Panama was once a most unhealthy place. When the

“fortyniners” trekked across the jungle, headed for California, and the tracks of the first transcon-tinental railroad were being laid from Colon to Panama City, tropi-cal diseases were rife.

Making the isthmus a healthy place was one of the first priori-ties as the USA began to dig the Canal and the American doctors not only eradicated yellow fever, malaria and typhoid, they inspired generations of Panamanian phy-sicians to train in the USA and Europe and return to their home-land to build hospitals equipped with the latest technology.

One hospital in Panama riding the medical tourism wave is

Hospital Punta Pacifica. Recent-ly Panama’s Tourism Minister, Ruben Blades, took part in the launching of the hospitals medi-cal tourism program.

The hospital is located in Punta Pacifica, in a new area of Panama City fronting the bay and close to upscale hotels, fine restaurants, convention centers, shopping and only 15 minutes from the Tocumen International Airport. The location of the hos-pital permits patients and their families to have access to many interesting attractions, theaters, casinos, historical sites, and the Panama Canal.

Hospital Punta Pacifica was born from the hopes and dreams of a group of Panamanian phy-sicians. These specialists, in association with Panamanian businessmen, wanted to provide Panama with a world-class digit-al hospital with the highest stand-ards of quality, care, security and technology.

The hospital is affiliated with Johns Hopkins Medicine Inter-national, whose experts in Bal-timore provide educational and consulting support to the clini-cal and administrative staff. Their support includes hospital infec-tion control policies, best practic-es and operating room efficiency, architectural design review (for patient safety, infection control, efficiency and clinical flow), eval-

uation and selection of imaging equipment, training and educa-tion of staff.

A Hopkins faculty member, as medical director, makes inter-mittent visits to the hospital to advise on quality and patient safety, and holds specialty-based clinical lectures, seminars and training for physicians and administrative staff.

The hospital’s digital facil-ity provides patients with advan-tages in a number of different areas. Videoconferencing equipment allows physicians to confer remotely with other phy-sicians abroad over sharp and clear images of patient tests, X-Rays, CT scans, and MRIs.

Mobile laptops are made avail-able to nurses and doctors, mak-ing possible bedside recordings of patients’ vital signs, symptoms, and medication requirements. The hospital has an Interna-tional Marketing Office that has links to the middlemen of health services in various parts of the world and coordinates transpor-tation arrangements, lodging and tours. La farmacia El Javillo, mejor conocida por los Panamenos como Boticario El

Javillo es una de las mas viejas y mas respetadas instituciones de Panama, donde se puede encontrar una gran gama de productos, desde medicina de recetas y “proprietary medicines” hasta una gran seleccion de productos natu-rales.

El Sr. Christiaan G. de Haseth, fun-dador de la botica “ El Javillo” vino a Pan-ama desde Curacao a principios de el siglo pasado. Su educacion en Holanda como farmaceutico fue invalorable para Panama en esa era y el fue uno de los co-fundadores de la facultad farmaceu-tica de la Universidad de Panama.

Su nieto, tambien con el nombre de Sr. Christaan de Haseth es ahora el gerente General de la compania, la cual ha crecido y ahora son varias companias dedicadas a distribuir, fabricar y vender sus productos. Las companias son Boti-cas el Javillo S.A y C.G. de Haseth y Cia S.A. . La casa matris de estas se encuentra al final de Via Cincuentenario y tienen approximadamente 400 emplea-dos en total.

as Botica El Javillo is one of the oldest and most respected institu-tions in Panama, where you can find anything from prescription drugs and proprietary medicines to a big selection of natural prod-ucts.

Mr. Christiaan G. de Haseth, the founder of Botica “El Javillo” came to Panama from Curacao in the early part of the last century. His education in Holland as a pharmacist was valuable to Pan-ama in that era and he was one of the co founders of the pharma-ceutical faculty of the University of Panama.

His grandson, also Mr. Christaan de Haseth is now the

General Manager of the company which has grown and now com-prises several companies dedi-cated to distributing and making medicine as well as selling it.

