deal competently and confidently in a first aid situation.”

“Whilst completing the first aid course at the College I thought about how great it would be to combine the two things I enjoy - working with young people and first aid. I thought it would be really good if I could teach young people first aid and have been pursuing this ambition. The first aid course at the College was really relaxed and friendly, with tutors who were having fun whilst teaching; I know that’s what I want to be like when I teach it to young people!

“To build up my teaching experience, I have spent time volunteering with the College’s Work-based Learning team where I quickly realised that educating young people can be about finding alternative ways of communicating, encouraging and supporting students. I have been working as a learning support assistant since December 2010 have now secured work with the College as a first aid trainer.”

Moving and Handling CoursesUnder the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers are required to take appropriate steps to reduce the risk of injury to employees - this includes suitable training. Our College certificated courses combine both theoretical and hands-on elements of the subject in order to teach suitable techniques to lift, carry, push and pull objects and/or people safely within the limits of their individual capability. All of our moving and handling courses can be tailored to business and individual needs to make learning relevant and fit for purpose.

Our moving and handling courses are taught by either Chartered Institute for Environmental Health (CIEH) approved trainers or NHS trained trainers. They follow the guidance of the All Wales Manual Handling Training Passport and Information Scheme. The development of one ‘All Wales’ scheme was facilitated through a partnership between the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the All Wales NHS Manual Handling Steering Group, the Welsh Local Government Association/Syniad Manual Handling Sub Group and the Care Forum Wales. Health and safety inspectors seek to secure compliance with the law and may refer to this guidance as illustrating good practice.

The REATCH Centre in Plymouth, which is part of Plymouth City Council, is an adult social care service that provides care for people with sensory impairments, disabilities, or with acquired brain injuries.

The team at the Centre completed a first aid mobility and handling course with City College Plymouth, which was organised through Plymouth City Council’s training department. As part of the training they received advice and guidance about how to administer certain first aid techniques to people who have reduced mobility and complex health care needs.

John Casey, Unit Manager at the Reatch Centre said: “We specified our needs to the College and they were able to provide us with the training that we needed, and in our own workplace too. This was really helpful to us, especially as it was only a small team of staff who were undergoing the training.

“The course was tailored to provide solutions to the problems that our team faces, and the tutor was able to answer questions and advise on particular issues.

“The course suited our needs perfectly. The team now feel confident in their own abilities, and that they can deliver the first aid to the clients in often trickycircumstances.”
