Heartbeat of Liberal
On Sunday, November 3rd, First Southern Baptist Church called Mark Cress to be our pastor. Mark accepted the call. The search team says, “Thank You Church!”. We thank you for your prayers, encouragement, and patience over the past approximately twenty months. Although the process lasted longer than we had hoped, we are confident that God has led us to His man for our church. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the LORD.” (Isaiah 55:8 ESV) After working with somewhere around 150 resumes (as a result of job postings at seminaries and on the web) God led us to Mark through a former FSBC attender who taught and coached here in Liberal. Our Heavenly Provider used a “chance” meeting in Virginia to start the process to bring Mark and his family back to Kansas and FSBC Liberal. Thank you God!!! Mark has asked us to pray for the following: * Their house will sell quickly; * His current church, Grace Baptist Church, Woodbridge, VA, as they begin the process of filling the Connections Pastor position Mark will be vacating; and, * They will find a health insurance package that works for their family. The search team is asking you to pray for the logistics of the Cress family’s move from Virginia to Liberal to come together and flow smoothly. The team and Mark are praying and hoping January 5 will be his first Sunday here at FSBC. Merry Christmas, Your Pastor Search Team Cheryl Collins ~ Gary Classen ~ Donovan Batt ~ Dean Alling ~ David Short ~ Rick Keating

Advent—“The arrival of a notable person, thing, or event” During the weeks leading up to Christmas we use an older word that doesn’t come up in our everyday vocabulary, ADVENT. I’ve provided the definition above. When we gather during the weeks of Decem-ber and worship together, light candles at the front of the sanctuary, and speak of the hope, peace, joy, and love that Jesus brought to earth we are practicing advent. We are preparing for “the arrival of a notable person.” We are remembering His first coming and looking forward to His second coming. What are you waiting for? Here at FSBC we are anxiously awaiting Mark Cress and his family being able to join us as our new pastor. We are celebrating now that God has brought a pastor, while at the same time we wait for the day when he arrives and we get to know him more fully. In your own life, there are things that you are waiting. You wait for some things with anxious excitement and you wait for other things with dread. There is a sense of anticipation or dread depending on what you are waiting. My prayer for you this December is that you would take to heart the words of Paul in Philippians 4:6-7. 6 “Don’t worry about anything, but in everything, through prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” In Psalm 46 we are reminded to “be still and know that He is God.” My prayer is that as you focus on celebrating the birth of Jesus and all that means for us as Christians, that you might be able to put aside those worries that can so often cause this season to be stressful. We have purchased an Advent Devotional called “The Cast of Christmas” that is available in the church lobby. I hope that this devotional will help you to focus your hearts on our Lord and Savior this advent season. God Bless, Pastor Jeremy

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here we are, ladies, almost to the end of The One Year Women’s Friendship Devotional! It’s been so fun knowing that we have been reading this devotional together as part of our daily quiet times at home. So many days, the writings and scriptures that Cheri Fuller or Sandra Aldrich gave us spoke to my heart. Often their themes even matched or amplified other Scriptures and guides I was following. Some days, they reminded me of what to pray for that day- for family, friends, and the world. We hope the book has blessed you this year. I notice that Cheri’s theme for the first week of December, as we begin Advent, will be “Christmas Treasures.” Knowing that Christians throughout history have observed Advent “as a time of meditation, prayer, and anticipation of the celebration of Christ’s birth,” and that even in 2019 Christians all around the world are doing the same, thrills my soul. You’ll enjoy the story that Cheri relates on December 4. It’s a story I’ve read many times, and it always finds a place in my heart, maybe because we were teachers in Africa (many years ago!). Cheri concludes her devotion with “…let’s remember that the preparation we make for family, friends, and those we serve is all part of our gift to them.”
“If we think of our heart, rather than our purse, as the reservoir of our giving,
we shall find it full all the time.”--David Dunn
Ladies' Legacy December 2019
Unsung Heroes of FSBC
Our church facility is always sparkling! When we arrive at the front doors for Sunday School, the windows have no finger prints, the carpet in the foyer has no bits of grass and leaves, waste baskets have been emptied, and restrooms are shiny clean. There are no bulletins from last week littering the sanctuary, and Sunday School classrooms are ready to be occupied. Rooms are always at the ready for whatever function might be taking place during the week. Does this happen by accident? No, it is the result of many hours of work by our faithful custodian and her assistant. Linda Potts has been cheerfully serving the Lord for thirty-plus years as our custodian, making it possible for families to enjoy coming to the lovely building that God has given us and that she has taken care of so faithfully all these years. Recently Andrew Neuman has joined Linda as her assistant, and can be found cleaning the sanctuary, among other things. Thank you, Linda and Andrew! We appreciate you!