The first Botica El Javillo was opened in 1921 on the corner at Ave. B and Salsipuedes in Pana-ma City. Now, ten branches of the pharmacy are available at strate-gic positions around the city, with two more programmed to open soon. The pharmacy has a wide selection of medicine which is imported from Argentina, Colom-bia and Europe.

They also have their own line of natural products mainly comprised of dried herbs and tonic/extracts derived from plants. For those who cannot stomach

the taste of these in their more natural form, El Javillo also offers these products in capsules. In some of their branches, such as Plaza 5 de Mayo, they have a special table dedicated to unusual remedies. For those who believe in these remedies and for those who don’t, it can still be a bit of fun. You can find anything from “baths” for making money, chang-ing your luck, finding love or get-ting rid of the “bad eye” (mal de ojo, bad luck)!

Two of their pharmacies are in hospitals, one in Hospital Punta Pacifica and the other in Hospital Cuatro Altos in Colon. They also are the distributor for medicine used in these hospitals.

Today Grupo de Haseth rep-resents 40 laboratories and con-sortiums with such famous names as Johnson & Johnson, Kimberly Clark, Merk, Pfizer, Roche, Scher-ing, Plough and Wyeth. They have a sales force of 24 rep-resentatives who service clients countrywide. With 10 branches in the city and two more on the way the company certainly lives up to its motto “the oldest distributor with the most innovative ideas”.

El seguro médico y de salud en Panamá se divide básicamente en dos categorías:

HMO’s locales (Organizaciones de Administración de la Salud) ofreciendo pólizas con coberturas solamente para Panamá.

Pólizas Internacionales (pólizas

abiertas a nivel internacional también bajo el concepto de HMO, operando a través de una red establecida de docto-res, laboratorios y hospitales)

El costo de las coberturas loca-les de las pólizas bajo el estilo de las Organizaciones de Administración de la Salud, pueden variar ampliamente, pero generalmente oscilan entre los US$ 300,000 y los US$ 500,000. Usted está limitado a un selecto grupo de médicos y hospitales. Si se sale del selecto grupo, se le reembolsará sólo el 60% de lo que se habría pagado a los proveedores de preferencia.

La cobertura internacional, como el nombre implica, se extiende a cualquier país en el mundo en donde usted incurra en un gasto médico. El monto de la cobertura varía desde los US$ 700,000 al US$ 1.5 millón por la duración de la póliza. Normalmente usted es reembol-sado. Esto significa que usted paga la cuenta, trae los recibos a casa y presenta una solicitud de reembolso al corredor de seguros para su proceso. Si usted es joven (de los 20’s a los 30’s) y goza de buena salud, puede obtener una cobertura básica por un pequeño monto de hasta los US$ 60.00 mensuales y una cobertura excelente de hasta los US$ 130.00 mensuales. Mientras mayor sea su edad, más paga-rá. Es muy probable que la cobertura excluya cualquier condición pre-existen-te, aunque también están disponibles en Panamá planes especializados para coberturas específicas. Health insurance in Panama is basically divided into two major types:

Local HMOs (Health man-agement Organizations) offering coverage only for Panama.

International policies (open policies as well international ones with the HMO concept, working through an established network of doctors, labs and hospitals).

Coverage with local HMO-

style policies varies widely, but generally is between US$300,000 and US$500,000. You are limited to a select group of doctors and hospitals. Go outside the group, and you will be reimbursed for just 60% of what would have been paid to the preferred pro-vider.

International coverage, as the name implies, extends to any country in the world where you incur medical expense. The amount of coverage varies from $700,000 to $1.5 million for the life of the policy. Usually you are reimbursed. This means, you pay the bill, bring home the receipts, and present the claim to the bro-ker for processing. Some compa-nies have established relations with a network of hospitals and doctors through an administra-tion company in the U.S. and you need only to present your health insurance card in the U.S. and the service is provided and billed directly.

The variables in healthcare coverage are usually the age and health of the person to be covered, the type and quality of the coverage, flexibility to choose hospitals and doctors and the amounts of deductibles.

