Welcome to Heartbeat …

The Church’s logo was designed for the 160th anniversary of the Church in 2014. It illustrates the church’s commitment to be at the heart of the whole community of Upton by Chester. The name for the magazine, Heartbeat, reflects that commitment.

Some months ago the Reverend
Phil Burrows, in his role as Padre
at The Dale Camp, led one of our
Wednesday communion services.
In his sermon he spoke of the
hope in Jesus...a hope anchored
in the past, assured in the future
and available in the present.
As he prepares to take over a
parish in another part of the
country, we hold him and the 2nd
Mercian in our prayers as they
take up their duties in Cyprus.
Hope for our present and future
was evident at the Easter family
service where the church was fit
to burst!
Many of our congregation shared
that it was the busiest Eastertide
they had seen for many years.
As we enter May, prepare to
mark Ascension with our annual
service and anticipate Pentecost,
let us be thankful for all that our
church, parish and community of
Upton-by-Chester have to offer.
Details of our Ascension service
follow on the next page.
Ascension Day Service
Thursday 10th May 7.00pm Holy Communion
Followed by Tea and Cakes in the Kempe Room.
Everyone is very welcome.
Thank you to all who donated money for the Easter flowers and to all
the folk who gave their time and skills to create the displays. Barbara C.
There has been some discussion
going on for a while about the
effects gambling has on various
people and how much money can
be lost so easily and quickly in slot
machines.
The adverse effects of gambling on
individuals and families can be
devastating.
Are you a gambler?
Do you buy a lottery ticket?
Maybe you follow the horses or
have a bet on the football?
Apart from the odd raffle ticket
and sometimes a pound bet on
first scorer for Liverpool (it’s not a
moral choice) I just don’t have
enough faith in some horse in the
3.30 at Chester or Bangor to risk
my hard earned cash on it and, of
course, you very rarely see a poor
bookie!!
Then there are those who enjoy
‘extreme sports:’ snowboarding
down mountains, bungee jumping
or motor racing. But gambling and
risk-taking are a natural part of life.
As we know, nothing is certain, but
we do try to minimise risks and
ensure that what we do doesn’t
cause us any danger or hardship –
looking both ways when we cross
the road, checking that the gas is
turned off and that the doors are
locked before we go to bed.
Yet risk-taking and gambling are at
the heart of what it means to be a
Christian. Firstly we have Jesus
whose faith in God the Father led
him to gamble his very life in the
belief that God would rather do
something new and incredible
through his time of trial and
darkness; his utmost trust in God,
who has power over death itself.
That trust led him to surrender
himself to death by crucifixion,
burial and then incredibly, three
days later be raised from the dead
as Lord and Saviour.
And then there is our response to
Jesus. Are we willing to take the
gamble and accept he is indeed
who he says he is – no less the God
with us – the one who took on our
humanity to live amongst us and
stand alongside us in all that life
brings for good or ill?
Letter from Paul
The one who died on a cross and in
dying there, took the guilt and paid
the price, for your sins and mine –
indeed for the sins of the whole
world.
This is the truth as God has
revealed to us – that our faith in
Jesus Christ is the means by which
we are put right with God, where
our sins are forgiven, our peace is
assured, and the eternal life
begins. You can bet your life on it!
This poem by G.A. Studdert
Kennedy reminds us of this.
He Was a Gambler Too
And sitting down they watched
him there, - the soldiers did.
There as they played with dice,
He made his sacrifice,
And died upon the cross to rid
God’s world of sin.
He was a gambler, too, my Christ!
He took his life and threw it for a
world redeemed.
And ere the western sun went
down,
Crimsoning the day with a golden
crown,
HE KNEW THAT HE HAD WON.
God bless. Paul.
Although I have only been at Dale
Barracks for 15 months, I want to
say a particular ‘Thank You’ to Rev
Paul Newman and the people at
Holy Ascension, for making me
most welcome, for supporting my
ministry to soldiers at The Dale
and for the thoughtfulness and
prayers during our tours overseas
last year. I have especially enjoyed
being part of the mid-week Holy
Communion service (did someone
mention cake?)!
I shall miss being part of such a
warm and welcoming Church
family. May God bless you as you
seek to honour him. Rev Phil.

