Heart to Heart The Illusion of Success vs. God’s Plan

Bill and I have been leading a class for a series of videos at our church for the last year. The end

of the series was titled “Raising Kids for True Greatness” by Dr. Tim Kimmel. He emphasized many

good ideas for parents to think about. I hope every family will read his book.

Here are some excerpts:

“The success illusion many parents buy into goes like this: Our kids have to be the smartest, the fastest,

the prettiest, the best connected, the most popular, the best outfitted, the best rewarded, the most confi-

dent.

However we need to instill the qualities of humility, gratefulness, generosity, and a servant’s attitude in

our children.. If we do this we set them up to live a life that make an eternal difference.”

Here are 7 Ways to Build a Great Attitude in Your Kids’ Hearts toward God.

Dr. Kimmel recommends:

1. Have a joyful faith. Believe big. Trust huge. Let your children see a belief in God that makes you a

much happier and more agreeable person to live with.

2. Be actively involved in a thriving church. Find a church that exudes a mighty joy and an exciting atti-

tude toward God.

3. No matter what church you go to, refuse to criticize the people who serve you. Love your pastor, wor-

ship leader, youth workers, Sunday school workers and volunteers. If you have a legitimate concern, deal

with the person face to face in a spirit of grace, love and kindness.

4. Pull your weight. Volunteer your time, your spiritual gifts, and your sweat to carry the burden of ser-

vice of your church.

5. Set an example for your children by consistently supporting your church financially.

6. Make reading God’s Word a part of your daily routine.

Bring your family to church every Sunday and encourage them during the week. Pray with them and for

them. Minister to your children’s hearts throughout the week so that they can show up for church ready to

love God and love others.

I hope you all have a wonderful summer! Enjoy your family!

Love,

Marilyn

A Word to Fathers ~ By Bill Stephens

Summer Reading List Recommendations

It is that time of year when I give you my recommended reading list. A friend of mine asked me what my favorite

past-time was. I didn’t have to think very long. My favorite past-time is reading.

As a child, I was never a very good reader. In grade school I was always in the slow reading group. In the pivotal

third grade there were four of us in the slow reading group, of course, all boys. I believe the groups were color coded. There

was not the designation of the ”Smart Group” or the “Dumb Group”. I believe we were the “Orange Group”. I spent a lot of

time creating war scenes on blank pieces of paper.—low flying airplanes dropping bombs on the enemy’s ships. Now-a-days I

am sure I would have been sent to the principal’s office for depicting guns and killing but, this was the mid fifties, a mere ten

years after WWII.

Needless to say, I began to enjoy reading. I can remember the first day reading “clicked” for me. My parents, who

were avid readers, would always buy the Sunday Los Angeles Times. Everyone would choose their favorite section and we

would read on Sunday afternoons after church. The section I chose was the Sunday comics. I would look at the pictures try-

ing to figure out the story line. Then one day, it occurred to me—I know what the writing is in the clouds above their heads.

That was when I began reading on my own. Here is my list of books for this summer.

18 Words: The Most Important Words You Will Ever Know. Written by J.I. Packer. I discovered this book

through Alister Begg’s ministry “Truth for Life” KKLA 8:00 A.M. Monday-Friday. “Keys open doors; key-

words open minds.” You will get a deeper understanding of Bible and your Christian faith by reading this book

by one of the greatest theologians of our time.

The Triumph of Christianity. Written by Rodney Stark. I enjoyed this book because it was fairly optimistic. The

Church has always struggled yet always has grown. Compared to the early Christians and what they endured, we

haven’t seen anything yet.

American Crucifixion: The Murder of Joseph Smith and the Fate of the Mormon Church. Written by Alex

Beam. In this book you will get a slice of American history in the 1800’s and a fascinating story of the early days

of Mormonism.

Lion’s Gate: On the Front Lines of the Six Day War. Written by Steven Pressfield. I must admit, I have not

started this book yet but I heard a three hour interview on the radio with Hugh Hewitt. This story covers much of

the history and early days of modern Israel but also the war from the perspective of those soldiers on the battle-

field.

Still the Best Hope: Why the World Needs American Values to Triumph. Written by Dennis Prager. If you want

to know why America is Exceptional here is the book. If you have a son or daughter going off to college this fall,

they should read this book.

