The P6 students from the Infocomm Club, trained as Cyber-Wellness Ambassadors, led a recess activity for the upper primary levels. They created their own information boards in a simple campaign to raise awareness about dangers on the Internet and preventive measures one can take to stay safe in cyberspace. With case studies of real-life cybercrimes, students learnt that it is essential to be careful and vigilant when using the Internet.

There were months of intense coaching as our upper primary students prepared for the Wits & Words: Inter-School Debate Championship 2019. The debates saw the team of Hu Yi En (Excellence 1), Alaric Seah Jun Hong (Excellence 5), Popov Daniil (Excellence 5), Ng Jia Qing (Excellence 5) and Lee Zi Hui Dawn (Resilience 4) pitting their wits against 42 other primary school teams in Division 1 and engaging in fi ery war of words on challenging motions. Our students have shown grit, exercised their persuasive and reasoning prowess, and shown strength in withstanding the pressures of the competition. Our lower primary students also took part in the Kids’ Lit Quiz in April, an international literature competition for

students. Held annually, students answered questions on children’s books ranging from

classics to comics.

In Term 1, Pei Tong’s Chinese Orchestra performed at both the school’s Chinese New Year Celebration as well as the 24th Community Lunch. Our CCA students

felt a sense of pride having prepared the Chinese New Year Medley and

an arrangement of Alan Walker’s “Faded” within a month since practice commenced. Through these opportunities, our students’ confi dence was enhanced in the

through their music.

Our Choir members were proud to have presented Chinese New Year classics such as “He Xin Nian” and “Xiao Bai Chuan” to the elderly at the Community Lunch after months of hard work. Encouraged by their successful performance at the start of the year, the Choir continues to persevere in their preparation for their concert at the Esplanade in June 2019.

Programme for Active Learning (PAL) is aligned to the school vision, mission and values. In PAL, P1 and P2 students are exposed to varied and fun learning experiences in four domains: Sports and Games, Outdoor Education, Performing Arts and Visual Arts.

Students acquire socio-emotional competencies such as respecting others and responsible decision-making. Through group activities, PAL nurtures confi dence, curiosity and cooperation skills in students.

The P2 students learnt about how Singapore progressed economically and structurally

through authentic learning experience at Singapore Discovery Centre (SDC). Prior to this trip, the students were introduced to the various national symbols. The trip also

helped students to familiarise themselves with the unique features of their national

P5 CampThe P5 cohort participated in the annual Resilience Camp from 25 to 27 February 2019. This year, the camp was held at Jalan Bahtera Adventure Centre. One of the objectives of the camp was for students to demonstrate values such as resilience and excellence through various activities like abseiling, zipline and rock climbing. Those activities also provided the opportunity for students to build their confi dence and self-esteem. The highlight of the camp was the campfi re, where students showcased their talents

in the group performances.

It is a tradition in Pei Tong Primary School for our staff, students, parents and the School Advisory Committee (SAC) members to host a lunch for senior citizens in the community during the Lunar New Year festive month. Our 24th Annual Community Lunch was held on 16 February 2019 and was graced by Dr. Tan Wu Meng, Advisor to Jurong GRC Grassroots Organisation (Clementi).

Our P6 students took on different roles in this event as part of their “Values In Action – iCare for the Community” project. They packed goodie bags, performed for the seniors, set up the hall for the event and made Chinese New Year cards. Our SAC sponsored the lunch as well as “red packets” for the senior citizens who attended the event while the rest of the school raised funds to purchase goodie bags for the senior citizens.

Earth DayEnvironmental and Science Club members helped to raise environmental awareness through activities such as promoting plastic recycling through a fi shing game, conducting quizzes relating to electricity conservation and reducing food wastage. They also set up message dedication booths to encourage environmental conservation. The members showcased their upcycled production such as the solar cooker and recycled paper. Students in the school enjoyed the activities as they understood the message of energy conservation and climate change.

International Friendship Day

During the Chinese New Year celebration, teachers and students were treated to a fantastic array of programmes. Besides enjoying the lion dance, wushu and music performances, the students

had fun learning about idioms and guessing Chinese riddles! Prior to the festive celebration, students also learnt

Chinese New Year greetings in Mandarin and tried the distinctive Chinese handicraft, paper-cutting, during Active Recess. This year, students from our MOE Kindergarten

joined in our celebration.

“Together We Keep Singapore Strong” was the theme for Total Defence Day 2019. At Pei Tong Primary, we focused on how Civil Defence, one of the fi ve Pillars of Total Defence, is critical to Singapore. As part of the commemoration, students wrote pledges to do their part to keep Singapore safe and interacted with the neighbourhood police volunteers who shared their experiences and knowledge with them during Active Recess. Our students even had the opportunity to get behind the wheels of a real police car.

The theme for this year’s International Friendship Day is “Connected Communities”.

An entertaining skit was presented during assembly to teach students about the importance of staying united as a community.

During the Active Recess, students coloured the countries’ flags, matched the landmarks and wrote friendship cards to one another. Parent Volunteers also set up two display booths to showcase the cultures of

Indonesia and Vietnam. The students had fun learning about ASEAN countries.

As part of Malay enrichment programme, our students from P3, 4 and 5 took part in the Ops Baca 2019 jointly organised by Greenridge Primary School and Zhenghua Community Club on 16 March 2019. The students were excited about taking part in this competition and were very enthusiastic during rehearsals. The P3 students took part in the Book Promotion category where they acted out a scene from a book they were selling. The P4 students participated in the ‘Lain Pula!’ category where they added a modern twist to a favourite classic story. The P5 students had to address the moral dilemma of the skit they presented. For a fi rst-time effort, the students did well, coming in third in two categories and placing fourth overall. Well done!

On 13 March 2019, our school held the annual Prefect Investiture. The student leaders celebrated the commencement of duty for our new Prefect Executive Committee (EXCO) in Primary 5. Our newly appointed Head Prefect, Neo Wei Lun, Dexter (Resilience 3), delivered a rousing message to our student leaders. In his message, he encouraged all student leaders to always be exemplary in behaviour and serve the school with pride. In the second segment of the ceremony, P6 student leaders who served as CCE Ambassadors, Active Recess Representatives, CCA leaders and Cyber-Wellness Ambassadors were recognised for the service they had rendered to the school. Congratulations to all the student leaders.

The Sports Carnival was held on 18 April 2019. The

carnival commenced after student representatives from each class took the Athlete’s Pledge. The P3 students gathered at the

newly constructed outdoor basketball

court for their Captain’s Ball matches. The P4 students were

extremely excited to use the new fi eld for their soccer matches. The P5 students had their floorball matches in the Indoor Sports Hall (ISH) while the P6 students played their hearts out against their opponents in the Multi-Purpose Hall (MPH) for their volleyball matches!

The highlights for the event were the Student-Teacher Games and the Station Games as the Pei Tong family had fun and celebrated sportsmanship!

In a bid to expose our P4 students to challenging situations in which they could learn to apply creative thinking, critical analysis, communication and collaboration skills, they participated in Destination Imagination (DI) Tournament on 6 April 2019. This international competition comprised various challenges that foster creativity, courage and curiosity through the fi elds of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). We are proud of the valiant collaboration efforts of this pioneering team of students.
