Mary’s Inn is a maternity home dedicated to the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of single pregnant mothers and their developing babies. It is a safe haven where they can stay while learning the skills they need to make a better life for themselves and their babies.

Therapist, Jessica Hansen, LMHC, presented on postpartum maternal mental health.

Abby Spiegel, from the Iowa State Extension Office, taught a 9 week course, “Buy Eat Live Healthy” for our Life Skills classes on Wednesday evenings. Here she guides Kelsey on making a healthy, delicious, & affordable meal.

Dear Friends,

Growing up, most of us learned life skills from our parents or teachers. As a sophomore at Wahlert in the early ‘80s I took Home Ec where we were taught sewing, nutrition, cooking and other skills that were deemed important for young

women to know. (Unfortunately, those skills didn’t stick with me. Thankfully I married a good cook!) I also took Mr. Varley’s “General Business” class where we learned about insurance, checking accounts, and other basic business topics. Those lessons stuck a bit better. The residents who live at Mary’s Inn receive weekly Life Skills instructions on similar topics and more. In this issue you’ll see some of the Life Skills classes going on. Thank you to all the

local instructors who have donated their time and expertise teaching our residents! We couldn’t do this work without you!

August 14, 1944 – November 27, 2019

Mary’s Inn lost a great supporter at the end of November. Ted’s background in Human Resources (Dubuque Community

School District and Finley Hospital) and his passion for our mis-sion made him a perfect fit for the original Board of Directors. He guided us through our initial hiring of Director and House Staff, and he crafted our hiring forms. He was a great listener and a good judge of people. He is greatly missed.

Our deepest sympathies to his wife Marilyn and his family.

Kelsey celebrated 6 months of being drug-free.

She goes to weekly meetings for accountability and wants to surround herself with good influences.

We are proud of you, Kelsey!

Kelsey is very artistic and creative and chose a unicorn theme for her baby shower.

Kelsey’s shower was held at St. Anthony’s parish hall. Family and friends provided the food. The Gabriel project helped with set up and clean up.

Stewardship: Our Response to God’s Gifts, Mark Lansing, Board of Directors

St. Paul tells us “There are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4). Every one of us has been blessed with unique gifts by our Creator. Mother Theresa, now St. Theresa, of Calcutta once said “Do something beautiful for God.” Each day God invites us to love Him through prayer and service to the people we encounter.

Stewardship is all about how each of us responds to God’s gifts and blessings of the time, the talent, and the treasure we have been given. Prayer is a vital first step of our stewardship. Quiet time listening, thanking God, and asking for our own and others’ needs and guidance is a great way to start each day. Just as Jesus came to serve, so also are we, Jesus’ disciples, called to serve in His name. The following words of the song, “St. Patrick’s Breastplate” are a beautiful stewardship prayer: “What do you want of me, Lord? Where do you want me to serve you? Where can I sing your praises? I am Your song.” Lord hear our prayer.
