The FHSC is made up of three departments: HealthProfessional Studies, Nursing and Midwifery, andCommunity Health and Social Care. As shown in thetable below, each department has responsibility fordeveloping and managing a number of postgraduateprogrammes and pathways within the HealthProfessional Studies Framework.There is cross-departmental cooperation and collaboration withinthe faculty, ensuring that delivery teams comprisethose staff with the most relevant knowledge andspecialist skills.

Recent developments include the Centre forSpirituality Studies, which is dedicated to enhancingresearch and the teaching of issues related tospirituality; the Centre for Clinical Skills, whichprovides clinical skills training to members of thehealth and social care community; and the Institute ofWound Care, a multidisciplinary centre whichprovides education and training to members of thehealth and social care community.

Postgraduate students within the FHSC have accessto a host of University facilities and services. Oncampus, the Brynmor Jones Library offers all thepaper and electronic resources that you wouldexpect from a modern university library.Teachingrooms and lecture theatres within the University areequipped with a range of audiovisual equipment toenhance your learning environment. For thosepostgraduate courses with a practical element, theFHSC also possesses a number of classroomsdedicated to clinical skills training and patientsimulation.

Registration with the FHSC gives you access to arange of online services.You will be supplied with aUniversity email account, and have full-text access tomany health, social care and scientific journals.TheFHSC also uses a virtual learning environment (VLE)to provide online access to course content,announcements and discussion boards.This VLEallows many postgraduate courses to be deliveredeither partly or wholly as distance learning or e-learning.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThis exciting new international online programmerecognises the diversity of the ageing experience andthe agency of older people. It values the contributionthat older people make to society and their immensepotential. It stresses the importance of successfulintergenerational relationships in the provision ofeffective, high-quality services and support to olderpeople across the globe. It also focuses on the olderperson’s cultural and spiritual needs alongside theirphysical and psychosocial ones.

If individual circumstances dictate, students can stepoff the programme with either a PostgraduateCertificate or a Postgraduate Diploma.

PROGRAMME CONTENTThe teaching team adopt a flexible approach that isled by the students’ own learning needs and learningstyles, fostering a strongly collaborative,interdisciplinary and interagency approach to theprovision of support and services to older peoplewithin society.The programme is open to all thosewho work with older people and can lead to theirinfluencing individual, local, national and global policyto transform the experience of older people.

ASSESSMENTEach module is assessed individually.We use a varietyof assessment strategies that are designed to enablestudents to demonstrate their learning and link it totheir work with older people and with the onlineactivities undertaken. In the final dissertation, studentsare expected to produce a larger piece of writing -under supervision – that relates directly to theirwork with older people.

SPECIAL FEATURESAcross the faculty, programmes and modules aredeveloped to meet local as well as national demandsand policy changes.This programme is also specificallydesigned to meet the needs of students who workwith older people within the internationalcommunity.The quality of learning opportunities wasassessed as commendable by the QAA at the lastMajor Review of the faculty.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEDeveloped as part of the NHS Changing WorkforceProgramme and recognised by the Royal College ofAnaesthetists, this Postgraduate Diploma presents anexciting career development opportunity. As a newmember of the anaesthesia team you will work witha consultant anaesthesiologist to provide anaesthesiasafely and effectively for patients undergoing a widevariety of surgical procedures. On qualifying, traineeswill form part of a national programme to evaluatethe effectiveness of anaesthesia practitioners inEngland.

The programme is aimed at professionals alreadyworking in the NHS who are looking for a newchallenge. Graduates with biomedical or biologicalscience backgrounds who have not consideredworking in a clinical environment would also benefitfrom new career opportunities afforded by thisqualification. Eligible candidates can progress toachieve a Masters degree in anaesthesia practice.