Many of the hymns that we sing
have come out of circumstances
and times that seem to be contrary
to Faith.
Some have come from the writer’s
journey through the valley of the
shadow of death.
They have written hymns that have
brought joy and consolation to us
all.
When Horatio Spafford penned
‘When Peace like a river’ (No. 757
in Complete Mission Praise), his
four daughters had drowned when
the S.S. Ville du Harve sank whilst
crossing the Atlantic.
Mrs Cecil Frances Alexander
sounds like a woman we would all
like to be around. One of her many
legacies is a hymn that we sing
from our childhood. We welcome
the spring with 'All things bright
and beautiful' (No. 23 in Complete
Mission Praise).
'All creatures of our God and King'
was written by St Francis of Assisi
and put to music by Henry Draper
(No. 7 in Complete Mission Praise).
The words were written as St
Francis observed a flock of birds
with beautiful plumage and
marvelled that God had provided
for their entire needs.
Then there is Brian Howard’s 'If I
were a butterfly' (No. 825 in
Hymns Old and New) - he wanted
to write catchy songs with actions
that would be remembered.
'Our God is a great big God' by Jo
and Nigel Hammond was written
as they approached Hong Kong
with its overwhelming skyscrapers
and thought how much bigger God
was!
Graham Kendrick is now writing
songs that our children are singing
and playing in their little band and
doing actions that delight us all.
So the hymns and songs keep
coming to console, inspire and
enable us to praise.
Songs that take us right through
the Church’s Year.
Let’s sing praises as Paul and David
remind us!

Hello,
Welcome to the month of May.
Can’t believe how quickly Easter
has come and gone. The lead up
to Easter and beyond has been a
special time at Holy Ascension
with many folks coming to the
different services.
On Easter Day at the 10.45 service
we had over 170 people attend
and all the children decorated
their eggs after the service.
I can’t ever remember Easter Day
being on April 1st, April Fools’ Day.
There is a saying, “There’s no fool
like an old fool.”
We live in a world of distrust. We
don’t take things at face value
anymore. We hear of fake news in
the media.
I am up to scam number 12 on my
phone, so I don’t answer when
they ring me.
But the Bible tells us:
'God is to be trusted, The God
who called you to have fellowship
with his Son Jesus Christ our
Lord.'
(1 Corinthians 1 verse 9).
For the message of Easter is about
Jesus’ life, his death and his
resurrection.
For many it is nonsense - it makes
no sense - but to others it’s God’s
saving power through Jesus Christ
our Lord.
I’ll leave you with a question.
Who do you trust with your life?
Enjoy every day and be a blessing
to those around you.
Every Blessing,
Dave O’Brien (Curate)

On Wednesday 28th March the
Deeside Branch of the Oddfellows
Friendly Society hosted a charity
‘Mad Hatters Tea Party’ for Marie
Curie at the charming Oddfellows
Hotel in Lower Bridge Street. This
was originally the Chester home
of this branch of Oddfellows, and
now has an Alice in Wonderland
theme.
Alice, Mad Hatter, March Hare
and Dormouse greeted visitors
who enjoyed a luxury afternoon
tea or dropped in for tea and
cake. Along with a fabulous raffle,
the event raised an amazing £950
for Marie Curie.
Oddfellows is one of the largest
and oldest friendly societies in the
UK. Through friendship, social
events, care, support and advice,
they help members to get more
out of life in good times and in
times of need.
Based in Saltney and covering the
whole of the Deeside area, the
group hold regular events to help
members have fun, stay active
and make friends.
Denise Turner, Oddfellows Branch
Secretary says: “Everybody
enjoyed this event. We always
guarantee a very warm welcome.

One of Upton’s oldest residents
passed away last October.
Nancy Turton was born into a
Cheshire farming family and lived
all of her life in Upton.
She was Chairman and President
of Upton Flower Club, a member
of the Village Hall Management,
Committee Member of the Parish
Council and on the Board of
Governors for Acresfield School.
Nancy was widely respected for
the work she did for these and
other organisations.
She helped to organise several
flower festivals at Holy Ascension
raising money for local charities.
Her home was Woodville in Flag
Lane and the garden was much
admired by passers-by, from the
early snowdrops and daffodils to
the colourful herbaceous border
in summer and autumn.