Marriage and Civilization: How Monogamy Made us Human. Written by William Tucker. This book makes the

great secular case for marriage between one man and one woman. Once I got through the studies of apes and

chimpanzees the book took off for me. The author’s premise is that polygamist cultures create aggressive males.

Sounds like it might be true.

At Home: A Short History of Private Life. Written by Bill Bryson. This book will give you the history of every-

thing that touches your personal life from the history of personal hygiene, hairdos, and why there really was a

sickness called cabin fever.

I hope you all enjoy your summers.

United States History (Summer class starting June 2 )

In United States History we will not only be studying the historical events from the

pre-colonial era of the United States to modern times. We will also be studying the mean-

ing of our nation’s history. As Christians we believe we are all on a spiritual journey within time. The

Christian historian therefore, has great hope concerning the journey of man, his own journey in history, and the

end of time. As believers in Christ we acknowledge that God is active and at work in the world, and in history. We also be-

lieve it is important for us to examine how and why different events happen, how they are connected to us today, and how they re-

late to our salvation. In order to really understand history and our place in it, we will pay special attention to the philosophy and

theology that go along with that history. In order to explore the root of things that happen, the Christian historian must include phi-

losophy and theology in his study. If he does not, then according to philosopher and historian Josef Pieper, he “is altogether unable

to attain a serious view of the totality of history.”

Time: 9—11 am Fee: $150

Date: June 2 through the month of June; Mon., Weds., Fri. Instructor: Greg Loumagne 909) 379-8457 or [email protected]

DISNEY YOUTH EDUCATION PROGRAM

We are looking into the possibility of setting up a field trip to do a Disney Youth Education Series program at Disneyland.

Because it would be a more expensive field trip and it would require at least 10 participants, we want to see who would be

interested in attending. The programs we are thinking about are called Exploring the Golden State (3rd - 5th grade) and Prop-

erties of Motion Physics Lab (6th - 12th grade). A brief overview of each program: 1) Exploring the Golden State – Stu-

dents in grades 3-5 act as early settlers as they travel through Disney California Adventure Park to explore the four regions of

California; Native Americans, the Gold Rush and California Missions. During this 2.5-hour program students will learn about

the state's rich history including the influential events and people that shaped the Golden State including Chuck Yeager, Ame-

lia Earhart, Howard Hugh, John Muir and Walt Disney. They will also be inspired as they learn of the obstacles early Califor-

nians overcame to fulfill their dreams. 2) Properties of Motion Physics Lab – During this 3-hour interactive learning experi-

ence, students in grades 6-12 will learn the role of mechanical physics at Disney California Adventure Park. Students will

study Newton's Laws of Motion and use the scientific method to explore the practical uses of magnetism, friction, gravity and

different forms of energy. With the Park as their learning lab, students will use hands-on experiments to see and test the rela-

tionship between physics and their favorite Disney attractions. Both programs cost $37.00 for the Disney Youth Education

Series Experience Only Ticket. Each programs needs to have a minimum of 10 kids. For the first 10 kids, two chaperones

(parents) are allowed, and for every 10 kids thereafter, one chaperone is allowed (so if we had 30 kids attend a program, then 3

chaperones could attend that one program). No more than the allowed number of chaperones can attend (so most parents

would not be permitted to attend the program). If we have enough interest, we are thinking of setting this up sometime in Oc-

tober or November.

Please contact Denise at [email protected] by July 16th if you are interested in having your child/children attend

one of these programs. Please include grade level.

Kathy Bartling – Kathy has lived in the area with her husband and 3 children for about 20 years. She has homeschooled her three children for

the past 14 years. Her youngest daughter graduated this past June (2013) from Legacy Christian School where Kathy was principal for the past four

years. She graduated from Mt Sac (2006) with Associates in Science degree in Sign Language Interpreting. She started teaching Sign language 8

years ago through ICAP and continued with Sierra Vista Homeschool Connection, which she founded. Her passion for the language grew and she

had a great desire to give the opportunity for students to learn this

language as an option for High School credits. She has been interpreting now for the past 6 years at Mt Sac college, and also at Chaffey this past

year. Kathy attends The Vine Church in Alta Loma with her family. She loves the Lord and is excited to be teaching Sign Language to students

Intro to Latin

NEW CLASS! Intro to Latin is a one-year high school level class.