PROGRAMME CONTENTThe themes of the programme relate to thedevelopment of cognitive, affective and psychomotorskills along with clinical competencies required ofqualified anaesthesia practitioners.You will study theanatomy and physiology of a number of bodilysystems – including the respiratory, cardiovascularendocrine and nervous systems – and apply this toanaesthesia practice.You will learn how to take a fullanaesthetic history from patients and how to safelymanage the preparation and maintenance of patientsundergoing anaesthesia. including monitoring theenvironment and associated anaesthetic equipment.Risk assessment, clinical decision making and problemsolving are skills that will be developed.You will havethe opportunity to work in an interprofessionalenvironment while experiencing a number ofspecialist clinical rotations and being supported by aclinical supervisor in simulated and real clinicalsituations.

SPECIAL FEATURESThis prestigious programme is recognised by theRoyal College of Anaesthetists and is one of onlythree in the country. Currently it is part of a nationalprogramme to evaluate the effectiveness ofanaesthesia practice in England. Effective partnershipworking is a feature of this programme, and thereare strong links between the faculty and the NHStrusts that provide placements and clinicalsupervisors for students.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThe programme provides an MSc framework tofacilitate study within colonoscopy.The pathwaycomprises 60 discipline-specific credits, with theremainder shared across clinically related pathways.Students from a variety of backgrounds arewelcomed to embrace the sharing of knowledge andexpertise within an inter-professional framework.Theprogramme provides appropriately qualified andexperienced students with the opportunity todevelop their knowledge, skills and attitudes and toexplore and critically evaluate the theoretical andpractical aspects of colonoscopy.

The programme is offered either full- or part-timeand adopts a blended approach, with the majoritybeing delivered online and supplemented by studydays.This provides greater opportunities for studentsto access the programme from remote locations andavoid many of the challenges facing the NHS inrelation to releasing individuals for study.

PROGRAMME CONTENTThe pathway contains specific modules of studywhich provide students with the necessary extendedknowledge, skills and attitudes to practise effectively,safely and competently within colonoscopy practice.Students undertake studies in clinical research,advanced critical thinking and the provision ofeducation within clinical practice.

Students extend their current skills base to includespecialised skills within colonoscopy – extendingcognitive, affective and psychomotor skills in relationto colonoscopy in the context of research, education,critical awareness and reflection.The programmeprovides the opportunity for individuals to engagewith principles of inter-professional learning andworking and with emerging new roles in the NHS.

SPECIAL FEATURESThe programme has strong links with the local acuteNHS trust and is facilitated in partnership with thelocal JAG-accredited endoscopy training centre.Thedepartment has significant experience in the deliveryof endoscopic provision, undergraduate endoscopicprogrammes having been available for the last 12years. Individuals can select certain modules on astand-alone basis as part of continuing professionaldevelopment.

RESEARCH AREASThere are a number of research projects under wayin collaboration with the NHS partner, with furtheropportunities existing to extend the research base.

ADMISSIONSApplicants for the Colonoscopy pathway must beeligible for registration with the Joint AccreditationGroup for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (JAG) andhave access to relevant hands-on training orexperience with suitably qualified supervisors/trainerswithin a relevant health care centre which canprovide training at the applicant’s base institution.Applicants are also required to provide evidence offull health clearance and an up-to-date CriminalRecords Bureau check (within the six months leadingup to commencement of the programme).

Students must also provide evidence of an up-to-date occupational health questionnaire to allow themaccess to hands-on practical training.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThe Generic MSc pathway is designed to meet theneeds of a range of health and social careprofessionals who are already practising at anadvanced level or aspire to do so.The modules aimto provide the student with a toolkit of knowledgeand critical thinking skills to support advancedpractice and enhance patient/client care. Practitionerswho successfully complete this programme candemonstrate to their employers that they areknowledgeable and capable practitioners, able tocontribute to the development of evidence-basedpractice.

If individual circumstances dictate, it is possible forstudents to step off the programme with either aPostgraduate Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma.