If you are young (20’s to 30’s) in good health, you can get basic coverage for as little as $60 per month and excellent coverage for up to $130 per month. The older you are, the more you’ll pay. Cov-erage will most likely exclude any pre-existing condition, although specialized plans for specific coverage are also available in Panama. These include cancer and other catastrophic conditions such as neurological illnesses, chronic renal insufficiency, organ transplants, and angioplasty, to name a few.

You can also cut your medi-cal costs in Panama by walking into a lab for tests without first having to see a physician and pay an office call fee, then take the results to your doctor to read. Also, pharmacists will usually supply a refill prescription with-out the patient having to go back to the doctor for it.

I had heard of a street in Pan-ama City’s popular Calidonia

shopping area where herbs and healing plants are displayed at curbside stalls. It wasn’t hard to find. I simply got into a taxi and told the driver what I was look-ing for.

He took me straight to Calle M (M street) where I spoke with two sisters, owners of one of the stalls. They have been working

their stall for 30 years and their mother and grandmother worked it before them. They obtain the plants from Chiriqui, Sora, Anton, Chepo and many other places.

They can tell you about every medicinal plant to be found in Panama. They gave me a quick lesson. If you go to them and describe your ailment they will recommend plants for it.

Había escuchado de una calle en la muy popular área de

compras de Calidonia, donde las hierbas y plantas curativas eran exhibidas en puestos de venta. No fue muy difícil de encontrar. Simplemente tomé un taxi y le dije al chofer lo que estaba bus-cando. Me llevó directo a la Calle M de Calidonia en donde con-versé con dos hermanas, dueñas de uno de los puestos de venta de ese lugar.

Ellas han trabajado en el puesto por 30 años, al igual que su madre y abuela también lo hici-eron antes que ellas. Obtienen las plantas de Chiriquí, Sorá, Antón, Chepo y muchos otros lugares de Panamá y nos pueden contar acerca de cada planta medicinal que se encuentra en el país. Me dieron una lección rápida y si usted va y describe su padecimiento o dolencia, le reco-mendarán ciertas plantas para su tratamiento. Aquí están algunos ejemplos de su mercancía:

ra. Their services include radiog-raphy, ultrasound and CAT scans; laboratory; dental and eye clinics and general medicine consulta-tions teamed with specialist con-sultants in their main hospital in Panama City.

Hospital Chiriqui and the Mae Lewis Hospital in David, province of Chriqui, provide comprehensive health care.

Dr. Richard Ford who runs a family-owned clinic is an associate of an internet-based organization called Pana-Health which directs foreign treatment-seekers to appro-priate afiliated doctors, hospitals and clinics. Pana-Health is also affiliated to Pesantez Tours, a local tour operator which looks after the transport, hotel and tourism needs of health-seekers.

The most common type of laser surgery is LASIK which stands for Laser-assisted In Situ Keratomileusis, a procedure using an excimer laser which perma-nently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear covering of the front of the eye.

LASIK, PRK, and CK are the three main surgical techniques used to correct eye defects such as myopia, commonly called nearsightedness, hyperopia also known as farsightedness, and astigmatism. Laser eye surgery also works for age-related vision problems and for more serious problems such as diabetic retinop-athy. Proliferative Diabetic Retin-opathy (PDR) is the more serious and later stage of this disease where laser eye surgery is a more important choice of treatment. The greatest advantage of laser eye surgery is that it is minimally inva-sive and does not involve the cut-ting of the covering of the eye, or cornea, with any type of surgical instrument. Instead, a thin layer of the cornea is cut with a laser beam and then gently pulled back, giving the laser eye surgeon the ability to then “sculpt” the corneal tissue to improve the vision. The thin flap is

then replaced and the procedure is over.

After the Lasik laser eye sur-gery, patients notice an almost instant improvement in their eye-sight. They can very quickly get back to their normal, everyday routines in almost all cases. Also, with Lasik there are no stitches to be concerned about and the patient will not even have to wear bandages. Healing and recovery is also faster and may only take around 3 to 4 days.

