Pam Staver-Ramey talks about her bout with back pain, opioid addiction, and the benefits of training your core and back in her new class at TownPark.

When you first meet Kaiser Permanente instructor and program developer Pam Staver-Ramey, you immediately feel her kind spirit fill the room. From the first warm-up move to the final stretch, Pam leads her healthy living classes with joy and love of movement. Pam loves to create a workout environment of team spirit as she cheers on each participant toward their personal best. She teaches several Healthy Living classes at Kaiser Permanente TownPark Comprehensive Medical Center, including the National Diabetes Prevention Program (pg 43), KP Next Level (pg 11), and the newest class on the schedule: Strong Back & Core (pg 14).

But when it comes to back pain, Pam isn’t just an instructor; she’s someone who has lived with a back condition for over 20 years. Pam suffered through tremendous back pain caused by spondylolisthesis, a painful condition of the lower back, which causes vertebrae to slip forward onto the bone directly beneath.

The pain led to several kinds of treatments, including chiropractic adjustments, acupuncture, fascia release, and spinal injections. Pam began taking pain medication for her back, and the amount of medication she was ingesting began to increase.

NEW CLASS ALERT: STRONG BACK & CORE

Eventually, it got out of control. “I found myself taking a pain pill in the morning to jump start my day whether I needed it or not,” Pam says. “It was a little scary. I knew that this was a destructive pattern that I had to break free from. But what if I couldn’t handle my back pain without the medication?”

With the support of her husband and a trusted friend, Pam made an active choice to stop allowing pain medication to control her and set up an action plan. “It wasn’t easy, but through prayer, meditation, and tremendous support, I was able to break free from the addiction,” she recalls.

Pam upped her back and core strengthening/stretching regimen and, using her Pilates background, became razor focused on how to address back pain effectively without the use of opioids. This story is the origin of the Strong Back & Core class, and Pam is delighted to share it at TownPark as the newest addition to the Healthy Living class schedule.

Pam tells her story in hopes that she can help others manage back pain and help class participants thrive in their health. This class is open to both members and non-members. Find out more on page 14.

So what is Strong Back & Core?“Strong Back & Core is a 45-minute class designed for anyone who may be experiencing back pain and for anyone who wants to get stronger in their back and core muscles, something we all can benefit from,” Pam says. “This class is for every fitness level; just bring a towel, a yoga mat, and some water.”

How does Strong Back & Core help alleviate back pain?“Strong abdominal muscles, along with good posture, take pressure off the back and help align your spine,” Pam says. “When you train these muscles on a regular basis, you reap the benefits of a strong back and core, help relieve back pain, and can make other physical activities stronger, safer, and more effective.”

How does this class fit into my exercise schedule?Pam says that mastering back and core exercises are foundational for all movement. “For those who want to lose or maintain weight, this class will give you the confidence to try new forms of more vigorous exercise to burn even more calories,” she explains.

This class isn’t just for those suffering from back pain. People who want to train for athletic events benefit from this kind of exercise too, and it adds discipline, such as centering, concentrating and breathing. If you are struggling with opioid

addiction, talk to your doctor about resources available to you.

The power of DEEP BREATHINGStop, find some quiet head space, and breathe deeply. This basic act delivers a powerful health punch, including:

• Subduing the body’s stress response. Focusing on breathing is at the core of many relaxation techniques.

• Positively affecting the body. Your heart, brain, digestion, and yes, even your immune system will benefit.

• Promoting better sleep. Soothing your mind is one of the biggest challenges to getting quality sleep. Deep breathing can help you tune out the day’s noise.

Deep breathing can help you relax and make you more alert, so be sure your indoor air quality is up to snuff. Avoid sources, such as candles, incense, and fireplaces, which can create lung-irritating fine particles.

Try adding some easy-to-grow houseplants, such as the peace lily and rubber plant, that can help clean indoor air.

Georgia • January — July 202018

B efore Bernard Cuvilly’s father passed in 2018, he had been on dialysis for nine long years.

Struggling with advanced kidney disease, he told Bernard – do what it takes and “don’t go on the dialysis chair” – a grim reminder that he had spent years sitting, just to keep his kidneys functional.

