What is heart transplant?
A heart transplant surgery is a surgical procedure performed to remove the damaged heart from a patient and replace it with a healthy one from an organ donor.
A heart transplant surgery consists of three operations.• The first operation is harvesting the heart from
the donor. The donor is usually an unfortunate person who has suffered irreversible brain injury, called "brain death".
• The second operation is removing the recipient's damaged heart.
• The third operation is probably the easiest; the implantation of the donor heart.
About the heartThe heart is the hardest working muscle in the human body. Located almost in the center of the chest, the adult human heart is about the size of one fist. The heart is the muscle that pumps blood filled with oxygen and nutrients through the blood vessels to the body tissues.
