This one day course is designed to provide essential knowledge and understanding of the principles of person centred care. The course is based around planning care and will give advice on how to carry out a process of planning, goal setting and show the importance of individualised care planning. Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults

This one day course is designed to provide essential knowledge and a greater understanding of Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults. This awareness course is based around the roles and boundaries for carers, danger, harm and abuse, social norms and values, legislation and applying learning to practice.

Dementia Awareness

This one day course has been designed to provide essential knowledge and understanding of dementia. The course will cover; how to support individuals, roles, responsibilities and boundaries, defining dementia, legislation and guidance.

Health & Safety CoursesMoving & Handling in Care

This one day course is aimed at delegates working within a care establishment where moving and handling is seen as part of their everyday role.

The course will involve theory, practical demonstration and activities which will help assist individuals from sitting and lying positions. Practical equipment such as slide sheets, wheel chairs and walking frames to assist with mobility will also be covered.

Cost - £50.00 per person

Common Induction Training This four day course is aimed at staff working in social series, residential care, day care, domiciliary care, personal assistants, shared lives workers and those who are involved in the provision of direct care.

The course covers the Common Induction Standards 2010 for all new staff working in care services. Some of the topics covered are: Standard 1 – The Role of the Health & Social Care Worker Standard 2 – Personal Development Standard 3 – Effective CommunicationStandard 4 – Equality and Inclusion Standard 5 – Principals for Implementing Duty of Care Standard 6 – Principals of Safeguarding Standard 7 – Person Centred Support Standard 8 – Health & Safety in an Adult Setting

First Aid CoursesEmergency First Aid (Formerly the Appointed Person First Aid Certificate)

This programme is aimed at individuals who work within a low risk environment.

This one day course is for those with responsibility for managing emergency situations at work. The programme is an introduction to First Aid at Work with a view to lessening the severity of accidents by giving staff the capability to take control of given situations.

Cost - £50.00 per person

First Aid at Work

This three day course is specifically designed to meet the needs of businesses where it is a requirement to have a fully qualified First Aid Person at all times.Upon completion delegates are covered for three years, however the Health and Safety Executives (HSE) Code of Practice advises attending the half day First Aid Annual Update course each year.

Cost – £140.00 per person

First Aid at Work Re-qualifying

This two day course is essential for those holding a three year First Aid certificate nearing expiry. Delegates will be accepted on the course within the last three months validity of their current certificate or 28 days after expiry date. Please note certificates must be produced as evidence on commencement of the course. Assessment is made by short multiple choice examination.

Cost - £75.00 per person

First Aid Annual Update

The HSE now recommend that all First Aiders attend annual refresher training. This half day course provides an annual update for those who have completed the three day First Aid at Work course.

CIEH Foundation Certificate in Health and Safety in the Workplace

This one day course, accredited by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH), is a Level 2 Award in Health and Safety in the workplace. The course can be tailored to business and individual needs to ensure that the learning experience is relevant.

Assessment is made by a short multiple choice examination. This course is run on a regular basis throughout the year.

Cost - £50.00 per person

Food Safety Courses

CIEH Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering

This Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) certificate is essential for people who handle food or come into contact with food as part of their work. This one day course is designed for delegates who are working in an environment where food is prepared, cooked and handled.

Cost - £62.00 per person

CIEH Level 2 Food Safety Refresher

This half day course is aimed at individuals who have taken the CIEH Level 2 Award in Food Safety. It is a recommendation that candidates take a refresher course three years after completion of the Food Safety Level 2 Course.

All candidates will be required to produce their original Food Safety Level 2 certificates on the day of the course, as these will be sent back to the awarding body for renewal. The Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene or Basic Food Hygiene certificates will not be accepted by CIEH.

Cost - £40.00 per person

CIEH Level 2 Award in Healthier Eating and Special Diets

The CIEH has launched the CIEH Level 2 Award in Healthier Food and Special Diets course.

The qualification covers the following topics: • The relationship between nutrition, diet and health • The nutritional requirements of different ethnic groups • Current policy, legislation and voluntary guidelines • The effects of food processing on nutrient content • Nutrition labelling

Distance Learning PackagesBlackburn College are pleased to offer distance learning packages which are awarded by the Northern Council for Further Education (NCFE). Individuals will be provided with a support assessor who will contact you via email and telephone.

Level 2 NCFE Certificate in Working with People withMental Health Issues

This course is aimed at post 18 learners working in healthcare settings within the public, private, voluntary and community sectors, and will enhance learners’ understanding of mental distress, providing some of the knowledge required to deliver person-centred and hope-inspiring mental healthcare.

Cost - £350.00 per person

Level 2 NCFE Certificate in Dementia Awareness

This course is designed for anyone who wishes to improve their knowledge and understanding of dementia. It will provide learners with an understanding of the common types of dementia and help learners to develop an awareness of the support framework that exists for people with dementia.

Level 2 NCFE Award in Prevention and Control of Infection

This course is designed for any candidate working in an environment that links closely to infection control policy. The course will help to raise awareness of infection control legislation and policies. Cost - £300.00 per person

Level 2 NCFE Certificate in the Provision of Activities in a Care Setting

This course is aimed at individuals who work in the healthcare sector who are responsible for co-ordinating and delivering activities in a care setting. The course aims to increase individual workers’ knowledge and skills in planning and carrying out activities, thereby enhancing the quality of care that service users experience.

Level 2 NCFE Award in Nutrition and Health

This course outlines the basic principles of healthy eating and examines the nutritional needs of a variety of individuals. Learners will gain an understanding of nutrition and the role of food in maintaining good health, which will enable them to plan a healthy diet for themselves and others.

Level 3 NCFE Certificate in the Principles of End of Life Care

This course will provide learners with an understanding of the principles of palliative care, encouraging them to take a person-centred approach to meet the emotional, spiritual and social needs of people who are nearing the end of life and their families.

Level 3 NCFE Certificate in Diabetes Awareness

This course is aimed at delegates who work in the healthcare sector and wish to increase their awareness of diabetes in order to support their service users. The Skills for Life programme is for anyone who wishes to improve their Maths and/or English skills and gain a nationally recognised qualification up to Level 2 (GCSE grade A-C equivalent). This may be for use in daily life, work or in further studies.