Bernard, himself, in his 50s – was not in great shape at the time. When Bernard started his journey toward better health, he smoked, he was overweight, and his A1C – used as a benchmark of diabetes – was 10.2, more than five points above a healthy range. “I didn’t realize it was a problem yet – (A1C) was just a number to me.” Bernard was also sedentary and ate what he wanted. “Soda and pasta,” he said. “That’s what I loved.” But his primary care physician, Madeline Fortin, MD, was concerned. A family physician at the Kaiser Permanente TownPark Comprehensive Medical Center, she wanted Bernard to make some changes, and she started with recommending he try out some Healthy Living classes. Bernard did.

As a matter of fact, Bernard, 54, ended up taking four classes: Diabetes: The Basics, What Can I Eat?, Managing Health Risks, and Beyond the Basics. And in less than a year, he has turned his health journey around. Armed with the knowledge from each class, Bernard started changing his lifestyle, quitting smoking, walking,

and dramatically altering his diet. He gave up the soda and pasta “cold turkey.” Bernard stopped eating white bread, and after craving rice, started swapping it out for quinoa. Most of the time, he is joined by his wife — a chef by trade — but “she basically still eats what she wants,” Bernard said with a laugh. “She eats ice cream still,” he said, “but no ice cream for me.”

Bernard also started walking – and consistently walked for an hour to an hour and a half every day. His wife, who at first went with him, finally said he walked too long for her, but he kept at it for months.

But his results drove him forward – he’s gone from being 227 pounds to 180 pounds. His A1C has dropped from 10.2 to 6.1 – well within a healthy range. More importantly, seeing such progress, Bernard now strives for healthy opportunities as he treasures his father’s advice – and moves away from a legacy of dialysis and kidney disease. “I run up the stairs,” he said. “Just because now I can do it.”

Tips for avoiding diabetes• Lose weight and keep it off. You may be able to

prevent or delay diabetes by losing 5 to 7 percent of your starting weight. For instance, if you weigh 200 pounds, your goal would be to lose about 10 to 14 pounds.

• Move more. Get at least 30 minutes of physical activity 5 days a week. If you have not been active, talk with your health care professional about which activities are best. Start slowly to build up to your goal.

• Eat healthy foods most of the time. Eat smaller portions to reduce the amount of calories you eat each day and help you lose weight. Choosing foods with less fat is another way to reduce calories. Drink water instead of sweetened beverages.

You Must Pre-Register — Non-members welcome*

There are no easy or instant cures for chronic insomnia. Overcoming insomnia involves making changes in your daily behavior. Many people abandon a behavioral technique after two or three nights if it doesn’t produce an immediate change in their sleep.

This course will require time, patience, and persistence. Although the changes resulting from behavioral inter-ventions will take longer than just taking a pill, they will also last longer. These changes are more enduring, more effective, and safer than sleep medications.

Diabetes education classes will be offered in a four part series. Class 1 is required to be taken before the others in the series. These classes will be helpful in teaching you the skills to understand and manage your diabetes. We recommend these classes if you: have diabetes, are newly diagnosed with diabetes, need a refresher, have elevated A1c or blood sugar levels, have had a recent change in diabetes treatment, or have not attended diabetes education classes within the past two years.

If you have prediabetes or believe you may be at risk for developing diabetes and are overweight, there is good news for you. There are changes you can start making now to help prevent diabetes.

The National DPP, based on research from the National Institutes of Health, shares the information and skills you need. It has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58 percent and even more in people who are 60 and older!

The National DPP is a proven, intensive, lifestyle program that teaches participants how to build their plan to prevent diabetes. It is designed to help break down behaviors into small, manageable steps. Participants will be in a small group with other people who are also changing their routines to prevent diabetes.

• A 12-month, group-based program with 16 one-hour weekly sessions for the first four months, followed by four months of bi-weekly sessions, and once-per- month sessions for the last four months; designed to be interactive and fun!

• Topics include healthy eating, weight loss, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, problem solving, motivation, and long-term maintenance of healthy lifestyle changes.

• Weekly weigh-ins and tracking food intake and activity levels are part of this program.

• It is led by a trained lifestyle coach who facilitates this small group of people with similar goals. The smaller class size means there will be opportunities to hear, learn, and share with others what works best.

If you are truly ready to make a lasting difference in your health, reduce your risk of developing diabetes, and can commit your time and energy, register now by calling the health line at 404-365-0966. Space is limited.**
