HEAR THE ROARS AT Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice™Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice is the first child-centered exhibit in the country dedicated to expanding the understanding of dinosaur habitat and range roars at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum through Sept. 13, 2015.

The exciting traveling exhibit transports families back to the Cretaceous Period (145 – 65 million years ago), the time when dinosaurs last lived on earth, allowing children and adults to explore dinosaur habitats to better understand how these mysterious animals lived.

Children will go face-to-face with the prehistoric world and meet dinosaurs of all shapes and sizes. The exhibit, created for children ages 3 or older, will feature two distinct environments and a variety of activities. A Field Research Station allows children to step into the role of paleontologist by uncovering fossils with brushes and creating drawings of the dinosaur environment using fossil rubbings and tracings.

The steamy “Land of Fire” connects visitors with the prehistoric home of the Triceratops and T-Rex. Children can circle the land in insect costumes and buzz through a volcano with oozing lava or work through a swampy bog and identify an ecosystem of animals or plants. No coats are needed for a trip across the “Land of Ice” where visitors meet two dinosaurs, a Troodon and Edmontosaurus, who made their homes in the cold climate of Alaska. Activities include: climbing rocky steps, breezing down an icy slide and hoping across stepping stones in an icy river.

Dinosaurs: Land of Fire and Ice utilizes new research about climates in which dinosaurs were able to survive and thrive. The discovery of numerous species of dinosaurs in the Arctic is causing scientists to reconsider old theories about dinosaurs only living in tropical climates. It is now known that many dinosaurs, including Edmontosaurus and Troodon, lived in cold weather climates for at least part of the year.

The beautiful Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas played gracious host by presenting our inaugural DISCOVERY Royal Tea benefiting the Museum on Sunday, May 3, 2015.

We are both excited and thrilled to say that all our guests, girls and boys, moms and dads and grandparents all had a wonderful, fantastic and special time. The Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas and their amazing team truly presented a gorgeous occasion with delicious savory and sweet finger foods and the finest teas from around the world.

It’s fun to report that we were also graced with a Royal Court visit from the King and Queen themselves, with Princess, Royal Knight, Court Jester and grand Royal Throne in attendance; lots of photos were taken and fun memories made!

Everyone, girls and boys, of all ages, ran from one activity table to the next, stimulating their minds and creativity. At each art table we had a tremendous experience creating and decorating royal sashes, crowns, goblets, swords and shields; and making finger puppets and royal teapot photo frames.

We take this opportunity to thank you, our wonderful and generous friends that came, enjoyed and supported our inaugural DISCOVERY Royal Tea morning together! e Don’t Be a Sleepy Head! e Have you ever wondered what is happening in your brain while you are sleeping? Find out the answer to this question and experience simulated effects of sleep deprivation in this engaging experience.

e Go, Slow, Whoa! e Do you want to know which foods to eat in order to be healthy? Learn the differences between them in this fun and interactive game of food.

e Ancient Images e Petroglyph, pictograph, geoglyph or hieroglyph – which is it? Join us as we compare and contrast these ancient forms of communication while exploring how scientist determine their meaning and date them. Also, work together to build your very own geoglyph.

SUMMER PROGRAMS e July 11 – 17 e Preparing for the Road Trip!TT – Take a colorful road trip and roll vehicles through paint to create unique and colorful designs on paper. Happy travels!YAA – Where will you take your summer vacation? Come learn about different summer destinations and make a map of your future travels!PP – Engineer, design, and build your own rubber band vehicle then complete the road trip challenge course.

e July 18 – 24 e ‘Round the Campfire!TT – Learn all about campfire safety and create a warm and cozy campfire scene using a variety of art materials.YAA – Use charcoal and other materials to create fire-themed art! PP – Join us as we explore the science behind camp fire safety.

e July 25 – 31 e Leave No Trace!TT – Based on the Leave No Trace Principal for Kids “Leave What You Find,” learn all about nature preservation and create beautiful images from nature using watercolors and stencils. YAA – While camping, it’s important to Leave No Trace. Use items from nature to create artwork that encourages conservation!PP – Learn the basics of the seven principles of Leave No Trace through fun hands on activities.