Latin was the dominant language of most of Europe (The Roman Empire) for well over 1,000 years and has

greatly influenced the English language (for example, from the Latin “scribere”, we get scripture, prescribe, description,

scribble, inscribe, etc.).

It is the basis for the “Romance” languages of Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Knowing even a bit

of Latin makes learning any of those languages easier. It also greatly increases our English vocabulary!

In this class we will be introduced to the Latin language. As we will only meet twice per week, we will not cover every-

thing typically covered in a year-long Latin I course; hence the class title: “Intro to Latin”. This class will provide a firm

foundation on which to build should you desire to continue your studies in Latin or one of the Latin-based languages

mentioned above.

Instructor: Lori Fischer (B.A. Education, Minor in Spanish) Email: [email protected]

Texts: Henle Latin 1 (ISBN: 13:978-0-8294-1026-6) and Henle Latin Grammar (ISBN:13:978-0-8294-0112-7)

You will also need a pack of lined multi-colored 3x5 index cards.

High School Biology Biology is most exciting (and most truthful) when it is taught and learned in the context of our awe-

some Creator. His creation certainly reflects the majesty, wisdom, and power of God. Unfortunately,

secular science is often taught in such a way as to become a stumbling block to the development of our

faith. Science can instead be a stepping-stone to faith – the evidence for design is everywhere, especially in Biol-

ogy! This course is taught with a Creation perspective. We will use the Apologia book, “Exploring Creation with Biol-

ogy”. Topics include the five kingdoms of life, the chemistry of life, cell structure and function, genetics, ecology, evolu-

tion (as a theory), as well as plant, animal, and human biology. Each week we will have a one-hour lecture/discussion

period (generally using PowerPoint slides), followed by a one-hour lab.

Instructor: Matthew H. Sanders, [email protected] or (626) 244-5462

Matthew has a MS in Biology from the Institute for Creation Research. He is currently an adjunct professor at Azusa

Pacific University. Matthew has taught high school chemistry and physics with the EIE home school program in Mon-

rovia, CA. He has also taught at Christbridge Academy in Azusa, CA; AP Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, US

History, Government, Economics, and Personal Values/Bible classes. Matthew created and taught a science course for

the Upward Bound program at Cal Poly Pomona.

CONSUMER MATH (Grades 11-12)

Text: Consumer Math (2nd edition) BJU Press softback ISBN# 1-57924-892-6

(2005 publish date) teacher's ISBN# 1-57924-893-4

This is a full year, high school level course - a God-centered, Scripturally-based approach to stewardship, and the finan-

cial transactions that are encountered in every-day grown-up real life. Based on the five essential principles for the con-

sumer: 1) plan ahead 2) shop for bargains 3) maintain the value of your belongings 4) know when to borrow, and 5)

keep accurate financial records.

Will cover such things as income and tax deductions, budgeting, personal banking, borrowing money, transportation

costs/investments ( buying and maintaining a car), food costs and budgeting strategies, clothing costs and budgeting

strategies, housing costs and budgeting (including home purchases and maintenance), life and health insurance, income

taxes (including completion of the basic tax forms), and vacation planning. (whew!)

These are BASIC LIFE SKILLS that everyone needs, and few, at this time in their life (or ever) are given adequate in-

struction on! Students will learn concepts in class, then complete daily assignments at home. Unit tests will be sent

home, to be administered by a parent or instructor, and brought back to the next class session. TEACHER’S EDITION

REQUIRED -- Parent(s) welcome and encouraged, but not required, to accompany students to class, in order to support

study during the week (or to learn alongside their student!). Parents or students will correct the daily work.

Math concepts will be basic, but there’s quite a bit of it!! -- at least completion of a Pre-Algebra class would be

wise. Ratios, Percentages, basic equation solving, and measurements (including conversions) will be COVERED, but a

basic knowledge would be good . . . This is a great math option for the student who is NOT strong in math skills, but

needs to get the required classes in for graduation, as WELL as being a terrific life-skills course for ANYONE, includ-

ing the mathematically gifted :-) Recommended for students who are seniors, especially before they “head out into the

world”.

