(PVC), antimicrobials1 and all

flame-retardants2.

Patients and workers are exposed to a wide array of chemicals that have a lasting negative effect on individual health, public health, and the environment. Many of these harmful chemicals are used in hospitals and healthcare facilities more than any other sector and are present in some health care products, furniture and fabrics. Scientific research shows that exposure to these hazardous chemicals increases the risk of various diseases in the general population1.

The HH Safer Chemicals Challenge encourages hospitals to purchase safer products that reduce exposure to chemicals linked to a range of health impacts such as cancer, birth defects, asthma and other health problems. Products that meet Healthier Hospital’s compliance criteria are manufactured without the use of formaldehyde, per and poly-flourinated compounds (PFCs), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), antimicrobials2, and all flame-retardants3.

they are registered with the U.S. EPA under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA), and have published

data that show efficacy in a hospital/clinical setting measured by a reduction in healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) as part of

comprehensive infection control measures. Antimicrobials added to materials or products for the sole purpose of preserving the

product are exempt.

• Formaldehyde, a Volatile Organic Compound (VOC), is a carbon compound emitted as a gas from resins used in composite wood products (e.g., plywood, particle board, medium density fiberboard) that has short- and long-term adverse health effects.

• Per- and poly-fluorinated compounds (PFCs) are a category of compounds that includes long and short chain per- and poly-fluorinated alkyl compounds and fluorinated polymers. PFCs are widely used to make everyday products, including furnishings and fabrics, more resistant to stains, grease, and water.

• Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), or vinyl, is a synthetic thermoplastic material made by polymerizing vinyl chloride. The properties of the material depend on the additives, including plasticizers. PVC has a wide array of uses, most significantly as an upholstery fabric used on hospital furniture.

• Antimicrobials are substances, or mixtures of substances, designed to destroy or suppress the growth of harmful microorganisms. With rare exceptions, very few data support the use of antimicrobials in furniture as a means of helping reduce healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). Some antimicrobials pose risks to human health and the environment and may contribute to antimicrobial resistance.

• Flame retardants are chemicals/compounds added to materials such as plastics, textiles, surface finishes, and coatings that inhibit, suppress, or delay the production of flames to prevent the spread of fire.

VOCs include a variety of chemicals, including formaldehyde, some of which may have short- and long-term adverse health effects. VOCs are emitted by a wide array of products numbering in the thousands1.

HH compliant furniture must be tested in accordance with ANSI/BIFMA Standard Method M7.1–2011(R2016) and ANSI/BIFMA e3-2014 Furniture Sustainability Standard, Sections 7.6.1 and 7.6.2, using either the concentration modeling approach or the emissions factor approach.

The Clean Air certification program uses ISO 17025 accredited laboratories to test products for VOC emission compliance and is recognized by USGBC for LEED v4 EQ Credit Low-Emitting Materials2. All Via Seating products are certified Clean Air GOLD, meaning they surpass the minimum HH criteria for VOC and formaldehyde emissions.