AUGUST – Celebrate Art Appreciation Month!This year, in recognition of Art Appreciation Month, we will be exploring the artistry and science behind comic books and Superheroes! Each week, visitors will encounter new fun-filled activities which will entertain and intrigue kids and adults alike. Discover the science behind gamma radiation, explore the process of printing and drawing comic book characters, create your own Superhero story and much more during our action-packed programs all month long. Stay tuned for more information on our Art Appreciation Superheroes Kick-off Day Saturday, Aug. 1.

e August 1 – 7 e Comics and Superheroes!TT – Design your very own superhero mask to wear on an exciting adventure!YAA – It’s Art Appreciation Month! Come discover the art of comic books and learn how lines can create life-like movements that jump off the page!PP – The popular fictional comic book character Hulk is able to balloon to his enormous size due to the effects of gamma radiation exposure. Join us as we explore different types of radiation, their effects, and the various methods used to detect radiation.

e August 8 – 14 e Comics and Superheroes and Health and WellnessTT – Learn all about superfoods and use fruit and vegetable patterns to design your own food superhero!YAA – Art Appreciation Month continues as we explore superheroes that encourage a healthy mind and body!IYC – In comic books superheroes are super fit. Join us as we practice some superhero moves to stay fit.

e August 15 – 21 e What Superhero Would You Be?TT – Create a powerful pair of superhero cuffs to wear on your super adventures!YAA – What if you could be a superhero? Design your own heroes and powers as we create our own superhero comics!PP – Have you ever wondered how your favorite comic books come to life through animation? Learn about some of the techniques used to make your favorite characters come to life and create your own animation.

e August 22 – 28 e More Comics & Superheroes!TT – Design your own superhero scene using play dough and shape cutters.YAA – Learn about Pop Art of the 1950s and the techniques used by artist Roy Lichtenstein to create comic-inspired artwork!PP – Spiderman, Batman, Wolverine, what do all of these superheroes have in common? Animal adaptations! Discover what adaptations these superheroes use to defeat evil and test some of them out yourself!

SEPTEMBER – Celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month!

Hispanic Heritage Month roots go back to 1968 and begins each year on September 15, the anniversary of independence of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico, Chile and Belize also celebrate their independence days during this period and Columbus Day (Día de la Raza) is October 12. The term Hispanic or Latino, refers to Puerto Rican, South or Central American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. People of Spanish, Hispanic and/or Latino origin could identify themselves as Mexican, Mexican American, Chicano, Puerto Rican, Cuban, or "another Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish origin."

During National Hispanic Heritage Month (officially celebrated September 15 to October 15) we recognize the contributions made and the important presence of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the United States and celebrate the group's heritage and culture. Hispanics have had a profound and positive influence on our country through their strong commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service. They have enhanced and shaped our national character with centuries-old traditions that reflect the multiethnic and multicultural customs of their community.

Please join us at DISCOVERY Children’s Museum during the month of September as we celebrate this special annual tribute by learning and celebrating the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society. You will find that we have chosen to celebrate in a variety of ways – by honoring Authors and Illustrators, Artists and Scientists and Inventors of Hispanic descent.

For Little Learners… Exploring this Celebration through the lens of Hispanic Authors and Illustrators. Toddler Town is paying tribute to Hispanic authors and illustrators who have positively influenced children’s literature.

e August 29 – September 4 eEnjoy the story “The Woman Who Outshone the Sun,” by author Alejandro Cruz Martinez and illustrator Fernando Olivera, and design a vibrantly colored sun!

e September 5 – 11 eExplore the beautiful illustrations in the picture book “Frida,” illustrated by Spanish artist Ana Juan. Use your imagination to bring your dreams to life with watercolors.

e September 12 – 18 eRecreate a page from the story “Moon Rope,” a beautiful adaptation of a Peruvian folktale.

e September 19 – 25 eRead the story “The Lizard and the Sun,” by author Alma Flor Ada and illustrator Felipe Davalos, and create your own lively lizard!

e September 26 – October 2 eEnjoy the story “Colores de la Vida,” which features the handiwork of Oaxacan sculptors who crafted the vibrantly painted creatures featured in the book. Create your own colorful version of a character in the story!

