Healthy Families, Healthy Children Information Pathway
IntroductionThe Healthy Families, Healthy Children Information Pathway has been designed to assist NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde staff who work with pregnant women, families and children. It identifies publications which are available to support effective communication with parents and carers to improve maternal and child health outcomes. It covers the stages of pregnancy, infancy, toddler and the pre-school period up to the 30month check. The publications can be used to help raise the subject of important health issues, support health related behaviour change and should be provided to parents and carers for their information and support as part of these discussions.
Meeting the Resource NeedsThe publications listed are reliable sources of information, produced by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Health Scotland and other reputable agencies. Health Professionals should be familiar with many of the publications available and should note that other materials are also available to order as part of the discussion with parents and carers. For example Steps to deal with stress in booklet or DVD format, or resources to support low literacy skills. For further information please go to: www.phrd.scot.nhs.uk where you can browse the full range of materials.
Key Resources Key resources produced by NHS Health Scotland are included in the Healthy Families, Healthy Children Information Pathway, these are:
Ready Steady Baby! This publication aims to provide parents with important information that they will need before, during and after pregnancy. All health professionals who have contact with women and their partners throughout this time should go through Ready Steady Baby! with their clients and make a point of referring to the publication.
Ready Steady Toddler! This publication is a guide for parents as they experience the changes their child goes through when they leave the baby stage and become a demanding toddler. It gives practical problem-solving information and has sections on understanding toddler behaviour and ways for parents to tackle new challenges.Health Scotland has worked with CHANGE (a national organisation which works with disabled people) to provide three Easy Read resources,
which are specifically designed to support parents with learning disabilities. These should be given out at the appropriate stages as an alternative to (or as well as) Ready Steady Baby! and Ready Steady Toddler! •MyPregnancy,MyChoice •YouandYourBaby •YouandYourLittleChild
play@homeBaby, toddler and pre-school books are provided to families in Scotland with a child 0-5 years old. Activities in the books promote all-round development and family communications. Health Professionals should refer to the activities when discussing children’s physical, social and emotional growth, and the acquisition of speech and language skills. The books can also be used by professionals as a resource to discuss baby massage.
Making our Information AccessibleOne of the main aims of the NHSGGC Accessible Information Policy is to ensure all information is available in accessible formats to meet the needs of patients and carers. Patient requests for any of the publications listed not currently available in accessible formats should be made in writing to: Information Management TeamPublic Health Directorate, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde, West House, Gartnavel Royal Campus, Glasgow, G12 0XH.