Help us spring clean, Lord, As we sort through so much clutter,
Discarding the unwanted, Clearing long-abandoned cobwebs,
Dusting in every corner, Cleaning where it shows and maybe
Even where it doesn't, Finding hidden treasures
That we thought were lost forever In our spiritual as well as daily lives.
Help us spring clean, Lord, Before continuing this year,
refreshed.
John Birch (From faithandworship.com)
A recent survey stated that there are so few believers amongst young
adults. Being Easter it made me think of a passage from Lamentations
Chapter 1 Verse 2: 'Is it nothing to you all, ye that pass by?' that is so
movingly repeated by John Stainer in his beautiful Oratorio The
Crucifixion. I can also imagine Jesus suffering on the cross and feeling
exactly the same way. As our Vicar Paul asked in our joyful Easter
service: ‘Do you really believe Jesus rose from the dead?’ In a more
positive vein, the article called Did Jesus Rise from the dead? (Y-
Jesus.com) may be of interest. A member of HA congregation
Spring Clean at Holy Ascension
Thank you to all who helped at the spring clean on Saturday 17th February.
There are far more veterans with
issues than those presenting
themselves because of Iraq and
Afghanistan (think of WW2 and
onwards).
Problems such as mental health
and associated homelessness are
often felt to be bigger than they
actually are because of the media
spotlight and, as far as we can
tell, the situation is not spiralling
out of control (yet!)
In fact the overall problem is
declining with a decrease in our
wartime elderly generation.
Findings from The Royal British
Legion in 2014, estimate a UK ex-
Service community (veterans and
dependants) of 6.2 million people.
The main issues identified were:
Meeting complex needs of
those aged 85+ will be a
continuing theme
Working-age veterans more
likely to report long term
health problems (24%) than
the general population of the
same age (13%)
Working-age veterans less
likely to be employed (60%)
than the general population
of the same age (73%)
According to a Parliament Post
Note in February 2016, the
prevalence of common mental
health problems in the military is
higher than in the general
population, but remains stable:
While PTSD accounts for a
small number of cases,
combat troops and reservists
present a higher risk of
developing it
Regulars who leave service
early, and reservists, have a
higher risk of developing
mental health problems than
their peers
Helping the Forces Veteran Community when things unravel
Outcomes for early service
leavers are likely to relate to
pre-enlistment risk factors
Drinking at harmful levels is
widespread in the Forces
Veterans are far more likely to be
‘invisible’ in our parishes and
communities, having lost contact
with the military or failing to
engage with the help that is
available for many different,
sometimes complex, reasons.
It is not uncommon to come
across someone who wouldn’t
class themselves as a ‘veteran’
because it is not a word they
associate with their own military
service (they didn’t serve during a
war or they don’t think they
served for long enough because
they didn’t get a pension!)
A declining problem, but one
where those eligible for support
have largely failed to engage
despite all the charities,
Regimental Associations and
statutory organisations that are
there to help.
When we come across someone
from the forces in need, we
immediately think of the Soldiers
Charities and forget our own NHS.
Very often the first port of call
should be through the local GP.

More and more clients are becoming interested in ethical investments and with the TV constantly spitting out dramatic footage of our plastic littered seas, rivers being poisoned or reporting a steady stream of man-made disasters, we believe the demand will only increase for ethical investments in the coming years.
There is even a stock market index these days specifically to measure this type of investment, the “FTSE4Good” which could be selected by an investor as a tracker but generally ethical investments select companies to invest in using either positive or negative selection….
Positive selection is used by the fund manager to INCLUDE a specific share based on something the business actively does. For example, company X is included because they return 50% of their profits to charity every year.
Negative selection is used to EXCLUDE a specific share, for example company Y is an arms dealer and is specifically not included in the portfolio.
Some funds may also have very specific profiles such as concerning itself specifically with green energy generation or re-cycling although this may leave an investor exposed to a single industry with little diversification. Other areas taken into consideration may be to exclude tobacco, arms manufacture or fossil fuel generation for example. Thought could also be given to a firm’s human rights record or the standards in its labour supply chain, however you can already see what a complicated area this can be.