This is a full year, high school level course - STUDENT MUST HAVE COMPLETED AT LEAST ALGEBRA I

PRIOR TO ENROLLMENT - I do recommend, for most, that students take Alg 2 the year immediately following Alg 1,

if they are intending to do BOTH classes - Alg 2 content relies HEAVILY on Alg 1 content!!.

This is a presentation of Algebra as an exercise in stewardship of creation, developing thinking skills and Christ-

likeness . . . wow! Chapter 1 dives right into factoring polynomials, binomials, and trinomials, assuming a pretty strong

mastery. Text moves through linear equations and inequalities, linear relations, quadratic equations and functions,

graphing, linear programming, radicals and exponential functions and equations, imaginary and other complex numbers,

rational expressions and equations, trigonometry, and matrix algebra. Students will learn concepts in class, then com-

plete daily assignments at home. Daily homework assignments will be corrected by student or parent. Unit tests will be

TION REQUIRED -- Parent(s) welcome and encouraged, but not required, to accompany students to class, in order to

TWO (2) days per week, though there may be a FEW Friday classes that we DON’T hold (due to holiday schedules,

etc).

This is a full year course. Will cover skills required to proceed into High School Algebra, and students completing it will be WELL PRE-

PARED for Algebra 1.

**I get asked often, which math should my Jr Higher be doing?” If your student does a decent job (80% average) on basic mathematics,

especially multiplication & division, and maybe ok on fractions, he/she should take Pre-Algebra. The current “fashionable” trend in educa-

tion these days (public and private) is that students should take Algebra I in 8th grade, which would mean Pre-Alg in 7th. This works for

some, and is (in my opinion) a GRAVE mistake for a lot of others! According to Bob Jones, this is an 8th grade curriculum.

This class is available, as well, to High School students who require additional work on the basics!

Call me if you need to talk about any of this!

Starts right out working with equations, covering properties of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Will move into decimals,

integers, multiples, factors, fractions, equations and inequalities, ratio, proportion, percentages, geometry and graphing. Emphasis through

entire text is on equations and solving them, using all the mathematical concepts introduced. These basic skills would be prerequisite for an

Algebra course. Students will learn concepts in class, then complete daily assignments at home. Daily homework to be corrected by parent

and/or student. Tests will be sent home, to be administered by a parent or homeschooling teacher, and brought back to the next class ses-

Modern World History In Modern World History we will not only be studying historical events, we will also be studying the meaning of the world’s

history. As Christians we believe we are all on a journey to the end of time. The Christian historian therefore, has great hope

concerning the journey of man, his own journey in history, and the end of time. As believers in Christ we acknowledge that

God is active and at work in the world and in history. We also believe it is important for us to examine how and why different

events happen, how they are connected to us today, and how they relate to our salvation. In order to really understand history

and our place in it, we will pay special attention to the philosophy and theology that go along with that history. In order to ex-

plore the root of things that happen, the Christian historian must include philosophy and theology in his study. If he does not,

then according to philosopher and historian Josef Pieper, he “is altogether unable to attain a serious view of the totality of his-

tory.”

Intro to Latin-Intro to Latin is a one-year high school level class.

Latin was the dominant language of most of Europe (The Roman Empire) for well over 1,000 years and has greatly

influenced the English language (for example, from the Latin “scribere”, we get scripture, prescribe, description,

scribble, inscribe, etc.).

It is the basis for the “Romance” languages of Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. Knowing even a bit of Latin

makes learning any of those languages easier. It also greatly increases our English vocabulary!

In this class we will be introduced to the Latin language. As we will only meet twice per week, we will not cover everything typi-

cally covered in a year-long Latin I course; hence the class title: “Intro to Latin”. This class will provide a firm foundation on which

to build should you desire to continue your studies in Latin or one of the Latin-based languages mentioned above.

Instructor: Lori Fischer (B.A. Education, Minor in Spanish)

Texts: Henle Latin 1 (ISBN: 13:978-0-8294-1026-6) and Henle Latin Grammar (ISBN:13:978-0-8294-0112-7)

You will also need a pack of lined multi-colored 3x5 index cards.