Exploring National Hispanic Heritage Month by honoring Artists of Hispanic descent.Join us in Young at Art as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Visitors will explore and encounter the works of Joan Miro, Alicia Framis, Juan Gris, Cristina Iglesias and Oscar Dominguez. By discovering these artists’ contribution to the artistic world, visitors will expand their understanding of Surrealism, self-portraits, Cubism, and Muralism.

e September 5 – 11 eCelebrate Ileana SánchezJoin us in celebration of Puerto Rico by exploring the invention of Techno Braille and Techno Print that was invented by Ileana Sánchez. Investigate parts of the brain that are associated with speech and touch and make your own Techno Braille and Techno Print masterpieces.

e September 12 – 18 e Celebrate Victor Ochoa Join us as we celebrate Victor Ochoa, a Mexican-American inventor. Learn about his invention of the electric brake and many others!

e September 19 – 25 eCelebrate the science of Columbian Coffee Join us as we investigate Columbian coffee. What does it take to grow coffee? What are some difficulties that scientist are facing? Answer all these questions and more.

e September 26 – October 2 e Peruvian Challenge - Ancient StructuresExplore pictures, designs and stories of different Peruvian ancient structures. Create a Peruvian inspired pyramid.

Climb the Summit!The Summit is a 70-foot tower that encompasses 2,200 square feet vertically, ascending all three floors of the museum. Featuring 40 interactive science exhibits as well as sliding and climbing structures, the Summit is an experience that is both intellectually and physically engaging for visitors. On each of the 12 levels, visitors interact and experiment with exhibits that highlight the

connections between scientific concepts and real-life applications. Each level contains hands-on components that facilitate exploration of different science strands: simple machines, sound, air pressure, earth, flight, electricity and magnets, energy, visual perception, space science and light. From lifting the DCM car with a giant lever to taking in an amazing view at the top of the Summit, visitors will experience science in a very unique way!

DISCOVERY Children’s Museum’s 2nd Annual Community Art Showcase

Join us in celebrating Art Appreciation Month during August with our 2nd Annual Community Art Showcase! Artistic expression is a vital component of a community, let your imagination run wild and create something

beautiful to share with us. DISCOVERY Children’s Museum staff and visitors are invited to contribute their work of art to be displayed on the third floor outside of Young at Art for everyone to see!

Does your little one have amazing art skills? Now is your chance to show it off! Mom, dad, grandma, and grandpa—we want to see your work, too! Or better yet, explore the process of creation together by making a family art project. Submissions can come from a variety of mediums: photography, painting, drawing, sculpting, or even a combination of all of the above! Artwork may not exceed 8 ½ x 11 inches; both portrait and landscape orientations are acceptable.

Visitor Services will collect all entries on your next visit to the museum. Submissions will be accepted through July 31, at which point our Arts and Humanities team will assemble the most creative and interesting work to be displayed in the showcase all month long.

Remember: there is no right or wrong answers in art!

Bank of America Supports DISCOVERY Children’s Museum

Don Giraldo, Bank of America’s Las Vegas Market Manager, awards the first charitable check to DISCOVERY Children’s Museum CEO/President Tifferney White. Bank of America recently donated $15,000 to the Museum as part of their community support of Southern Nevada nonprofits. For 16 hours on May 20, 2015, Bank of America donated grants totaling $200,000 to a variety of nonprofits who focus on employment opportunities and preparing the next generation of workers.