PROGRAMME CONTENTThis programme’s generic nature means that it issuitable for a range of different health and social carepractitioners, the modules studied being equallyapplicable in a range of different care or worksettings.The content covers a range of differenttopics and knowledge bases relevant tocontemporary practice. It is expected that (withsupport from tutorial staff) students will identifyareas of interest pertinent to their area of practiceand apply the module content.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThis programme is primarily designed for nurses whowould like to take on the role of assessing students’fitness for practice as a specialist community publichealth nurse, specialist practitioner or advancednurse practitioner. By completion, practitioners willbe facilitating and assessing learning in academic andpractice settings at an advanced level.This presentsopportunities for those interested in the pedagogy ofprofessional practice who wish to develop theircareers as educators.This Postgraduate Certificatecan be the first step towards a Postgraduate Diplomaor an MSc in Health Professional Studies.

PROGRAMME CONTENTThere is a combination of University-based andwork-based learning activity.The two theory modulesare based around four themed study days coveringthe context of practice; establishing effective workingrelationships; evidence-based practice; leadership;creating an environment for learning; facilitation oflearning; assessment and accountability; andevaluation of learning.The learning methods usedinclude workshops, discussions, group work and leadlectures.You are expected to take an active part inyour learning. A virtual learning environment isextensively used to support learning and teachingactivities.The work-based module involves beingplaced with an experienced practice teacher whofacilitates your access to an appropriate student, andwho is responsible for supervising your progress and‘signing off ’ your achievement of the learningoutcomes.Working in an inter-professional learningenvironment and supporting other mentors in theirroles are important features of the programme.

OPTIONAL MODULESThere are no optional modules for this stage of theprogramme. Should applicants wish to register forthe Postgraduate Diploma or MSc programme,planning with the programme leader will help themto identify the best options to choose.

FURTHER MODULE INFORMATIONFor the Specialist Practice Teaching module,applicants must be supervised by a qualified andexperienced practice teacher. Availability of thispractice teacher will be confirmed before theprogramme starts.

ASSESSMENTA number of different assessment strategies areused, including a written strategy, participation ingroup presentations, self- and peer review andcompletion of a portfolio to demonstrateachievement of learning outcomes in practice.

SPECIAL FEATURESThis programme is approved by the NMC, and onsuccessful completion practitioners can gain entry tothe live practice teacher register held in the Facultyof Health and Social Care. Key components of theNHS Knowledge and Skills Framework areembedded in the programme, enabling successfulstudents to demonstrate that they meet milestonesfor pay progression.The programme also meets therequirements for Level 3 mentor preparationidentified by the Association of OperatingDepartment Practitioners.

RESEARCH AREASActive research themes in the department arespirituality, maternal and child health, wound care andeducation. Opportunities for research collaborationwith other faculties and departments are possible.

ENTRY CRITERIAYou should have a current entry on the same part orsub-part of the Nursing and Midwifery Councilregister as the students that you will be assessing.Youshould have developed your knowledge, skills andcompetence beyond registration and gained aspecialist practitioner qualification relevant to yourfield of practice: specialist community public healthnursing or community nursing in the home (districtnursing), for example.You shoud have priorexperience as a mentor/assessor, having previouslyundertaken preparation for this role. Evidence ofrecent academic study (normally within the last fiveyears) is also required.

Enquiries about this programme from practitioners inother practice-based and clinical programmes such asmedicine, ODP, pharmacy and sport science andrehabilitation are encouraged.

The aim of the Professional DevelopmentQualification Scheme (PDQS) is to give you anopportunity to study a ‘stand-alone’ module at Level7 on a specific area of interest without having tocommit to a full programme of study. Onceregistered on the programme, which lasts for oneacademic year, you can access up to three modules.Some students also use the scheme to find outwhether they can study successfully at Level 7 beforeembarking on a full postgraduate programme.Thefaculty offers modules in Semesters 1 and 2, andapplicants can select one or more modules fromthose listed in the table.

