HEALTH & SAFETY

GONE MAD

Page 2: #HealthandSafetyGoneMad

PURPOSEThe health, safety and security of students is a critical issue

for everyone – for students and for the University, for whom

we have a duty of care to inform how to avoid risks and look

out for themselves. Still, accidents happen, things get dam-

aged or stolen and people do get hurt.

The University wants to effect a positive behaviour

change in relation to student safety on campus, safety in

halls and personal security.

In the past, there has been a plethora of posters, leaflets

and PowerPoint presentations, covering everything from

fire safety to bike security, keeping safe walking home

in the dark to looking where you’re going walking across

campus. It’s really easy to dismiss this advice as just

‘common sense’ – but it’s more than that.

We have thousands of students arriving at University,

living away from home for the first time, often feeling they

are mature, invincible and having no need for a ‘big broth-

er lecture’ or a crash course in ‘elf ‘n’ safety’.

So, we want to make a film that reaches students in a way

they will like and remember that pulls this advice together

succinctly and creatively.

The competition to win a MacBook Air is aimed at current

students to help us come up with an approach, style or

message via a tweet. This will be followed up by a short

explanation of their idea for the film, if shortlisted by a

University panel. So get tweeting!

OBJECTIVES OF FILM• To make (new) students aware of the potential health &

safety risks now they have moved away from home to

university

• To highlight the things they need to know that will help

them keep safe and secure and behave in a considerate

way around campus

• To interest and inform students in a memorable and

interesting style

DEADLINES• Competition closing date – 29 May 2015

• Judging w/c 1 June 2015

• Winner announced & film produced July/August

• Film launch 1 September

• Intake weekend 18, 19. 20 September – principal showings

CREATIVE APPROACH The winning student’s idea will form the starting point.

The film needs to creatively address the best way to

package and communicate the information on safety in

halls, safety on campus, and personal safety and security.
