The Heart Center was the second physician group in the US to deploy a 64-slice 3-D heart CT scan-ner, and the fi rst in Alabama. We also have one of the nation’s largest non-university based research departments, Oracle Research (see www.OracleRes.com). The Heart Center was one of the fi rst cardiol-ogy practices in the country to deploy a cardiac spe-cifi c Positron Emission Tomographic (PET) Scanner.

There are seven major components to the assessment:

1. Cardiovascular History - 1. Cardiovascular History - 1. Cardiovascular History A medical history provides our cardiologists with a thorough understanding of your past and current health issues and/or concerns.

2. Comprehensive Laboratory Profi le - These laboratory tests detect anemia, low-grade infection, diabetes, thyroid disease, gout, liver and kidney disease. Also included are a lipid panel and C - reactive protein to assess risk of heart attack or stroke, and prostate cancer screening.

3. Vascular Screening - These tests evaluate the condition of blood supply and circula-3. Vascular Screening - These tests evaluate the condition of blood supply and circula-3. Vascular Screeningtion to the arms, legs, and brain. If blood supply is poor due to plaque buildup, narrow-ing of the arteries, or other issues, then this can lead to strokes or heart attacks. Included in this exam are an Abdominal Ultrasound (to screen for aneurysm), Ankle Brachial Index (ABI) test, Carotid Ultrasound, and blood pressure evaluation.

4. HeartScore (Cardiac Calcium Scoring) - Over time, starting in your teens, cal-cium (plaque) can quietly build up in the coronary arteries. Calcifi cation can signal the presence of blockages that can cause a heart attack or other problems. The amount of calcifi cation translates into a score from “one to fi ve” (low to very high risk).

5. HeartScan (a 64-Slice 3-D color cardiac CT Scan) - Computed tomography (CT) imaging has become a standard test for many cardiovascular conditions. Recently, three-dimensional color imaging of the heart and the coronary arteries has emerged as a highly accurate and non-invasive way to diagnose coronary artery disease. 200 heart images per second are generated by our 3-D CT scanner. The Heart Center was the fi rst provider of 3-D imaging in Alabama. The study also includes an electrocardiogram (EKG) and heart pump effi ciency analysis.

6. Comprehensive Preventive Physical Examination - This Exam includes pulmo-

nary, abdominal, musculoskeletal, neurological, head and neck, skin survey for cancer

screening, body composition, and other exams if indicated. Also includes review of

diet and exercise counseling. Additional laboratory tests may be performed

on an as needed basis.

Why Should You Worry About Your Executive’s Health?Keeping executives healthy and on the job is absolutely criti-

cal for business success. A sudden heart attack, stroke, or

other major cardiovascular event for a top executive can cost

your company millions in lost revenue, productivity, medi-

cal costs, and disability pay.

What is the Most Likely Serious Health Problem that an Executive Will Have?Heart Disease is the number one killer and disabler in our

area. Last year the fi rst symptom of coronary artery disease

(CAD) for 150,000 Americans was Sudden Death. There are

1.1 million heart attack victims per year and 700,000 stroke

victims annually. Almost half of all adults, 80 million Amer-

icans, have some form of heart disease. 80% of Heart Disease

is Unrecognized and develops without causing Symptoms.

How Do You Know if You Have Cardiovascular Disease and May Be a “Ticking Time Bomb”?Most people do not know that they have heart disease

since they have no symptoms. Many executives have sub-

clinical and unrecognized coronary disease which, if left

undiagnosed or untreated, can result in a catastrophe for

the executive, their family, the company, and the share-

holders of the business.

What makes Our Program Different and Better than a Typical “Company Physical”?

• Typical physical exams are limited and are not designed to diagnose cardiovascular disease.

• We use the newest technology in cardiovascular diagnosis and internal medicine including 3-D heart scanners, nuclear imaging, stress tests, ultrasound and PET scans.

• Highly Trained, Board Certifi ed, Cardiologists manage the assessment.

• Individualized evaluations are made according to the personal health needs of the executive.

Executive Cardiovascular Assessment Program

“Individuals with recognized coronary artery disease make up just a small proportion of the total number of people with disease.”

What Is Included In A Cardiovascular Assessment?

Healthy HeartThe Heart Center uses the most advanced 3-D color imaging technology in the world to provide a highly detailed image of the heart, valves, and arteries. Over 200 images are taken per second which results in superb resolution and clarity. These images are then analyzed by our board certifi ed cardiologists. With this data, in conjunction with other testing, our doctors will provide you with a clear understanding of your heart’s health, as well as provide advice and counsel to you on how to improve your overall health.

Dr. Michael Ridner, MD, FACC, Clinical Associate Professor at UAB School of Medicine in Huntsville, and Medical Director of CT Angiography and Cardiac Catheterization, discusses the fi ndings from a 3-D color image of the heart.

What Is Included In A Cardiovascular Assessment?

Herb Haught, MD, F.A.C.C. stands in front of a state-of-the-art imaging device, a Siemens E-cam. The E-cam is used in image blood fl ow to the myocardium of the heart and to measure the output or strength of the left ventricle.

7. Cardiopulmonary Exercise Test (CPET) – a combination pulmonary, metabolic, and cardiac evaluation which

measures the executive’s overall functional capacity to work.