Modules successfully completed as part of the PDQScan at a later date be counted as prior certificatedlearning towards the achievement of another awardsuch as a Postgraduate Certificate, PostgraduateDiploma or MSc qualification.The requirements ofthe University’s Accreditation of Prior Learningscheme must be met in order to progress to ahigher award, as students must be able to fulfil theentry criteria for that programme.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMESpirituality studies is a rapidly growing field.TheUniversity of Hull has established a distinctive identityin this field through its Centre for Spirituality Studies,focusing on the interdisciplinary complexity ofspirituality and the development of correspondinggeneric methodologies and theories.

The programme is offered in the Department ofHumanities but is designed to meet the needs ofpractitioners in the areas of health, education andsocial work who wish to extend their knowledge andunderstanding of spirituality.The degree developsskills in recognising spiritual needs in the context ofsuch professional services. Staff from Nursing,Education and Social Work contribute to theteaching of the programme.

The degree can be studied either full-time over oneyear or part-time over two.The part-time routeenables students to combine their studies with theirnormal employment.

Students can obtain a 60-credit Advanced Certificate,a 120-credit Advanced Diploma or a 180-credit MAin Spirituality Studies.

PROGRAMME CONTENTStudents learn the concepts and methodologiesnecessary to study different spiritualities.The multi-faceted nature of spirituality means that it must bestudied from a range of perspectives, includingsociology, psychology, anthropology, philosophy,hermeneutics and theology.

You will study research literature, policydocumentation and guidelines on spirituality mostrelevant to your own specialist area.You will beintroduced to contemporary debates concerningspirituality and the emerging research agendas ineducational studies, nursing and social work.Meanwhile you will also develop research andpresentational skills.

Students wishing to obtain a Masters degree mustcomplete, under supervision, a 15,000-worddissertation worth 60 credits.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThis programme is designed for senior nurses inclinical practice or education who wish to study atdoctoral level and who wish to learn to use researchas a means of developing practice.The DNSci isequivalent to a PhD but is more structured andoffers more support. Students complete modules inthe first two years which contribute directly to thethesis undertaken in Years 3, 4 and 5.

PROGRAMME CONTENT180 credits need to be completed over the first twoyears.The thesis (Years 3, 4 and 5) is equivalent to360 credits. Unless otherwise stated, the modules inYears 1 and 2 are valued at 20 credits.

The programme is structured to enable nursesresident in countries outside the UK to register.Attendance in the UK is required only for the threeone-week semester schools per calendar year.

It is aimed atprofessionals who wish to develop advancedresearch skills with the aim of being independentresearchers. As such, it is suitable for practitionerswhose role involves a significant element of research(such as nurse consultants), or for those who wish todevelop a career in higher education.Theprogramme is available by full- or part-time study.The programme involves a significant element ofresearch training, leading to a PostgraduateCertificate or Diploma in research.

COURSE CONTENTYou will undertake an extended independentinvestigation under the guidance of an academicsupervisor. A PhD is the ultimate form of student-centred learning. Although you meet regularly withyour supervisor and other postgraduate researchstudents in the faculty and the Graduate School, youalso need the ability and motivation to workindependently.The precise scope of your investigationis negotiated with your supervisor as part of theapplication process. During the programme youlearn research methods, project management skills,skills of independent working, and advanced writingand presentation techniques.You also develop anadvanced theoretical knowledge of your subject area.As part of the programme, you select from a rangeof modules provided by the University as part of the PGTS.

ASSESSMENTAt the end of the programme you produce a thesisof up to 100,000 words which describes yourresearch in detail.You then have a formal oralexamination consisting of questions about yourresearch, put to you by two examiners who areexperts in your field.