El tipo más común de cirugía láser es el LASIK que significa Láser Asistido “In Situ Keratomileusis”, un procedimiento que utiliza un excimer láser que cambia permanentemente la forma de la córnea, la cobertura clara de la parte del frente del ojo.

de la retinopatía diabética. La retinopatía diabética proliferativa (PDR) es la más seria y más tardía etapa de esta enfermedad, en donde la cirugía láser de ojo es la más importante opción de tratamiento.

La gran ventaja de la cirugía láser de ojo es que es mínimamente invasiva y no involucra un corte de la cubierta del ojo o córnea con ningún tipo de instrumento quirúrgico. En vez de eso, una delgada capa de la córnea es cortada con un rayo láser y luego suavemente movida hacia atrás, dándole al cirujano láser de ojo la habilidad de “esculpir” el tejido de la córnea y lograr la mejora de la visión. Luego se reemplaza la capa delgada y el procedimiento termina.

Después de la cirugía láser, los pacientes notan casi de inmediato un mejoramiento en la visión. Pueden regresar a la normalidad muy rápido y en casi todos los casos a sus rutinas diarias. También con el Lasik no hay puntadas de las cuales preocuparse y el paciente ni siquiera tendrá que utilizar vendas. La curación y la recuperación son también más rápidas y pueden tomar solamente

de tres a cuatro días.Es aconsejable siempre ver a un

oftalmólogo. Se puede realizar una discusión acerca de los pros y contras relacionados con las distintas técnicas. Es importante y necesario tener toda la información y detalles necesarios antes de optar por un tipo particular de cirugía láser de ojo.

Alternative cancer treatments have been around for over

a hundred years. Do they work? Cynics say no. For many patients the uncertainty and the prospect of a longer time-frame for an alter-native cure leads them to opt for conventional medicine.

Recently I came across an interesting story of a resident of the city of David in the province of Chiriqui who claims that a wine made of Borojo and Noni cured his cancer.

I decided to investigate this further. I had been trying Borojo for months and its energy and mental stimulating qualities I found clearly evident.

Borojo, is a little-known fruit. It is large, brown, and about the size of a watermelon. Some arti-cles claim one pound of Borojo has the same amount of amino acids as three pounds of fresh meat. Other people claim it can treat arterial hypertension, bal-ance blood sugars and there are even claims it is an aphrodisiac.

In Columbia the University of Santiago in Cali carried out research in which they discovered Borojo contained a substance called “Sesquiterpelantond” which they claimed inhibits cell growth in harmful tumours and showed promise for treating cancer.

I met with Roger Acosta, a 51-year-old religious studies teacher in David. Who told me he had contracted cancer twice. The first time in 1999 the cancer was in his colon and a portion of the colon was removed. Three years later in 2002 he was diagnosed with

liver cancer. At this time Roger, a deeply religious man, accepted what he believed was his inevita-ble fate and declined surgery and chemotherapy.

For a week after his diagnosis, Roger told me he prayed heavily. Three months later he met Volcan wine man, Jorge Quintero Rubio and tried Jorge’s Borojo and Noni concentrate. He took a small glass of the mixture three times a day and miraculously within two days the pain and the inflam-mation from his cancerous liver began to subside.

In addition to the oral medi-cine Jorge Rubio made a poultice from the Borojo and applied this externally to the affected area.

Roger Acosta tells me he had sonographs taken before his Borojo treatment and they showed multiple lesions of the liver. After the treatment the sono-graphs showed no lesions at all. A point of note here is that Roger Acosta’s recovery from cancer

was achieved without employing any of the traditional treatments i.e.; chemotherapy, radiation or surgery.

Up to now Roger Acosta remains healthy and regular check-ups reveal he is still can-cer-free.

Medically it is possible that Roger could have “Cured” himself by his strong religious beliefs and positive visualization. “Spontane-ous Remission,” is the term the medical profession gives to such cases where no logical or scien-tific reason exists.

Is Borojo a viable treatment or possible cure for cancer? Only a clinical study can answer that. The problem is that a study for FDA approval could cost hun-dreds of millions of dollars and then the company that funded the trial would have little or no copy-right protection because Borojo is a natural product.