In addition, yousubmit a dissertation to the value of 120 credits. Ifyou wish, you may use the MRes as a basis for aPhD.This programme is ideal for those who have aclear interest in research but do not yet wish tocommit themselves to a full PhD. It is suitable forpractitioners whose role involves a significantelement of research (such as nurse consultants orclinical specialists, or those aspiring to these roles), orthose who wish to develop a career in highereducation. The programme is available by full- orpart-time study.

PROGRAMME CONTENTYou undertake modules to the value of 60 credits inresearch methods, including qualitative and qualitativeapproaches.The modules are selected from thoseavailable with the advice of your supervisor and theDirector of Postgraduate Studies.You also submit adissertation of 25,000–30,000 words on a researchtopic negotiated with your supervisor at the time ofyour application.The dissertation should contain anintroduction, literature review, research questions anddiscussion of methodological issues, and is weightedat 120 credits. During the programme you learnabout different research methods, projectmanagement skills, skills of independent working, andskills in writing and presentation.You also developyour theoretical knowledge of your subject area.

The FHSC has a research infrastructure which drawsupon all the resources available in the widerUniversity and beyond. Postgraduate researchstudents benefit from the facilities of the GraduateSchool and are required to undertake modulesforming part of the PostgraduateTraining Scheme.This sits alongside faculty-based opportunitiesoffering postgraduate students the opportunity toattend at least one research-focused event per week.Statistical support and advice is available to studentsrequiring it. Our researchers have recently movedinto newly refurbished accommodation withexcellent facilities for seminars and modern ITprovision.

The faculty strives to foster internationallycompetitive research, promote interdisciplinary workand maintain a culture of scholarship. As highlightedfor postgraduate teaching, there is cross-departmental cooperation and collaborationalongside a strong focus on interdisciplinary researchand the provision of training.We collaborate onresearch-related activities with a range of facultiesand departments, including the Hull York MedicalSchool, the Postgraduate Medical Institute, theInstitute for Learning, the Institute for Applied Ethics,and the Departments of Sport, Health and ExerciseScience, Chemistry, Social Work, Psychology,Education and Theology.There are also establishedlinks with the Hull and East Yorkshire NHS Trust andthe North Lincolnshire and Goole NHS FoundationTrust.

Research within the faculty is methodologically broadand can therefore support students interested inquantitative, qualitative and mixed/multi-methodresearch. Research output is generated under threemain scholarly headings:

Spirituality researchThe FHSC has led the development of theUniversity’s Interdisciplinary Spirituality Group (ISG).The ISG’s membership is drawn from Nursing,Theology, Social Work and Education (among others)and is active in researching contemporary spiritualityin a health care setting.The faculty has beeninstrumental in establishing a formal Centre forSpirituality Studies within the University. Cochrane reviewsCochrane reviews are of considerable importance inleading health care practice. Some of our staff haveexpertise in the preparation and undertaking ofCochrane reviews, and training in the methodologyof Cochrane reviewing is available. Disability, equality and diversityA number of interdisciplinary collaborative projects,principally concerned with disability, are ongoingwithin the faculty. The history of nursingThere is expertise within the department on thehistory of nursing, and a national collaborativeproject is currently under development to explorethe changing nature of paediatric nursing. ABOUT THE PROGRAMMEThe Leadership pathway reflects recent NHS andsocial and health policy, which identifies effectiveleadership as a means to improve quality and achievegoals outlined in the NHS Plan and other significantpolicy documents.The pathway is aimed at anyprofessionals working in health or social care whohave a leadership element to their role or arelooking to develop their career in this direction.Successful completion of this programme cantherefore create numerous career opportunities.

If individual circumstances dictate, it is possible forstudents to step off the programme with either aPostgraduate Certificate or a Postgraduate Diploma.

PROGRAMME CONTENTThis pathway develops the individual's leadershippotential and their ability to meet the challengespresented by constant change in service provision.Building influence in organisations is an importantaspect, and learning is facilitated through a work-based project which allows students to demonstratewhat they have learnt about leadership.
